The condemned in this case was a young woman [19 yrs old] found guilty of poisoning for money. The sentence was death by fireworm injection. As this is one of the first uses of fireworms it might be worth a short review. \par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 Fireworms are a bioengineering product. A microscopic worm that feeds on flesh. As it feeds it secretes two toxins. The first is systemic in effect and functions as a stimulant , it will prevent shock and or loss of consciousness as well as increase the sensitivity of the nervous system. The second acts locally and produces a very intense pain , volunteers exposed to small amounts report a very intense burning pain that most describe as agony. The total effect is beyond any attempt to describe. As it is a new method and not yet widely used there is still some unanswered questions pertaining to the proper dosage and placement. What is apparent is that there is a direct relationship between dosage and survival times. Placement has a similar relationship . This execution employed a one hundred cc dose injected into the abdominal cavity .\par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 The condemned was lead in and stripped naked. The usual sealing of the anus and the urethra was performed using a fast setting foam. She was then strapped to the table and a large bore [ 8 gauge] needle was inserted just below the navel. A small amount of air was passed through the needle to clear it and to insure it was in the open space in the cavity. The subject showed signs of stomach cramps. Within minutes it was clear that she was in severe pain. I have never witnessed so much damage self inflected with the bare hands. The skin and muscles were ripped and torn to almost expose the internal organs. I believe only the death of the subject prevented her complete disemboweling.\par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 4- remote monitoring of brain activity showed extreme spikes of short duration repeated at very short intervals. The traces so covered the screen that they appeared solid . I was told that they represented a heretofore unseen level of pain response. \par } \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 5- a noticeable weigh loss from supporting the level of activity generated by the body\u8217\'92 s response to the pain.\par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 6- sweating at such a level that it was judged to be the final cause of death through dehydration .\par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 7- a complete destruction of her lips and cheeks due to biting with several broken teeth.\par } \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 8- finally there were fractures of the bones in the legs from the muscle activity\par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 By the seven hour mark the gross activity had ceased for the most part with death following within thirty minutes or so. The body was recovered by a team using high level biohazard equipment and was destroyed by high temperature incineration.\par} \pard\nowidctlpar\nooverflow\sl240\slmult1{\f0\lang1033\fs22\kerning28 This execution clearly demonstrated a new level of punishment. One so far beyond whatever else has been used that I feel quite strongly that it be reserved for only the worse cases. Only a truly evil monster is deserving of such a death. This is not to mention the effect it has on the personal well being of those involved with inflecting it on another human being. Personally I find myself hoping I never have to witness such a death ever again. Perhaps the answer is to discontinue the practice of observing the execution. }}
