Chapter 33

Traveling the next day was both relaxing and fun.  Sango spent the morning teaching those that hadn’t traveled with Inuyasha to play some of the game they had while they had moved.  Because they were fairly simple they were easy to learn and catch on to.  Once everyone understood them they had a riot playing.  But part of the fun was observing and listening to Kagome and Sesshomaru.

As usual, Kagome was traveling in the middle of the pack on Ah-Un so she would be flanked on all sides and better protected.  Usually the demon lord was on point, walking in front of the pack, as befitting his role of leader.  But today he stuck by the little miko and walked by the dragon with one hand on the small of her back, talking to her.  No, no one could hear what they were saying to each other but she seemed to be giggling the whole time, enjoying herself.  Ever so often he would lean over and whisper something in her ear that would make her laugh.  Though the taiyoukai had his usual placid, emotionless mask in place, his eyes told a whole other story.  They were dancing a bit and seemed to show some kind of mirthful mischievousness in them.  Yes, it most certainly was odd to see him out of character and in a bit of a playful mood but it sure as hell was fun to watch for the rest of the pack.

From Kagome and Sesshomaru’s end, they were having fun as well although theirs was a bit more of the personal, private kind only those who had a very personal relationship could have.  Teasing and joking with each other made Kagome giggle almost non-stop.  Then he would lean in close and growl in her ear in such a way that would tickle or give a playful bark kind of thing, both would make her laugh, she couldn’t help herself.  But both of them were having fun with it.

It was fairly obvious that the whole pack was relaxed and in a good humor.  Part of it was they all had gotten used to each other and their individual quirks.  Another part was though they were on the hunt for Naraku there had been no sign of the malevolent spider nor any clue as to what he was up to. They were headed the direction they had gotten some very vague clues about but that was several days away so they had plenty of time to relax before they really had to be on high alert.  Aside from that there were a couple minor errands to attend to:  Sesshomaru needed to stop at his great uncles fortress and Kouga at this tribes den.  Neither errand was Naraku-related and personal in nature so there was no real stress involved in with either things.  Beyond that, the deepening relationship between the taiyoukai and the priestess and the ‘good vibes’ it put off seemed to affect everyone in the pack in a positive manner and relaxed them.  It was obvious to all that both had fallen in love and it was something that all seemed to like to watch.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Once they found a suitable place to camp they all fell into their normal routine for setting things up for the night.  First thing Miroku did was methodically start posting sutras around the campsite, being careful and taking his time to ensure hat they were done correctly.  Grabbing the containers they used for water, Sango and Kagura headed to the nearby river to fill them.  Ah-Un and the wolves headed off to hunt for their dinner and patrol around a bit. Kouga sent Ginta and Hakkaku off to collect firewood while he went to hunt for their supper.  Daoe was flying around everywhere checking things out and seeing everything that was new.  As usual, Kagome sat and unloaded her pack of the things they were going to need.  After an approving nod that everything was going smoothly as normal, Sesshomaru stepped a bit away to answer the call of nature.

As Kagome pulled things out of her pack, she hummed softly, a smile on her face. Of course, as was normal anymore, her thoughts were dominated by a certain demon lord and just how she felt about him. Yes, they also turned to the night before and what they had done, making her fight off the urge to grin like an idiot and blush.

Suddenly, an arm wrapped around her, pinning her arms to her sides and a hand clamped over her mouth.  Squeaking in fear, she started to struggle, trying to pull away.  Giving a yell muffled by the hand, she tried attracting attention of someone, anyone.

Then she felt a brush of air by her ear and a soft voice whispering to her.  “Stay quiet!  I just want to talk to you.”  Immediately, she knew who it was: Inuyasha.  Now she was so terrified that she thought she would lose control and wet herself.  Then she felt herself being lifted up and carried away.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Moving as fast as he could, Inuyasha carried her as far away from the camp as he could, hoping to get a good distance away before anyone knew she was gone.  Heart hammering in his chest, he tried to figure out the best way to go about this.  Already she was scared, he could tell that and feel her shake in her arms.  He didn’t want to make it any worse than it already was.  If she was too frightened he wouldn’t be able to get anywhere with her at all.

Finally, he found a small clearing far enough away from their camp that he felt they would be safe.  Putting her down he just looked at her, quiet, for a minute or so then said, “Kagome…” quietly.

Eyes wide, more scared than she could ever remember being, she licked her lips nervously and backed away from him on legs shaking so badly she could barely stand.  “Please don’t do this Inuyasha!  Let me go!”  She whispered.

“I just want to talk to you Kagome.  That’s all.”  He told her in what he hoped was a calming voice, slowly stepping towards her.

Eyes growing wider, her heart hammering so hard she was sure it would explode soon, the little priestess kept backing away until she couldn’t go any further, backed into the trunk of a very large tree.  Putting her hands out in front of her, she stared at the still advancing hanyou.  “Please let me go Inuyasha.  Don’t do this!”  She stammered out in a quivering, high pitched, squeaky voice.  At this point she was sure that she was dead.  He had taken her far enough away from camp that she was certain no one would get to her in time.  Best things she felt she could do was to delay him as much as she could.  Buying time, she felt, was probably the only real hope she had.  It would at least give everyone a fighting chance to find her, hopefully in time.

Stepping in front of her, the hanyou looked down at the woman he loved so much.  Now was probably the only chance he would ever have to get her to come back to him so he knew he had to make it good.  He was also fairly certain that he wouldn’t have much time.

Leaning down, he kissed her tenderly, slipping one arm around her waist and pulling her flush to his body.  It felt so good to have her pressed to him once more.  Being this close to her he could pick up part of her scent, just a small bit of it, but he wanted to once more have his nose filled with the wonderful scent that was uniquely his miko.  So, while his lips were locked with hers, he reached up and broke the beads that were around her neck.  Once they were off her smell once more swirling around him and filled his nose the way it used to.  That, as it always had, relaxed him a bit.  Breaking the kiss off, he looked down at her, eyes soft.  “I love you Kagome.”  He told her quietly.  Then he took another deep breath.

Yes, this time her smell once more filled his nose but along with it came another one, that of his bastard half-brother.  Unable to top it, visions of the two naked and entwined the night before filled his head.  Helpless to stop it, his temper began to spike and a very familiar feeling began to overtake him.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Sesshomaru was just finishing up when it seemed as though he were under attack by Daoe.  The bird circled around him madly screeching and squawking in a frenzy the likes of which he had never seen before.  He then beat him about the head with his wings to make sure he had his attention before grabbing a chunk of his hair and tugging him a direction that led away from camp, still trying to squawk.

Immediately, the taiyoukai knew something was seriously wrong.  “Show me what it is Daoe!”  He told the bird, tucking things back into his hakama.

Instantly, the bird was off the direction he had been trying to tug him, chirping and squawking madly.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Leaning down until he was nose to nose with the wench, Inuyasha growled in her face.  Breathing heavily, eyes flashing dangerously, fists clenched, he said, “You STUPID bitch!   Just what in the hell do you think you’re playing at?!?  You think you’re his now?  That because the two of you have deluded yourselves into thinking that you’re in love that you think you’re now his?  Wrong!”  He shouted, face in hers, eyes on fire with just a hint of red in them.

Cringing in fear, she cowered away a bit.  She had seen something like this from him before, though never as intense.  It had preceded the worst beating he had ever given her.  She had learned her lesson that time and kept her mouth shut now.  All trying to talk him down was going to manage to do was make him even angrier, not something she wanted.  Shaking so badly she could barely stand, she silently begged for Sesshomaru, or anyone, to come help her before things got any worse because she was sure that the odds were fairly high that she might not survive this encounter.

Grabbing her by the jaw, claws digging in enough that they drew blood, he glared down at her, fangs bared.  Yes, he could smell and sense her fear and part of him hurt because of that.  He knew he should quit and back away but that other side of him was in control and he just couldn’t rein it in.  Snarling once more, he bit out, “I don’t know or care what shit that fuckhead brother of mine filled that empty head of yours with but the facts are this: you are MINEMY bitch!  And will be until the day you die!  You will never be free from me no matter what he says or what happens!  Remember that you stupid cow!”

Lowering his voice to a deadly hiss, he told her, “And I’m warning you now that if you keep up your stupid shit you’re going to push me over the edge and I’ll end up doing something you’re going to regret!”  Digging his claws in a bit more to ensure he had her full attention, he asked, “Do you understand me wench?”

The only thing that came from the terrified priestess’s mouth was a hitched sob.  Even if she could have spoken she wouldn’t have, knowing no matter what she said it wouldn’t be right and would just set him off.

“Answer me!”  He roared then let go of her and backhanded her a good one to loosen her tongue.  “Any other time that damn mouth of yours works too well so you just make it work now!”  He snarled.

When the blow struck her, Kagome’s head rocked back and struck the tree a fairly good blow, making her see stars.  With that she felt and heard a cracking in her cheek.  Plus two of her teeth came loose and one fell out.  Unable to help it, she had swallowed it.  Also, the vision in her one eye had immediately dimmed a bit and went blurry.  Already the whole side of her face was throbbing madly.  Despite trying to hold it in, she burst into tears and began to sob hysterically.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Following Daoe, Sesshomaru was close enough to where the two were to hear the crack of flesh on flesh then Kagome’s loud sobs.  When he began to sense and hear her almost overwhelming terror and pain he let out a loud snarl of pure rage.  Since the bird had gotten his attention, he had been almost sure what the problem had been, now it was confirmed:  Inuyasha had her.  That thought pushed him into a rage.

With the last bit of his quickly fading self control he told the bird, “Go back to camp and get the others.”

With a determined squawk, Daoe turned around and headed back as fast as he could fly.

Desperately, the taiyoukai tried to hang onto what self control he had left and maintain control over his beast but it was tenuous at best and quickly slipping away the more he let and heard from his Kagome.

When he stepped into the clearing the two were in and saw what was happening, it was gone and his beast took over.

…ks…ks…ks…ks….

The second after the blow landed Inuyasha was pulled out of his haze of rage and regretted what he had done.  “Oh Kami Kagome!  I’m sorry!”  He almost sobbed, reaching out to take her in his arms, flinching and tears filling his eyes when she began to sob loudly and cringe away from him.

“I’m sorry Kagome!  Please forgive me!”  He whispered.  Just as he was reaching out to take her in his arms and try to sooth her a deep growling snarl from behind him stopped him in his tracks.  Spinning around to attack whatever was there, the hanyou stopped cold, eyes widening so much they were almost falling out of his head.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Seeing the state their chosen one was in and the close proximity to her the being that had done it was, Sesshomaru’s beast let out an angry roar and closed the distance between him and the hanyou in under a second. Grabbing the whelp by the wrist, it yanked him away and threw him into a nearby tree with ease.  Hearing the satisfying sounds of breaking bones and the pained cries from the boy it growled in contentment.  Then it focused on their wounded intended.  As gently as it could it enfolded her in its arms and nuzzled the side of her head that wasn’t hurt, whimpering.  “Ours,” it growled out softly, trying not to frighten the tiny onna more than she already was.  In a gesture to try to calm her down, it nuzzled her again then began to lick her wounds, trying to heal them.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Though she knew from the red eyes, elongated fangs and jagged stripes on his cheeks that Sesshomaru’s beast was in charge, she sobbed in relief and clung to him when she was enfolded in his arms.  Yes, his beast was frightening because of what she had seen of it in the past but she knew it wouldn’t hurt her and would protect her.  Burying her face in his chest, real tears of both relief and pain came and she sobbed loudly.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Feeling all the emotions from the little one that clung to it, once more the beast let out a soft whine.  Part of it came because of what it felt from her.  It tried to sooth her by growling softly and continuing to lick her wounds as well as running its claws through her hair.  It wanted her to know she was safe with him and that he would protect her.

But part of it also came from confusion.  It was the taiyoukai’s instinctual, bestial side, not the one that did complex reasoning and thinking.  It was now in a position that it needed both and couldn’t do it.  It wanted to protect and comfort their chosen but it also wanted to attack the boy for causing her pain.  It didn’t know what to do!

After another whine of confusion and pain it decided it had to let its other half share control, at least until a decision was made.

After a soft growl and nuzzling the tiny woman once more to let her know she was safe and it would protect her it receded slightly and let its other half share in control.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

For Sesshomaru the decision of what to do was an easy one: Kagome came first.  After a glance over his shoulder to assure himself that the boy was going nowhere any time soon he focused his attention on the little priestess.

Picking her up, he wrapped the thick fluff of his mokomoko around her and held her to his chest.  Nuzzling her head, he began to thrum that rumble in his chest that he knew soothed and comforted her.  “I’m here Kagome.  I won’t let him do any more to you.”  He told her softly though his voice was a bit thicker and deeper than it usually was.

Feeling her nod and cling tighter to him, he began to rub her back a bit while he nuzzled her.  Turning around so he could keep an eye on the boy, he tried to decide what his next move should be.

Of course, his beast was lobbying for the whelps death in the most painful manner that wither of them could come up with.  Though he really wanted that he pushed it back.  He had made a promise and he planned to keep it.  Yes, he was of the opinion that death was justified in this case but he was fairly certain that his uncle wouldn’t see it that way.  Then there was the fact that he was sure that if he were to engage the whelp that, at this point, he wouldn’t survive the encounter.  He was so irate that he was bound to lose control if they tangled.

But, a minute or so later, a better plan for the boy presented its self.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Moving as fast as his jewel shard enhanced legs could carry him, Kouga kept on Daoe’s tail.  He had been off hunting when the bird had found him and all but attacked him.  Sensing something was up he had torn back off to camp.  When he got there everyone but the demon lord and miko had gathered, babbling excitedly.  It turned out the bird had gotten a hold of them.  As they were trying to figure out what was going on the bird had continued to rocket around the camp, making all kinds of noises, trying to get their attention.  Quickly, they realized the creature wanted them to follow him.  Immediately they began to tail the avian youkai.  Kouga was on foot, Kagura on her feather, the monk and slayer on the flying neko youkai.  Bringing up the rear were the wolves and Ginta and Hakkaku on the two-headed dragon demon.

After bursting through the trees to the clearing, Kouga stopped to survey the scene.  The first thing he noticed was a barely conscious Inuyasha struggling groggily to sit up, clutching his limp right arm.  Next thing he noticed was Sesshomaru holding Kagome.  Seeing that the normally in control taiyoukai was sharing his control with his other half told Kouga that something big had happened.  Probably something to Kagome.

Immediately, Daoe swooped over and landed on the demon lord’s shoulder.  Looking down at Kagome it gave a mournful chirp.

The second their feet hit terra firma both Sango and Kagura hurried over to the demon lord.  Trying to get a look at her friends who’s face was buried in the fluff of his mokomoko, Sango put a hand on the miko’s back.  “Are you OK Kagome?”  She asked quietly.

“What happened?”  Kagura asked, looking from the little priestess to the hanyou.  Yes, she was fairly certain she had a general idea of what went on but she wanted confirmation before she whipped out her fan and unleashed some serious vengeance on a certain hanyou.

With a growl in his voice and eyes blazing, Sesshomaru said, in short, clipped tones, “The half-breed grabbed her and once more decided to use her for his own personal punching bag.”

Almost immediately all eyes swiveled to the half-breed and various angry noises from everyone assembled were heard.  Even Daoe hissed angrily at the boy.

Making what had to be among the hardest decisions of his long life, Sesshomaru said, “I’ll leave the retribution up to all of you.  Kagome, and seeing to her, is my priority.  All I ask is you leave him alive though I don’t care how long it takes him to heal.

“I’ll be taking Ah-Un and meet you back at camp.”  He told them after shooting the hanyou a gaze that held such malevolence it should have melted him on the spot.  Walking over to the dragon demon, he held her closely then mounted him.  One the creature was in the air they headed back to the campsite.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

The whole ride back to camp the taiyoukai had to listen to a tantrum from his beast.  Yes, it understood why he had made the decision he had but that didn’t mean it had to be happy about it.  Because, quite frankly, it wasn’t.  It had wanted to at least get in a few shots to let the boy know not to lay his filthy paw on what was theirs.

Honestly, Sesshomaru felt the same way.  He most certainly wanted to personally make sure the boy paid dearly for what he had done but he was astute enough to know he wouldn’t have survived the encounter.  So he did his best to sooth his enraged beast with the knowledge that it would get its retribution, just not now or in the way it expected.  He also reminded it that the onna they held in their arms came before anything else.  She needed them a whole lot more than they needed revenge.

That tactic worked and seemed to pacify his enraged other half.  Rather than retreat and once more relinquish full control back to Sesshomaru, his beast stayed to help the taiyoukai comfort and protect her.

…ks…ks…ks…ks…

Having heard what Sesshomaru said, Inuyasha knew he was in serious trouble.  Willing his battered and hurting body to move, he managed to struggle to his feet and face those who were there.  If they thought that he wasn’t going to put up one helluva fight then they were sadly mistaken!

Cracking the knuckles on the hand that he could still move, he growled out, “Bring it on fuckers!”  Then launched himself at Kouga.
