The Rent: Changes Are Hard

So Far: Life's been interesting for David since he left home and a bad
relationship with his stepfather.  Working overnights and living in the
garage apartment of a coworker's, David has become an at first unwilling

circle continues to grow and has even come to include his best friend back
home Mac and Mac's little brother Max...

So here I am, Monday morning just barely home from my working overnight and

"You guys finish up but don't take too long.  I think they figure you two
are going to do something up here but I don't think they were counting on
what we all did."  I promise Lucas we won't and me and Mac clean each other
up while he gives me details about how him, Jacob, Lucas, and Max started
fooling around.  Mac also tells me once we're done, they'll explain
everything about the visit.

"So what's the big mystery?  Len decide his couple of years off from
academia was more fun than being a professor and he's quitting being a
professor again?" I ask walking back out toweling off.  Why cover?  I've

about Len.  "He said it was just a sabbatical from professoring but you
remember how mad Mom got.  Took us all on vacation with out him so she

answers.

"Um, poor Mom was about to ask Dad for a divorce when he came out to her.
She met a new guy and fell in love.  They got married by the same guy that
finalized the divorce."  I ask if I know the guy.  "You bet.  Your
landlord, Del Tyler.  When he was in town seeing if it'd be cool of the

"I think it's great, David.  I miss having a mom and the twins are still

"Oh, it's good," Max assures me as he looks divided about seeing what Jacob
and Jude are laughing at or joining Lucas.  Lucas wins of course.

"I found that application to ASU you filled out but didn't send in `cause
Len pissed you off.  You start Summer session with me."  Now that is a
treat but how do I pay for it?  Mac knows me well enough to know that's
where my mind went to.  "Your grandma left you guys a good chunk of change.
Your mom controls it `til you're twenty-one but part of yours has paid for
four years and a condo off campus."

"Big enough for two?"  Mac smiles even brighter.

"Big enough for your friends here to visit and Lucas and Max."  Now I get
what Lucas and Max are doing.  They're starting to pack me up for a move.
"Jacob's moving here with your mom, who's moving into this room apartment
with Del so we better get the smell out and all those cameras.  Lucas is
putting off college a year since Len and Mitch aren't suer when they're
moving in together so someone has to play house mother with the twins."

"Uncle Mitch?  That's who Len was in denial about?  Ew..."  Mitch is a

"Get real, David.  Mitch isn't really our uncle.  He's the son of Grandpa's

Thomas is a bit of a prick about this whole thing but he's losing his

Finally, we're all loaded up and heading out to my new life and I'm going
to miss what I had, even the parts that started out all fucked up.  And
maybe we won't just use the extra space in the condo for visitors.  Maybe
we can find some down on his luck guy who needs a place to crash and maybe
he'll even pay the rent pretty much the same way I had to...
