Part 1
"Shit! Did ya puke on me again Joey?"
"Huh?"
"Ya did! Fuck Joey! Ya puked on me `gain! Why did ya puke on
me?"
"I'm sick again, Tony. I feel fuckin' awful." Joey's voice's
very low almos' like he's whisperin'.
The smell of vomit's fillin' my whole head. It totally wake me
up. Christ! I know Joey's sick again. What's wi' this fuckin' kid?
He sick more'n he well since comin' here. A nice kid and all and I
like him a lot all right but shit, him pukin' and bein' sick mos' a
the time's getting' real fuckin' annoyin'.
I'm thinkin' we should get `im t' a doc I s'pose, but who the
fuck has tha' kinda bread? I'm thinkin' `bout the money in my pocket
and I know I has less `n twenty dollar left. There's been nobody
comin' by t'day or yest'day `cause of the shitty weather and Joey
can't do nothin' anyways `cause he sick mos' a the time.
Shit! And it's fuckin' rainin' so hard again t'night! It's
pourin'! That's not suppose t' happen here in Phoenix. Is it? And
how the fuck am I gonna get me clean? How the fuck am I gonna get
Joey clean?
Maybe some kinda clinic? Yeah! Maybe we can find one. There
should be one aroun' somewheres. Gotta ask if there's one aroun'
here somewheres. I `memmer someone sayin' somethin' about a new free
clinic not too far away. I gotta get Joey there real soon.
Then I think about the Quix-Mart. It's always open. And it's
Friday and Zoe's on t'night - I think. I know she'll help if she
can. I know she will. Now, alls I gotta do is get Joey over there.
"C'mon, Joey. Get up! We gotta get ya t' the store and get ya
cleaned up."
Joey open his eyes a slit. "Wassa matter, Tony?" He's all
groggy and shit and don't seem t' know what's goin' on.
"Can't ya smell it? I tol' ya before. Ya puke again!"
"Shit, no!"
"Shit, yeah! Let's go see if we can get ya clean up. C'mon.
Get up!"
Joey's stugglin' t' get up, but he havin' a shitload a trouble.
Christ! I pull him up but he very, very wobbly. I look at his face
usin' my pocket flashlight and he don't look so good - he don't look
good at all. His eyes're all watery and his face look so rosy red.
He's also very hot - like he's burnin' up.
I grab mine and Joey's packs and roll up the sleepin' bag we
share. We start movin' to the street and out from unner the freeway.
It's really comin' down heavy and the wind's really kickin' up and
I'm afraid we's gonna get soaked.
I see a plastic bag layin' on the ground. I pick it up and rip
it open and try to cover mine and Joey's head. It cover us pretty
good and I begin walkin', but mostly I'm jus' holdin' up Joey and
sorta draggin' him and our shit and it ain't easy. The store's four
blocks away and I can see the sign blinkin' in front. I try keepin'
us close t' the buildins so we stay a little dry.
"Tony. Tony, I don't think I'm gonna make it all the way.
Really. I feel very...very sick."
"C'mon Joey! Ya gotta try! Try hard! Jus' a little way more."
He stop walkin' and turn his head away and start pukin' again.
The smell start getting t' me again. I don't think Joey has this
much in him. When he finish, I practically drag him and our stuff
the rest of way t' the store.
Sure enough, Zoe's workin' tonight. She's waitin' on a customer
as me and Joey go in. She give us a small wave and a smile. "What's
up guys?" she ask affer the customer go.
"Joey's sick again, Zoe. Can ya give us some help?"
"Sure. Panda's here t'night and I'm sure he'll help yas."
The two of us head for the back where the manager's office is.
Panda, one of the manager of this place, is there. He's a very nice
guy and him and his three brother own the store. They come from
India a few years ago and work real hard in this shitty area. They
make the store real nice and it seem t' do okay.
Panda's also nice t' us street kids - runaways and throwaways
and all. He say he's from a very poor place in India and he know
what it's like t' be alone and hungry and scart. We call him Panda
`cause he look somethin' like a panda bear and `cause we can't say
his real name, which is long and hard t' say. He's short and very
strong and's totally nice.
When he see Joey he jump outta the chair from behind his desk
and hurry over t' us. "What is wrong with this boy, Tony?"
"I dunno. We's sleepin' and when I wake up there's puke all
over us and he's feelin' real lousy again."
Panda feel his head. "I think he may have a high fever."
"Can ya do anythin' for him, Panda?" I'm real scart for Joey.
"The only thing I can do for Joey now is that I can give him a
couple of Tylenol and let him get some sleep. That's all I can think
of right now since it is so late. Tony, bring him inta the toilet
and lets get him clean then he can rest. And we have to get you
clean too."
I drag Joey outta the chair and int' the small bathroom nex' t'
Panda's office. Panda take a wad of paper towels and start cleanin'
the puke offa me and Joey then he spray us with some nice smellin'
spray and it take the stink away. Panda take Joey back t' the office
and I stay t' piss and wash up.
I take off my eye patch and wash my face and neck. As I'm
dryin' myself, I look int' the mirror and see again how awful my face
is with all the scars aroun' my eye and my real crooked broken nose
and all these new acne pimples. I wanna cry again, like I do every
time I see my face, but I don't cause there's things t' be done and I
gotta get back t' Joey and Panda.
When I go back t' the office Joey's on the rather ratty couch
behind Panda's desk. His coat's off and a blanket's over him. Zoe
come in t' see what's happenin. She shake her head when she see
Joey. He shiverin' unner the blanket and start cryin' again. Panda
take out some pills from his desk drawer.
Joey begin t' sob very hard when Panda try t' give him the
pills. He push Panda's hand away, the one holdin' the pills and
shake his head and begin t' cry even louder.
"Zoe, get me a bottle of children's Tylenol from the shelf,
please."
Zoe do as Panda ask and come back wi' the bottle and a plastic
spoon. Panda give Joey some on a spoon and make him lay down on the
sofa. Joey's moanin' and rollin' around a little and still shakin'.
Panda's rubbin' his head and I jus' walkin' around not knowin' what
to do. Panda's also watchin' the TV sets on his desk. They show
pitchas of the store and what's happenin' all over it.
Joey's quietin' down some and sippin' some Gatorade and then
suddenly Panda jump up from his chair. He go outta the office t' go
int' the store part. I'm sittin' next t' Joey and he look like he's
fallin' asleep. Then Panda come back t' the office with another man.
This other guy look rather old, dress very nice and carryin' a
leather case with him. The two of `em walk t' the back of the office
and're whisperin' together. I can't hear what they's sayin' but I
keep lookin' at `em and wonderin' who this guy is.
Then Panda walk over t' me wi' the other guy right behin' him.
"Tony, this gentleman is Dr. Valenz. I have known the good doctor
for a few years and he is a very, very fine man. I told him about
Joey being sick and he want to look at him and see if he can help
him. Is that all right?"
I look up at the man and don't do nothin'.
"Tony, Dr. Valenz run a free clinic for poor people on the south
side of the city," Panda say. "He's a very good man and a wonderful
doctor."
I nod my head slowly and move away from Joey. The doc move over
t' him and take some things outta his case. Panda help him t' take
some of Joey's clothes off and then the doctor begin to look him all
over. He take more things outta his case that ya always see doctors
use. Joey's eyes are close and he seem totally outta it.
Then the doc look up and smile at me. "Hi, Tony," he say. He
seem t' have a very nice lookin' face and a nice smile. He seem t'
be okay. "I'm Jaime Valenz. How you doing tonight?" The docs
speak kinda funny like he's not a American.
"Fine," I say.
"That's good. Tell me, Tony, how long's Joey here been sick?"
"He start about two days ago. But..." I stop myself from sayin'
more.
He look at me very serious. "What else were you going to say,
Tony?"
I don't say nothin'. I don't want t' say nothin' more about
Joey in case this here doc work with the cops and the social workers
and theyl take me and Joey away some place and I never see him again.
"Please, Tony. I need you to answer a few question about Joey's
health." He smile at me again. "Okay?"
I nod my head. "Yeah," I say sorta in a whisper and lookin' at
the floor.
"That's good, Tony. Thanks. Now, you say that Joey's been sick
for two days?" I nod. "Has he been vomiting?" I nod again. "Did
he eat anything...or drink anything?"
"He eat nothin' that I know and drink some Coke."
"Has he been sick before?"
"Yeah. He sick a lotta time.almos' every week."
The doc thank me then look in Joey's ears, mouth, take his temp,
feel around his neck and chest and tummy. He take off any clothes
Joey's wearin' above his waist and roll him ont' his tummy. I can
see how dirty Joey's body is and I know mine's the same.
The doc he put that thing in his ears and listen t' Joey
breathin'. He bang on Joey's back and jus' before rollin' him over
again he pick up Joey's stumpy arm and rub it and look at it close.
It's dirty and look pretty gross t' me.
Joey's eyes are open now and he's lookin' at the doc. There's a
knock on the door and a very pretty lady walk in. She's wearin' a
beaut'ful dress and pretty jewelry and lotsa makeup. She begin
speakin' to the doc and I can't unnerstand `em. At first I think
it's Spanish but I unnerstands Spanish and it ain't Spanish. I
sometime think I unnerstand some of what they say but I don't.
The man then look right at Joey who's watching him and the lady.
The doc smile and Joey try to smile too. "You're a sick little guy,
aren't ya Joey?" Joey nod. The doc turn t' me and Panda. "Well,
I'd say Joey has a very bad flu and he's a little dehydrate. He'll
need bed rest for four or five days and then he should be fine." The
doc rub Joey's greasy hair and then his stumpy arm again. "Tell me,
Joey, how did you lose your arm?"
"I'm...I'm born this way." It's the first time Joey talk since we
come here.
"I see," say the doc. He stand up and speak to the lady again.
Maybe she's his wife or somethin'. They both look at Joey, then at
me, then she nod.
He come over and speak to me. "Tony, Joey need medical
attention. He's quite sick, but it's nothing very serious. Bed rest
and plenty of liquids should take care of it. But the weather's so
terrible - all this awful rain and wind. I speak to my wife and we
think it would be best if you two boys could come wit' us - you know,
stay with us for a while and let us take care of the both of you.
Stay at our house - until Joey's better. Wouldn't that be nice? Is
that all right with you guys?"
I don't know what t' say. It really stun me `cause nobody's
ever ask me or Joey t' stay wi' `em. "Ya mean...really? Stay at ya
house?" The doc and the lady both nod. "Ya not shi - uh, sorry -
ya not tryin' t' fool me and Joey are ya?"
Now the lady speak - the first time I hear her voice. She speak
very soft - it's a nice voice and she's not American too. "No Tony,
we're not trying to fool you." She walk closer to me and touch my
cheek with her hand and she seem t' be lookin' right at my eye patch.
"We would really like for you two boys to stay wit' us for a time.
Let Joey get better and get stronger. And I think you'll really like
our house."
I go over t' where Joey's on the sofa. As I walk t' him I look
at Panda and he's smilin' at me. I sit down next to Joey. He's
starin' at me. "Did ya hear `em, Joey?" He nod his head a little.
"Would ya like t' go with the doc and his wife, Joey?" I say in a
whisper.
He nod his head a little and speakin' in a very low voice.
"Yeah. I think it better. Don't ya?" He's also speakin' very slow.
"It jus' so shitty outside...all rainy and windy and such...and I
feel so real awful Tony."
I pat his chest and give him a little smile. I look at the doc
and his wife; he's standin' and they holdin' hands. They both
smilin' at us. I see the lady's taller `n the doc. "Okay," I say
quiet. "Okay. That would be very nice. Thank ya both very much.
Thanks a lot."
The lady walk up to me and kiss me on both cheeks. "Wonderful!"
She's smilin' a lot. "Do you need to get any of your belongings?"
I shake my head. "Nah. We got our `portant stuff wit' us. An'
we can leave the rest." I look at her for a minute. "Excuse me,
missus, but what's your name?"
"I am Helena. Please call me that."
"That's a pretty name. And ya are so pretty too." She smile at
me again. "Where -I hope ya don't mind me askin' - but where's ya
takin' us?"
The doc speak. "We've a very lovely home in the hills outside
the city and near the desert. I think you both'll be very
comfortable there while Joey get better and stronger."
"And then ya'll bring us back here? When Joey all better, I
mean."
"If that's what you want Tony, we'll bring you back here when
Joey's all better."
He look at the lady again and then at me. I know I'm feelin'
rather bad when he say he be bringin' us back t' here. I know I
don't want t' live unner the freeway no more. And I know Joey don't
neither. I look at poor Joey layin' on that sofa and his eyes look
like they beggin' with me.
Then the doc speak again. "Of course.if you don't wanna come
back...maybe...well, maybe we can find a way for you and Joey to
stay with us...you know, longer, I mean."
I get a little excited when he say this. "Do ya really mean
it?" I ask.
Now the lady speak. "Of course we mean it, Tony." She come
near t' me again and rub her hand over my cheek again. I see that
her hands are big but they's very soft. "We wouldn't say it if we
didn't mean it. If you like...if you're happy at our house...you
and Joey...and with us...and we're happy that you're with
us...well, then, maybe, you can stay longer if you want. Okay?"
I nod my head and she rub the side of my head and touch my
eye patch with one'a her finger and I jump back a little. "But
that's for later. Now we have to bring both you boys wit' us to
the house. Okay?"
I look at Joey again. He's smilin'. And I'm feelin' pretty
good myself. The lady's hand's still on my cheek. I push my face
int' her hand. She smile at me and rub her thumb on my cheek.
"Yeah, that'd be great," I say and then the lady put her arms
round me an' give me a small hug. I feel tears are comin' t' my eye
`cause nobody's hug me like this since I can't rememmer. She then
give me a little kiss on my cheek and I'm feelin' very uncomfable
cause I know my cheek's dirty and my whole face's dirty. But she
don't seem t' care.
I see tha' the doc's smilin' too. He go over and talks t'
Panda. Panda's also smilin'. Ever'body seem happy. Even Joey.
Panda and the doc shake hands and then the doc take some money outta
his pocket and give it t' Panda. Then he walk over and help Joey get
his clothes on again. The doc lift Joey and carry him out t' the
car. The car's real, real big. The lady and Joey get in the back
seat of the car and I get int' the front. The doc put my bag and
Joey's bag int' the trunk.
Before he start up the car he take out a phone and call someone.
The person he speak to must also unnerstand that language he speak.
I hear him and I know it's ain't Spanish `cause I unnerstand Spanish
and he ain't speakin' it. We drive off afta he finish speakin'.
He put his hand on my knee and he start talkin' t' me. "Are you
okay, Tony?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." I look at him and he smile at me and turn to
look at the lady and Joey in the back seat. He turn the radio on.
It play some stuff I don't know. "What's that ya speakin' on the
phone?"
"That? The language?" I nod. "Oh, that was Portgese. We're
from Brazil. Portgese is the language of Brazil."
Okay. So, that's what it is. "Are ya Americans?"
"What?" he say.
"Are ya American?" I say again.
"Yes, both Helena and I are American citizens."
"How far ya live?"
"About twenty minutes away. Are you hungry?" I nod.
We get on the freeway. The car's big and it's goin' very fast
and it's very quiet and smooth. He look at me quickly and with the
light from the dash I can see he's smilin'.
Then the lady speak. "How old are you, Tony?" she ask.
I don't answer her. I don't know if I want t' be givin' out
this kinda stuff jus' yet. I mean, I don't know who these people
are, do I? I think again what I think in the Quix-Mart, about why
they want us t' go wi' `em. "Why they takin' home two dirty, smelly,
ugly street kids? What they doin' this for? What they wantin' from
us? Two cripple kids? I mean one kid's half blind and the other kid
ain't got but one arm? We ain't the kinda kids people - nice people
- people who have a big car and live in a big house - want around,
are we?"
"Tony, did you hear me?"
"Yes, missus. I hear ya." Okay. They's takin' us home with
`em and they're gonna be takin' care of Joey and his sickness. It's
a okay question, I suppose. I figure they should know somethin'
about us. Right? "I'm thirteen, missus. Was thirteen last month."
"Thank you, Tony," she say in a nice voice.
"An' I'm ten," Joey say in a low voice. He's sittin' real close
t' the lady and sippin' from a bottle of Gatorade they buy him. She
pat Joey's head. The doc say he need t' get plenty t' drink. They
also got me some an' I'm drinkin' too.
Afta we drive on the freeway a ways, the doc turn off, and afta
about five minutes he's headin' up int' the hills. I'm lookin' hard
at what's outside the winda, but I ain't seein' much. The doc turn
the car int' another road and we get t' a big gate. He press a
button on the dash and the gate in fronta us begin t' open up. He
drive through and go up this really curvy and long drive.
All of a sudden these lights come on all around us and I see a
great big house that look like it's made all of glass. It look
beautiful! Like pitchas I once seen of ice palaces. It sparkle so
much and there's beautiful plants all around.
I look in the back and Joey's starin' at the place and his
mouth's open. "O-o-o-o-o," he say in a little whisper.
"Yeah!" I say.
The doc is already outta the car and I open my door and get out
and the doc help the lady open her door and then he reaches in and
grabs holda Joey. The doc carry Joey up the steps to the door which
open. A man come out with a `brella and help the doc. We all go in.
They speak and it's that Portgese again.
"Tony, this is Silvano," the doc say. "He work here. Silvano,
this is Tony and this is Joey." The man smile at us and he take Joey
from the doc. He turn away while he's carryin' Joey and he's
disappearin' through a door.
"Wait!" I yell. "Wait! Where ya goin' wi' Joey? I wanna go
too!"
"Tony," the lady say softly with her hand on my shoulder.
"You'll see Joey in a few minutes. Silvano is taking him to his
room. And you are going to eat something now in the kitchen. Then
you take a bath and go to bed."
"Yeah, but when'll I see Joey again?"
"You'll see him afta you eat. Okay?"
"Yeah, I suppose." I'm not happy about this but I go with the
lady while the doc follow where the other guy go.
We walk down a hall and I see beautiful pitchas on the walls and
beautiful furniture and I can see the lights of a hundred buildins
through the great big glass walls. We turn and go int' a kitchen
that's about the most `credible I ever seen. Everthin' is in white
and there's pots hangin' from the ceiling and all. Jus'
unbeliev'ble!
There's a old lady standin' by a eatin' table and she smile at
me a very little. She get somethin' outta the oven and put it on a
plate.
"Tony, this is our cook and housekeeper. Her name is Colomba."
I see that there's a place set at the table and the cook lady put a
plate of food down and also a glass of water and some crusty lookin'
bread. "Please sit down and eat," she say. "I know you must be very
hungry."
I taste the food - it's like some kinda stew with meat and beans
and vegetables and it taste wunnerful and make me all warm inside.
And I'm so hungry. I take bread and dip it in and start t eat fast.
The stuff taste very, very good. I feel happy and I smile up at both
ladies.
Helena leave afta I start t' eat but the other lady stay. She
jus' standin' by the sink wi' her arms folded across her chest. And
she watchin' me eat. She watchin' very close. She stare at me and
it make me very nervy and scart and I get t' thinkin' she don't like
really me.
When I finish eatin', and I'm feelin' full and gettin' sleepy
this old lady - Columba, I think that's what the lady say her name is
- ask me to follow her. We walk through some other beautiful rooms,
then up some stairs and there a whole lotta other rooms here and they
all look like bedrooms and such. She take me into one of `em and I
see Joey sleepin' in the middle of a big bed. He look very comfy and
he seem to have a little smile on his face. He also look a lot
cleaner than he did a while ago.
"He sleep now. Ya see ya friend again in d' mornin'."
"Thanks. I know he's very tired and also sick."
She close the door t' Joey's room and we walk down the hall
again. Every now and then, I get a quick look of the lights of the
city through one of the windas and it look awesome. She lead me int'
another bedroom and the doc's wife's here. She sittin' on the bed
and movin' some clothes that layin' on the bed. They look like
clothes that'd fit a kid, a kid my age, but I'm not sure.
She look up and smile at me. I smile back at her. "Hi Tony,"
she say. She ain't wearin' her pretty dress anymore, jus' a pretty
red robe.
"Hi."
"Did you like the food Colomba cooked?"
"Yeah! It's great! I eat it all up."
"Wonderful! Would you like to take a bath now.and then go to
sleep in this bed?" I nod my head again. She stand up and put out
her hand. I reach out with my hand and she take it. "Thank you,
Columba." The old lady say somethin' and leave. She close the door
t' the bedroom. For some reason I don't know I think the two lady's
fightin' wit' each other. I'm sure the old lay don't like me cause I
think I can unnerstand some of the words she say.
The doc's wife take me int' the bathroom next t' the bedroom.
It's so huge I can't believe it jus' a bathroom. There two toilets,
a huge bathtub, a big shower, two sinks and in the middle is another
huge tub! I stop dead in my tracks and I can feel the lady tuggin'
on my arm.
"Like it Tony?"
"It's incred'ble. It really is! The mos' beautiful bathroom I
ever seen!" I sudden can't rememmer her name again. So much's
happenin' t'night that my brain ain't takin' it all in.
"I'm glad you like it `cause it'll be your bathroom and that
bedroom in there'll be your bedroom as long as you stay here. Is
that all right?"
I can't believe what's she sayin'. I jus' stare at her. I nod
m' head slow and I can feel tears comin' to my eye. She sit down on
a beautiful bench in the bathroom and open her arms and I walk t' her
and she hug me and I put my head down on her shoulder and I start t'
cry hard. She hug me. She don't seem t' care how much I stink or
how much my clothes smell. She hug me tight and I'm lovin' the
huggin'. I feel so good.
"Let me start fillin' the tub," she say and I move away from her
and she go over t' the big tub and begin fillin' it with hot water.
The water come outta three diff'ent openins. One's even like a small
waterfalls.
"Now, let me get you undressed," she say t' me.
When she say this I'm a little upset `cause I'm not naked in
fronta any lady that I can rememmer before. I figure I been naked in
fronta a lady when I'm a tiny baby but nothing like now and I can't
rememmer that long ago.
I jus' stare at her. I think my mouth open. I can't believe I
hear her say tha' she want t' undress me. Why? Why do she want t'
undress me for? She like my body? She like boys like me? Don't she
think I can do it myself? Is she gonna make fun of me? Laugh at my
very skinny chest with all my ribs showin' and my stick legs and my
ugly arms with no muscles at all, and most of all my small and ugly
prick and balls?
"W-w-w-why?" I ask.
"Why? Do you really want to get into the tub with all your
clothes on? I know they need washin', but that's a little too much,
don't you think? Now please come here, Tony, and lets get you
undressed."
"What the hell?" I think. "It's her house. She do wha' she
want anyways."
"Okay," I say very soft. I walk slow up to her and I stand in
front of her.
"That's a good boy!" she say.
The water comin' int' the tub's makin' lotsa noise. She
unbutton my shirt and throw it in the corner. She pull the ratty tee
shirt I'm wearin' over my head and throw that in the corner too.
Since the bathroom floor's really, really white, I see tha' m' tee is
real gray and real grungy lookin'. When I look back at the lady
she's lookin' at my chest and body. I've a lotta scratches and
scrapes and also some scars on me and she touch one or two of `em.
"Does this hurt, Tony?"
I shake my head. She touch more and more of `em and then she
turn me around so she can see my back. She touch some of the sores
on the back (I ain't never seen `em) and she press on my back. I
feel some pain and let out a little yell.
She stand up and go outta the room and then come back quickly
and she carryin' a black bag that look like a doctor bag. She open
it and take out some stuff `cludin' that thing that listen to ya
chest. She put it on and tell me to take deep breaths and then to
take a deep breath and hold it. And all the time she listenin' t'
me. Then she tell me t' cough and I do and she get a sad `pression
on her face.
"Wassa matter with me missus?" I ask in a very scart voice.
"Tony, I asked you to please call me Helena. Okay?"
"Yeah.but I don't like callin' people, ya know, by their firs'
name and all, `specially if I don't know `em and they older."
"But you know me Tony, don't you?" I nod my head. "So what's
the problem?" I shrug my shoulders. "See? No problem." I jus'
look at her.
"Are ya a doctor"?"
"Yes I am, Tony. Both my husband and I are doctors."
"Am I okay?"
She jus' look a' me for a second. "You may have some
respiratory, that is, breathing problems and possibly some other
things, too." She touch a big bruise on my arm. "Does it hurt when
you breathe deeply?"
I nod a little. "Tell me Tony, how'd you get these bruises and
cuts and scars?"
I don't say nothin'. "I really need to know, son."
I stay quiet. "Okay. Maybe you can think about it and tell me
when you're ready. Is that all right?"
I nod.
When she call me "son" I start to get tears in my eye again. Is
she really thinkin' of me as her son? I get a warm feelin' and start
to cry. She put her arms around me and hold me close. I can smell
her perfume. It feel so good how she hold me - ya know, like no one
hold me in such a long time. Like someone really care `bout me for
the firs' time in a long time, someone beside my lovin' Joey.
"Enough talking," she say. "C'mon. Let me get you into the
tub. We need to clean you up."
I sit down and she take off my sneaks, socks, jeans and ratty
unnerwear. I'm so `barrass `cause my clothes are so awful and dirty
and `cause I look so terrible - thin and ugly. There mirrors in that
bathroom that I can't help seein' myself and I see how horrible I
look. I'm really terrible lookin' like a ugly, dirty stick. I jus'
hate what I see and I quick look away from the mirror.
Then she go t' take off my eye patch. When she reach for it I
get up quick and step away from her.
"Why ya doin' tha' for?" I ask in a very loud voice. Wi' all
the tile in that bathroom, my voice boom around and I see that she
look a little `fraid.
"Tony, please, you cannot take a proper bath while you're
wearing that patch." She sound like she getting' a little upset wi'
me. "Now please come here and let me take it off and we'll get you
into the tub."
I shake my head and start movin' quick outta the bathroom. She
follow me. I flop on the bed `fore I realize that I'm completely
naked. I lay down on my stomach and start cryin' again hidin' m'
face in m' hands. Then I feel her hand on my back and she rub it
very light. It feel nice.
"Tony, there's nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing! Please
believe me. We all have certain.well, we all have certain
problems.all of us do.and they shouldn't be hidden.hidden from people
who like us. Right?"
I lift my head up and look at her and I don't know what t' say.
She's jus' starin' at me and she look so sad and also so kind. I
know that I'm feelin' very sad and feelin' all mix up.
I cry hard now. And I talk and sob so hard at the same time.
"I...I have only one eye, Helena. One fuc - uh - sorry, one lousy eye.
And it don't see so good. I'm a freak, Helena. A boy freak!
And...and...and I'm ugly...and...my body's all scarred up and
cut up and...and...I'm so thin and...and my feet turn in bad...and
my n-n-nose's broke...and...and all these terrible pimples I got...and
my sex stuff's small and all and...and I don't hear so good
neither...and I'm so...so totally horrid...and I'm stupid...and I
ain't speakin' proper and...and..."
I'm cryin' so very hard now. Then I sit up. Helena open out
her arms t' me and I move real close t' her snuggle real close t' her
and she hold me. She hold my smelly body and still don't seem t'
care.
"I understand what you're tryin' t' say, Tony."
She hold me and rock me slow back and forth. It feel so good
and her arms around me feel so good. She hummin' quiet and I like
that. Then she speak quiet. "I understand, Tony. I really do. But
there's no need to say those terrible, terrible things about
yourself. I don't think you're ugly or a freak or any of those
things you say. Yes, you have some problems. Everyone has problems.
Well, we all do. That's no reason to talk about yourself so bad.
And you should know, we can help most of those problems you talk
about."
"Y-y-y-you can?"
"Yes we can. For sure."
I'm still cryin' and gettin' her robe all wet. She reach for
some tissues from a box nex' t' the bed. She still holdin' me and
rockin' me so gentle. She wipe my face and I blow my nose. It hurts
when she touch it.
"And I don't think you're ugly at all. Not at all! I think
you're a very nice looking, very pleasant young man who has a very
hard life and need some love and attention in his life now and some
thing t' make him happy."
She rock me some more and sing a song and it's in Portgese. I
feel so comfable resting my head on her shoulder. It make me feel
much better.
"I'd really like to get to know you so much better and I hope we
can become very good friends." She pulls a little away from me and
look at me and give me a big smile. "And Jaime and I hope to make
you happy here. Both you and Joey."
"Don't this horrible patch and my one eye make me very ugly?"
She smile again and it's sucha pretty smile. "No. I think you
look rather dashin' and excitin'. And a little mysterious. Like a
spy." We both laugh a little, but I'm still cryin' some.
I think that what she say. I know she must be jokin' when she
say that but I like t' hear it. "Joey's got one arm and I got one
eye. The other kids call us The Crip Twins. It hurt me a lot when
they say that and I know it hurt Joey too." I look at her face and
it look so nice and I don't know why I do it but I begin t' take my
eye patch off and when it's off I drop it on the bed. "Maybe that
why me and Joey are such good friends and why I love him so much."
She's still smilin' at me and lookin' at me and then she move
her hand up t' my face and is strokin' my cheek so soft near my empty
eye.
"The scars are terrible, ain't they?"
"Yes, there's lots of scarring. And there's much damage to the
area around the eye socket." She's still strokin' my cheek and I'm
feelin' much better as she look close at me. "And your nose been
broke. Right?"
I nod.
She seem very sad. "How did you lose your eye?"
I shrug. "Dunno. As long as I can rememmer I have only one eye
and wear a patch over the empty eye. I can rememmer once somebody
sayin' my pop poke my eye out when he's high on drugs, but I don't
know. I once seen pitchas of me when I was small and I have a eye
patch and I'm about two."
She touch my nose with her fingers. "Ouch!" I yell.
"I'm so sorry, Tony. I'm very sorry I hurt you."
"That's okay. I know ya only tryin' t' help."
"It's been broken a few times, I notice. When's the las' time?"
she ask.
I shrug again. "About a month ago? I think. I trip an' I fall
down hard." I'm still lookin' at her. Her face seem so kind and
like she really care f' me. "No. That ain't true. Some big kid hit
me."
"I see."
"It bleed f' a coupla days an' hurt a lot. Joey take care a
me."
She continue t' rub her thumb over the skin near my empty
eyehole. She get up and take a light outta her bag and shine it on
my empty eye. She feel all around it. She's look serious but I like
the feel of her touch on me.
"The eye's sewed closed," she say quiet. She touch it all over
some more. And then she kiss my empty eye. It's so strange but I
like what she do a lot and I can feel her soft lips on my dead
eyelid.
She then take the light and look int' my good eye and my ears
and then up int' my nose. It hurt like hell in my nose but I don't
say nothin'. Then she smile at me and say, "Hey! Let's get back t'
the bathroom and take that bath. Okay?"
"Yeah!" I say. "Let's do it!"
We get up off the bed and walk back t' the bathroom. She put
her hand on my shoulder as we walk together.
Helena help me int' the tub. It's so big I think I can swim in
it. The water's very warm but not too hot. It feel good on my body
but some of my scratches and sores begin t' hurt and I tell Helena.
She tell me that she'll be careful and afta the bath she'll put some
stuff on `em and make `em feel better.
She take shampoo and wash my hair and with her fingers she rub
my head. It feel good and I know that I begin to feel real comf'able
a lot. Then she take somethin' that look like a telephone on a hose
and water come out and she rinse m' head. It feel so good. She's
careful not t' get soap near my missin' eye. Then she shampoo my
hair again.
She take a cloth and put some nice smellin' soap on it and wash
my face and shoulder and chest and back and unner my arms and my arms
and hands. I lift my legs and she gently wash them sayin' that she
tryin' not to disturb any scab on my skin. She tell me t' stand up
and I do and she wash the rest of me includin' my butt and crack and
over my prick and balls.
I'm always `barrass when anyone see my boy sex parts - my ugly
and small prick and balls. They really so small and I'm thirteen
already. I know everybody's prick's bigger `n mine. She wash me
very careful and I like it a lot when I feel her hand goin' over my
prick and balls. But I look away when she is doin' this `cause I'm
so `barress and I know she think I'm a boy freak with tiny little boy
stuff. I got a uncut little button prick and little balls and a real
small bag. They all look so freaky.
She peel back my long foreskin and wash unner it and it feel so
very good. Almos' as good as when someone's blowin' me and they move
it back so's t' get t' my prick head.
Afta she finish washin' it she say, "You have a attractive
penis, Tony." I almos' giggle when she say "penis" `cause it sound so
much like grown ups that I meet say. I meet a lotta people who call
it a "penis" or a "memmer" and I think that's so funny when they say
it.
"Huh? I do?"
"You do."
"Ain't it too tiny? Ya know, like a little button. My prick
and balls.they so small.and ugly."
"No! Not at all! They're really very nice and a good size for
a boy your age." She look at me. "Are you embarrass by `em.by the
size?"
I nod.
"Well, you shouldn't be; not at all. You know, you're enterin'
puberty and so many changes'll be happenin' to your body in the next
few year." She still lookin' at me hard. "Do you know what puberty
is Tony?"
"Yeah." I think abou' wha' the guys say about it, like ya prick
and balls get real big, and ya get hairy all over ya body and can
make babies. "But...but it jus' what the oller guys say." I look at
her. "Coul' ya tell me, Helena?"
"Defin'ly. Puberty is when men and woman mature and can produce
babies when they have sex together. For a man - like you - you'll
start t' get tall, your voice'll get deep, your genitals'll grow -
your penis and your testicles." I look at her with a expression on
my face. "You know, testicles - your balls." I smile at her and I
know my face get red. "And you'll start getting hair on your body
particularly on your legs, in your crotch and unner your arms and
also on your face so that you'll begin to shave. And your sperm -
you know, your cum - will be able to make babies when you have sex
with a woman."
"Really?"
"Really! All this will happen t' you. And pretty soon now.
You're goin' through a tough time now but I'll bet you're goin' t' be
a very handsome young man, Tony. Very handsome. I'm sure of it.
You have so many fine features..."
"Even with one eye?" And a smash up nose? And lotsa pimples?"
I say lookin' away from her.
"...and beautiful blonde hair and a wonderful smile and a very
nice slim body. Yes, you're gonna be a real handsome guy.
"But wha' abou' my one eye?"
"You're handsome even with your one eye, Tony, and your crooked
nose.and that acne. But I wouldn't worry about them too much. There
are lotsa things we can do t' help you."
I look at her not knowing what she mean or why she say that. "I
got a tiny bit of hair around my...uh...around my...uh...penis already."
"I notice."
"And I...I can shoot already. I mean I can...you know, cum."
She smiles. "I think that when I see you."
I give her a big smile. Then she use that hose thing again and
she wash all the soap offa me. "I think that should do it for now.
Let me get some towels and we'll dry you off."
She get up from sittin' on a rollin' stool and get two very big
towels outta the cabinet. She put one over my head and begin to rub
it and she put one around my shoulders and begin t' pat me dry. It
feel so great as she gently touch me all over. I think my dick start
gettin' a little big `cause of all her touchin' and feelin' around my
body.
She then make me sit on the stool and take a bottle of some
kinda lotion from the cabinet, put some on her hand and rub it on me.
"Wass that stuff?" I ask.
She smile at me and continue t' rub that stuff on me. "It's a
medicated lotion we use in the hospital to help heal skin sores. I
think you need it. Don't you?"
"Yeah, I guess. It smell okay, I s'ppose."
"I'm glad you like it." She continue t' rub it all over me - on
my neck, on my shoulders, on my chest, and back, and feet and legs.
Then she tell me to stand up which I do. She rub that lotion all
over my butt and then she move her hand until she's movin' it over my
prick and balls. Now I really think that my dick's growin'. "You
like this Tony?" she ask in a very low voice almos' a whisper.
I nod my head again and again. My prick's really almost
stickin' straight out. I'm really `barrass and don't know what t'
do. I can feel that my whole face's hot and red and I see in the
mirror. It's all red! But I for real like the feelin' I'm getting'
from the lady doc playin' wi' my boy sex parts an' rubbin' them.
Then she put her mouth t' my ear. "There's nothing t' be upset
about, Tony. I'm only trying t' do things t' help you and t' get
your body t' heal properly. That's all. So please don't be
embarrass. Okay?"
I swallow hard. "Okay, missus - er - Helena." She smile at me
and I smile back at her.
She rub and rub all over `til she finish and my whole body's
shinin' and feelin' wunnerful. "Great!' she say. "Now let's go back
to your bedroom."
I'm surprised at what she say, "My bedroom?"
"Yes, of course. As I say before, this's your bedroom.your room
as long as you stay here. That all right with you?"
I don't know what t' say - I'm so shock when she say that. So
all I do's nod my head and say, "Uh-huh."
When we get int' my bedroom I notice again the clothes on the
bed. Mainly unnerwear but there other stuff also like jeans and
socks and tee shirts. "Pick out what you want t' wear tonight and
what fits, Tony," she say.
I look over the stuff and it all look so new. I pick up briefs
and a athletic shirt and put `em on. I also pick up my eye patch and
start t' put it back on.
"Please don't put that on, Tony."
"Huh? Why?"
"Because I have a new, clean one for you." She go to a drawer
and take out a eye patch and give it to me. It black like my old one
but made better.
"Do ya have a supply of `em?"
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I do." We both laugh. "You have a
lovely laugh, Tony."
"Thanks," I say. I know I'm startin t' really like this lady -
this lady doctor.
I put on the clean eye patch and it comf'able. Helena pick up
the other clothes stuff and put `em in a drawer near the bed then
come over t' me and put her hands on the sides of my head and strokes
the skin softly again and then even stokes the eye patch.
I look around the room `cause before I don't have time t' see
the whole thin'. There's a big TV and a stereo and beautiful
furniture and the walls are painted a very light blue color. It's
very beautiful wi' pretty lamps and very nice wood floors and a thick
rug on the floor. There's even a computer.
I look int' a mirror on the wall and I think maybe the lady
doc's right. Maybe I don't look so ugly even wi' the eye patch. Now
that I'm clean and wearin' clean unnerwear. I think maybe I even
look pretty good.
"Are you ready for sleep?" she ask me.
"Yeah, I think so." I get int' the bed and it's so comfy that I
think I'm gonna go t' sleep that second and I'll sleep forever. She
hold me a little and again it's so wunnerful and it make me so glad.
"Ya very pretty, " I say t' her.
"Thank you, Tony. That's very nice of you to say."
"And thanks again for bringin' me and Joey here t' ya house and
f' takin' good care of Joey when he sick."
She kisses me on both cheeks and hug me tight. "We're happy
that you and Joey are here with us."
Then there's a knock on the door and the doctor come in. He's
carryin' a tray and I see a glass of milk on it. He put it on a
small table near the bed. There's a samwich on it and some cookies
and the glass of milk. "Jus' a bedtime snack, Tony."
He sit on the side of the bed and the lady sit on the other side
and they watch me as I eat the samwich and drink the milk. I'm unner
the covers and the doc's hand's restin' on my leg. He give me a
little squeeze and I smile at him. The lady's hand is also on my leg
but it's closer to my crotch and it's warm and good.
"How's Joey doin'?" I ask.
"He's sleeping good and I think he'll be much better in the
morning. It may take a few days for him t' be all well but I think
he's gonna be jus' fine."
"That's great t' hear." I push the tray away. "I'm finish.
Thanks a lot."
"Then we'll let you get to sleep, Tony." They both stand up.
"My real name's Anton," I say quietly.
"What's that?" the lady ask.
"I jus' wanna tell yas that my real name's Anton. Tony's a
nickname. My name's Anton Karel Galicki. Karel's spelled K-A-R-E-
L."
"Anton," say the man. "That's a beautiful name. Very
beautiful."
The lady doc walk up to me and kiss me on my forehead and both
my cheek and then give me a big strong hug. I give her a kiss on her
cheek. It the firs' time I kiss her. She give me a very big smile
and then squeeze my shoulder. The man doc bend over and he also give
me a hug and also kiss me on both cheeks. They leave a small light
on in the room and turn out all the other.
As they walk outta the room I hear the lady say t' the man, "I
think he'll clean up jus' fine."
Then I rememmer mine and Joey's pack in the car trunk. My money
in it! I need t' get it back. But not now. Now I'm sleepy. I
gotta get t' sleep now.
I fall asleep pretty quick but wonderin' about what she mean by
"he'll clean up jus' fine."
And why'd she say in English? Did she want me t' unnerstand?
"He'll clean up jus' fine."
The End of Part 1 - To Be Continued.
