The reason for their unity was the Islamic purdah system, which fostered sisterly feelings between members of the same zenana. They never kept anything hidden from each other. Lubna was the older and more adventurous of the two sisters. Yet, it was the marriage of the youngest sister which was fixed first. Zoya was married to Tariq, a wealthy Muslim businessman. The Muslims tried to erect a simplified caste system to keep themselves aloof from the Nau-Muslim Shudras. However, there was a far more important reason other than theology for the Muslim men to attempt to enforce a Brahmin-style caste system. This reason was that the Muslim women seemed strongly attracted to the Nau-Muslim, and even unconverted Shudra, males. Nevertheless, this could not prevent what was permitted by theology.
