Accidents will Happen

Chapter 26

Jane and I headed out the door followed by Officer Sharp. "Can I accompany
you to see Dylan please, I have some questions I need to ask him" asked the
officer.

"Can it wait please officer" responded Jane, "I don't think he'll be in any
state to answer questions and I'd rather it was Dan and I that were there
when he woke up."

"No problems Mrs. Henderson I completely understand. I have some other
enquiries to carry out so maybe I'll come back later, although I need to
speak to him sooner rather than later."

"That's very kind of you" Jane replied flashing a smile at Officer Sharp.

Jane and I walked off leaving the Police officer in the reception area
speaking in to his radio.

"Hey Cassie, what room is Dylan in?" I asked as I passed her desk.

"Ahh let me check, hmmm, ah here it is, he's in room 462, fourth floor."

"Thanks Cassie. Come on Jane lets grab the elevator and get ourselves up
there" I said sounding like a kid encouraging a sibling downstairs on
Christmas morning.

We got in to the elevator and I pressed the button for our floor.

"Jane you need to prepare yourself for what Dylan is going to look like,
he's going to have his leg in plaster, head bandaged and several sets of
stitches around his body. On top of that his body is going to look bruised
and swollen from the trauma of the accident and the surgery." "Oh Dan I
don't care what he looks like, he's alive and that's all that matters.
Will he be awake when we get there?"

"If he is he'll be very groggy from the anesthetic and the pain killers
they're likely giving him. But he should recognize us if he's awake and he
might even be able to string a few words together."

"You mean we'll be able to get a word in" Jane said with a laugh that
turned in to a cry. "What if I'd lost him Dan, then what? He's all I have
in my life and I was a whisker away from losing him." I put my arms around
her and hugged her close, knowing that she needed reassurance not empty
words.

"Jane, Dylan made it through for a reason, if he had one ounce of strength
left is body he would use it to ensure he didn't leave you. Do you
remember the day I called you after he came of his bike?" Jane nodded
wiping her tears with a tissue and briefly smiling.

"Well he was distraught when he noticed you had called him and he hadn't
answered. The thought of you worrying at home not sure where he was or if
something had happened to him upset his greatly and then when I called you
and he heard the questions you asked and the worry in your voice he cried
so hard. Don't tell him I told you though, I promised him I wouldn't say a
word about it! But never ever forget Jane he loves you with every molecule
of his being, you are the reason he survived."

"God you Doctors are so clinical" she said laughing.

"What? What did I say?" I asked bemused.

"Every molecule of his being?. Sheesh!!" she said gently elbowing me in the
ribs and smiling broadly. "Thanks Dan, I really appreciate your support
and it really means a lot to me that Dylan has found someone who cares so
deeply for him. We're both lucky to have you in our lives."

"Don't you start that slushy stuff or you'll have me crying" I said
starting to tear up. The moment was suddenly interrupted by the sound of
the bell telling us we had reached our floor. The doors to the elevator
slid open and we both exited. "Right room 462 is down this way" I said
pointing towards a set of double doors.

The fourth floor housed the critical care unit and like most places in the
hospital had a reception area you had to sign in at before heading down to
the rooms.

"Hello, Dr. Thomson and Mrs. Henderson to see Dylan Henderson" I said
trying to sound official. "I think he's in room 462." The receptionist
looked at her screen tapped a few buttons on her keyboard and looked up at
us.

"Yes Dr. Thomson 462, down the corridor there, half way down on the left.
Mrs. Henderson, I just need you to sign in here please." Jane quickly
signed in and we hurried off down to Dylan's room. I reached for the
handle to the door and took a deep breath before walking in. As we both
walked in I was greeted by one of the surgeons who had operated on Dylan.

"Hey Dan, twice in one day this patient must be special." Steve Blake said.
I looked up and blushed.

"Yeah pretty damn special Steve" I said. "Steve this is Jane Henderson,
Dylan's mother, Jane this is Dr. Steven Blake he was Dylan's lead surgeon."

Steve held out his hand to Jane and she shook it warmly "Pleased to meet
you Ma'am, you have a very strong boy there; he fought hard on the table
today."

"No Dr. Blake thank you, if it weren't for you I'm not sure Dylan would be
around today."

"Don't forget the ER doctors Mrs. Henderson, people like Dan here are the
guys that get them through the first stage so they are ready for surgery.
Without him and his team today Dylan wouldn't have made it up to surgery."

"Oh I know how much Dan does every day for Dylan Dr. Blake, he saves him
every day. So how is Dylan doing?"

"Well ma'am he's doing just fine, it was a little scary early on but he did
good and he's all patched up. I've put him on some strong analgesia and
some antibiotics to combat any infections from his wounds but he should be
fully conscious within the next 24 hours. He's obviously up to his hip in
plaster and that's going to need to stay on for at least 12 weeks but we'll
refer him to Orthopedics for regular checkups. He'll probably find most
discomfort from the stitches and his clavicle. There isn't much you can do
about a fractured clavicle apart from restricting movement."

Jane looked at me and silently mouthed "what's a clavicle?"

I leant forward and whispered in her ear "His collar bone."

Steve finished up his assessment of Dylan, excused himself and left. Dylan
looked how I expected him to look but it none the less saddened me to see
my gorgeous boyfriend in such a terrible state. I walked over to his bed,
picked up his hand in mine and tenderly kissed him on the lips.

"Glad you came back to me baby" I whispered in his ear. "You're mom's here
too, we're both here for you." I was lightly stroking Dylan's hand as I
whispered in his ear, I finished talking and felt him gently squeeze my
hand. It was the sort of squeeze that Dylan would give my hand to tell me
he loved me, the sort of squeeze he would give when we laid in bed, moments
before we drifted off to sleep and couldn't speak, the sort of squeeze that
made my heart jump and skip a beat. I smiled happily both inside and out as
I squeezed back, planted another gentle kiss on his lips and let go.
"Here's your mom baby."
