Senior Class: First Day Of The Last Year

Okay, there are three weird things about this Health class.  First is that
I don't remember signing up for it.  Sure, it's last period and it's great
to skate to last bell but it's five days a week and run by a teacher who's
gonna torpedo us if we skip.  His name's Mister Woods and he's nice.  He
just has that new teacher smell.  The second weird thing is how a couple of
groups of the Senior guys that make up the class keep on looking at each
other like there's something wrong I don't know about.

First up is Danny Castle is kicker for Upton Sinclair's football team but
that's only part of what makes him popular.  The fact that he's very nice
built, tall with blonde hair, blue yes, and quite handsome isn't either.
Danny is just simply one of the nicest guys at the school.  Guys want to be
him and girls want to be with him, despite the fact he's been together with
Melissa Reyes since midway through their Junior year and hasn't even
considered being with another girl the whole time.  Melissa's an exchange
student this year and I bet Danny is the only eighteen year old boy using a
webcam for romantic reasons.

I guess we traded Melissa for Dirk Heck, recent immigrant to this country.
I had two classes with him after he moved her in the Spring.  He hated
leaving his girlfriend Kasia behind in Germany at first but his mother had
fallen in love with an American doctor.  Once here Dirk found out he liked
being part of a family and he liked the US and what it has to offer.  Dirk
is tall and so blonde the color's almost not there and his eyes are blue
like that too.  He's handsome and has an awesome body from playing soccer
for years.  He has stars tattooed around his nipples, a starburst around
his navel, and a snake eating its tail around his wrist.  His piercings are
a stud in his nose, a Prince Albert, and hoops that go all up and down his
left ear.  I saw the Prince Albert in the showers after gym.  Ow!  I can't
imagine why you'd do it or how much it would have hurt the first couple of
the days if you popped wood in your sleep.

I guess Kevin Fogerty was supposed to be in the class but he's long gone.
He was the quarterback for this years Stallions and a great big giant
jackass.  Turns out his father has stage four cancer and Kevin's spending
his Senior year in Boston.  I'm guessing Kevin's football scholarship to
Wherever University must have been in the bag `cause as much as Kevin loves
his dad, he loves football more.

We have two gay guys in the class.  Jacob Sumner is one and new to school
He has curly brown hair and real dark eyes, and a sensuous mouth and is
very, very openly gay.  Jacob's mother married a local man, Del Tyler,
after some kind of stink with Jacob's father leaving her for a dude.  No
one at school has yet to figure out how to take Jacob.  Jacob likes that
but the other gay kid in class, my cousin Joey Maxwell, is driven nuts by
him!  Joey didn't come out by choice and fits no gay stereotype that I've
ever heard.  He looks like he's Italian but that's what the Black Irish are
known for, swarthy skin, dark wavy hair and eyes, etc.  Joey's first
boyfriend outed him when Stu decided he wasn't really gay and Joey took
advantage of him.  (It further fucked up Joey that when Stu slept with
another guy he killed himself rather than be gay) Joey's worked hard to be
accepted and did it by just being normal so I'm pretty sure he hates Jacob
coming to town and being flamingly out there and accepted because of Joey's
hard work.  At least Joey still has the wrestling team.  He might get a
zillion jokes about why he chose wrestling but he's the team's best
wrestler and has his teammates loyalty 1000 percent!

Gus Pappos is football player two in the class, one of eight brothers and
linebacker on the Stallions and was Kevin's rival in every possible way.
He's tall, dark, and muscular and nearly as big a jerk as Kevin.  Gus' only
saving grace is that Danny is his best friend, so pretty much everyone
figures that if Danny likes Gus he might just be okay.

The last football player is Eddie Woods, who I'm pretty sure is the
teacher's little brother though you'd think that was against the rules, and
one of two Eddies.  Eddie W is a wide receiver, tall, very muscular with
brown hair and blue eyes.  He used to be almost as nice as Danny but I've
been in two other classes with him and Eddie W is one angry dude this year.
Wonder if he's pissed that Kevin bailed on the Stallions?  The other Eddie,
Eddie Hollensteiner, is my best friend.  We've been pals since grade school
and we even work together at the same fast food place after school.
Eddie's handsome and tall, with shaggy blonde hair and very blue eyes.  His
body still has its swimmer's build even though the boy had to give up swim
team to work full time after his mother died.

Always with Eddie and this class will continue their streak are who
everyone calls the Terror Twins.  Dixon is the one who's compact and
powerfully built, with dark eyes and hair and he's a gymnast.  Shane is the
taller one with blue eyes and light blonde hair and he wrestles with Joey.
Oh yeah, if there's anyone on the team who gives Joey a hard time it's
Shane.  They're fraternal twins and nasty to everyone on Earth.  I don't
think they even like each other!

Then there's Rico Castro.  Rico's moody and sullen this year and he blames
his parents.
So does everyone else.  The tall track star moved in with his older
brother Diego the second he turned eighteen to escape a viciously abusive
father and an on again, off again drunk of a mother but things still
managed to get worse.  Mister Castro hospitalized Rico's younger brother
Luis for being gay and Mrs. Castro vanished somewhere with the sons still
at home for their safety.  Not even Diego or Rico knows where to.  Diego's
girlfriend Sue was so scared of Mister Castro, she left him and took their
daughter with her to move back with her family back east.  The happy time
Rico was looking forward to when he finally escaped his dad was ruined by
the man and Rico was not happy.

Last and way not least is me, Stefan Cahill.  Let me be modest and say I'm
good-looking, got dark hair that right now is short and spiky, and dark
eyes.  Oh yeah, I'm a former gymnast but that just means I'm not on the
school's team any more.  I still keep in very good physical shape!

"Stefan, you gotta help me with Rico.  He's making me crazy!" my desperate
cousin begs me.  We're the first two here to class.

"What?  Rico Castro?  Rico's always been super cool with you.  He's the guy
that fixed what Stu did with the wrestling team."  Rico really did.  Rico's
never been a fag basher and he's never gonna drive a friend to a Pride
Rally but he wouldn't let a lie just stay out there.  When Stu quit the
team he claimed it was due to Joey taking advantage of him.  For six
months.  Yeah.  That's what I said.  It looked like Joey was gonna be
driven off the team when Rico stepped up and told how Stu had basically
come on to him the year before.  That led to other team members being
honest about Stu's other questionable behavior and it became less about
Joey being gay and more about which wrestler was more dependable and
reliable, like it should have been.  So Rico making Joey crazy has to be
about something else.

"It's all that crazy shit that went down with Rico's dad trying to kill
Rico's brother for being gay.  Rico flat out told me he can't make up to
Luis about not being there for him so he's going to watch out for me
instead.  I think a shrink suggested it.  Rico used words like `karmic
balance' and that is so not Rico speak!"  Joey sighs.  He doesn't act like
you'd expect a gay guy to act usually but that sigh was pure homo.
"Stefan, when did I ever give anyone the impression I need a protector?"

"I dunno, cuz.  Maybe if a straight guy had been jumped by two guys like
you were last year he would have done more than break one guy's nose and
the arm on the other."  What he should have done is castrate those two
morons.  People stupid enough to attack an All State wrestling champ just
'cause he's gay are too stupid to be allowed to pass their genes on.
"Seriously, is he being that bad?"

"I told you I was going to that under twenty-one thing at the community
center, right?  Rico showed up to make sure it stayed basher free and this
one guy I've been trying to hook up with gave up 'cause he thought Rico was
my boyfriend!"  Ah, now I get it.  Rico's doing some serious cock blocking.

"Was he high?  'Cause I don't see Rico as anyone's boyfriend."  Not that

"It's just not fair!  Jacob gets to be everything I couldn't be to keep
everything I liked about my life and because of me he just gets happily

"Okay, here's what you do. You tell Rico you appreciate the thought but
you're past everything he's worried about.  Tell him Jacob being new and
such a flamer, he needs protection more than you ever did."  Joey gets the
evil grin we share.  We get it from our moms.  "Worst case?  They both get
new best friends.  Best case?  Rico screws up Jacob's gaydar too and comes
on to him.  Rico gets freaked out and stops thinking about being a gay
guy's bodyguard and Jacob gets a punch in the nose that keeps him from
being so uppity."

"Stefan, you are an evil genius."  Rico's the next to show up but I ask him
about his brother Todd before he can escape.  Todd's another sore point for
poor Joey.  Joey's like one of the best wrestlers in his weight ever in the
state but Todd who's a year younger than us snagged a part on a soap two
years ago.  Todd plays the bad seed son of the soap's leading couple.  Joey
could set himself on fire and his parents would tell him about Todd's
latest fan award or great scene before putting the fire out.  I normally
don't mention baby bro to Joey but he hasn't answered an email in two
months and that's not like Todd.  "No one's supposed to know but Todd's
been doing a Disney Channel movie on his days off.  He barely has time to
eat and sleep!"

"I thought Todd didn't want to be a big star.  Didn't he keep saying the
soap was perfect 'cause he could act as much as the state would allow every
week instead of doing more waiting than acting on a movie?"

"Yeah but people kept after him 'cause he's supposedly the second most
popular actor on his soap.  What convinced was them saying if he had star
power he could pick and choose his parts."  Yeah, that would work on Todd.
Aunt Mary told me Todd had bought a theatre in town and was planning on
performing there if that's all he had on offer after the soap part
eventually ended.  Acting really is the thing Todd cares about, not fame or
wealth.  "Todd is a good kid.  It's Dad and Mom idolizing him and ignoring
me that makes me nuts, not him.  You know he'll be home all of December,
right?  Swears he has surprises planned we'll both love."  Jacob's here now
too so Joey sets off to start my plan with Rico.  Eddie and most of the
rest of the class dribble in right before the bell rings.

"His name's Lito," is how Eddie, my Eddie, says hi when we all take seats.
I know who he means.  "He likes to be called Diego but I guess there's too
many Diegos so they use his middle name."

"How'd you find out?  I struck out with asking around and looking at old
yearbooks."

"'Cause he's a Senior 'cross town.  You should have asked Ana in between
rocking her world.  I described him to her and it turns out he knocked up
her cousin and bolted.  Not the first time he's done it either."

"So he's an asshole to women too."  Fits with what little of his character
we saw.

"I think we know why with Maribel and that other chick, don't we?"  I blush
and am real glad Mister Woods starts talking.  It's your standard first day
lecture of plans for the year but with more detail than needed.  Like I
said, new guy.  I'm not the only one uncomfortable that sexuality is going
to be the major theme.  Mister Woods even hands out a questionaire.  He
wants total honesty so each is in an envelope that can seal so no one else
in class will see them and even he won't know who wrote what.

I look around the room and I don't seem like the only one a little freaked
out.  The Terror Twins look to be the only ones not hunched over keeping
everyone else from seeing what they're writing.  Even Eddie next to me does
that and I know exactly what kind of wild sex he's had.

the campus.

Eddie finishes first and I get a text saying 'Mrs. Broome's extra supply
