After the mentally exhausting evening, we all decided that it was time for
bed, with that good old British night-cap, hot sweet cocoa. Mugs in hand we
processed upstairs and without a word, not bothering to get washed, all
three of us got into the double bed in the guest room, Rob's bed. The cocoa
was quickly consumed, the lights put out and three completely drained, naked
men were asleep in no time, Derek between Rob and me. I am quite sensitised
to ringing telephones and when the bedside phone rang just after seven
o'clock, I answered it before the others were awakened. It was Sarah; she
had just heard the news from the night before. I quietly said I would call
her straight back and slipped out of bed, with my morning woodie pointing
the way. I was amused to notice that Rob and Derek were lying on their
backs, with two tents in the single sheet which was all that covered us
through the warm night.

Sarah was puzzled as to why I had to call back from the downstairs phone but
told me that two policemen had been killed did I know? Standing naked in
the kitchen, I did not go into great detail but told her that Derek had been
involved, that he was pretty shaken up but unhurt and that he had spent the
night with Rob and me because Jane was away. We arranged that I would pick
her up from the railway station when she returned from London that afternoon
and that was that.

I made three mugs of tea and took them upstairs. Having put the tea on the
bedside table, I could not resist the temptation to tweak the two tents.
Both men leapt from their slumbers, casting the sheet aside, revealing their
manhood in full glory! At that point, Alison called; she, too, had heard
the news and was anxious in case it was anywhere near us. Rob stood,
sub-consciously playing with his wedding tackle, spoke to her in reassurance
without reference to Derek, who by now was on his mobile to Jane. Her news
of the second death brought tears back to his eyes. We were joined in our
bear-hug by Rob, a totally asexual conjoining for our mutual comfort.

We shaved, showered, dressed and ate a meagre breakfast in near silence.
George rang the doorbell to ask if we had a problem after seeing the police
car on the drive, not realising it had been there all night. I briefly
explained to him that Derek was a friend of ours who had been involved with
the shooting incident at Stonebridge. Derek came to the door, dressed in
his uniform trousers and shirt, still clearly shocked, but able to explain
the case briefly to George, who had heard nothing about it.

Rob said he would walk to work and called in to say he would be a little
late; Derek called in and agreed that he would report to the station in an
hour or so after he had been for a walk to clear his mind, but that he would
then like to take a couple of days off, which was also agreed. I rang my
assistant to say I had decided to work at home but if there were any
problems then she should call me and I would go in. I was, in any case,
anxious to finish a presentation for senior managers explaining the planned
company reorganisation, more especially that there would be no staff
redundancies; this was something we had a proud record of, despite the
several mergers and takeovers that had occurred as the company had grown
over the last few years. Our simultaneous organic growth was indeed a
tribute to all the staff and in turn meant that we had absorbed all those
who might otherwise have been superfluous, a target against which the senior
management was measured.

Derek was much calmer when he returned after walking in Tocil Woods for
nearly an hour. I jokingly asked if there was any action; he replied that
if there had been he hadn't seen it! He had coffee with me, collected his
kit which had still been in a heap on the lounge floor and embraced me in
yet another bear-hug, truly grateful that we had been able to offer him
comfort the previous evening. He even reminded me that he was planning to
get Rob and I finger-printed and DNA checked, but added ominously that
"These days, you never know when something might happen!"

I only half-jokingly, suggested that we should also get our names tattooed
on our bums, to which he replied that there was plenty of space on our
dicks. With that, he was gone, saying he would be in touch soon which I
didn't doubt would be in more ways than one!

I made the beds, washed-up and put the towels into the washing machine
before settling down to work. I had a very good day work-wise, in fact I
was going so well that I was nearly forgot to deal with the washing machine
and was almost late picking up Sarah and Rob. Somehow, it is more
comfortable to work in shorts and a tee-shirt, rather than a suit and tie –
even if one's jacket always got discarded the moment one walked into the
office! I was pretty well satisfied with the reorganisation plan but I
needed to run it past Hubert, Jerry, Tom and Jill in head office so I
emailed copies to them and called my assistant to schedule a conference call
for the following week. She said that everyone in the office was in a state
of shock over the shooting. I was glad I had stayed at home and therefore
done some work which otherwise would have been undone.

When I picked up Rob he said that the shootings were virtually the only
topic of conversation at work and Sarah had also picked up most of the news
during the day. We updated her about Derek's involvement, sparing some of
the more intimate details! We decided to have a quick pub meal instead of
cooking and were home by about eight o'clock to find that David had left a
phone message saying Hannah was in hospital with her baby on the way. Of
course Sarah tried to call him back but she was left in suspense when there
was no reply and no updated news from my mother either! Naturally, babies
were the main topic of conversation for the rest of the evening. Rob packed
his bag to go home next day; Sarah and I were in bed by about ten o'clock,
though it was an hour or so later before we got to sleep!

Two naked bodies leapt from our bed when the phone rang just after seven
next morning. It was David. Hannah had safely delivered another son
weighing just less than eight pounds, and who was to be called Brian
Nicholas. Mother and son would be coming out of hospital after lunch. The
news led to his uncle and aunt engaging in a bare skin embrace which livened
up Percy, but there was no time for any more than that! Sarah instantly
decided that we should visit them on Sunday and also call on my mother, who
hadn't been too well lately, at the same time. Still naked, I woke Rob with
the news; I think his initial delight was clouded a bit by envy when he
thought about his own situation but a naked, brotherly embrace and a bit of
mutual dick tweaking soon got him back to normal!

We got washed and dressed, had breakfast, took our leave of Sarah who was
still in her dressing gown and went off to work. I dropped Rob at his
office; one of his colleagues would take him to the airport later. My
Friday was pretty much routine, punctuated by dealing with a few loose ends
of my promotion which was to take effect from Monday! For once I was home
on time and after changing into "something more comfortable" Sarah and I
enjoyed a leisurely dinner `a deux', after which we did the weekly shopping
which, by chance, left the Saturday relatively free!

Derek called on Saturday morning and said he was on a week's compassionate
leave but that he felt that he had now come to terms with his trauma. He
had joined Jane for her parents' ruby wedding party with any discussion of
work being declared strictly off limits! Towards lunch time, Gladys popped
round on a real high. George had gone to the airport to pick up Tim and
Heidi and she wanted a word with Sarah. With all the other action, we had
completely forgotten about the homecoming and the planned party! I was
shooed out of the kitchen, `women talk' Gladys called it. Five minutes
later she was gone, Sarah came giggling into the lounge. Gladys had a
quandary, should she make up one bed or two? George had said `he's shagging
her in Sweden, whether they are in one bed or two, he'll be doing it here as
well', but Gladys needed a woman's – or at least a second – opinion!

"Just one, of course," Sarah had told her, but Gladys had decided to play
safe, and made up the double that had yet to see any action in Tim's room
and the single in their guest room. Anyway, the buffet lunch was planned
for two o'clock; it seemed that most of the neighbours would be there.
George was back soon after, according to Sarah who was peeping, Tim was more
smartly dressed than she had ever seen him and Heidi was a tall, slim blonde
with legs right up to her bum.

We were among the first to arrive for the party and to be introduced to
Heidi who kissed us both on both cheeks, I shook hands with Tim and offered
vague congratulations whilst ogling Heidi's pert bum and ample bosom.
George handed drinks around while Gladys fussed about with the food.

There wasn't a man among the twenty or so there who wouldn't have given his
hind teeth for a girl with Heidi's looks when he was Tim's age, a fact that
twenty or so jealous wives had not overlooked! The two new lovers were
eventually prised apart and I managed a quick word with Tim, "How's the kit
now?"

"Great," he said, "well tested and works fine, no problems at all in that
department!"

"Your mother was in a tizzy this morning about one bed or two. You Dad and
Sarah gave her the same advice but she still did her own thing. I should
put both bags in your room if I were you."

"Dad already has, but mother doesn't know yet! Between you and me, it's
Heidi's birthday next week and the engagement ring is in my pocket."

A couple of the neighbours collared me about the shooting but I merely
explained that the police car on the drive was used by a friend of mine who
has been pretty traumatised by it all and that he had stayed the night
because his wife was away and he didn't want to be alone. I noticed Sarah
was having a good talk with Heidi, something to catch up with later!

The party broke up about four o'clock by which time Heidi and Tim were
looking pretty tired. Sarah and I compared notes over a cup of tea when we
got home. Tim did well with his secondment and had been offered a full time
job in Sweden with the electronics company. Heidi was shortly to graduate
in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Stockholm University and hoped to
make a career in politics. Sarah was thrilled about the pending engagement,
immediately wondering where the wedding would be and worrying about the
problems of mixing and matching babies with politics. Heidi had noticed her
bump and said she wanted at least three children! I got a slap when I
reported that Tim's kit was now in top form so she should have no worries!
They were staying for two weeks so we should be seeing more of them.

"Unless they spend all the time in bed," earned me another slap so I grabbed
Sarah around the waist and gave her a long, hard kiss whilst rubbing my cock
against the bump!

We had an uneventful trip on Sunday, Alan was fascinated by his baby brother
but he had been hoping for a sister – a fact that David and Hannah had only
learned when Brian came home! He wanted to know everything about where the
baby had come from, how he got into mummy's belly, what daddy did towards it
and all the other little questions that three-year-olds were not too shy to
ask! Hannah and David were remarkably open with him; in my day, mother
would have `shushed' and quickly changed the subject. I was surprised to
learn that Daddy had put his pee-pee into Mummy's and then when Brian was
ready, he popped out!

Sarah was very motherly with Brian, happy to hold him, cooing to him and
generally admiring this tiny bundle of joy. My mother noticed the motherly
instincts, too; quite frankly, I was afraid of him, afraid I might squash
him if I held him too hard or drop him if I didn't! Mother said I would
soon be cured of that!

When we explained to Alan that Auntie Sarah and Auntie Alison were also
going to have babies, he wanted to know if Uncle Nick and Uncle Rob had
played `pee-pee', like the bull did! He wanted the babies to be boys as
well so that he had boy cousins to play with, girls were no fun! "In
another ten years or so, he will probably think otherwise," David said.

Mother seemed to have aged noticeably in the three months or so since we had
last seen her but that didn't stop her getting lunch for us all! However,
she showed little reluctance when Sarah and Hannah offered to clear up
afterwards and joined my father and me in the lounge for a good gossip.
Milwyn raised the subject of my lack of cousins and said how pleased he was
that both Rob and I were shortly to become fathers. Uncle John had
apparently been heartbroken when he discovered he would never sire any
offspring. It was going to be hard for Rob to keep our secret. Dilys
looked a bit uncomfortable but said nothing. She broke a long silence by
asking if we wanted a boy or a girl.

"Whichever comes along," Sarah replied, "we don't want to know until it pops
out!"

"Good for you," mother said, "I don't hold with it being no surprise." We
chatted about the farm, the weather and all sorts of other things for a
while until Hannah and Sarah emerged from the kitchen.

"Right, that's all cleared up, mother," Hannah announced as the joined us.
She and Sarah had obviously been talking babies. It seemed that Brian's
birth had been remarkably uncomplicated, `just like the cows and the sheep'
David had said! We talked for a while, had the piece of cake and cup of tea
about half past three before leaving for home around four o'clock, laden
with farmhouse goodies, as usual and planning to get onto the motorway
before the late autumn darkness fell.

On the way home, Sarah seemed a little pensive and I thought she was
worrying about the baby. Well, in a way she was, she was worried that
granny might not be able to cope with three new grandchildren, let alone
enjoy their growing up. "Who said anything about three," I said, "surely
there will be more that that!" If I hadn't been driving, I am sure I'd have
got a slap across the buttocks but then Sarah told me that Alison had told
her that mother was suffering from cancer but didn't want us to know until
her prognosis was determined, or even until the twins (as she called them!)
had arrived.

I was a bit taken aback that she had kept it secret but I suppose I
understood really. "Well, I said all good things come in threes so let's
hope the babies lead long, happy and healthy lives." Sarah didn't respond
but I fancy a tear was quietly shed. It had been a long and tiring day but
by the time we got home Sarah was back to normal. We had a hot drink and
organised our stuff for work next day before getting to bed about 10.30pm.
After some tentative kissing and cuddling we made love slowly and gently,
quietly slipping into a deep slumber almost as soon as it was over.

Next morning, we were up and about early. Sarah was filling the washing
machine and generally buzzing about while I had breakfast. When I was ready
to go to work, I got a long passionate kiss and was told not to be late
because she was having a day off. In truth, she was trying to run her work
down and this was one way of doing so. My day was actually pretty busy but
since it was nearly all good news, not too stressful.

Hubert, Jerry, Tom and Jill all called me during the day, each suggesting
fairly minor changes to my reorganisation plans and presentation, all of
which I took on board and emailed the updated copy to them before I left in
the afternoon. Jill also said she would discuss terms and conditions with
me on Wednesday and hopefully get my new contract approved at the Board
meeting on Friday, so I went home feeling truly elated.

The week flew by, I asked for and got some small changes to my `Terms and
Conditions', the only sticky point was how we would manage my initial
promotion vis-à-vis the corporate reorganisation, but that was readily
solved, though the salary question was still with HR. I was to go through
the motions of being promoted to Regional Manager and looking to move to
Newcastle but the move would be aborted when the reorganisation was be put
into effect in a month or so later. At that time I would be promoted again
as Divisional Director based in Birmingham. I would accompany Tom the
following week when the details were to be discussed with senior management
around the company.

Sarah and Alison had been regularly going for their prenatal check-ups,
classes, scans, examinations and all the other things that mothers-to-be
have to do and, of course, eagerly comparing notes! Thankfully, all was
completely normal with both of them and they looked pictures of health. I
had so far managed to go on most occasions with Sarah, fitting it in between
my work commitments, though she was quite happy to go alone whenever I was
not available. Our sex life continued to be very active, often the first
thing we did whenever I got home from a trip was to hit the sack! A very
significant moment as far as I was concerned was the first time we were
making love, our bellies together and me feeling the baby moving.
Obviously, we were going to have to be much more careful and less active as
we want certainly did not harm him. The baby was always referred to as `he'
although we had long since decided we didn't want to know its gender until
it popped out! The clinicians were under strict instructions not to tell
us, even if they knew!

I did a lot of travelling in the next couple of weeks, mostly to Newcastle
and Winchester, but occasionally some of the other TW outposts. I was very
surprised on one of my visits to Newcastle when Roger made an overt
proposition to me when we again met in the Gents just after lunch. I was
standing a couple of stalls down from him, when he said "You must be missing
the home comforts these days, Nick, what with the baby on the way and all
the travelling you are doing." He had stepped back from the urinal and was
elaborately shaking the non-existent last drops of water from his less than
flaccid penis.

He looked a rather shocked when I replied "You had better put that thing
away before somebody else walks in." He did so, then hurriedly rinsed his
hands and made a hasty exit without saying a word. He was as yet unaware
that I was shortly to become his boss; I had to stop this right now, but
how? I washed and dried my hands, taking longer than I needed, while I
tried to work out a strategy.

I decided that I had to walk straight to my office for a pretended telephone
call while I gave the problem more thought. His group was to be told about
my promotion later that afternoon; he would almost inevitably hear about it
on the grapevine before that meeting. I decided there was only one way; I
picked up the phone, and with no explanation, asked him to come to my office
for a minute. He was obviously rather apprehensive as he walked in. "Have
a seat," I said as calmly as I could, gesturing towards the empty chair in
front of my desk.

"Roger, I think you know why I have asked you to come in. I want to be very
clear. I am a happily married father-to-be and am not interested in any
kind of sexual relationship with anyone, male or female, in this office. Do
I make myself absolutely clear?"

"Yes, Nick, you do. I should not have made my suggestive approaches to you,
I am truly sorry."

"I am not going to take this any further and I am content to forget that you
ever made any approaches to me.

Please do not let it happen again, to me or anyone else here. Regardless of
their personal preferences or lifestyles I expect all my staff to maintain a
totally professional relationship with their colleagues."

Roger looked slightly puzzled, "I am saying this now because as you will
find out very shortly, I am to become the new Regional Manager, hence your
direct manager but please do not discuss that with anyone until you are all
told."

"Thank you, Nick, I shall respect your comments.

Tom arrived just as Roger was leaving the office, "Problems?"

"No, just a small matter, a misunderstanding, I think."

"OK, let's get on with it, where are we starting?"

"We'll go upstairs to Contracts, I think, we have to start somewhere!" That
way, Roger would be among the first to hear.

The news of my new role was communicated department by department, Tom
introducing it, ahead of my presentation, as given to the board. It was
generally well received, especially the emphasis on there being no
redundancies coming as it did shortly before Christmas.

I flew back to Birmingham that evening and was home before 7.30pm. As soon
as I walked into the house Sarah was enthusing about her latest scan which,
of course, I had missed. The technician had asked if she wanted to know the
baby's gender, "Absolutely not!" she said and the baby was henceforth
referred to as `the bump'. Everything was absolutely fine and the predicted
arrival date for our bundle of joy was February 27th – perilously close to
the 29th – 2004 being a Leap Year!
