~~~Kyle Part 5
Kyle's car was located in a parking lot in New Jersey, so after taking a
subway over to it and packing our stuff up, we headed on our way, with a
near 11 hour drive to our hometown.  As we pulled out night was beginning
to get fall, my hand went over to Kyle's leg, and I leaned over and kissed
him.  Turning to look at me, he asked "what?"  I replied, "Nothing, I just
know that going back home is gong to be hard on me, but I know that having
you there will make it easier on me.  In addition, for that I can't say
thank you enough.  Having to be around my family, really for the first time
in a long time is going to be difficult.  It's just been so long since I've
seen them."
"Wait, I thought you had seen your dad this past Christmas, didn't you see
the rest of your family then?"  Kyle asked.
"Kyle, life around my family is different, yes I saw my dad, but I didn't
do anything with the rest of my family, I didn't even spend Christmas with
them, I was in for a week, I stayed with Kay.  I haven't been to my
families Christmas in so many years; it's because I wasn't wanted there.
My stepmother doesn't want me to be apart of the family, because I'm gay.
The rest of the family, when they gather for Christmas, well let's say that
my stepmother is there again, and since she doesn't welcome me, I avoid it.
I feel that its better on the rest of the family if I just don't make an
appearance.  It's an easy way to stop an argument."  I said.
"So let me get this straight, you haven't spent Christmas with your family
in that long, instead you spent it alone, if I would have known that I
would have found you sooner.  I don't think anyone should be alone on
Christmas."  Kyle replied.
"Well not exactly, I mean yes, I haven't been around my family for
Christmas, but I wasn't alone, I was with friends, true there were times
when they would be off with there families, but sometimes I would join them
others it was just me time, like a break, from everything.  Besides I only
get a few days off anyways its not like it's a week or something, its only
2 maybe 4 days depending on where it falls."
He said nothing, just driving his eyes on the road, looking forward.  I had
put some music on in the background, but neither of us were really
listening to it, the music was more of something to keep us occupied.  I
stared out the passenger window, watching the city get smaller and smaller,
the lights of the cars around us weave in and out of traffic.  I began to
get a little tired, it had been a long day, I was needing sleep, I knew
sooner or later so would he, so I said something to break the silence.
"Kyle, I'm going to sleep for a little while, wake me up if you start to
get tired, I'll drive whenever you're ready, or if you want to stop.  OK
babe."
"Sure, sure, you get some sleep, I should be alright for a little while,
and I'll wake you if I need to stop or something.  Goodnight"
With that I leaned my chair back in his car, it was a comfortable car, it
was a little newer, I mean, it wasn't brand new or anything, but it was at
most 4 years old, he drove a blue Saturn, little details like the name slip
my mind now, but I will never forget us leaving the city together.
I awoke later to the sound of Kyle on the phone, I laid there as he
finished the conversation, "yes mom, I think so, no he's just waking up,
we're just leaving Pennsylvania, yes mom I'll be safe, I will pull over in
a bit, I'm fine, of we'll see you in the morning, night mom." He hung up
the phone, "well look who's awake, its around 11 you want any food, or a
drink or anything?" he asked
I was getting a little hungry, he had been driving for four hours I felt
bad for making him drive that long, while I slept, but he seemed fine.  "I
think food would be a great idea, you tired of driving yet?"
"Its not the driving that bothers me so much, as it was your snoring, I
take it you slept well," he stated
"I did not snore, I did sleep well, but I don't snore, I merely breath, I
can drive for a bit after we eat, how was your mom?"
"She's busy at home preparing for your arrival, she's happy to finally meet
you, and also wanting us to be safe on the way down.  She and I had been
talking for maybe 30 minutes before you woke up, just talking making sure
I'm not falling asleep and whatever. There's a Perkins's off this exit, you
wanna stop there?" he asked as the exit approached.
"That works for me, thanks for letting me sleep for so long, I only wanted
a nap of maybe an hour or two.  I guess I was a little more tired then I
expected."  I replied.  He pulled off the exit and into the parking lot.
We stayed in the car, seeing the lights around us in the nearly empty
parking lot.  I leaned over and kissed him.  He began to kiss me back, not
anywhere near, where he normally would, he kissed me hard and passionately,
he also started pushing me back towards my seat, to the point where I was
sitting back with him leaning across the center.  Slowly he came across the
center console making his way into my seat onto of me.  Until he was
basically sitting in my seat, on top of me, the two of us making out.
Suddenly we broke from our kiss, Kyle looked deeply at me and said, "I love
you, you know that right, I always have and always will."  I kissed him
again. "I know that, and I love you too."  With that, we began to untangle
ourselves and make our way out of the car and into the restaurant.
Eating together inside was nothing big, we were seated and ordered, our
food soon came and we ate that, continuing conversation over our food, as
soon as we were finished the server came with our check, I paid this time,
and we made our way out into the cool summers evening air.  Taking the
keys, I unlocked the car and soon we began to drive off.  The driving time
passed rather quickly, Kyle had fallen asleep shortly after we got back
onto the interstate.  I reached into the back seat and pulled the black
case that I had grabbed before we left New York, flipping through it
quickly I found a CD that I hadn't played in a while, I started listening
to it, letting the familiar music play over and over again.  When Kyle
awoke around three I was still playing the CD, I had kept it on repeat the
entire time he slept, "what are you listening to?" he asked after a few
moments.
I took some time to reply, I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell him about it
or not, but I knew I needed to, "well, it's a musical, to be more exact
it's my musical"
"You're musical, you mean another show that your getting ready to star in,
when do you go into rehearsals?" he asked
"no, its not a my musical that I will be staring in, it's like I said it's
MY musical, I wrote it, well I wrote the lyrics and book, Brooks wrote the
music.  It was a project years and years ago, he and I spent some time
working on together, everything on it was done on it.  We just never had
time to do anything with it, so we just dropped the project."
"So why did you bring it back out then, you reworking some of it in your
head or something?"  Kyle said
"Something like that, I was thinking now was the time to maybe try and get
someone to produce it.  I mean, it is a very different type of show then
what's around today, I just am not sure yet.  I haven't done anything with
it in years, hell the last time this CD was played was when I was getting
ready for a performance at Joe's Pub, years ago, Matt, a few other people,
and I did a cabaret night there.  I did 3 songs, one of them was from this
show, that was back when we were halfway working on getting it produced,
shortly after he and I stopped.  Working on the show had been one of the
things keeping me going during a hard time, I felt like I was alone, and no
one wanted me around, it was in the back of my head for years before it
came into discussions with Brooks.  But he agreed and we started work on it
soon after, 4 years later, he and I had a full musical, just not really
sure what were wanted to do with it exactly."
Kyle just sat there looking as the Virginia scenery was passed by us in the
night, "Well, when do I get to hear this musical.  I mean I know I will
sooner or later, but when?"  He asked.
"I don't know when do you wanna hear it?  I mean I have all of it with me,
music, tracks, demo CD's, script, its all here"
"You mean to tell me you brought everything for it with you.  To come home
with it, what on earth for?"
"Well, my father is on his death bed, basically, I just thought that he
might want to know about it.  See when I worked on it, it always made me
think of my grandmother, and I guess I just want him to know that both he
and my grandmother taught me well and that I wanted to do something to make
them proud.  As for you hearing it whenever you want to hear it, just let
me know.  I'll play you the demo sometime.
"I better get more then just the demo playing."  He said as he took my hand
and kissed it.  "enough of that, we need to wake up soon, anything you have
in mind that might be a good idea to blast and sing to, although I will
warn ya, I can't sing very well at all."
"I'm for it, and I guess when we get back to NYC I'll just have to set you
up with an instructor to teach you how to then but before we start you
wanna take a little detour for a bit?  We need gas again and I could do for
a drink and to use the bathroom, and maybe some time with you"
So, we pulled off the interstate, filled the car with gas and went inside
to get something to drink and relieve ourselves, as Kyle finished up in the
bathroom, I was standing at the sink, finishing washing my hands, he walked
up behind me and started kissing one my neck, I immediately started
laughing.  "Kyle as romantic as making out with you in the bathroom may
sound, I really think that maybe we should we should maybe save it for a
few minutes, besides it kinda smells in here."
We made our way out of the bathroom, getting something to drink and making
our way to the cashier the pay, as we walked up, Kyle took my hand, I was
accustomed to it now.  I mean he and I had been doing it for a few days
now, but as we got to the register, the guy gave us both this nasty look, I
was completely unaware of it.  We paid and began to walk out, but as Kyle
pushed open the door, I heard the guy at the register mumble "fags", and I
immediately stopped and turned, "what did you say?"
"You heard me.," the guy said.
Kyle was still at the door behind me, "Scott, just let it go, and lets get
out of here"
"Yeah, that's right do what your little girlfriend says and leave you
fucking faggots" the guy said.
"what... what the hell, man, what's your deal, we haven't done anything to
offend you, nothing to make you get all pissed off, besides we were leaving
we were gonna be out of your way in just a few minutes, and you wouldn't
have these `fags' in your hair anymore, what the hell man, its my
boyfriend, I mean, at least I have a someone, he'll be beside me longer
faster and stronger then anyone would ever be for you.  Why don't ya, just
go back to your little desk back there and go to bed, I mean forgive us for
coming in here and waking you from your long winters nap, oh great one.
Fucking Breeder" I lashed out, I was furious, I hadn't had to deal with
anything like this in years, since I had to deal with in back in college,
in high school.  High School, my step mother, calling me a fag late one
night, shortly before she kicked me out of the home I had lived in since I
was little, Kyle, screaming it across the lunchroom to make me leave him
behind all those years ago.  I couldn't take it, I started to cry, I pushed
past Kyle and made my way to the car, getting in the driver's seat,
starting the car, tears rolling down my face at this point.  I wasn't sure
what happened, it was like that word, which had caused so many painful
memories and situations throughout my life, like I couldn't escape it.
Like I wasn't able to survive anymore.  How can a word so small that I
hadn't had to deal with in years hurt me that much in just a moment.  Maybe
it was from living in NYC, not having to deal with people around you
hurting you in so many ways with that word, or from theatre, where so many
actors and dancers were gay, that I had surrounded myself with them.
Blocking out the painful memories of that word and what it did to me.
Tears were still streaming down my face, but I felt different, I felt
comforted, Kyle was there, his arms around me, calming me. "I'm sorry Kyle,
I couldn't help it, it still hurts, I thought I had overcome everything
that that word did to me, but I haven't.  When he said it all that was
replaying in my head was the night my stepmother called me that, and well
you, you doing the same" he stopped, his hands stopped rubbing me, almost
as if his heart stopped.
"I'm sorry, you know how sorry I am over that, I can't forgive myself for
it, but look at us, were here together, now.  I'm not going to leave you
alone Scott, I'm not going to let yourself get hurt anymore.  Believe me,
I'll be here for you, you have to stay strong though, for yourself, for me,
for your dad.  Here lets get you into the passenger seat, I'll drive, let
you get this out, ok."
"Kyle, I wanna go home, please."
"Scott, just lay down, sleep for a little while, we'll be home soon enough"
I lay in the passenger seat for some unknown time, going in and out a sleep
the whole time.  I heard him call my name sometime after dawn had occurred,
wondering where we were, Kyle's hand came over, and started to rub my
shoulder.  "Scotty, wake up, please were almost here."
I slowly sat up, feeling horrible about what had happened and what I had
thought about.  "Kyle, I'm sorry about what I said earlier, I didn't mean
to hurt you, I don't know what happened to me, what made me lash out at
that guy, I'm just sorry."
"Scott, listen, its ok, it was your first time having to deal with
something like that in a long time, it was just emotions, you didn't hurt
me, its just I saw how much I hurt you so long ago when I said that.  But
listen, I've been thinking about it, I think it was good, just to let you
get that off your chest before we got to the hospital.  Cause more then
likely, your step mom will say something along the same lines, so you
getting it out back there was better than in the hospital.  So its ok
really."  He said
"Thank you Kyle, thanks, I guess I had just been away from homophobes from
so long I wasn't sure what I was suppose to do."
"No problem, but here's your question for right now, do you wanna go on to
the hospital, or do you wanna go to the house, I know mom would love it,
and she's probably fix breakfast and maybe something for us to take to the
hospital.  So what do you want to do first?"
"Ummm..."  I said, pulling down the mirror to look into it, "wow, do you
think we could go your parents' house, I look horrible, and don't really
want to go to the hospital looking like this, I'd rather look somewhat
presentable."
"Well, that works for me, I told mom we'd probably just go to the hospital,
but knowing my mother, she..."his phone was ringing.  Reaching for his
phone, "I swear I was gonna say she should be calling by now, Mom, hey, yes
were getting off the interstate now, no, were going to come on to the house
first, do you mind...  Yes mom, no we're just going to shower, change, eat
before we head over to the hospital...  I don't' know mom, you can ask him
when we get there, were on our way... It won't be more then 10 minutes
ok...Love you too mom, bye."  Hanging up the phone, he said, "I swear she's
going to be the death of me someday.  She just wont stop, she glad were on
our way, she had already started fixing breakfast because she thought we'd
want to get food before we went to the hospital, just a thought, unless you
want to start getting calls all the time, don't give her your number, mine
is enough."
"Well, I think its cute, at least she loves for you enough to call you,
besides, I haven't had southern cooking in forever, I cant wait now" I said
laughing
Within minutes, Kyle was pulling his car into the driveway of a beautiful
home, I loved it, I knew that I would feel better here.  We had barely
gotten out of the car before his mother came running outside.  "OOOOOO!!!
Welcome home, welcome home, how was the drive, you didn't get too tired did
you, no problems on the road, no tickets.  Oh my baby, he's home, I missed
you, I'm glad your home, Umm" she said giving him a hug.  While she did
this I had made my way to the trunk to start getting bags out of the car, I
felt underdressed to be meeting his parents, I was in jeans and a tee
shirt, that had been through an almost 13 hour drive, and an hour of which
I had cried through. All of a sudden I heard shuffling feet, "don't think
you're getting away that easy, I mean really Scott, welcome home, oh for
heaven sakes put those bags down, let Kyle get them, your our guest, gim'me
a hug, ummm, its nice to finally meet you, even if it is on such grim
circumstances.  Well, come in come in, let's get you fed and get you
inside, I'm sure you wanna get ready to go to the hospital sometime soon,
but I'm gonna hold you off for as long as I can, how's that." Wow does this
lady like to talk, and fast really to get her speed of talking try all of
that in under 2 minutes.
She was about to go on some more, I could tell, but Kyle stopped her, "Mom,
let him be, please, its been a long trip and I think we both could use just
a little adjustment time, please, we'll be inside in just a few minutes,
ok."  She nodded and quickly made her way back inside.  "Hey, I warned you
about her, you just didn't believe me did ya?"
"No, I guess I was just thinking you were exaggerating a little, but wow, I
do feel welcomed, I haven't had anyone do that to me since I was little,
and that was my moms mom, when they lived in Florida and I hadn't seen them
in a year.  Here, lets get these bags in" I said picking up my own.
"Ah, ah, ah, you heard her, she said I was to carry them in, she may be
crazy at times, but she's serious, guest don't carry their own bags into
the house, I'll get in trouble if you do, and please save me from getting
in trouble please."  Kyle said.
"Um, alright, thanks babe," I said kissing him on the cheek, "I'll just go
inside."
Kyle followed me into the house, when I opened the door, I laughed a
little, it was just like he said, beige and gold were the two primary
colors she had used to decorate with, but it was beautiful, equaling the
outside in beauty, and the smell.  The house smelled wonderful, it reminded
me of holidays growing up, smelling the bacon and sausage, biscuits, gravy.
Everything.  I was now hungry.  Kyle shut the door behind us, "Scott here,
follow me to our room." He said.
"Our room, our room, are you sure that's a good idea, I mean this is our
parents house, are they going to be alright with that?"
"Yes, that's one thing Mom and I talked about last night while you were
sleeping, just follow me."  Walking trough the foyer down a little hallway
with the kitchen to the left and a bedroom to the right, as we walked in
Kyle placed our bags at the foot of the bed, and walked over to me.
Wrapping his arms around me, he whispered, "welcome home" he kissed my
neck, and held me close.  His mother appeared at the door, startled a
little, "Oh, sorry, didn't mean to intrude, just dropping off some towels
and seeing if I needed to get you boys anything else, I have breakfast
ready in the kitchen, whenever you're ready just come in" she said.
""thanks mom, we'll be in shortly" Kyle said, breaking his hold on me.  His
mother left the room, Kyle turned to me saying, "Do you wanna go ahead and
shower or you want to eat first?"
"I think I want to get a shower first, you want to join me?"  I said taking
his hands.
"As much as I would love to, I think that right now, you should probably go
ahead by yourself, lets not give everyone else in the house any ideas about
anything, besides we have to save some hot water."  He said laughing,
pulling me closer to him, then he kissed me.  It was different then how he
kissed me in New York; it was, I don't know, more comfortable, I guess he
was happy to be back here, in his home.  A place for him to be comfortable.
We broke from our kiss, he started unpacking our bags, laying out what he
was going to wear to the hospital, I took my towel and went into the
bathroom, started the water and got in, letting the water roll over me and
ease me a bit.  It had been a long night, many things had happened, but out
of all of them, a song was playing in my head over and over again.  The
last chorus of my musical was repeating itself over and over in my head.
For life is a song, simple brave and strong, Let the melody guide you to
where you ought to be, For when you have your melody, your drams can come
true, And show you just what to do
It just played in my head until I heard a knock at the door, it was Kyle
"Babe, you about done, breakfast is getting cold."
"Yeah I was just getting out," I said turning off the water and stepping
out, " I was just thinking."
"Oh really, about what?" he said, as he began to undress and get in the
shower.
"Nothing really, you know how I told you about my musical earlier, I was
just thinking about it, I can't seem to get part of a song out of my head,
that's all."
"Well, like I said earlier, I want to hear it sometime, and maybe there was
a reason you're thinking about it, who knows."  He said.
We talked a little further about other things, while he showered and I got
ready.  I went on into the bedroom and got dressed, then went into the
kitchen to get some food.
Kyle's father was sitting on a barstool reading the paper, in the kitchen,
his mother was doing a few other things around the kitchen.  As I walked in
his mother turned and said "There, I bet that feels much better, doesn't
it, Scott, I want to introduce you, Kyle's father, Scott this is Michael
Richards, my husband.  Michael, this is Scott, the boy Kyle was telling us
about, and I guess its safe to say, his boyfriend."
"Scott, nice to meet you, and I'm sorry to hear about your father" Kyle's
father said.  It was civil, yet I could tell that he was not happy in
hearing his wife call me Kyle's boyfriend.  Yet, nothing in his voice led
me to believe he hated me.
"Nice to meet you too sir, and thank you for that about my father, and also
for allowing me to stay here, I can't say thank you enough for it.  I might
not have come if it wasn't for him."  I said.
Kyle's father went back to his paper, while his mother rushed me over to
the stove to fill my plate, it smelled amaahzing.  While she shuffled me
over she said, "We've got to get some food in your, why your nothing but
skin and bones, how does your body take it, I mean really, dancing and
singing like that every night, with nothing on you to give you any
energy..."  His Father interrupted her, "Susan, leave the boy be, I'm sure
he'll be fine, he is a grown man after all, not a child, I'm sure he knows
how to nourish his body properly to do whatever it is he does."
"Thank you sir, I do, although the most I have to watch out for is just
what I eat and drink that will dry out my voice, but I have a week off from
performing, so I don't think I'll have to worry about over working it this
week.  Although Brooks, might get mad if he finds out."
"Who's Brooks?" his mother asked.
 I began to explain about Brooks being my vocal coach and whatnot.  "My
voice and body are what have helped me with my career, I couldn't have made
it to where I am without them, I just need to take care of them both and
stay healthy.  I don't drink milk because it clogs your vocal chords, I
haven't had soda in 6 years because it shortens your breath, and I stay
away from alcohol, because it not only dehydrates you but also can hurt
your body too, that and some family reasons."
"Family reasons, I haven't heard about this yet." It was Kyle, he had come
into the kitchen while I was talking.
"Well, its something I don't talk about that much, but my mother's side of
the family has a history of alcoholism, both my grandfather and older
brother were alcoholics.  Yes I had an older brother, he was from my
mother's previous marriage before my dad, when I was born he was 17, living
with his father, and he died of alcohol poisoning when he as 23.  My
grandfather, well I never knew him, he committed suicide when my mom was
19, because of his alcoholism.  So I just try and stay away from it, so my
life doesn't end up down the same road as theirs."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know," Kyle's mother said, "gosh that mush be hard on
someone, to loose nearly everyone that's close to you in your life because
of a disease or problem, I'm so sorry honey."
"Really, its fine, I've put a lot of things from my past behind me, and I'm
able to talk about it, that's just one of the many things.  But its also my
charity, you know most people have some charity or organization that they
work with to help raise money or awareness for, alcoholism is mine.
Actually, the day Kyle and I met again, I had done an interview for an
article about it.  Just helping people out with the problem is something
that makes me feel better."
"Well, I'm sure Scoot has had enough of prodding into his business for this
morning, is everyone about ready to go to the hospital.  I'm ready when you
are."  Mr. Richards said, yes Kyle's father, it kind of blew me away that
he wanted to come with us, and also that he stopped the emotional story
before it got too far.
"Wait, I didn't know you were going to come with us."  I said, still
surprised.
"Well, of course dear, I mean we know Kyle will be with you, but Michael
and I both feel that in your situation, as Kyle told me on the phone last
night while you slept in the car, that the more people you bring with you,
the less likely your step mother is to cause a scene.  Both Kyle and I will
be there to keep you from saying anything that might cause a problem, and
Michael, well he's just going to be the muscle behind the group, you know
ruff up anyone who might need it."  Susan said
"You really don't have to come, I mean, Kyle and I will be fine by
ourselves.  Besides..."
"Scott, don't argue, you'll learn soon enough that when either of them make
up their minds there is no use in trying to change it.  Just smile and
agree" his father said.
"Well, I just have to make a call real quickly, and we can go," turning to
Kyle.  "I'm going to call Kay and let her know that we're on our way.
She'll be able to clear out the room a little."
Within a few minutes we were on our way, phone call to Kay completed.
Kyle, myself, Michael, and Susan all got into their Explorer and departed
for the hospital.  Myself being unsure of what to expect when we got there.
I think Kyle felt that I was scared, and comforted me as best he could.
Well, this was a transition chapter, nothing big, except for some things
happening during the drive, and of course the arrival at Kyle's Parents
house.  I know its been a while on any updates at all, and this defiantly a
long overdue update with 2 chapters, (4 and 5).  I can only hope that
reading this story provides anyone who reads it hope, and although, as I
have said before this story is fictional, Scott and I have many things in
common, not everything is true.  In fact, my older brother and grandfather
both have or are dealing with alcoholism, (my grandfather did shoot himself
in the driveway when my mom was growing up).  My brother needs support for
his problem and I may sound odd for me to as it, but "if you know someone
suffering from problems with alcoholism, please they are not alone" find
them help.  I have watched my brother's mind and life deteriorate over the
years, from a promising recording career, a loving wife and child, to now
where he can't keep a job and is barely able to count change.  I know, stop
rambling, but please if you got thins far into the rant session, thank you
and don't leave your loved one hanging.  As always guys thanks for reading
and your comments are greatly appreciated.
