saddled my horse. Jimmy and I rode out to meet his parents. We had a chance
to talk. I learned that Jimmy was an only child and would turn 18 in a two
weeks. His dad had been working as a farm hand. His employer sold out and
his dad was left with no job and no money. He had not been able to find a
new job. The new owners were coming in two weeks and Jimmy and his parents
had to be out by that time. They were just going to move to the mountains
and live off the land.

Jimmy introduced his parents, Willie and Betty Reese. He left to do the
chores and take care of his horse. I knew that he just wanted to let his
parents make a decision on their own. We just visited for a time and had
coffee.

"I have proposition for you. It would involve leaving here and going to
Oregon with me. I have two wagons and I need a driver for one of them. I
will provide all the supplies and a salary. When we reach our destination,
I will buy you a farm, equipment and livestock. I will give you a little
time and will go out and help Jimmy with his chores. I'll be back in a few
minutes."

"Charlie, you don't have to leave. Betty and I can just make our
decision. In fact, I think we have already made it. Would you please fetch
Jimmy for us? Thank you."

"Willie, that sounds good! I`ll go and get him now."

I went into the barn and found Jimmy with his pants down and beating his
meat.. He started to stop but I told him that I would help him out. I took
over and finished him off. No words were exchanged. I stayed out in the
barn and helped Jimmy finish feeding the livestock and then we went into
the house.

"Charlie, we came to a decision. Jimmy will drive your wagon. We will have
our own to drive. Only we won't take a salary. Our supplies will be pay
enough. We have a wagon and four oxen and will at the fort in two
days. Jimmy told us that the wagon train would be leaving in three days."

"I'll agree on one condition. Jimmy gets a salary. He is approaching the
age of being on his own. If he saves his money, he'll at least have a
start. Ok, with you Jimmy?"

"You bet. I will never turn down free money."

"Young man, there is no such thing as free money. You will earn every penny
of it. Do you all have saddle horses?"

"Yes." replied Willie.

"The reason I ask is because I have some extra live livestock with me. I
will be needing Betty to help a young girl traveling with me to drive
them. "If she can handle a team, she could trade off with the two of you."

"I want you to know that I can handle a team better that either of my men,"
Betty said laughing.

"Believe me! Mom is better than Dad and me put together." admitted Jimmy.

"I think that I will head back to the fort and I will see you in two
days. Betty, I will wait for you and then we can go shopping for supplies
together. So I will see you then.*****

Mary Ann was waiting in the wagon camp when I got there. She had our
evening meal all ready when I arrived. We both were talking non-stop,
bringing the other up to date on the happening around the fort and
surrounding area.

"Mary Ann, I have fallen in love with you. Would you be my wife. We can get
married here at the fort before we leave."She came to my arms and started
crying. "Charlie, I have fallen in love with you also but I can't marry
you. Let's go inside the wagon and draw the curtains and I will tell you
why."

"Mary Ann, I want you to be my wife regardless of your past."

"Charley, my whole life has been a complete lie. I have told no one my
secret not even the woman and her boyfriend who helped me with my
defenses. I have always been little for my age. In fact all the girls my
age were taller than me. When I went through puberty, I was sure that I
would grow a little in size and have a beard. I didn't! The only hair I
have is on my head and my private places. I remained the size that I am
now. My dad wanted a man and not a wimpy boy for a son. I was a complete
disappointment to him. Yes, Charlie, I am a boy and not a girl."

"I can't believe that. You are a very good looking girl!"

"Charlie, that is the reason I wanted you to come into the wagon and draw
the curtains. I knew that you wouldn't believe me so I wanted to show you."
Mary Ann took off her clothes include all the padding that made her look
like a woman.

"Mary Ann, I can't believe what I am seeing. Not only do you have a man's
body but a well endowed one at that. Most men would die of envy to have one
as big as yours."

"I was given the name James Lee at birth. My father hated me and became
very abusive. I couldn't take it anymore and ran away from home. I stole
some money from my parents to live on for awhile. I went to a seamstress in

looked like a girl. She made me several dresses and helped me get shoes and
other thing to make me look feminine. She also showed me how to talk, walk,

where to look to find some money that she had saved. I was able to live for
several months and was broke again."

"Mary Ann, where did you learn to cook. You are one of the best!"

"My mother was a very good cook and I spent all my time in the kitchen
helping her. You might say I had a natural talent. Even though it almost
broke her heart, she though it was best that I leave. She was afraid that
my dad would end-up killing me and maybe even her. The part about living
with an old aunt was all a big lie but it helped explain why I am traveling
alone. I became Mary Ann. James Lee no longer exist."

dressed. I don't want to take the chance that someone may see us. We'll
plan how we are going to handle this situation. I will wait for you

married. No one would have to know our secret.. However, it would mean not
having any children unless we adopted some."

" You know this would never be accepted by society or the church. It would
mean living a lie for the rest of our lives. Let's saddle our horses and
ride out and visit with the Nortons. I think they are the only people we
can trust to keep our secret and I would like to get their feeling and
advice."

"Charlie, I agree. Let's go first thing in the morning! It is getting a
little late and I don`t want to be riding after dark."

"First thing in the morning, it is."We went to bed and played with each
other for a little bit and went to sleep. Mary Ann and I were up early and
headed for the Norton farm. We were getting close and we saw a wagon that
had turned over. As we got closer we could see that a man was pinned under
the wagon and a woman was lying near him. She sat up as we got nearer and
started waving her arms.

"At least one person is still alive. I just hope we are not too late if
there are others," I whispered."Think positive!" replied Mary Ann.

We pulled up next to the wagon, jumped down and ran to the woman. "I am
ok.. Just plain worn out from trying to get my husband from underneath the
wagon. He is alive and may just have a broken leg. I was thrown clear and
not hurt."

"The first we will have to do is move the wagon off him. Then I can check
him out. Is there anyone inside the wagon?"

"No, my grandson went to catch the horses. They were extra ones that we
used to relieve the oxen which are hobbled over near that tree. We do have
a granddaughter, Jennie who is a twin to our grandson. They just turned
18. She went to the creek to get a bucket of water." May Belle said.

"Look, I see a rider coming and he is leading two horses with him. Just
look at the size of them. They are huge." said Mary Ann.

"Jeff, I am so glad that you were able to catch the horses Maybe we can use
them to pull the wagon up on its wheels. Get the harnesses off the wagon
and put them on the horses. We can attach ropes to each harness and maybe
the horses will be able to pull the wagon upright." May Belle said. I see
Jenny coming. She can help with the wagon.

In no time at all, we had the wagon off the man and upright. He lucked out
and was just pinned under the wagon. No broken bones. His legs started to
hurt when the blood started circulating again.

"Luke, serves you right for falling asleep and hitting that ditch. Next
time I bet you'll watch where you are going."

"Listen, Old Woman, if you keep flapping your jaws, the job will be
yours. I would like to see if you could do any better."

"Where are you people headed?" I asked changing the subject.

"We are headed for Oregon. We just joined a wagon train . We don't travel
on Sundays so the rest of wagon train left us on our own. Right now we were
just trying to make the fort. We through we would lay over and wait for
another wagon train headed west."

"What are we going to have to do to get the wagon operational again!" I
asked.

Luke was just sitting near the wagon. " The tongue came off when the wagon
turned over. I think the tongue pin broke and needs to be replaced. I have
an extra one in the tool box that we can use. Jeff would you get it and do
you think you can put it back together.?"

"If I can get some help holding the tongue in place, I am sure that I can
drive the pin back into the socket."If Mary Ann and Jennie can help me, I
am sure that we can hold the tongue in place while Jeff pounds the pin in."

"I think that we can all help," said May Belle.

The wagon was soon ready to move. "If you head due South, you'll reach Fort
Kearney. It is just a couple of hours travel from here. Tell the Commander
that Charley sent you. Stay there and we will return maybe tonight and if
not tomorrow."*****John and Lisa were very glad to see us. They were
bubbling with enthusiasm. They were glad that we had found someone to
replace them as drivers for my wagon.

"Mr. and Mrs. Norton, Mary Ann and I have something very private and it
must be kept a secret. No one must ever know the truth. May we talk with
you?"

"Of course you can. I can tell that something very important has come up
and you need our advice." said Mrs. Norton. John was shaking his head in
agreement.

"I will just keep quite and let Mary Ann tell you all about our
troubles. Then I will take over."

Mary Ann told her story exactly as she had told it me, leaving out the
visual demonstration.

"I have asked Mary Ann to marry me. Then she told me why she couldn't. We
are considering marriage anyway and continuing with Mary Ann's
deception. We both know what the community and the church would do if they
were ever to find out. So we came to you seeking advice. Neither one of us
have family or close friends to turn to for advice. We are on our own and
we just don`t know what to do."

John questioned, "Mary Ann, do you ever wish that life would have been
different for you?"

"No, I haven't. I have convinced myself that God gave me this body for some
reason and it is not mine to question." replied Mary Ann.

"I think that is part of the answer. I would say for the both of you put
your trust in God and to talk with him. I am sure that he will tell you
what he wants. He is not going to come out and tell you but you both will
feel it in your hearts. I say listen to your inter-self. He may choose
another way, but you will know when he answers."

"I agree with John. God is love and understanding. I am sure that you would
be married in his eyes. However, this won't be the case with society. I
think he has some little children that are orphaned and he wants you to
have them.""Mrs. Norton, I think that God was using you to give us the
answer we are seeking. I had a very strange feeling when you were talking."

"I had that same feeling and that is the reason that I am crying. Please
come to our wedding which will happen as soon as we get back," sobbed Mary
Ann

"We will go over to Laura's and invite all of them our wedding."."Charley,
there is a woman doctor over there. She rescued a young woman from the
Indians. They arrived early this morning. I just wanted to let you know so
that you wouldn't be surprised. We were going to bring them to the fort in
the morning. They came in two wagons. The young woman was taken prisoner
not far from here. They stopped by her place on the way here. Her husband
had been killed the day before, probably by the tribe from which the girl
escaped from. They filled two wagons and made it here.

On the way to Laura's, Mary Ann asked, "Do you think that God was really
talking to us?"

"Yes, I do. I know that he answers prayer sometimes in mysterious ways. I
have a very good feeling inside me, now."

"So do I. What about our sex life?" asked Mary Ann.

"Our sex life will be ours alone and private. We will just have to tell the
other what we like and don't like. All married couples go through this
period of adjustment. I can't wait to get started," I said laughing.

"Just like a man! All they ever think about is sex!" Marry Ann said
laughing with me.
