Eyes of Stone Chapter two

We spent the rest of the night sitting there at the table talking to each
other. I found out that they were in SF to record a couple songs and to make
a few TV appearances. They asked me I knew who they were and I had to tell
them that I did indeed recognize them, but that I really didn't listen to
their music. I mean, for you not to recognize the Backstreet Boys, you've
had to been isolated somewhere in the Amazon jungle for the last six years,
with absolutely no contact with the world. I might not had been able to
recognize them if they traveled alone, but when you seen them as a group,
you would know who they were at once.
They asked me about my life and my work as policeman. I told them that I had
become a cop by chance. It was absolutely not anything that I had wanted as
a child or anything.

"How come that you are a Highway Patrol officer and not an inner-city cop?"
AJ asked while looking at me, still with his shades on.

"I was an inner-city cop the first year on the job, but I found out that I
really didn't like that, so I asked for a transfer to the Highway Patrol.
Normally they don't let a rookie join the Highway Patrol, but I had made a
friend at police headquarters who pulled some strings. And here I am. I
really like my job. I like the fact that I work alone. No partner who is
second-guessing me all the time."

"You really like to be alone all the time?" Kristin asked. "You don't like
to have people around you?"

"Sure, I like to have people around me, but I have been alone for so long
that I just don't mind if I'm by myself."

This caused a few raised eyebrows around the table.

"You don't have a girlfriend, wife?" Kevin asked.

I could really look at him when I answered, so I just stared at the beer in
my hand.

"Nah...I just haven't found the right one yet. I mean, I'm not that into the
whole club scene. Not that there is many clubs around where I live. So I
just don't go out that much. The only time I go to clubs or bars is when I'm
in the city."

"You don't live in SF?" AJ looked at me when asking that. The rest of them
looked really interested in the answer to.

"Nah, I rent a small house in Napa Valley. It belongs to a friend of my
grandmother, so I get it very cheap. I usually spend all my free-time up
there when I'm not competing."

Nick looked at me and asked:

"You compete? In what?"

"I compete in practical shooting. It was something I started with when I
went to college and I found out that I was really good at it."

"Practical shooting?" Brian and Kristin asked at the same time. "What's
that?"

"The simplest explanation is that the shooters walks on a course, where
targets can pop up at any time any where. You have to make use of the course
as best as you can to try to hide, but still get a clear field of vision so
that you can make a clean shot at the right target. This is all timed and
the best shooter with the best time wins. If you come as an audience to one
of the competitions you will see a lot of men and women throwing themselves
behind cars, trees, rock or whatever. It look quite funny but it is useful
to me as a cop."

"You said that there were women as well. You haven't hooked up with one of
them?" Kristin almost threw that question at me. "I mean, you would have the
same interest and all."

What the hell was going on? Why are they so interested in my love-life? I
started to feel like I was going through a hard session in "the Box". I felt
like a criminal accused of some horrible crime. I looked at my watch and saw
that it was almost midnight. I started to stand and this got all their
attention.

"It has been nice to meet you and all, but I really have to go. The ride
back to Napa is a really long one and I really need to get some rest. I'm
working tomorrow night."

"There is no way that you are going to drive to Napa."

We all looked at Howie as he stood up looking me straight in the eyes. He
stretched out his right hand like he wanted something from me.

"Excuse me? I'm not going to drive to Napa? And how the hell do you think
you are?"

I just stared at Howie as AJ, Nick and Brian tried to get Howie to sit down.

"You want to know who I am? I'm the one that is going to call the cops to
tell them that there is a drunk driver heading from SF to Napa. I will also
tell them who you are and what kind of car you drive. That's who I am. Now,
I want you to give me your car keys and then you will have two choices.
Either you take a cab up to Napa, and Lord knows that won't be cheap, or you
will come back with us to our hotel and stay as our guest."

This little outburst from Howie got our attention and I could feel all eyes
on me. I slowly looked each one of them in the eyes to try to see if there
was slight chance that this might not be true. That Howie wouldn't call the
cops on me. I knew that he was right. I had a few beer to much that night
and I would be a danger to anyone that would be out on the roads tonight. I
could see in their eyes that they all agreed with Howie. When I came to
Kevin's eyes I something else as well. I couldn't really figure out what it
was.
I gave Howie my car keys and turned around making my way towards the door. I
made up my mind the same moment I gave Howie the keys that I would try to
find a cab to drive me up to Napa. I didn't want them to feel that I was a
burden or anything to them. I mean, I had almost supported and taken care of
myself since I was a freshman in college. Nobody except my grandmother ever
gave me anything or offered me anything that I would accept. I just didn't
want people to think that I needed them.

I reached the front door of the bar and stepped out on the street. The night
had become a bit chilly so I pulled my jacket closer around me and started
to scan the street for a cab. Not seeing anyone, I turned towards the more
central part of SF to try to see if I could find one there. I had just
walked a couple of block when I heard footsteps behind me.

"Bastian wait!"

It was Kristin. She was the one they decided to use to get me to come back
to the hotel with them. They though that her charm would get to me and that
I would turn to Jell-O in her hands. If they only knew. I couldn't help to
smile a little at that thought.

"C'mon Bastian."

I decided to see what she wanted so I stopped. I didn't turn around though.
That didn't seem to be a problem to her as she in front of me. We just stood
there staring at each other for a couple of moments. Then she started to
smile. I didn't know why but it started to get on my nerves.

"Why the hell are you smiling? I don't find this a least bit amusing. Wipe
tat smile of that face."

Me being annoyed only seemed to widen her smile. Jeez, this woman was
getting on my nerves. She started to talk just as I was about to tell her to
get lost.

"It is just my luck that I had to get to know the other person in the world
that is as stubborn as Nick. I honestly thought that he was the only one in
the world."

I couldn't help it. I just started to laugh. I laughed at the smile Kristin
had plastered all over her face. I laughed at the absurdity of the moment. I
laughed at myself for even thinking that I could get a cab to drive me to
Napa. Soon I laughed so hard that tears started to form in my eyes. I took a
couple of deep breaths and slowly returned to normal.

"I need coffee." I said to her.

She just nodded at me a told me that we could go to the nearest coffee shop.
We could do a little talking just the two of us and the return to the hotel.

"Kristin can I ask you a question?"

"Sure Bastian. Shoot."

It didn't take long for us to find a place that was open. We ordered
ourselves Café Latte and sat down in a corner booth. She didn't say
anything. She just sat there looking at me sipping on her latte. This was
starting to get to me so I realized that I had to start to talk.

"How do you know the Backstreet Boys?"

"I don't." was her short answer.

"And how do you explain that you and I spent the evening with them? If I can
remember correctly you were at the table when I came over to you guys."

"I said that I don't know the BSB and that is the truth."

She sipped her coffee and the started to speak again:

"I met Kevin the first time in the employee cafeteria at Disney World in
Orlando almost eight years ago. We both worked there. I then got to know his
cousin Brian and after a while they got put together with AJ, Howie and
Nick. Kevin and I were dating at the time so it was natural that I
started..."

That's when I started to tune out. Kevin and she dating. My usual luck. The
one guy that I really wanted to know, no wanted to date, was straight. Fuck!
Why the hell did I have to go and fall in love with a straight guy. Wait,
fall in love? Did I really love him or was it just carnal lust. I hoped that
it was lust, but honestly I didn't know.

"...so you see I don't know the BSB. I know Kevin, AJ, Howie, Brian and
Nick. That is a huge difference."

As she finished the sentence she took another sip at her coffee. I still
hadn't recovered from the conversation I had in my head and she noticed this
and just sat there looking at me. I slowly came around and when I realized
that she wasn't talking I snapped into reality again.

"That had to been one of the most intriguing daydreams anybody ever had."
She said with a smile.

"Huh?" was the brilliant reply I had to her statement.

"Never mind. You said that you had gone to college. What was your major?"

"I have a degree in Criminal Psychology."

"I bet that's why you became a cop." She said smilingly

I just nodded at her.

"Bastian, where are you from? I mean, where were you born? Where did you
grow up? What's your parents names? Do you have any sisters or brothers? Did
you play football in high school or anything else? What are your interests?
I want to know everything that there is to know about you."

I just looked at her surprised at this myriad of questions. A counter
question formed in my mind.

"Why do you want to know all that?"

"Because I would like to be your friend. I know that Kevin and the others
want to get to know you too. They were all impressed by you."

A couple of new questions formed, but I knew that I better start to answer
her questions, even though I want to forget my past. I haven't thought about
my past the last two years, but I knew that she wouldn't back down. I had
only known her for a couple of hours but I knew that she always got what she
wanted.

"Ok, I will tell you but you'll have to know that this is the first and only
time I will tell you. I WILL NOT repeat myself ever. You will understand
after I'm finished. Understood?"

I looked her sternly in the eyes waiting for her answer. She just nodded and
I took a deep breath.

"I was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. My dad is in the Navy and is
stationed there. My mom is a nurse and works a the base hospital. I have an
older brother. He is a year older than me. That makes him 26. I went to the
local high school. I didn't play and kind of sport in school. I wasn't a
straight A student but I still finished in the top five percentile of my
class. I got an academic scholarship to pay for my college degree and this
brought me where I am today. My interests aren't many. You know that I
compete in Practical Shooting. The only other things that interests me is
music and books. The only contact I have with my family is that I talk to my
grandmother each week. I haven't spoken to my parents or my brother since my
freshman year in college. That's about it. End of story."

I had looked down at my hands all the time I told my story. I felt Kristin's
hand under my chin trying to force me to look at her. Reluctantly I gave
after and found myself looking in her tear filled eyes.

"Can I ask you why you haven't talked with them?"

I could see in her eyes that she really wanted to know why. She was sincere
about wanting to be my friend.

"They couldn't accept who I slept with. That their baby was..."

I knew from that from that comment she could only come to one conclusion.
That I was gay. Now she knew my big secret.

"You know that I have to ask you this. Are you gay?"

I once again shifted my gaze to my hands, not wanting to look her in the
eyes when the disgust slowly rose to a level that would overflow her system
and she would do the same thing everybody did when they found out. Leave me.

I could hear when she stood up and then the shuffling of feet. That's it!
Now she's gone. I then felt how she sat down next to me and pulled me in to
a hug. We sat there for a while. When I finally calmed down enough she
pulled me to my feet. Somehow she managed to maneuver us out of the coffee
shop and in to a taxi. I fell asleep against her shoulder in the taxi. When
we arrived at the hotel they stayed at she woke me up. She told me that I
was to big for her to carry so I had to walk myself. I can honestly say that
I have no idea how I ended up in the bed. The only thing I know is that I
during the night woke up. Something or someone was in my room. I could hear
voices. There were two of them. I couldn't make out what they said or who
they belonged to. They only words I could hear was:

"...can't believe that they did that to him. Assholes!"

The other voice just told the first one to be quiet and not to say anything
to me in the morning. Then they silenced. I knew that the two persons didn't
leave the room. They just stood there silently, doing nothing.

Then I heard, no felt, the two persons coming closer. I then felt a hand
brush the hair out of my face. Then there was the unmistakable feeling of a
pair of lips gently kissing my forehead. From the scent and the touch I
could tell that it was Kristin. It was the same scent that I could smell
when I was being hugged by her earlier that night.
Then I felt the other person do the same thing. The only thing that was
different was the scent and the fact that the kiss on the forehead was
lingering much longer. It was so gentle that I almost couldn't feel it. I
still couldn't tell who the other person was. It was at that point I drifted
back to sleep.

The sun was merciless in its attempts to pull me from the world of the
nocturnal creatures, but I put up a good fight. Then they voices reached me.
I could hear six voices talking a laughing somewhere outside the bedroom
door. The other thing that I could feel was the smell of coffee. I started
to look at my left wrist to see what time it was, but I found that my watch
was missing. Looking around in the room I saw that my watch was on the top
of the dresser. I pulled of the sheet that I was covered with a found to my
surprise that I was only wearing my boxers.

'What the hell happened last night?' went through my mind. It took a good
ten seconds before my brain pulled out the requested information. I
remember. I met six new friends. I smiled at the thought. I got out of bed
and quickly got dressed. I gathered my things and opened the bedroom door.
I could see all six of them sitting there having breakfast, talking and
joking with each other. AJ noticed me standing in the door watching them.

"Good Morning Bastian! Why don't you join us? There should be enough food
left so you can have a decent breakfast, but you better hurry. Nick and
Brian could easily finish what's left on the table."

"Hey..." Nick tried to say with his mouth full of toast and cereal.

Everybody just laughed at Nick. I was feeling a little hungry so I went up
to the table at sat down. He happened to sit between Howie and Brian. Nick
was next to Brian and AJ next to Howie. That meant that I sat just opposite
Kevin and Kristin. I grabbed a plate of fresh fruit and some toast. I also
got a cup of coffee and a glass of OJ. I started to eat and didn't stop
until he heard Nick call his name. I looked at Nick while he picked up his
glass of OJ and started drinking.

"Sebastian, I have to know. Are you gay?"

I started choking on the OJ and ended up spraying the entire table with the
OJ.

"NICK YOU IDIOT!!" Kristin was furious at Nick.

I was still coughing and had problems breathing, but after a few minutes I
was breathing normally. Kevin and Kristin was yelling at Nick. When they saw
that I was okay they shifted their attention to me and started to apologize.
I just told them that it wasn't necessary.

"Sebastian?"

Nick wanted my attention again.

"What?"

"You didn't answer me. Are you gay?"
