He Was Beautiful - Chapter 1

He was beautiful, in the way only young teen boys can be. He took my breath
away.

Not old enough to take on the hardened masculine features that would come
soon enough, and there was no facial hair started. His skin was pale white,
with straight jet-black hair that shone in the light; a little bit always
cascading off his forehead, creating a coy look. As young boys sometimes
do, he was constantly flipping his head around to put that front lock of
hair back in place; exposing a trim, smooth neck. You get the visual.

I'm a career firefighter/paramedic. When I saw him the first time, I was
sporting a leg in a cast from an on-the-job injury and assigned to the
dispatch desk while I recovered. (City government can't have someone
lounging around the house, can they?) Anyway, the city had a program where
teens could learn about different jobs as they planned for a career, and
Jon had just been accepted into the program. That day, he was at the
station for a tour of the dispatch center as my luck would have it.

There were always one or more kids from the program hanging around the
station, and as I settled into work that day, he was getting a tour of the
station from a lieutenant who couldn't be less interested in the program or
the young people in it. It always grated on me, because he was on the edge
of rude to the kids and he acted like it was an imposition to take a break
from the weight room to give a tour or whatever.

Jon's tour had come to an end and the lieutenant wandered off. I noticed
that he was hanging out on a nearby wall, trying hard to be invisible, but
soaking up everything that was going on. It was a busy day, and while I
hated not being out on a unit, a busy day at the desk was better than
nothing at all going on. A few minutes later, the lieutenant came back in
and started to shoo Jon away, implying that he had no business near the
console. I got into the middle of it and told the kid to get a chair and
come sit next to me so he could watch closely. For a minute, the lieutenant
looked like he was going to blow up, but apparently decided it wouldn't be
a good idea in front of all of the staff on a busy day, and he stormed off.

Things eventually quieted down and after I asked, he admitted that he had
homework due the next day. I told him we couldn't tolerate uneducated
firefighters - look at the lieutenant after all - we both laughed. So, I
cleared off a corner of the console for him, and he dug into the books. As
for me, I couldn't keep my eyes off him. Beautiful face, slim small body,
long graceful fingers... I was falling in love right there, crutches cast
and all.

As I was turning the duty log over to my replacement, he told me that he
didn't have any place else to go and that his mom wouldn't be able to pick
him up until late. Right at that moment, my wife arrived to take me home,
and we offered him a ride.

It was the first of many...
