BSB on Vacation 3-4

"Why do you think they ran off?" Brian asked Nick as they drove back to the
hotel.

When the guys came out of the restaurant they saw Alyx and Katy speeding
off in the black Cougar they affectionately called Monty, neither one of
them looking back at the distraught faces of those left behind.

"Why do you think Brian, we lied to them. We deliberately hid who we were
to the first down to earth people we've met since our first tour!" Nick
snapped in reply. He rolled his eyes and returned to staring out the
window. All he could think about was the way Alyx smiled when he brought up
Brian and Katy; he was already missing this smile. The way you could
practically see the proverbial twinkle in his eyes that is always used as a
cliche in situations like this. How was he going to make up for this
mistake? How could he apologize to Alyx for lying to him? And how was he
going to explain to him the deep rooted feelings he was already having for
him.

Nick didn't know it but the same time similar thoughts were streaming
through Brian's head, but about Katy of course. He couldn't wait until he
saw her the next day at the front desk. He needed to make this right. He
had never needed anything so bad in his life. He had never been known to
have an addictive personality, but it was apparent he was already addicted
to Katy, and he knew Nick felt the same for Alyx.

"We gotta get em back bro," Brian stated, pointing out what was obviously
on both of their minds.

"Yeah, I know," Nick conceded. "The question though is, how?"

"I don't know, but I'm not going back until we do, she's that important to
me and I know Alyx is to you too."

On the car ride home all that Alyx and Katy could think of was the veil of
deception that was pulled over them and then suddenly removed.

"Why the FUCK did he have to be so damn charming?" Katy yelled to no one in
particular.

Alyx was a little unsettled by this sign of frustration, but fully
understood where it was coming from. When it came to matters of the heart,
Katy was as cynical as they came, one of her traits that Alyx liked the
least. Oddly enough though, as he watched her with Brian he noticed those
shrouds of cynicism slowly falling away, and now with his own sudden
onslaught of heartbreak he understood why she buried herself in those
shrouds, without them you are naked. Exposed to the harsh elements of life,
allowing yourself to be weathered by the storms that ensue. Alyx had been
tossed around by the gales of romance and heartbreak before, but he
understood one thing that Katy refused to incorporate in her little
philosophy of life; yeah heart break was painful, but the happiness of love
is always well worth it.

Now Alyx was no where near as cynical as Katy, but he had never believed in
the possibility of love at first sight, so why did he feel this way for
Nick? He tried to reason with himself. 'Its just because he's the one
celebrity I've always fantasized about, and now I've met him and gotten to
know him. Since it is him though, I can get over this because he can't be
gay, I'd just be wasting my time pining over him.' Alyx realized that the
logic he was using on himself was similar to the logic Katy always used on
herself, he couldn't have that. There was no way he would let himself
become as callused as her.

"What are we gonna do Katydid?" he asked in a quiet voice, hoping she
didn't hear the pain that he knew was obvious.

"You don't have to do anything, honey," she replied. "You can go on with
your life pretending none of this ever happened, I on the other hand, can't
just not go to work until they're gone. I can't afford not to go to work,
but I also can't stand to ever look at them again."

"Well honey, they probably didn't want to say anything to anyone about who
they were in an attempt to avoid the droves of teeny boppers that would
surround the hotel and make your job absolutely miserable. See, they were
trying to help," Alyx said in an attempt to lighten the mood in the car.

Katy just glared at him. The kind of glare he hated, when she was in a mood
like this, one look from her could stop lava dead in its tracks. "And how
do you figure they were trying to help me in particular? They didn't know
who I was when they made the reservations, and I understand them not
broadcasting who they were to the entire city. But we confided things in
them, YOU FUCKING CAME OUT TO THEM!" Katy's Irish temper was flaring now,
she realized she was raising her voice to an innocent party, and calmed
down a little. Once she regrouped she continued with her thought.

"The reason I find this so unforgivable is because you confided the most
dangerous skeleton in your closet, and they just played it off as if it
meant nothing to them. You even opened that conversation with your need to
be honest, and that was a hint that you needed honesty in return. Can you
believe that Brian, when we were outside, even went so far as to say that
he thought Nick was interested in you, and that he and I should get you two
together? He has got some nerve, let me tell you."

All Alyx could think of to reply to that was, "He thought Nick was
interested in me?"

Katy couldn't help but chuckle as they pulled up to her apartment. "Wanna
spend the night tonight, Hon? We could just sit up all night and have a
"We-hate-men-fest" like we have so many times before? With ice cream and
stupid movies?"

"Sounds good. Is my extra stuff still here? More importantly...is it
clean?"

"Yes, you know that." Katy and Alyx each had a spare toothbrush, pajamas
and a change of clothes at each other's apartments for occasions such as
this.

The next morning Brian and Nick were in the lobby as Katy came in to work.
"Where's Alyx?" Nick said, practically jumping over some poor elderly woman
waiting for her husband to finish checking them in.

"Mr. Carter, Mr. Littrell, good morning to you both. I hope you have a
pleasant day," she said with forced civility. And walked behind the
counter to begin work, hoping they would go away.

"I need to talk to Alyx, Katy. Please, tell me how to get hold of him." The
desperation in Nick's voice was obvious, and it showed there must be
something there, but Katy was very protective when it came to her friends,
especially Alyx, so she wasn't planning on making this easy for him.

"Now why would you want to do that," she said in a snide voice, hoping her
boss didn't hear her.

"Because I think I love him," he said quietly, his eyes shifting to the
floor.

"If that's the case, why can't you look me in the eyes to tell me?" Her
impatience with these two "pests" was getting more apparent.

Nick looked up and fixed his clear blue eyes on Katy's, "I love him, and I
need him, I have to apologize to him. Please let me talk to him and
explain myself. He doesn't have to accept me, I just want to let him know
how I feel." With that last comment tears formed in his eyes. He was
serious.

"He's at my apartment, here's the address," she said as she scribbled
something on a scratch of paper. "He wasn't awake when I left, so he might
still him be in bed, give him some time to get ready. I'll call him and let
you know when he's ready." Katy punched in, and began her day, trying to
ignore the fact that Brian was still standing at the counter waiting for
her to acknowledge him. Fortunately a large family with screaming children
approached the counter to check in. In the commotion Brian shrunk away from
the crowd realizing that trying to approach her in this situation would
prove to be more bad than good.

Twenty minutes later Katy had gotten everything situated; even arranging
for some babysitting for the evening so the two frazzled parents could have
a quiet dinner together. She then picked up the phone to call her friend.

"Alyx," she purred into the receiver when the machine picked up. "I know
you're there, pick up the phone."

"What," Alyx whined when he picked up the phone.

"I forgot to tell you, the stove is on the fritz, and someone is coming
over today to fix it."

"What time?" Alyx asked sleepily. "I don't really feel like getting up
today, can't you reschedule?"

"He'll be there at about noon, and no I can't reschedule, I've canceled too
many times due to all my extra shifts at work. Do you want me to come and
take over your kitchen every night?"

"Oh GOD no, I know the messes you make when you cook, I don't want to deal
with that, well Mary Ann anyway." Mary Ann was Alyx's housekeeper, she had
been with the Hargrove family since Alyx was born.

"Okay, I'll be up and ready when he gets here. WELL SHIT! That only gives
me 2 hours to get ready." It was apparent Alyx was waking up, his sarcastic
side was shining through.

"Well you better get cracking now, huh?" Katy said with a giggle. "I'll
call you later." And with that she hung up the phone.

She then called up to Nick's room. "He'll be presentable to company by
about 11:30, I told him someone was coming by at noon to fix the stove,"
Katy explained when someone answered the phone.

"Katy?" was the reply. "Its Brian, can we talk now?"

"I'm sorry Mr. Littrell. Oh, I mean Carter. Could you please deliver that
message to your friend? I have to get back to work." She had barely said
the final syllable when she hung up the phone and went to work restocking
the credit card receipts and other such paperwork.
