Background Information

The family is back but a lot of time has passed between Unexpected Five
Years On and these new chapters. You might want to reread the final
chapter(s) of Unexpected Five Years On. I need some chapters to start this
story and establish new characters and revisit old ones. In this story,
things start to really happen in Chapter 3, 4 and especially 5. However, I
think that you will enjoy Chapters 1 and 2; I personally really enjoyed
writing Chapters 1 and 2. Don't be put off by these first couple of
chapters or the main character as we first meet him in Chapters 1 and 2.

For those who speak French, I did try to get the French accents correctly
but it didn't work. I don't have a French keyboard on my computer.

There may be some spaces between paragraphs. The chapter ends when you can
see the list of my previous stories

Present

"Dad ... Dad are you there? We have to get moving. It's my first day and I
don't want to be late. This is a real job. They hired me and need me in
your IT department. Dad are you with me? You know your IT department. The
firm that you own and run with Uncle David. Well with the watchful eyes of
Grandpa Jamie."

Jeremy had been sitting at the breakfast table day dreaming. He knew that
his son was there and he had even muttered some responses to the
conversation. But here was his son graduated from high school about to
start a summer job at The Accountants which he had been interviewed for and
had won. Little wonder, he had won both the math prize and computer prize
at the same high school where he himself had won the math prize so many
years ago. Jamie had presented it to him then and last week, Jeremy had
held back the tears but not the look of pride as he had presented the two
prizes to his son.

"OK, caught the old man day dreaming. Right, you don't want to make a bad
impression, give someone on staff a chance to say that you were taking
advantage of your Dad there to protect you. You are on your own. Don't
forget that I am Mr. Marchese-Milner or Boss and David is not Uncle David."

Jeremy stopped. "Where's Papa?"

"Oh he took a call from work earlier. He is still on the phone. Some crazy
crisis. How can the top law firm in the city have a crisis? So early in the
morning!"

From the hallway, "You really don't want the details." Timothy came into
the room. "Well, doesn't our guy look spiffy. You'd think he had a new job
and wanted to impress the ladies at work."

"Papa, how many times do I have say it; Anna is enough for me. However, she
is going to be away for most of the summer and we are going to different
out of town universities. Hmm. Maybe I better check myself in the
mirror. Thanks Papa for the reminder." He ran out and up to his
bathroom. The exuberance of youth. When he came down, they could smell the
slight scent that hadn't been there previously.

They arrived at work. Jeremy let Robert run ahead of him so that they
didn't enter at the same time. Jeremy chuckled as he watched him walk
briskly up to the front door. Where had the years gone? There was a 6' 2"
young man almost running up the stairs. He had straw coloured hair and
broad shoulders with bulging muscles from his work outs with the hockey
team at school and working construction with Grandad Philipo's Marchese
Construction Company. Philipo had taken over after Pops' heart attack. Pops
was convinced, no threatened by Momma in no uncertain terms, that he was
retiring. You still couldn't stop Momma. Jeremy smiled to himself.

"Morning boss. Did you see that new hire who ran in a few minutes ago. I
phoned IT and they told me to send him down. He didn't need directions."

"I guess they told him or he remembered from his interview."

"By the way David wants to see you and James is not coning in today. He has
a lecture to give at the university."

James Milner had a become a frequent guest lecturer at several
universities. His leadership skills and the rise of his firm, The
Accountants, as one of the best in the province was the subject of many
presentations and articles. It didn't hurt that Jeremy was known
internationally in North America and in Europe for his large number of
articles on forensic accounting that he had published. He and Michael
Burtchell gave many addresses and shared the platform many times over the
years. Michael was, like Jamie, slowly retiring from his firm but he too
kept his hand in and was still publishing and presenting. His partner,
Stephen, had retired as Head of the Economics Department but still taught
the odd first year or senior class. He liked the challenge.

The day passed quickly and during the day, Jeremy had seen Robert at a
distance laughing and joking with the junior members of the IT staff. It
looked as if he fitted in well. As arranged, Jeremy had gone to the car at
5:15. A minute later, Robert jumped quickly into his Dad's car. Jeremy
smiled, "Well how did it go? Any bright insights?"

"Dad, I am not stupid. I kept my head down. Not smart to try and shine the
first day. In fact, I learned a lot. A bright group. I asked a lot of
questions and they gave me a couple of easy jobs. I didn't do them too
fast; they were pretty simple but I did what I am paid for."

Jeremy chuckled. He loved the enthusiasm and insights of his son. He
watched him with the hockey team when they had parties at their house. He
was an obvious leader on the team. He and Timothy had kept the tradition
that Jamie and Philipo had started. Their home was always open to his
friends and this year, their last time together as a team, was the final
party at their place. Everyone knew the rules, no alcohol or drugs but lots
of computers and card games with lots of food and no dates.

Jeremy and Timothy loved those nights. They would sit in the kitchen or
their little back room while guys joked, yelled in mock surprise when they
won or lost. Often some of the quieter guys would come in and talk about
life and their futures. Over the years, they had had some very private
conversations about their orientation chatting very discretely with young
guys who were nervous and worried about their own feelings about love and
life.

On Friday, Robert had the day off. That night was the Grad Dance. The
school had kept the tradition of inviting parents for an hour or so before
the graduation dinner and dance to meet friends.

Jeremy and Timothy arrived at the hotel at the given time and chatted with
staff and students they knew. Robert had arrived with Anna and with his
best friends from the team and some clubs that he belonged to. In fact, one
couple was two guys who were dating. Robert had joined the gay and lesbian
club; he told anyone who asked that he believed in it and wanted to
celebrate his dads. He had a few troubled moments with less convinced
members of the team but he was a team leader, a leading scorer and a big
guy. There had been some scenes but eventually everyone accepted his
decision.

Looking at the group, both Jeremy and Timothy realized what a good looking,
talented young man they had the privilege to call son. Anna was
radiant. The two looked good together. Timothy, always the one to see
small things that Jeremy sometimes missed, commented on the way home that
Robert and Anna looked close but somehow slightly apart. As was often the
case, they were to find out in the next days that he was correct.

Robert had immediately spotted Jeremy and Timothy and had come over to them
and got his handshake and hug. For over an hour, Timothy and Jeremy laughed
and joked with the group. They knew his friends well and they asked and
heard with interest their plans for the summer and the fall. It was a
wonderful way to be with the guys whom they had known so long.

Finally, when the announcement was made to take their seats in the dining
area, they said their goodbyes. As they left, it struck them that their
life was going to change. No hustle and bustle of Robert and his
friends. They heard the talk and plans of moving to new cities at their
universities of choice. Anna in particular seemed elated with her
scholarship at a university hundreds of kilometres from where Robert would
be. Robert seemed equally upbeat about his university and its very well
known hockey team which he would try out for.

As they walked to their car, it was Timothy who put his arm around his
guy. "Look at it this way, we have had him for 18 years. In my wildest
dreams I never realized how much that decision that we made after talking
to Father Gregory would mean to me. Come on husband let's go home, I have
some things to say to you tonight and not just words."

"I would never have realized that after almost 19 years together that you
could turn me on with such simple words."

"And you used to call me a horny bugger."

As they did so often, they turned and kissed. It was almost indecently long
but neither cared. Their son was growing up but they still had each other.

They arrived home. Timothy had hidden a bottle of good champagne in the
basement refrigerator. He looked at his guy when the flutes were full and
bubbling. "To our guy, to you my love. I still have you."

It was Jeremy who had moisture in his eyes. "To our son and to us." The
kiss was gentle.

They knew that it was an all night party. They suspected that at sometime
that night their guy and Anna would probably lie together and say important
things to each other and seal the words with actions just as they were
doing.

Jeremy had slowly undressed Timothy who then had done the honours for
Jeremy. They marveled that they still wore the same size clothes. They were
still lean and their exercise program kept them in top shape. They still
played football. They water skied and went on annual trips to the ski hills
in the US or Quebec. Jeremy had become an excellent downhill skier as
Timothy had predicted that June so many years before. Tonight it was quiet
and slow, savouring the taste and smell of the other. They knew that they
had the house to themselves. They knew each others bodies so well but
somehow it always felt fresh and new.

With small gestures and noises, they the communicated who would do what to
the other and many minutes later, they were in the throws of a climax that
left them breathless and knowing that there would be more tomorrow morning.

The next morning, they had just finished what they had started the evening
before when they heard the front door open. Luckily the grad dance had been
on a Friday so they were there to greet him. They quickly put on shorts and
robes and went down to welcome their guy home.

What a different sight from the previous evening. Robert had taken some
pants, a shirt and sweater to change into and his tuxedo was over his arm
with the wilted flower still in the lapel. His hair was slightly mussed and
he needed a shave. There were circles under his eyes and he was
yawning. The guys started to laugh. "Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Just
can't keep up the fast life."

Almost wistfully, "Oh, it was a great night but it is a chapter ended. I
know that I will keep some of the guys as friends but it hit me that we are
all moving all over the place. Anna leaves for the cottage in a few days
and I probably won't see her again until I don't know when. Well, we are
going out for dinner together on the night before she leaves but .... She
is coming back to pack a couple of days after we leave for Europe. Then she
is off to visit relatives and to get settled in her residence." He sighed
and shrugged.

It was Timothy who went over and pulled him close. Timothy had learned from
the Marchese family that sometimes being hugged and held tight said it
all. Jeremy had been the one who played exuberantly with their son on the
floor but it was Timothy who would often just hold him and talk to him
quietly when things were bothering him. Timothy felt the little extra
pressure from Robert's arms, a small word of thanks.

Jeremy had heard the very quiet words of comfort in French from Timothy as
he had held his son. In the first year when they adopted him, they both
spoke French to him. When he started to speak, they changed. Timothy only
spoke French to Robert and Jeremy, English. When they had friends in for
meals in the early years, they were mystified by how Robert could switch
between languages. So it was even now, Timothy and his son always spoke in
French to each other. Jeremy heard the words of comfort and the reminder
that the summer job and the next year at university would be great
experiences.

It was their resilient son, who finally separated from Timothy. "Merci,
Papa." He immediately went over and hugged Jeremy. "Thanks Dad for coming
last night. The guys loved talking to you two. You know we have changed a
lot of minds. The guys think that you and Papa are the best." He looked at
the two. He paused dramatically. "And I need some sleep."

The guys chuckled. One said, "Va mon fils, bons rêves." The other
said it in the other language. "Go my son, sweet dreams."

As he headed up the stairs, Timothy looked at Jeremy. "We knew that these
days would come. Wait 'tll we actual drop him off at his university and say
goodbye then."

He looked at Timothy and started to chuckle. "I remember the day that you
registered him at his first school for Junior Kindergarten. I had seen you
operate before on the day your father had his stroke, 'I am in charge, not
you, not mother, not Jeremy ... me'. That poor Directrice Adjointe (Vice
Principal) didn't have a chance. " By this time Jeremy was laughing.

Continuing, "You and the Directrice had signed the papers and they were
with her secretary for processing. I came into her office late after some
problem at work. The Directrice looked at me oddly; you know, who are you?
What are you doing here? You calmly said that you would like to introduce
your husband. I can see now the look of surprise and almost horror. What
was it she said? Oh yes that our relationship was against church teachings
and not acceptable in the school. You looked at her and told her that that
we were registering our son, not you and me. She muttered something about
what would other parents think and say and the other children in his class?
Then you explained what would happen if the papers were not processed: a
case of discrimination would be launched against her and the Board. You
calmly thought about it and said that maybe just letters to the Board and
to the press first. I saw first hand again what Mme. Chenier and your first
staff saw several times in your offices."

Still shaking his head, he pulled his guy to him and kissed him. They were
so engrossed in themselves that they suddenly heard from a very visible son
who had forgotten something downstairs, "Oh they never stop. They are at it
again."

They attacked their son, Jeremy with a headlock and Timothy giving his head
a rub with his knuckles. They all dissolved in a fit of laughter.

Robert had his sleep and when he woke up, he decided that he would look at
some of the work that they might give him at The Accountants. He had asked
the Head what he might be expected to do. He spent a lot of the day doing
searches on topics and especially on computers and forensic accounting. It
turned out to be very interesting.

Sunday came and everyone in the house knew that Robert and Anna were going
out for dinner that night, the last time they would see each other, as he
had said, for they knew not how long. Between searching the internet for
his work the next day at The Accountants, he had mulled over in his mind
what he would say to Anna about their distance apart and the fact that they
would not see each other for months. The more he thought, the more he
realized what he would have to do for both of them. He listed all his
reasons in his mind. He groomed himself well and he dressed for the
occasion.

As he left the house, of course Papa and Dad were there to see him off. It
was strange how close they were and yet how often they didn't talk about
some issues. He knew that he had to make up his own mind on a lot
things. But he had their example as well as Momma and Pops and especially
Grandpa Jamie and Grandad Philipo.

Obviously Anna had dressed for the occasion as well. He talked to her
parents who really liked him and he, them. He had kept the name of the
restaurant secret. She would have objected to the cost. Now that he knew
what he was going to say, he felt it was exactly where they should go. In
the car on the way to the restaurant, they chatted about the last couple of
days and how much sleep they had to have the next day after the party.

"Robbie, you shouldn't have. This is way too expensive."

"That's why I kept it a secret. I knew what you would say. My Dads tell me
that the food is excellent and good value for this type of service and
cuisine. Let's enjoy it. I have saved some money from my job and
investments and I am being well paid at The Accountants and by Grandad
Philipo."

He told her not to look at the prices but to order what she really
wanted. They couldn't have alcohol but Anna and he had non alcoholic
cocktails. They talked about the dance and the year at school. Robert
noticed that there were no references to the next year.

The dinner was over and they were having a coffee and some really good
pastries.

Robert decided that now was the time. "Anna, you know, we have avoided one
topic for the last weeks." He looked at her softly. "You know we won't see
each other now for 2 or 3 months, probably more. You are going to be in a
tough program as I shall be as well. I hope that I'll be on the hockey
team. We are going to be busy."

Anna tried to speak but he went on. "I know that you are really excited
about your program and the university itself. I have heard that there is a
really good social life there. I want you to enjoy every aspect of
university. I want you to be free to be able do anything that you want." He
held up his hand. "You are one of the brightest, hottest women that I have
ever seen or met." His eyes started to fill up.

"Robbie are you breaking up with me?"

"Yes, no. Damn, I am trying to realistic. I know that I don't even want to
think of you with another guy but there are going to be lots of bright,
good looking guys who will look at you and pursue you and one of them may
click with you and you with him. I don't want you to feel guilty; I don't
want to worry about that telephone call or email that I might get. I am
going to be so damn busy that I won't know what day it is. Can we leave it
like that; we'll see each other over Christmas, get caught up and be
truthful with each other."

"OK, I have to admit that I have been trying to work this out over the last
while. I have looked up long distance relationships and the feeling is that
they often don't work. But Robbie we have something really special
together." She reached over and they held hands over the table. There were
tears in both their eyes.

"We have and still do but ...."

"Why can't you just be like most teenage males and just go hook up with
someone and not tell me."

"Because you don't deserve that and that's not what I am saying."

"Please pay the bill. I don't want it to end like this, here."

They composed themselves and he left a good tip. Thought crossed his mind
that he was to have work quite a few hours to pay for this evening.

The atmosphere changed. Both seemed slightly relieved that Robbie had taken
the first step. Anna grabbed his hand and she pulled herself close to him
as they walked to the car.

"I wish we could go somewhere"

"No, I want to remember grad night, you and me, our special time, alone
together. It was wonderful, magical. You are one of the most beautiful
people that I have ever met. You are leaving tomorrow and 'somewhere' would
be an awful memory."

They were driving to her home. "I think that you are one of the most
remarkable men. I can see so much of your dads in you. Charming, caring,
thoughtful and so bright."

They arrived at her house. They kissed. It was both passionate and yet
bitter sweet at the same time. He walked her to the door.

Robert, "Have a great summer. Have a great first term. Enjoy it all to the
full. See you in December." Final kiss and he was off.

He drove around a bit and even sat in a parking lot for a few moments. Had
he done the right thing? Was he throwing the love of his life away? No, it
was for the best for both of them. If it was meant to be it would be again
if not ....

Timothy picked up his son's mood quickly after a couple of questions. He
grabbed him and sat him beside. "Dis Papa (tell Papa)."

Robert knew that it was not an order but a way to start. Quietly in French,
he told his Papa what he had done. For a while, he felt like a little kid
telling his Papa his deepest feelings. It felt so good to have those arms
around him. Finally, there were tears.

Timothy held him closer. Talking softly, "You have done the hardest but
maybe the wisest thing in your life so far. I had a relationship in my
second year of university with a guy. It seemed perfect but one day, he
came back and told me that it was over. He had met someone else. I was so
low for so long after. You and Anna have chosen a time when you are making
a break and a new start. You are so smart. You put her first. She is
gorgeous and very bright. She will be approached by many guys. You'll
wonder some lonely nights but perhaps in fact, you will find someone that
you click with. She may look different and have different interests but she
will mesh with you. As usual, you told her that you will meet at Christmas
and be honest. That goes for you as well."

"Dad, there were times as I drove home tonight that I figured I would never
meet anyone like her again in my life."

"My prediction. Maybe not this year but you will meet your soulmate. You
know that your Grandpa used to say to your Dad, some time, some place,
someone will be there for you. It took us a long time and I can tell you
that it was worth the wait."

Tears mixed with laughter, "Papa, you are such a sop but I know you are
right and so was I today but it hurts."

"It does. To use the old vernacular, sometimes life sucks." They sat like
that for a while, no words just love and comfort.

Earlier, Jeremy had come towards the living room and he heard some of the
muttered words. He quietly retraced his steps. His guy was doing what all
parents want do for their kids, giving love and comfort.

He heard Robert say 'merci Papa' and bound up the stairs. Jeremy stuck his
head around the corner to see his love finally letting his own tears flow.

In a bound, it was his turn to wrap his arms around his guy and hold him
tight. He only muttered a few of words. "Tell me when you can."

Later as they climbed into bed, Jeremy, "We really do have an amazing son
and he has an amazing Papa."

No more was spoken but a lot was told in the age old way.

After all that had happened that weekend, breakfast was the usual search
for cereal, drink the dark, fragrant coffee and mutter words about that day
and plans for the evening. Nothing was said about Anna's immanent
departure. It was talk about work, drives, arrival and departure times at
work and what was for supper. Yes really exciting stuff but it was what
they needed on that day.

Jeremy did manage to slip in that he had started a list of the sites which
he wanted to see in Paris in August. He could see that that caused a
glimmer of interest in Robert's eyes and Robert said that was a good idea
to start early. He also said he hoped that Dad would choose some
interesting sites. Timothy had muttered 'trosième étage de la
tour Eiffel (third level of the Eiffel Tower). That got more than a
glimmer. The two dads smiled at each other.

They had in fact planned a lot for the summer. There were a number of
weekends at the Malenfant chalet and that was on for the next weekend which
happened to coincide with the July 1 celebrations. The Malenfant clan had
kept that tradition going. Robert had heard the story of his Papa's
'outing' to grand-pere too many times and started to pretend to yawn
anytime it was mentioned. As the families grew so did the property. There
were now two small cabins at the back that could house each family. His
cousin, Luc, had grown to be a solid young man who still loved his Uncl
Jermy and Uncl Timty and there was always an exuberant meeting between him
and Robert.

Robert loved it there. He was in almost a total French milieu and he fitted
in and he was especially loved by grand-pere Malenfant. Robert and Luc had
built up a very special relationship with grand-pere and with each
other. It always amazed Jeremy how his son fitted in here and then with
Momma who loved him dearly. He too was one who could 'deal' with Momma in
the tradition of Jamie and himself.

The July 1st party was large and boisterous. Robert joined in talking to
all his relatives and friends of the family who joined them. It was obvious
to all that he enjoyed this. He helped grand-mere with getting the food and
serving it. She remembered that first time that Jeremy visited on July
1. He too insisted on helping and he had mingled with the guests. She was
so happy with the family that they had around them.

It was Sunday morning water skiing, "Not bad Papa." He said that as Timothy
jumped out of the boat. Robert had driven while Timothy had put on a good
display of acrobatics on skis. He still had it. Now it was Robert's turn.

Timothy's reaction to his son's assessment of his display, "Not bad! Wait
'til I get you up and see what you can do. Maybe some sharp turns by the
boat and see how you handle that." His son laughed at him.

Timothy was driving the boat now and Jeremy was in the rear watching the
skier. He saw his son behind the boat with the bar in this hand, his skis
were slanted up with the tips out of the water. Robert gave the signal that
he was ready. Timothy heard and he pushed the throttle slowly to half
speed. Jeremy and Timothy, as he quickly looked back, saw the strong arms
of their son tighten as the rope went taut and with grace, he pulled
himself up as he came out of the water with ease. Timothy increased the
speed as Robert sped through the water. Again they saw a powerfully built
man straining on the rope with a huge smile of joy on his
face. Amazing. Then the tricks that he had learned with power and grace; he
did trick after trick. Each time smiling and shouting with
pleasure. Finally Timothy signaled his turn into the bay where he made a
perfect dismount.

Timothy came in slowly to dock the boat. When Timothy stepped out of the
boat, there was an expectant look on his son's face. "Eh bien (well)?"'

"Pas trop pire, mon fils (not too bad, son)."

Almost in outrage, "Quoi (what)?" They all broke out laughing.

Timothy grabbed his kid in a headlock and said for the first time that day
in English. "Don't get too cocky and sure of yourself but pretty damn
good." They bumped fists.

Luc had done just as well and the two cousins went up the hill talking
animatedly about their skiing exploits that day.

The day ended with a camp fire on the beach. For the first time, he sat
dreamily on the beach with the fire's warmth and soft conversation around
him. In his mind, Robert had drifted off and he felt the phantom, Anna,
come up close to him. She put her hand on his naked thigh and then go a
little farther until she was rubbing her fingers along his growing cock. He
had to cover himself with his hands. He mentally moaned, "Ah fuck."

That night in bed by himself, he finished himself quietly as his mind
replayed the scene the evening after the grad dance. They lay together
naked, touching each other in their most private and sensitive areas. He
was kneeling over her and he entered her. He ended spilling over his naked
torso as he had finished in her, filling the condom in an overwhelming,
explosive climax. He fell asleep with a sense of loss for the first
time. Neither he nor Anna had sent any emails since she had left the city.

I have had some feedback from some readers who were trying to read some of
my previous stories. If you go to Authors on Nifty and find my name, when
you try to access Surprised Eric and Dave from the Authors list, it doesn't
connect to anything. Surprised Graham and Robert is just not there. If you
want to read them, use the date and category, Adult-Friends or Beginnings
etc. and go the appropriate category and date and they are there and
active.

If you liked this story, you might want to read the others that I have
published on Nifty. In particular, my first story, Unexpected Change which
has had the most positive comments and one of my other favourites, What a
Difference a Year Makes. I have recently reread Introspection and it is
worth a read, Michail Burtchell's story is in Discoveries; its ending is a
little weak but getting there is fun.
