My dad was an A-4 pilot and his brother flew helicopters (no idea what type, though) in Vietnam. Both were Marines. I don't believe either of them had to go through situations too terribly similar to the things in your story, though I know my dad had his plane shot out from under him once, and my uncle's helicopter crashed due to mechanical failure, killing everyone on board except for him and one other (he was paralyzed as a result).
