Slow Growing Driving Fast Chapter 2 First Drive Solo

I sat in my car for a while and shook off my pity. I put the key in and
felt it rumble to life. The feeling was amazing. I was transported back in
time to what it must have felt like to whom ever first bought the car when
it was new.

In all respects with the exception of the metal my car was brand new. It
even had the smell of a new car. The leather seats even creaked under my
ass and the steering wheel did too in my twisting hands.

My eleven-year-old brother Allen came running out to my driver's
window. Allen and I look more like twins. He and I look to be the exact
same age as well. The fact is I think he idolizes me and I sure love the
little snot to death. "Where you going?" He asked as the rumble of my
engine almost muffled his small voice out.

"Allen!" My dad called. "Don't go asking for a ride."

I turned off my engine so my dad could hear. "He didn't ask for a ride dad,
but I kinda would like his company if he wants to go to the mall with me."

"Well that's up to you son." He responded.

"How about it kiddo? Want to go with me to the mall?"

It looked like he was about to wet his pants from the excitement. "Do I?"
Then he ran around to the passenger's door and got in.

My seat was customized just for me, but his was the stock seat that came
with the car when it was new, with the exception of the fine leather
upholstery of course.

(By the way you the reader should know that except for the modern safety
equipment that my parents insisted on. I not only worked on myself, but
also paid for out of my own job money. I do customizing on high-end
cars. You may not believe it, but I have been doing that since I was 14.)

"Put your seat belt on." I insisted and started the monster up again.

I did indulge myself just a little by driving up to the north end of Palm
Beach and back to the North Bridge over to West Palm.

(The north end of Palm Beach is a very calming drive and I would suggest
that anyone visiting the area take the time to drive it. Just watch out for
the cops because they are very strict.)

When we got to the mall on PGA Allen and I did some shopping and just for
kicks decided to get our hair cut and styled the same.

After we were hungry so decided to grab a bite at the food court. I gave
Allen a 20 and said. "Have whatever you want. I want a Philly."

I saw Allen struggle with the decision of what he wanted and settled in on
Pizza.

We met back up at a table and started to eat when Dave came up and
said. "Hey guys." Then he smiled and said. "Which one is John?"

"Are you serious?" I asked.

"Come on." He prodded. "Really are you John?"

"Sit down asshole." I said and he did. He also had a Philly on his
tray. "So, out for a spin?"

"No." He said. "I have a car, but it doesn't run yet."

"What's wrong with it?" I asked.

"I don't know." He said. "My uncle gave it to me. It has been sitting on
his farm for ages."

"What is it?" I asked.

"A 1987 GTA."

"Tell you what." I said. Let's eat and then we'll go take a look at it."

"You know mechanics?"

"Are you kidding?" My brother snorted soda out of his nose. John built his
own car."

"You did?" He asked astonished.

"I rebuilt it not built it." I corrected Allen.

"You should have seen it. There were car parts all over the garage for a
long time." Allen bragged. "It didn't look like there was a car in there at
all for a long ass time, but little by little there it was."

"Shut up and eat." I insisted. I turned to Dave and asked. "You come here
with someone?"

"No I live not far away."

"Well let's eat and take me to your car."

"Oh... It's not at my house." He said. "My mom doesn't want it blocking the
drive. It's at my uncle's."

"Where is that?"

"Orlando."

"Do you have a job?" I asked.

Ashamed he said. "No."

I grabbed up my cell phone and called home. When my sister Barbara answered
I said. "Barbara get dad."

"Hello?" Dad spoke.

"Dad, Remember Dave from when I got my drivers license?"

"Yeah?"

"Well his uncle gave him a car, but it doesn't run. Would it be ok if we
drove up to Orlando so I could see if I might be able to fix it?"

"You want to leave now?" He asked.

"No dad. We might have to spend the night up there so I should pick up a
few things and drop off Allen at home."

I could see the expression of disbelief in Dave's eyes as we talked.

"Oh please John let me go with." Allen begged.

"No sport." I reluctantly declined. "Besides mom don't trust my driving
that much yet."

"Boy you got that right." My dad mused. "She threw a fit after I told her
he was with you."

"Well, we'll be home in about 20 minutes." I said and hung up.

"Mom's mad you came with me." I said to Allen, but he just miffed.

We finished eating and went out to the parking lot at the Ruby Tuesday's
entrance. When we got to my car Dave was astonished. "This is your car?"

"Sure is." Allen boasted. "Isn't she a beauty?"

I watched with humble pride as he walked around the car running the backs
of his fingers along the paint. "She sure is." He hummed. "What's she got
under the hood?"

I unlatched the hood and pushed it up. Inside my pride and joy. "A 351 Boss
that I had blueprinted and built in Germany. It has been tested on the
autobahn in a Volvo and clocked at 201 miles per hour, but a Volvo is much
heavier than my car."

"Holy shit!" Was all he could muster for a response.

"Let's go." I said and closed the hood. Allen climbed in the back seat and
I once again insisted that everyone buckle up. When they did I started my
engine and just to show off a little I purged her just a touch. (Roar)

Dave laughed. "Oh man this car will kill you."

"Nah." I said. "I'm not so stupid to push her. Besides with the way I look
we'll be stopped all the way up there, so if you have any pot or anything
get rid of it before we go."

"I don't do that man." He said.

"Good."

Once again just in showing off when we were on the freeway entrance for PGA
and after we picked up a few things at Dave's house I gunned her just a
little to get up to speed. All of our heads were thrown back against the
seats as I brought her up to 60.

"Holy Fuck!" Dave laughed.

"Um Dave." I said. "I don't think my mom would appreciate that language
around Allen."

"Oh sorry." He said.

"We are allowed to swear." I said. "It's just that we all promised never to
say any swear words that start with F."

"Got-yah." Dave cued in.

When we reached the north bridge Dave spat. "You live in Palm Beach? Is
your mom a maid?"

"No." I answered. "My parents do well."

When we got to my house I reached up on the visor and pushed the button for
the gate.

"Man you live here?" He asked in astonishment.

I stopped the car just inside the gate and turned to look at him. "Look
yeah we do have money and yeah we live well, but I would give it all up in
a New York minute if I could look normal like you."

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"Look at me!" I almost yelled. "I'm a freak! My eleven-year-old brother and
I look like twins. Doesn't that tell you how I feel?"

"I'm sorry man." He said shyly. "I didn't mean to insult you."

"No I'm sorry." I calmed. "You didn't say anything wrong. I'm just touchy
and so damn jealous of you."

"Jealous of me?" He asked astonished.

I think my last comment must have stunned him beyond my understanding
because he piped down and stayed that way.

We went to my room and I packed a few things and then we went down to the
garage.

"Um you have to help me put the tools in the trunk." I said. "I can't lift
the toolbox by myself."

"Just open the trunk." He said and when I did I moved his bag out of the
way.

He hefted the box up and set it easily inside and I tossed in my duffle bag
of clothing.

My parents came out to say goodbye.

"Here." Dad said and handed me a credit card with my name on it. "This is
your college card and I want it back when you get home." Then he handed me
the condo key. "Don't trash the place."

"I won't." I responded.

It wasn't until we were back on the turnpike before Dave spoke
again. "Dude, Steven Goldhammer is your dad?"

"Oh don't start." I sneered. "My dad is just like any other dad."

"No he is not!" Dave said in pure anger this time. "I am a huge fan and
always have been. If you don't like it that's fine, but let me have my
fantasies!"

I was beginning to feel like a turtle with the way I was driving. I mean
the cars were passing me like I was standing still.

It had gotten dark and I decided that after we stopped at the oasis to eat
I would pick my speed up just a little because at night with my windows it
was hard to see inside my car.

We grabbed a quick hotdog and headed off again. There was a car full of
teenagers that saw us in the oasis and were now behind us.

They pulled up to my side door and were hyping and hollering at
us. "Fucking Queers!"

"What the hell is their problem?" I asked Dave.

"Probably the words you have painted on your trunk." He said.

"What's wrong with the words?" I asked.

"It's not the words dude it's the colors."

"The colors?"

"Yeah." He said. "Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple are the gay
flag colors. I thought you were gay too, but didn't ask."

All of a sudden they threw a cup full of sodas at my windshield and I had
had enough. I tossed her down a gear and pressed the gas to the floor
leaving them behind in my dust.

I watched the speedometer climb 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 and easing
off at 140.

"Dude!" Dave said while gritting his teeth and grasping on the to
dash. "Don't kill us."

"What a bunch of assholes!" I said, but as soon as I did there in my mirror
were those flashing blue lights. "Shit!" I jolted.

I tossed her down a gear then another and another trying to take it easy on
my brakes. Finally I came to a stop at the side of the road and waited and
waited for my ticket.

The cop came to the side window and I pressed the down button. "Yes I know
officer I was speeding, but I had a good reason."

He didn't look directly at me right away because he first looked around
inside my car and at Dave then he said. "Driver's license and registration
please sir." Then he said. "Yes I know."

"You do?"

"Yes I was having a conversation with my friend in the median and saw the
whole thing." As he wrote the ticket. "I'm going to look at this as
self-defense, but next time if you have a cell phone call 911."

"Yes sir I will. Thank you." I gasped in relief.

That's when he looked at me. "How old are you son?"

"16 sir." I said and handed him my wallet with my confirmation card.

"Please take it out of the wallet."

I reached in and pulled out my confirmation card that is signed by the
governor.

He looked at them a while and then looked at me and studied them
closely. "Ok well I guess." Then he said. "Goldhammer? Are you related
to?..."

"Yes sir, he's my father."

"Well I'll be damned." He said. "Can I have your autograph?"

"I'm not famous." I said.

"No sir." He smiled. "I need you to sign this warning ticket."

I laughed and said. "Sure."

Just after I signed it the kids who harassed us passed by. "Now if you'll
excuse me I have some kids to arrest." At that he took off with lights and
sirens blaring.

"Dude you scared the shit out of me!" Dave half-laughed and half-cried.

It was close to midnight when we got to Orlando and I was beat.
