Accidents will Happen

Chapter 22

With Dylan gone from the trauma room, I looked around at the empty space
and the people occupying it. It felt like there were a thousand eyes
trying to burn their way into me. I felt constricted and suddenly and
inexplicably claustrophobic.

"Come on Dan let's get you out of here" Roger said as he put his arm around
me and led me from the trauma room.

As we walked through the trauma room and out in to reception it felt as if
the heating had been switched off completely, I felt cold and started to
shiver. The shock of what I had just been through was now beginning to
settle in.

"Dan, Dan" called Cassie as I walked through the reception.

"Cassie now is not a good time" Roger replied in a tone that scolded.

"I am sorry Roger but there is a woman in the relative's room who asked
directly for Dan, she says she's the mother of the young boy brought in to
the trauma room."

"Oh my God" I whispered to myself. In all of the time I'd spent working on
Dylan I hadn't given one thought to Jane, I didn't even ask if she was here
or even knew about Dylan. I was suddenly and completely engulfed with
guilt as the thought of her sat in the room thinking the worst, in the same
hospital in which her husband had died, sprang vividly into my mind.

"Roger, I must go to her, she'll be frantic." I said. "Has anyone spoken
to her since she's been here Cassie?" I asked.

"No one Dan, she's been in there on her own for about 20 minutes" Replied
Cassie.

"Dan I really think I should talk to her, you're not in any fit state to
talk to a relative" Roger said looking at me straight in the eyes knowing
he wasn't going to win this argument.

"No Roger, this is more than that, this is personal, we both are going
through the same thing, and I need to talk to her."

"Ok Dan but remember you're still a Doctor of this hospital and represent
it so be careful what you say" Roger cautioned as I walked towards the
room.

"Really Roger?" I said as I turned to face him. "That's the most important
thing going on here, really?" Roger's face flushed at my rebuke but in
embarrassment not anger.

"I'm sorry Dan, it's not so easy separating personal from business" he said
in a soft apologetic tone. Of course I knew he was right in what he was
saying but the timing sucked. I got to the door of the room, took a deep
breath, opened it and walked in.

Jane was sat at the end of the room, staring out of the window at the
white, snow covered trees. She looked gaunt and tired her cheeks red from
where she had obviously been crying. My heart pained for her and the
misery she must be going through as I knew the heartache she was feeling.
As I closed the door behind me the noise of the lock clicking tripped her
from her daze.

"Oh my God Dan" she said as she saw me standing in front of her. Her lips
quivered and her eyes filled with tears as I stood there not saying
anything, feeling my own eyes start to well.

I moved forward and sat next to her on the shabby grey sofa. "Jane, Dylan
is alive but he's in a serious, possible life threatening condition" I
started my voice cracking with the emotion of the situation. I coughed
trying to get control of myself as Jane placed her hand on mine and
squeezed, sensing how difficult I was finding it to talk. "He's up in
surgery now, he has a badly broken leg and collar bone, a nasty cut to the
head, a collapsed lung and we think he has some internal bleeding but are
not sure how much and from where."

All the time I had been listing Dylan's injuries tears had been silently
running down my cheeks. "We're not sure if there is any damage to the
brain, the cut to his head is superficial but we need to look out for
swelling and bleeding after a blunt force trauma to the head. I'm sorry I
can't give you better news Jane truly I am, Dylan was in very bad shape
when he arrived and we had to work fast to save him." That last sentence
sent me over the edge and the tears turned in to a flood.

Jane lent forward, wrapped her arms around me and hugged me. "Oh Dan it
must have been terrible to have seen Dylan like that, I am so thankful
though that you were there, he loves you so much and having you there
treating him, he would have known you were there. He's a fighter Dan,
always has been, he'll pull through."

I pulled myself together and looked Jane in the eyes. "Jane I believe that
too however Dylan has a long way to go before he is out of danger. The
next 24 to 36 hours are crucial. Do you have any questions that I might be
able to answer? " I asked.

"Do you what happened Dan? I thought Dylan was at your house with you and
then I get a phone call from the Police saying he'd been in an accident and
was on his way here. I asked if he was on his own and they said it was
just him."

"I don't know Jane. I got called in here this morning because of the high
influx of patients due to the snow and left Dylan in bed. I asked if he
wanted a lift home on my way in but he said he didn't and that he was
staying in bed and if he needed a ride he would call you to come get him.
All I know is he was involved in a road traffic accident and came in with
serious injuries."

At that moment there was a knock on the door and Cassie stuck her head in.
"Sorry to intrude, do either of you need anything, coffee or tea perhaps?"
I could tell by the look Cassie gave me that she knew the situation, the
whole hospital probably did by now, and she was doing her best to be
helpful.

"Two teas would be great Cassie thank you" I replied smiling at her.

"Ok no problems, two teas coming up" she replied trying to sound perky and
cheerful. "Also Dan sorry can I just have a word with you outside please"
she continued.

"Sure Cassie, sorry Jane give me two minutes will you" I said standing up
and heading towards the door. I closed the door behind me leaving Jane.
"What's up Cassie?"

"There's a cop over there that needs to speak with Jane but I wouldn't let
him in until I'd spoken with you to make sure Dylan's mom was ok." Cassie
paused taking in an audible deep breath. "I'm so sorry Dan, poor Dylan"
she said, flinging her arms around me giving me a supportive hug.

"Thanks Cassie, I appreciate your support" I said giving her a gentle
squeeze in the hug. "I'll talk to the cop now and see what he wants"
