Previously

As soon as Nana entered she walked directly over to the bed, sitting down
beside Michael, putting her hand on his forehead.
Justin stayed a respectable distance away from her, his eyes never leaving
the tender scene in front of him.
"My Mico ,my angel.Nana is here now child.Everything is going to be ok."She
was looking at him with such love and compassion, Justin was overwhelmed.A
tear was slowing moving down his cheek.
She loves him, she loves him so much.
I want that, I want that kind of love.
She pulled down the blanket a bit ,checking Michaels bruise, inspecting his
body, and finding everything was satisfactory, she
tucked him back in and kissed his forehead gently.
"Justin, Mico is my special angel. He is my reason for life.I live life to
make him feel loved."
Justin looked tenderly at her, she was looking at him directly.
Justin didn't look away, he saw tenderness in her eyes, and he felt it was
directed at him.
"Thank you for taking care of Mico for me Justin."
Justin smiled again. She could see the wetness of his eyes.
"It was my pleasure.Michael deserves to be cared for."
Nana smiled, looking back at Michael.
"Well he's sleeping deeply, he should sleep for a while undisturbed. How
about you make me a nice cup of tea."
She quietly got up and Justin gave her his arm again.
Such a gentleman,Helena thought.
They walked back into the living room.Everyone getting up as she sat down.
"I'll make you that tea now,Nana."Justin replied heading into the kitchen,
Lonnie in tow.
Vicky and Steve asked Nana about Michael's condition, she relaying her
opinion.
After a few minutes,Justin and Lonnie came back in , carrying two trays of
snacks and tea and coffee.
EVeryone helped themselves, Justin taking care of Nana's tea himself.
He handed her a cup of tea, laced with honey, as she had asked for.
She took a few sips and light conversation ensued.
She kept looking over at Justin.
He seemed to be more relaxed now,she liked him this way better.
Then she secretly smirked a small smile.
Time to rock his world.
She sat her tea down gently and looked over at him.
Justin smiled.
"Is there something you need, Nana?"
"Yes Justin, I need to know why your in love with my grandson?"

Chapter 9

Justin was stunned. He couldn't move, he felt trapped. How had she known!
Everyone else in the room was dead quiet, all looking at Justin, feeling for
his predicament.
Nana could see the shocked look on Justin's face. She needed to make him
understand her intentions.
She got up quietly out of her chair and walked over, sitting down beside
Justin on the couch.
"You hide it very well, child. But Nana can see things, special things."
"I have always been able to see when someone is in love,Justin. Its my
special gift. Its what my own mother said always
made me special."
Vicky looked at Nana with a new found wonderment. And Vicky couldn't help
smile to herself.
So she has special gifts too?Something tells me this is a very special
family.
"The moment I looked at you in the bedroom with Michael,I was able to see
it. I saw it in your eyes."
Justin shyly smiled at her, finally looking into her eyes.
What he saw there made his heart fill with a quiet peace. There was no hate,
no dissapproval in her beautiful golden brown
eyes, they only showed warmth and understanding. Her eyes were a golden
brown,identical to Michael's.
She continued to look at him, waiting for him to reply to her question.
Justin felt safe telling her his secret, his realization.
"I am in love with your grandson because he completes me.For a long time
now, I have felt lost, as if something special was
missing from my life.I never felt whole until I looked into his eyes. The
first moment I looked at him I felt that he was the one part of myself that
had always been missing. He was the love that I had always needed, that I had
always hoped to find.
And now that I have found him, even knowing him for this short time, I can
honestly say that I will be lost again without him."
Justin's eyes were glistening with hidden tears.
Nana placed her hand on Justin's cheek, wiping a fallen tear away.
"Justin, it took a lot of courage to show your true feelings,to a
stranger. And I believe that you are sincere and honest about those
feelings. Its always good to be true to yourself first, then you can be true
to others."
Nana smiled a warm caring smile at him.
"Does my grandson know how you feel, and does he know what he means to you?"
Justin smiled back."I have told him how I feel, and it did surprise him. He
has agreed that he wants to get to know me better.I want him to know the
real me as much as I want to know his real self.I should let you know that
we have kissed."
Vicky,Lonnie and Steve looked at Justin, surprise registering on their faces.
Justin blushed, forgetting that he hadn't told them.
"Never be ashamed of showing your love,Justin.A kiss is a measure of true
love.Love always needs to be expressed.Especially with Michael. He needs it
more that anyone else."
Nana's face slowly changed, as if she was thinking about something.
Justin looked concerned for her."Is everything all right, Nana?"
"I am just surprised, thats all.Michael has always guarded his feelings very
closely,I am surprised that he allowed you to kiss him."
"Why does that surprise you,Nana.I find Michael to be very loving and
gentle.Yes,it was an intimate kiss, but we both felt we wanted to do it."
"You must be a very speical man, Justin.Believe me, Michael isn't like that
usually, for very different reasons."
Nana's face still remained unsettled, like she was weighing her words
carefully.
"What has Michael told you about himself,Justin?About his past?"
Justin thought about what Michael had told him that day.
"Well, he told me his parents died when he was nine, that he was in a foster
home until you found him. That you raised him since then, and he feels you are
more his mother than his grandmother. He told me about Uncle Silas, and his
being a role model for him."
Nana smiled at the mention of Michael's thinkng of her as his mother. That
brought a special warmth into her heart.
"Yes Justin, I have always felt that Mico was more to me than a grandson,he
is a very special person."
Justin smiled again, feeling more relaxed and comfortable with this
wonderful lady.
Justin contined,"I know, or feel, that he has been hurt deeply by someone,
or more that one person in his life.I have seen his scars, and I see pain
deep in his eyes.It hurts me to think that someone hurt him so much that
he's afraid to trust someone again. And that he's afraid to open and trust
me."
Nana leaned over and hugged Justin close to her.
What an insightful young man,he really sees things clearly. This is a genuine
caring person.
"Yes Justin, Mico has been hurt.I know part of it, but not all of it.Mico
has always keep his secrets close to his heart.
He carries a heavy burden in his heart. At times it weighs him down.I believe
he is scared to let it out into the open, to free himself of it so that he
can heal himself. He's afraid to take the leap of faith.
But, I will tell you this, Mico's heart is large, his capacity to give love
unending. All I hope for is that one day my angel can let another's love into
his own heart, then his heart will be healed again.
Nana pulled slowly back from Justin and looked him in the eyes.
Now there were tears in her eyes.
"I think I see that love in you, Justin.I think you are the one who can heal
his heart."
Justin's smile lit up his whole face.Nana had just said the words Justin had
hoped to hear. She believed in him too.
The two of them hugged again, everyone else fighting back tears.
Vicky broke the pleasant silence after a few moments.
"Nana, all of us care about Michael.I have known him the longest, and there
has always been a loneliness about him, a quietness.YOu are right, he does
keep his past hidden inside himself.I have seen him go through some deep
depression and some severe mood swings. But he has always been giving and
caring, giving everything of himself and never asked for it in return.
He is the most unselfish person I have ever met.And I know there is
something different about him, something special.I saw a glimpse of how
special he really is."
Nana's face remained the same, but her body tensed a bit, Justin could sense
that beside her.
"Can you tell us more about Michael's past, his history."Justin asked.
"I will try to give you as much information as I can about Mico. But you must
understand that my main concern is his feelings."
They all understood that, they knew Nana would always protect Michael.
Vicky thought for a moment."Can I ask you a question?"
Nana nodded.
"Why doesn't Michael like to celebrate his birthday?"
Nana's discomfort became evident.
"When is his birthday?" Justin asked, looking back and forth between the two
of them.
"April 5th."Vicky replied.
Nana looked at Vicky, pondering carefully. She looked at everyone around her.
Yes, these are Mico's friends.I see only love and caring on all their
faces.Especially on Justin's.
They need to know this.Yes, especially Justin. If Justin has any chance of
healing Michael's heart he needs to know everything.
Nana got up, walked over to her purse , which was sitting on the end
table,and returned with it.
She sat down beside Justin again.
She opened her purse and pulled out a wallet shaped folder.
She looked at everyone quietly and then let out a long sigh.

"Vicky, I know Mico loves you very much, he would never hurt you.
But unfortunately,he has lied to you."
Vicky's face showed unease.
Nana pulled out a yellowed document, that was folded in two.
"Take a look at this." she said, handing the document to Justin.
Justin took the document, Vicky,Steve and Lonnie stood up and crowded around
Justin, looking over his shoulder.
It was a birth certificate.
Justin read the name and date of birth out loud.

"Michaelangelo Augustus Tavarro, born Jan 31,1981"

Justin dropped the document.
His face went blank. He looked shocked.
Vicky and Steve looked at him with grave concern.
"What is it Justin?"
Nana also was concerned, she put her hand on his arm.Justin turned and
looked at her.
It was as if he was struggling to understand something. She rubbed his arm
gently.
"what is it,child?"
Justins thoughts were flying through his mind.
Could it possibly be real.
Could this be true?
Its too much of a coincidence to not be.
Somehow I knew it all along.

"Its the date. His date of birth. He was born on the same day as me."
EVeryone looked stunned.This was uncanny.
Justin looked long and hard at the document, reading all the information.
Then Justin smiled.A truly genuine heartfelt smile.
"Don't you see.I know now.I am sure of it now."
Justin seemed ecstatic.Like he wanted to jump for joy.
Vicky put her hand on Justin's shoulder.
"What do you know,Justin?"
"We came into this world together.Together on the same day.
We are two parts of the same soul.
We were meant to find each other. To unite to create one loving soul.
I know in my heart now that he is my soulmate."
Vicky looked at Justin, seeing his happiness, his hope and belief that it was
true. But she was feeling something else at that moment. She was feeling
concern.
She had to find some answers.
"Why did he lie to me,Nana? Why has he always told me that April 5th was his
birthday?"
Nana closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, then opened them again.
They could see a fresh tear in her brown eyes.
She asked everone to sit back down in their chairs.
She got up slowly, and walked over towards the bedroom door.
She put her hands on the door, turning the knob and peeking into the room.
"My angel,my precious baby."She whispered softy.
Slowly she turned around and walked back to them and stood beside the chair
Vicky was seated in.
"I just wanted to make sure Mico was asleep before we continued."
She moved her hand down and locked hands with Vicky.
"Michael loves you,Victoria. He thinks of you as the sister he never had.
He never meant to lie to you.If you look at it a different way, he hasn't."
Vicky was really puzzled now,and confused.
"April 5th, in a way is his birthday. Its what he wants to be his birthday.
Its the day he started his new life with me.Its the day I found him in that
horrible foster home.
EVery year since he came to live with me, he and I would spend that special
day together, just being with each other.
It became a special day for both of us. Michael decide then to use it as his
birth date."
"Why doesn't he want to use his real birthday?"Vicky said trying to urge
Nana on with her story.
"Vicky, let Nana talk, she will tell you why."Steve said, in an admonishing
tone.
Vicky blushed a little, looking up into Nana's brown eyes.
"Sorry Nana, please go on,i will be silent."
Nana patted Vicky's shoulder in a caring way.
"Because his real birth date is a painful day for Michael.
Its a day that in some ways, terrifies him.
I know partly why that is, but I believe there is more.
Something very tragic happened to Michael then.So tragic that Michael runs
from it, hides from himself to make it go away.
I am sure you have noticed how he dissappears on that day."
Vicky realized that Nana was telling the truth.
"Yes,every year at the end of January Michael went away for a few days,he
told me he went home to spent some time with you.
He claimed it was a mini vacation."
"It was never a vacation,Vicky. And he didn't come home to me.
Its a day of grief for him, a personal grief, that he faces alone every
year.
For the past 15 years he has dissappeared on that day.
I don't know where he goes, but I have my suspicions.
But i can never bring myself to ask him the truth.Any time I have
attempted,he has walked away from me.His grief is closed off to everyone, he
faces it alone.
I think he feels he has to do it that way to make peace with himself.
I just wish he would let me in,let me be there for him."
Nana was fighting to keep her feelings in check.
Justin felt in his heart that something painful was associated with that day
for Michael.
She looking at Justin for a few moments, then steeled herself inside.
"Let me tell you the story of Michael's life.
You should know it.Even if he can't bring himself to tell you about it, I
feel in my heart you are his friends, and he needs your support and love."
Nana sat down again beside Justin.Justin put his hand on her's.
"Michael's mother was my daughter. She was my only child.
She had always been such a loving, caring, sweet child.
She had made her father and I very proud. She was such a gifted child, so
promising. We held such hopes for her future.
But one day when she was nineteen, a man came into her life, and swept her
off her feet.
My husband and I didn't believe that he was good enough for her.
Words and arguments were exchanged. We tried everything to convince her that
this wasn't what she needed.
But she was in love, and in the end she went with her heart. She chose him
over her future.
It broke her father's heart. He couldn't comprehend why she would throw away
everything for him.
She and her new love walked out of our lives.
For five years we didn't hear anything from her,we didn't know if she was
alive or dead.
Then one day I got a phone call from her, she was now a mother, she had a
beautiful child, Michael.
Michaelangelo Augustus.
Michaelangelo she chose for her love of art.
Augustus for her father.
I hoped her father would have been happy about that, but he didn't show it.
He still couldn't let himself forgive her.And it cost him the chance to meet
his beautiful grandchild.
My daughter had finally called me.But for a reason.
They were in trouble.Financial trouble.I still wanted to help her so I wired
her money.
Then it was another 4 years before we heard from her again.
This time it was because of Michael.
Up until Michael was eight, I had never met him.Our first meeting was in a
hospital,He had fallen down a flight of stairs and he was in a coma. For two
weeks they didn't know if he would live or die.
She had called me again for money.Money to pay for his medical bills and
treatment.
I gave her the money but only on the condition that I could deliver it in
person.
So I went to San Francisco, to a stark, lonely hospital room ,where I saw my
grandson for the first time.
He looked so beautiful,so handsome.Even in a coma his looks were that of an
angel."
Justin enveloped his hand in Nana's.She sensed that to him ,Michael looked
like an angel also. She smiled at the comfort he was giving her.
"A short time later that same day that I arrived ,Mico came out of that
coma. When I looked at him he had a smile so loving,it warmed my heart.I
always thought, or hoped, that my being there, my new love for him, made him
wake up.
And when awake he was a beaming, bright sweet boy.If you ever looked into his
golden brown eyes you would feel that a special gift from god had been
planted there.I stayed for four days, and in those four days I fell in love
with him.
I hated to leave him, but I had to go back to my own life.To my loving
husband.He needed me.
Eight months later my husband tragically died of a heart attack."
Justin could feel her loss, he could sense it in her words and her eyes.He
hugged her tightly, letting her compose herself.
"Understand me,he was my life, my love.I too, like my daughter, had married
for love.I had made that same choice against my own parents. We loved each
other very much.
After he died I felt so alone,so empty.
I knew what I needed, I needed my daughter back in my life.I needed my
beautiful grandson.
But when I went back, they were gone. They had left San Fransisco.
I searched in vain to find them, even hiring detectives.
It those detectives another six months to find where they had vanished to.
In the end it was too late for me to find peace with my daughter. They only
found Michael.
I had been informed by the detectives, and later, the police, that my daughter
had died.
In a short span of time I had lost my husband and my only child."
Justin contined to hold Nana,a tear falling down her cheek.
"Michael had been put in a foster home because Michael was all alone.
His father was gone.
They searched for relatives, and finding none, they put his in that
home.That dreadful home.
I later learned that Michael was neglected and hurt in that home. After I had
found him,I made it my purpose to expose the
poor conditions there, and thankfully they were shut down.
The police also told me the truth about what happened to my daughter and her
worthless husband."
Nana stared into space, her feelings starting to waver.
Everyone waited for her to continue. She sat there,as if the memories of that
truth ,hurt her greatly.
After a few moments, Justin kissed her lightly on her wet cheek, she turning
to look at him.
"I know this must be painful for you, take your time.We are in no
rush."Justin looking at her with tenderness and concern.
Such a kind, caring young man, Nana thought.
He will be so good for Mico.
She sighed again, and continued.
"I learned that truth about how worthless that man really was."
Nana looked at everyone staring at her.
"Michael's father isn't dead."
Everyone looked at her in shock.
"At least as far as I know."

Michael woke drowsily from his slumber. He had thought he heard Nana's
voice. She must have arrived safely, he thought.
He stretched his arms over his head. How long had he slept?
He felt much better, his headache had receded a lot. It was now just a
nagging pain in the back of his head.
He slowly got up,suddenly realizing that he was in only his boxer briefs.
Who had undressed him.
Justin?
Oh god, he hoped not.
The thought of Justin seeing his skinny disfigured body, made Michael feel
ashamed.
Compared to Justin's god like physique, Michael felt very inadequate.
Michael quickly put Justin's tshirt back on and the sweatpants that were
folded neatly at the end of the bed.He took a drink
of water from the glass on the endtable beside the bed.It was warm, Michael
suspecting that he had slept for a few hours.
He briefly remembered Justin being in the bed and getting up.He had asked
him what was going on and Justin had said for him to go back to sleep, babe.
Babe.Justin had called him babe.
That warmed Michael's insides.Did he really care that much for him?
Did he really?
Michael shyly smiled, thinking about Justin. What the last day had brought
into his life.
Never would he have imagined that someone like him would want to care about
him.
Justin Timberlake said he had feelings for him.For him!
Michael still couldn't believe it.He hoped it was true.Michael was beginning
to hope with all his heart that it was true.
But there was that small shred of doubt in Michael's mind, that horrid fear,
that uncertainty.
That dread of being used again.
But he was starting to hope that maybe this time, maybe if he hoped and
prayed enough, that this time it would be real.
Michael rose out of the large bed and walked over towards the door.He heard
people talking.
He immediately identified Justin's voice, it melodic sound sending a shiver
up Michael's back.Everything about the man was unbelieveably. His looks, his
voice, his caring manner. It was as if everything Michael wanted was wrapped
up in this one man. Michael recognized Vicky's voice.
And yes, Nana's.
Michael smiled. His Nana was here.
She had been the one saving factor in his turbulent life. His anchor. It
didn't surprise him that she came here,he somehow knew in his heart that she
would drop everything to make sure he was safe.
He leaned against the door, hearing their voices.
Then he began to listen to their words.
His face went ashen.
Nana was talking about him.
About his past,about his mom.
And about his father.
No, god no, not about him.
No, please don't tell them, please don't let them know.
Michael opened the door, fear etched on his face just as Nana revealed that
his father was alive.

Please Nana, don't tell them, Please!!"
Everyone's head turned quickly, looking at Michael standing in the bedroom
entrance.
He looked like his world had come crashing down.
Fear flowed from his eyes,he was on the verge of crying.
Justin got up immediately and rushed to his side.He took Michael in his
arms,staring into his eyes.
"Babe, whats wrong, you look frightened, you look scared."Justin couldn't
believe the look on Michael's face.
Michael's face was focused on his grandmother.
"Please stop,Nana.I don't want them to know any of this, please."
Michael fell into Justin's arms trembling, holding onto him for dear life,as
if he thought he would leave him.
Justin held on tight.
Nana got up and walked over to her angel.
"Mico, I am sorry,I know you don't want them to know.I knew you would be
hurt by this, but your pain has to end now.
I have seen only love in their eyes for you, my child.
These are your friends. They care about you. They deserve to know, Michael.
They deserve to know what you went through, and I think its time you let it
all out."
Michael looked up at his grandmother, seeing the unyielding love in her
tender brown eyes.
He couldn't tell her, he couldn't tell her what he had done.
She loved him so much, and he couldn't bring himself to hurt her,to let her
know the truth.
"I can't Nana, I can't tell you.You wouldn't love me any more.I'd lose
you,all of you,and I couldn't bear that."
Michael pushed away from Justin, but Justin held on,trying to hold him
still.
"Let me go,Justin.Let me go!"A sense of despiration in Michael's voice.
Michael was pushing away from him.
Justin released him , unsure and even afraid of what Michael was going to
do.
Michael back up against the wall.
"You don't understand, I hurt someone very deeply, so deeply that they hurt
me back a thousand times worse."
Everyone looked at Michael, tears beginning to fall down his face.
"It started with my father.I loved his so much, and he hurt me so much.
Then he hurt my mom,and she was so hurt by that, that she hurt me.It was
always my fault." Michael was starting to tremble.
"Michael, tell us, tell me ,what they did to you."Nana was inching closer to
him, concern and fear starting to cross her face. She so wanted just to hold
him in her arms.
Justin was way ahead of her.
He reached out to Michael, opening his arms.
Michael looked fearfully into Justin's eyes and saw what he didn't expect to
see there, what he had only hoped to see there.
He rushed into his arms, feeling safe, feeling safe for the first time in a
long time.
Justin just held him, quietly, looking at the others, telling them with his
eyes just to leave them be.
Everyone remained silent.
They stayed like that against the wall, holding each other, for what seemed
forever.
Then Justin lightly rubbed Michael's head, kissing his cheek.
"hows your headache,Mikey? You need to sit down, babe, let's sit down on the
couch."
Michael let Justin lead him to the couch. He pulled him down onto it,sitting
right next to him, never breaking contact with him.
Continually rubbing his back with his arm around him, making him feel safe.
"My headache is almost gone, I feel good."Michael said in almost a whisper.
Michael looked up into Justin's eyes, he saw love, love he had longed for.
But would he love him, could he love him, when he told him the truth?
Michael didn't speak, he couldn't break his eye contact with Justin.
Justin sensed he needed him there, close.
"Its ok,babe. You have nothing to fear from me,I will always be here for
you.I will always be here."
Justin felt he had to keep Michael talking,to open himself up to him.
"Nana just wants you to be happy,Mikey. She and all of us know your in pain,
a deep hurting pain.We only want to be there for you."
Michael knew Justin was speaking the truth.
"Is your father alive, Mikey?"
Michael took a deep breath, exhaling and sighing.
"Yes Justin, he is alive.Or was the last time I saw him.Which was when I was
nine."
Michael was starting to rub his right hand, rubbing his scar.
Justin picked up on it again.
He looked over at Nana, who was watching him with tears in her eyes.
"Let it go child, let all the hurt out.Tell us what happened."

Michael's voice started as a whisper.
"The last time I saw my father they were taking him away to prison."
Everyone looked at Michael, not knowing what to say.
They all remained quiet, letting him continue.
"He had been arrested for armed robbery, he and two of his friends had
robbed a bank, where my father had worked as a janitor.A guard had been shot,
and later died.
They were charged with armed robbery, and manslaughter.
He was sentenced to twenty years without parole. For all I know he is still
there,in prison."
Michael got up slowly,Justin letting him go,but continuing to watch him.
He walked over to the window, looking out at the setting sun.
The world looked so peaceful, so alive.
Why can't I have that peace, why can't I live.
"The day he went to prison was the happiest day of my life.
I hated him so much, I feared him so much.
He had hurt me so much. You can't imagine how much he hurt me.
I saw it as the day the hurting stopped. But I was wrong, so wrong."
Michael turned and looked at everyone. They were all watching him, listening
to him.
"Do you remember the first time you saw me ,Nana?"
"Yes Mico, at the hospital. You were hurt."Nana's eyes never leaving his
face.
"I don't remember much of what happened that night,it's all a fog.
But I do know I didn't fall down any stairs that night."
Everyone tensed in their seats.
Michael looked into Justin's blue eyes.He felt his pain give way.
"My father beat me so badly that night,I almost died."
