Accidents will Happen

Chapter 31

I got to the car park but couldn't see Sharp or even a vehicle that looked
like a cop car. Disappointed I headed back in to the hospital and back to
the relatives room. I opened the door and walked in, Jimmy was still sat
there his face a picture of fear and hurt.

"Jimmy, why would your brother think Dylan was dead?"

Jimmy's eyes dropped to the floor and the tears started to flow again. "I
don't know why he would think that" he whispered.

"Jimmy you need to be upfront with me, Dylan's accident hasn't even made
the news yet how would your brother know about it?"

Jimmy looked up at me, his face bruised from his black eyes and the tears
welling on his lids before trickling down his face. "I don't know."

I didn't want to push him anymore as he was obviously scared out of his
wits. "Hey Jimmy, you wanna go with me to see Dylan?" I asked trying to
break the tension in the room.

"Oh that would be so cool, can we go see him?"

"Sure but let me just clean you up a little first, I don't want Dylan
seeing you bleeding." I spent the next ten minutes cleaning Jimmy's wounds
and chatting. "Jimmy how did all this really happen and remember I'm a
doctor so I know how injuries happen?"

Jimmy went quiet and I could almost feel him withdraw in to himself.
"Promise you won't tell?"

"I am bound by Doctor patient confidentiality Jimmy unless your life or the
life of someone else is at risk, so you can trust me."

"It was my brother, he saw me hanging around with Dylan and knew that he
was gay, so when I told him I was gay too he beat me and screamed at me
that Dylan had corrupted me and he'd beat the gay out of me."

I stood there stunned at the revelation. "Does he hit you often Jimmy?"

"Not before I started to hang around with Dylan. He'd hit me occasionally
when he was drunk but never like he did this last time. My Pop had to pull
him off me and he stormed out and went missing for a few days, he quite
often goes missing like that. This time he was real mad, I mean he was
shouting so hard at me I could feel his spit on my face. I thought he was
gonna kill me. And when he came back from his missing period that's when
he told me Dylan was dead. I didn't wait to find out any more from him, he
just said that I could be straight now that my little fag friend was dead
after he'd been in a nasty accident. That's why I raced down here, this
was the only place I could think of coming."

All the time Jimmy had been talking he'd not once looked at me, his eyes
firmly rooted the patch of floor in front of his feet.

"Ok fella looks like you're cleaned up, let's get you up to see Dylan, he
was sleeping so may be asleep when you get up there."

"Thank you so much and I don't care if he's asleep the most important thing
is he's alive"

We made our way up stairs to Dylan's room and I told Jimmy to wait outside
whilst I went in to talk to Dylan's Mom. I walked in to the room and Jane
was sat in the chair just watching Dylan sleep.

"Dan? I thought you were going home to get a shower and change?" she asked
confused.

"Yeah I was but I ran into this kid downstairs named James who'd been
pretty well beaten as officer Sharp and I were leaving and he was really
upset, so I stayed to treat him."

"Aww Dan, this is why Dylan loves you, you're so compassionate?.."

"Wait" I said interrupting her. 'Hear me out there's more. This James kid
was rushing to the hospital not to have his injuries seen to but because he
had been told that his friend had been killed in an accident. He was
distraught."

"Oh my goodness the poor love, who was the kid that was killed?"

"That's the point Jane, it was Dylan, it was Dylan he was here to see and
that kid James is Jimmy Kent, the Jimmy Kent that Dylan was talking about.
This kid is the breakthrough in this case I am convinced." I said
excitedly.

As I finished a small croaky voice interrupted us. "Jimmy Kent? Jimmy is
here?" I had woken Dylan with my over enthusiastic explanation to Jane.

"Sorry I woke you baby" I said to Dylan as I walked over and placed a kiss
on his cheek.

Dylan looked at me and smiled wearily "Did I hear you say that Jimmy Kent
is here" he asked groggily.

"Yes baby he's outside; do you want to see him?"

"Yeah sure, it would be nice to see a friendly face." Dylan replied.

"Oh charming!!!" Jane and I said in unison.

"I didn't mean it like that" Dylan said poking his tongue out at us.

"Ok Dylan I'll go and get Jimmy, he's been waiting patiently and has been
really worried about you."

"Aww bless him he's such a nice guy, shame about his family." This time
Jane didn't say a word.

I opened the door and stuck my head through "Hey Jimmy you're in luck
Dylan's awake, come on in." Jimmy bounced up off the chair he had sat on
with a huge grin on his face. Without the bruising Jimmy would be a cute
guy.

"Hey Jimm?.. What the fuck happened to your face?" Dylan spluttered out as
Jimmy entered the room.

"Dylan mind your language please" Jane scolded.

"My fucking language mom? Have you seen Jimmy's face?" Dylan was
incandescent with rage at the site of his friend's injuries. "Did that
fucking bully brother do that to you again Jimmy?"

"Dylan" I said in the tone of voice I used to let him know I was pissed.
"Firstly apologize to your mom and please don't ever curse at her again in
my presence and second please calm down you're making Jimmy feel extremely
uncomfortable."

As soon as Dylan had started his tirade I could see Jimmy shrinking into
himself wishing the floor would open and swallow him up.

"Dan look at him, how can I be calm when his scumbag brother did that to
him?" Dylan retorted pointing at Jimmy. As Dylan's eyes made contact with
Jimmy his face immediately changed, the rage instantly gone and sorrow and
pity replacing it. Jimmy stood there facing us the tears gently running
down his face.

"Oh Jimmy I'm so sorry" Dylan said quietly his voice disappearing to
nothing.

"Dylan" Jimmy replied reaching deep in to himself to find the courage to
talk. "I came here because I was desperate; I was franticly worried about
you, because I thought you were dead. I'm here for you, not to have you
get mad at me about my injuries. An hour ago I thought you were dead and my
life and world broke apart and I felt the loneliest I have ever felt, and
then I found out you were alive and my heart rose and my life had new hope
and energy. Please forget about how I look or who made me this way and
focus on you and getting better. I would have been lost without you Dylan,
you helped me find myself and losing you would have been too much."

I stood and looked at Jimmy, unable to move or speak, overwhelmed by the
words that had just escaped the lips of the young wirey boy stood before
me.

"Oh Jimmy, I'm so sorry" Dylan said again. "Come here it's so good to see
you."

I looked at Jane and jerked my head to the side indicating to her that we
should leave.

"Dylan you're mom and I are going to leave you to guys to it for a bit
there's some stuff I need to talk to your mom about anyways." Dylan looked
up at me and I could see the appreciation and love in his eyes.

"Mom I'm sorry for cussing at you I was angry and I shouldn't have done
it."

"It's ok Dylan just don't make a habit of it" Jane replied winking at him
and making him smile. Before I left the room I walked over to Dylan and
kissed him gently on the lips.

"I love you Dylan" I said tenderly. As I pulled away I planted a gentle
kiss on Jimmy's cheek. "And you Jimmy Kent are far deeper than your looks
give you credit for." Jimmy blushed bright red and giggled.

"Thank you doctor" he replied as Jane and I headed out of the door.

I turned and looked at them both "You're welcome Jimmy, you're very
welcome."

Once Jane and I had left the room I looked back through the window and saw
Dylan hug Jimmy as best he could with his injuries.

"You know what Jane, it looks like Dylan may have himself a real loyal
friend there in Jimmy but for now he's a possible witness to a crime and he
needs to talk to Officer Sharp."
