A word about
authoring
a novel-length sex story for the internet…
I’ve heard back from a few fans here and there about the story. Almost all have been appreciative and supportive, and for that I’m thankful. Several have urged me to write professionally, where I might be rewarded for my work and therefore be spurred on to write MORE of it. I’d like to, and maybe I will. But that’s not why I got started with it.
When I wrote the story, I set about to write the kind of story that I would love to read. I did it mostly because I looked… and looked. I did a lot of looking on quiet Wednesday nights. I’ll bet you know what I’m talking about. I found a few gems (and thank you for those, RenPet!). But overall, I failed to find that perfect something that I, personally, craved.
It’s hard to find a complex story in this genre because… basically… nobody is allowed to write about such taboo topics!
That’s unfair to say… that people can’t write stories like this. I mean, obviously, people can write just about anything as long as it doesn’t threaten the life of a president. No… the problem is this; that while we may be allowed to write it, almost no-one will allow it to exist and be shared. Not even if you give it away, and most CERTAINLY not if you want to sell it. You can forget that. Amazon will burn your book (digitally) and/or close your account. This, from a retailer who resells a book (several in fact) about fantasy pterodactyl sex. I’m not kidding!

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with dinosaur erotica. I defend your right to enjoy a randy cold-blooded interlude with an extinct creature. All I’m saying is, if she can gainfully publish hers, let me publish mine. PayPal has similarly used its market power in the past to coerce Smashwords to come to heal over content that they, a corporation, find objectionable. It’s comforting to know that we have such responsible corporations out there working hard to ensure purity of thought, yours and mine. Apparently, freedom of speech is not so free.
Morality is fashion. It changes and morphs in space and time. It is not absolute. What was immoral 60 years ago, like divorce, is accepted now. What is immoral now, like slavery, was accepted practice 200 years ago. 1000 years ago, you might fear death or banishment from your home if you had a child out of wedlock. Or is that today in some places where men walk about with religious texts in one hand and AK-47’s in the other, where women are a modern subclass of domestic slave?
Back to the original point: I wrote the story because I wanted to read it. Because of the kind of story that it is, it rubs the fur of the world the wrong way. There’s just not that much of it out there. Authors are discouraged from writing such a story. But I believe it has value. At its heart, it’s a dented, burned, chained down love story.
Is my story immoral? I don’t know... probably. I guess it depends on who you ask. It’s complex. I defend my right to write it, and your right to read it. Right here at ASSTR, is practically the only place I can publish it. Thank you ASSTR. As for you, dear reader, your thanks is the only reward that I can hope for. On those days where I had doubts about what I was doing, I was glad for them.
Sincerely,
S. Smith
