Nurse and the Patient, Part 24

Jonathan opened the door and greeted both Glenn Maxwell and Ty
Bennett. He invited them inside.
"Thanks for seeing us, Glenn said.
"We realize it's kind of short notice, but we need to run some
things by Lance," Ty added.
"You guys care for some coffee?"
"Thanks, that would be great, Jon, Ty answered for both he and the
lawyer.
"Morning, guys," Lance called from the den.
Jonathan handed each one a steaming cup and asked, "So, what brings
the two of you out together? And so early, I might add."
"I guess you might say we each have a piece of information and
thought we should share our news at the same time with you. You go first,
Glenn," Ty invited.
"Well, for starters, I have the lab report back on your paternity
case, Lance." Glenn opened up his brief case and took out an envelope. "I
don't think you will be surprised." He handed the large manila package over
to Lance.
Lance held the envelope, and for a time did nothing except stare at
the yellow paper.
"You okay, Babe?" Jonathan asked when he didn't make a move to open
the flap.
"Yeah, I think so. It's just that I know when I read this my life
is going to change forever. It will never be the same, ever again."
"Is that so bad?" Jon spoke the words softly.
Another minute passed before Lance took a deep breath and opened
the envelope. He pulled several sheets out, his fingers shaking as they
attempted to hold on to them. All eyes in the room were on him as he
silently read what was before him.
Finally he said, "So, it is true. And to think all these years I
hated him so much, couldn't stand the very sight of him. And now, I sure as
hell don't have to put up with his shit."
"I take it Edith was telling the truth," Jon said.
Lance nodded. "She's gold, that woman is. None finer," he added.
"She is a great lady," Ty agreed. "I have spoken with her several
times. She has been very helpful in my investigation."
"So, what does this mean, Glenn?" Lance asked. "I realize Sam is
not my legal father. Where do we stand from a legal stand point now?"
Glenn was thoughtful for a moment. Finally he said, "Well, first
thing's first. Yes, we have proof that he is not your father. I guess what
happens next, to an extent, is what do you want to happen? Oh, I realize
there is going to be some legal repercussions, but that will be out of our
hands. Question is, how do you want to precede now? How much do you want to
fight Sam for what is rightfully yours?"
"May I interject something here?" Ty Bennett spoke up.
	"By all means," Lance nodded.
"All right, here is what we are faced with. Legally, I'm talking
about. As I mentioned last week, they were not able to really conclude how
the fire began. Your father's, excuse me, Samuel Thompson's maid, Sarah,
admits to using scented candles around the house on a regular basis, and
she `thinks' that may have been the case the day of the fire. At least that
is what she put in the report she gave us. However, when the ruins of the
house were searched, there was no sign that had been the cause of the
fire."
"So, we're still at square one, so to speak," Jonathan said.
"Well, yes, and no," Ty answered. "Lance, I think I mentioned to
you, did I not, that we might be able to offer Sam some kind of deal. How
would you feel about doing that?" Ty leaned forward in his seat. "You see,"
he continued, "there are so many different ways we can go after the man. As
for his part in your family company, well, he is covered there, in that he
was married to your mother, and from what we can determine from the records
we've seen, of course their marriage was legal, and, legally, the way
things were put into motion, what was legally your mother's was also
legally his. However, I do think we can prove he was embezzling money from
the company and stock piling it for his own personal use. However, that
could take a lot of time and money to prove it. Would you be willing to
offer the man a sort of `get out of jail free' card? And I do mean that in
the literal sense," Ty added.
Lance looked at Jonathan and asked, "What do you think I should
do?"
Jon shrugged his shoulders. "I have not a clue. What do you think,
Glenn?" he asked.
"Ty is right, it could take a long time to prove anything, and in
the end, you really can say how it would turn out once it went before a
judge." Glenn turned and faced the police officer. "Do you have any idea
just what kind of `deal', as you put it, would be offered to Samuel
Thompson?"
"Basically it would amount to what we could offer the man in order
to get him out of our hair and out of sight for ever."
"May I say something here?" Glenn interjected.
	"Please," Lance said.
"Okay, I'm not talking legal here, please understand that. However,
I do have a suggestion. How about if I do a company audit, determine just
what its actual assets are and go from there? And by assets, I mean actual
value current and present, and accounted for, so to speak. Not anything
tied up in any kind of equity, but hard cold actual cash and assets. Let me
do that, and then I will draw up a proposal and get back with you."
Lance was thoughtful for a moment. Finally he spoke, saying,
"Sounds good to me. Bring us a report of actual worth, and we can go from
there. Is that the way to handle it, Ty?"
"Sounds very fair," the police officer nodded. "Much more than the
son of a bitch deserves," he added. "And, you didn't hear that from me
either."
"Will the police department agree to that kind of deal?" Jonathan
asked.
"Most likely they will," Ty answered. "However, if the District
Attorney decides they want to go after him for fraud, it will be out of our
hands."
"Which could be in Lance's favor, could it not?" Jonathan pointed
out.
"Very much so," Ty agreed. "You see, should that happen, well, the
dirty work would be done for you."
Lance admitted a soft sigh. "Part of me would like to see that
happen, to see the old man lose it all; yet another part says to kick him
the hell out of my life and move on."
"Well, let's see what we come up with on my end," Glenn said
standing to his feet. "When I finish with my audit, I'll get with you
guys. Then we'll follow up with a visit to your office," he said to Ty.
Ty also stood to his feet. "Sounds good to me," he said. "I'm with
Lance on this, in that I want to see the old guy getting what he has coming
to him, if nothing more than to lose all he thought was his to keep."
Lance walked the two men to the door and soon rejoined Jon. "Well,
what do you think?" he asked.
Before Jonathan could answer, the telephone rang. He listened as
Lance talked.
"Good morning, my dear. How are you?"
It was silent in the room as Lance listened to whoever was on the
other end of the line.
Finally, "Sure, we can drop by this afternoon. Is everything okay?"
More silence. "Okay, see you this afternoon at two o'clock
sharp. Good bye, Edith."
"What was on her mind?" Jonathan asked.
"I'm not sure. She asked that we drop by this afternoon if at all
possible. She has something to tell us."
"Hum, wonder what that might be?"
Lance shrugged his shoulders. "Don't have a clue. I always enjoy
the chance to spend time with that lady."
"She is something else," Jonathan agreed.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

For the second time in less than a week Jonathan and Lance found
themselves ringing the old fashioned door bell belonging to Edith
Baxter. They heard her foot steps behind the closed door and waited for her
to greet them.
"How are my two boys?" she asked as she threw the door opened.
Lance reached out and gave her a hug as he walked through the
door. "It's so good to see you, Edith, he said warmly. He hugged her
tightly to him enjoying the feel of having her next to him. She had such a
comforting touch.
Jonathan also hugged the old lady. "Hello, Edith."
"Jonathan, how are you, my dear? Are you taking good care of my
grandson?"
"I try to," he assured her. "Yet, I think it's he that takes the
better care of me."
"I hope you two realize just how much you have to be grateful for,"
she reminded them both.
"Oh, we do," Lance said. "And we hope you realize the same thing."
"Have a seat, you two. I've made tea for us."
	"Need any help," Jonathan offered.
"I can manage, thank you very much!"
Edith Baxter soon returned with three steaming cups and a small
plate of cookies.
"I see you are determined to make us gain wait," Lance teased his
grandmother.
Looking over the tops of her glasses, she said, "You look as if you
could stand to gain a bit. It's not healthy to be that thin."
"Any complaints, Jon?" Lance asked turning to Jonathan.
	"None from me," Jonathan grinned.
Over their tea Lance said, "So, what's on the agenda for this
afternoon?"
Edith held her cup in one hand and traced the rim with a finger
from the other hand. Finally she said, "I feel I need to say something to
you, something I should have spoken of sooner."
She had a troubled look appear on her face, and Lance wanted to
erase it immediately.
"You can tell us anything, Edith. You know that," he said.
"You remember that I told you the Wilson's were a private sort of
people?"
Lance nodded. "I remember," he said.
"Well, they were, and I never interfered in any way. They were good
to me by keeping me involved in your father's life with the pictures they
sent me from time to time."
Edith stopped talking and a far away look settled in her eyes. She
didn't speak for some time. Finally, just as Lance was about to say
something, she said, "Your father has a brother. He's several years younger
than Carter. Five years, to be exact."
Lance was stunned. "My father has a brother?"
Edith Baxter nodded her head. "That's right. His name is Calen."
"Calen Wilson." Lance spoke the name slowly, listening to each
syllable. "Wow. Does he live around here?"
Edith was quiet for a moment. Finally, softly, she said, "Yes, he
does."
For the second time Lance said, "Wow."
Jonathan reached over and placed a hand on Lance's leg. "You okay?"
he asked.
Lance nodded. "Just taking all this in," he said.
"Lance, would you like to meet him?"
Lance was startled, and his face showed his feelings. "Do you know
him?"
"Sort of," she answered. "Well, not really, but I can tell you
where to find him. That is, should you decide that's what you want to do,"
she added.
"I don't know." Lance was suddenly undecided.
"What ever you want, we'll do, Babe," Jon said quietly.
"I don't feel any connection to him," Lance finally said. "However,
I would love to hear more about my father, and maybe he could tell me what
I need to know."
"So, you have accepted the fact that Carter is your father?" The
words spoken, Edith Baxter's face lit up like a Christmas tree.
"I had no cause to doubt you," Lance assured you. "However, we did
send out an order to have Sam tested."
"And," she prodded when he didn't continue.
"And it was proved that he is not my father."
"Are you okay with that?" she asked quietly.
"I am," he assured her. "I hated Sam Thompson so much that I felt
guilty. I knew it was wrong to feel the way I did about my father, and now,
I can hate the man and feel no guilt at all."
Tears slowly made their way down her two wrinkled cheeks. "I do
wish Carter could have known you. He would have loved you so much, Lance. I
hope you can believe that."
"I want to believe that," Lance admitted. "That's why I am
considering looking up this Calen Wilson and seeing what he has to
say. That is, if he will even agree to see me," he ended.
"Where does the man live?" Jonathan asked.
"As far as I know, he still lives in the old home place. After the
death of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson a few years back I heard he and his wife moved
back into the old house."
"Is it close by?" Jon asked her.
"Not far," she answered. "On the south edge of town," she said
getting to her feet.
Edith walked over to the old fashioned desk and pulled a drawer
out. She reached inside for a piece of paper. She handed it to Lance. "Here
is his address and telephone number. I looked it up, just in case you
decided to get in touch with the man. He is, after all, your uncle. At
least by adoption," she added softly.
"Do you think I should do this?" he asked Jonathan.
"I'm for whatever you need to do to make it right for you,
Lance. If you can find out more about your family, and that's what you want
to do, then I am all for it."
Lance smiled tenderly at the man sitting beside him. "I love you,
Jonathan Davis."
"Well, you know how much I love you, Babe. Both of you," Jon added
taking Edith in as well with his look.
"Well, you both are my boys, and I'm pretty sure you know how I
feel."
"Do you think I should give this Calen a call, Edith?"
Edith smiled at her grandson. "As Jon said, I am for whatever you
need to do to help you through all this. After all, you have gone through
an awful lot this past year. It's been a lot to take in, what with your
accident and all, not to mention dealing with that bastard, Sam Thompson."
Lance looked at Jonathan and asked, "Should I give him a call now?
Or wait until we are home," he ended.
"Again, what you are most comfortable with," Jon answered. "Do you
need to think about what you want to say first? After all, do you think he
has any idea you exist?"
"Does he know?" Lance asked his grandmother.
"I really don't know," the old woman admitted. "If your mother ever
spoke with the Wilson's, I couldn't say. If she had, I can't imagine they
would have stayed away from you. I will have to say this; they loved Carter
as if he were their own. From the pictures they sent me, after Calen came
along, I don't believe they treated him any differently than they did
Carter. They loved them both the same. Or so it appeared from what I saw,"
she ended.
Lance was quiet for a moment or two. Finally he said, "I think I
would like to give him a call while we are here. I think that's what I
want."
"There is the telephone," Edith pointed. "Over there on the desk,"
she added.
Lance looked down at the piece of paper he held. His mouth was
suddenly dry. Swallowing, he said, "So what do I say? `Hey, my name is
Lance Thompson. I think my father and you were brothers. Sounds lame, don't
you think?"
"Just speak from your heart, Babe. That's all you need to do."
Jonathan tried to encourage the man he loved.
Lance stood to his feet and walked over to the desk. He pulled the
chair out and sat down. He reached for the telephone and then stopped, his
fingers still stretching through mid air.
Then taking a deep breath, he picked up the telephone and punched
the numbers Edith had written down on paper.
The whirring sound in his ear went on for such a long time that he
suddenly felt relief that no one was home. Then:
	"Hello?"
The voice in Lance Thompson's ear was deep, yet very distinct and
precise.
For the briefest of time Lance seemed to lose control of his
voice. No words came out. Finally he managed to say, "Yes, my name is Lance
Thompson. I am with Smyth Oil Company, and I was wondering if I could make
an appointment to see you. At your convenience, of course," he added
hurriedly.
"Mr. Thompson, what nature of business could we have in common?"
Again, Lance heard that deep, precise tone.
"Please, sir, I would like to meet with you. I promise not to take
up much of your time."
Even though they both strained hard as they could, neither Jonathan
nor Edith could hear what was said next.
"Finally, "I appreciate that, Sir. I will see you tomorrow
afternoon at three o'clock. What? Oh, I see." Lance read off the address
his grandmother had written down on paper. "Is this correct?" he asked.
A few more words were spoken on the other end and Lance ended his
telephone conversation.
"Damn," he said with a shudder.
	Jonathan asked, "Everything okay, Babe?"
Lance nodded. "I guess so. Talk about short and to the point,
that's our Calen Wilson." He looked at Edith without saying a word.
She saw the look and said, "No, if you are asking what I think you
are. Your father was not like that at all. He was kind, sweet, and loved by
everyone he came in contact with. He never knew a stranger."
"Something tells me Calen Wilson is not of the same nature," Lance
said thoughtfully.
"Are you glad you made the call?" Jonathan asked him.
"I am, because I do want to find out all I can about my
father. Please, don't be offended, Edith, but you have to admit, there is
only so much you can tell me. Don't get me wrong, I could listen to what
you have to say about my father over and over, and love every word you
speak. Still, I'm sure Calen Wilson can tell me more. At least what my
father was like growing up."
"I understand, Baby Boy, and I am not offended in any way. I want
you to find out all you can. Not only for you, but for me as well," she
ended softly.
Lance jumped to his feet and gave his grandmother a hug. "I realize
this is hard for you, and that it brings up a lot of memories I'm sure you
buried years ago. I'm sorry, deeply sorry if I am causing you any
hurt. Believe me, that is not my intention at all."
"I understand completely. I want you to do this for the both of us,
okay?"
	"I love you, Edith."
Jonathan was taken back by the words he heard, and he felt so much
love for Lance Thompson. It was the first time he had ever heard the man
say the "love" word to his grandmother, and his heart became so happy he
could hardly stand the emotion. He was so happy for them both. For Lance,
whom he hoped was going to be able to find out so much more about his
father, and for Edith, whom he hoped would once more find the son she had
to give up all those years ago.

End Part 24

This chapter is written for all those who have begged me to continue the
travels of Jonathan and Lance a while longer. I hope you guys have enjoyed
this latest chapter. I realize, no sex happened this time; however, these
two are young, and their lives contain a lot of years of good loving and
fucking. At least I hope so.

Enjoy guys!
