Accidents will Happen

Chapter 34

Jane, Jimmy and Sharp left the room as I sat down on the bed with Dylan.
"It's been an exciting few days hasn't it?" I said to Dylan breaking the
silence that had enveloped the room.

"Exciting, ha that's one word for it" Dylan replied, his eyes starting to
well with tears again. "I can't believe this has happened to us Dan, I
mean we could both be dead by now, killed by some crazy nut who didn't like
us because we're gay. Is this how it's going to be for the rest of our
lives? Living in fear of another psycho who has a grudge because we aren't
attracted to women?"

I leaned forward and gently wiped away the tears that had started to
trickle down Dylan's cheeks. "No Dylan this is not how it's going to be,
yes there are crazy people out there but they are few and far between.
Some people may not like or agree with our lifestyle but Jimmy's brother is
an extreme. In all the years that I have been out I have never had an
experience like this, never. I think the catalyst to Jimmy's brother's
reaction was he couldn't cope with Jimmy being gay, it didn't fit to his
macho image and he blamed you for it and then me."

Dylan sighed and looked at me, "I feel so bad for Jimmy Doc, he's a great
guy but he's going to be completely disowned by his family over this."

"Dylan don't worry we will help Jimmy out whatever happens, we won't let
him be on his own and your Mum seems to have taken him under her wing
already."

Dylan smiled at this image, "Yeah, I think you're right there Dan, she
always has been a softy."

"Right babe I should go and get some rest, I feel pretty beat up." I said
yawning. "I wish you didn't have to go I feel so lonely here in the
hospital on my own."

"I know baby but I have hardly slept in 36 hours and sooner or later the
hospital is going to want me to come back to work."

"I know, hopefully mom won't be too long with Jimmy."

I walked over to Dylan looked him in the eyes and kissed him on the lips
deeply and fully.

"I love you Dylan, you've made my life so much brighter and happier."

"I love you too Doc." Dylan replied throwing his arms around me. "Right you
need to go home and get some rest and I'm going to watch some TV to pass
the time, I'll be here waiting for you when you come back."

I left Dylan watching re-runs of Family Guy and made my way back out to my
car. Getting in and turning the ignition I reflected on the last 36 hours
and how things had escalated so quickly.

"Madness" I said to myself as I put the car in gear and drove home.

The drive took 15 minutes and within 10 minutes of pulling in to the
driveway I was in bed. As my head hit the pillow I closed my eyes and was
asleep in seconds.

I woke with a start, the ringing noise waking me up from my slumber after
what seemed like only 5 minutes. I looked at the digital display of the
alarm clock and it read 8:42pm. I'd been asleep over 6 hours but still
felt exhausted. I got up searching for the source of the ringing noise
still half asleep not recognizing it as the front door bell. Slowly coming
round I reached for my dressing gown and headed to the door.

"I'm coming, I'm coming" I yelled as the ringing persisted with longer
rings. I got to the door mumbling to myself about the lack of patience and
who could possibly want to speak to me so damn urgently. I opened it and
stood there was Jane and Officer Sharp. My heart immediately sank and my
face must have betrayed my thoughts.

"Dan, thank God you're ok we've been calling your cell phone and house
phone for over 2 hours, when you didn't reply we came over here to check on
you, Sharp was about to break to door down, we've been stood out here for
10 minutes ringing this damn bell" Jane said sounding flustered and
worried.

"Why what's wrong? Is it Dylan? Please tell me he's ok." I said hearing
the panic in my own voice.

"Oh Dan, Dylan is fine. Sorry if we panicked you."

"So why the urgency? I was trying to catch up with some sleep."

"Dylan's memory has come back, he was sat watching the TV and something
must have triggered it, when we got back from talking to Jimmy at the
station Dylan was in a bit of a state. His memory had come back and he'd
tried to call you but couldn't get hold of you. Then we tried and we
couldn't get hold of you either on any phone and we all started to worry
that maybe you had had a problem after the incident today. You hear so
often about people who have had a head injury going to bed and never waking
up, so we came over."

"Oh poor Dylan, he knows how heavy I sleep though, anyway come in and let
me get a shower and we can go back to the hospital I am keen on hearing
what Dylan remembers."

"Yes us too, he refused to tell us until we came over here to check on
you."

"Maybe you should call the hospital and let him know I am ok save him
worrying whilst I grab a shower" I replied heading for the bathroom.

"Already on it" replied Jane.

Ten minutes later I was showered and dressed and heading out to officer
Sharp's car.

"So what did you learn from Jimmy?" I asked.

"Well we learned that it was his brother who told him that Dylan had been
killed in a car accident, but we knew that already from when he spoke to
you at the very beginning. He also told us that his brother had been
extremely vocal about him not hanging around with that 'Fag' from school
and he needed to man up. Jimmy stood up to him and told him to not call
his friend a fag and that he actually really liked Dylan. Jimmy said his
brother got very angry grabbing him by the throat and threatening him.
Jimmy said he told him to fuck off and leave him alone and that if he
didn't like Dylan then he wouldn't like him either. He said that his
brother snarled at him and asked him what he meant by that and that was
when Jimmy told him that he was gay. By all accounts his brother went nuts
giving Jimmy a good beating saying that he'd beat the gay out of Jimmy. It
took his dad to pull his brother of Jimmy and after a few minutes of
screaming at each other Jimmy's brother stormed off, after stealing Jimmy's
phone so he couldn't call his 'Fag friend', telling him that he was going
to sort this once and for all. Jimmy said he didn't then see his brother
until the time he told him Dylan was dead." Sharp replied.

I looked at Jane stunned as I processed what I'd just heard. "Really so
this guy decided he was going to beat the gay out of his brother? Sounds
like you have the man that got Dylan too; he has a motive and no alibi it
would seem."

"Well at the moment it looks that way but we have very little physical
evidence to prove that he was part of this at all" Sharp replied. "We
don't have any witnesses, we don't have the car and we don't have a
statement from Dylan that positively identifies him."

"What about Dylan's phone?" I asked. "Whoever has that must surely be
implicated."

"Yes but we don't have the phone Dan and at this moment in time we don't
even know how Jimmy's brother got to the hospital, we searched the car park
for his car but nothing" Sharp replied.

"Jesus Christ" I cussed extremely frustrated, "This guy is an idiot surely
he can't be clever enough to get away with this."

"Well let's hope not" Jane interjected, "Hopefully we shall get some useful
information from Dylan when we get there."

"Good point" I said cheering up a little. "Let's get there and see what
revelations he has!"

Twenty minutes later we were pulling in to the parking lot of the hospital,
it seemed as if I had not been away from this place in the last two days, I
was beginning to hate it.

Five minutes later we were in Dylan's room. I walked over to him and
kissed him.

"Did I worry you baby?" I whispered in his ear.

"Yeah you did, you didn't answer either of your phones and I called like a
hundred times" he replied.

"Sorry baby, I was just out like a light, you know how heavy I sleep when
I'm tired" I said winking at him.

Dylan giggled, "Yes I do."

"Ok Dylan" Sharp interrupted, "You said you got your memory back so spill
it."

"Yeah sorry" Dylan replied blushing a little. "Ok well I was watching an
episode of Family Guy when it hit me, I don't know what made me remember
but it just came back. I was in bed at Dan's he'd just gone off to work
and I decided that because of the weather I was going to stay at Dan's,
watch some movies and good dinner for him for when he got home. I got up
and had a shower and sent a couple of texts to Dan. When I got out of the
shower I got dressed and checked my phone and there was a missed call and a
voicemail, both from Dan. It was such a lovely voicemail too. Anyways I
headed into the kitchen when I heard the message alert noise on my phone,
being as I thought it was from Dan I ran to the bedroom to read it."

Dylan's demeanor changed, looking down into his lap. I grabbed his hand
and gave it a little squeeze. "It's ok Dylan I am here" I said quietly
trying to reassure him.

"But the message wasn't from Dan it was from Jimmy, begging me for help,
telling me that he needed me to meet him and asking could he stay with me.
I replied back to him asking him what was wrong, he text back saying that
he had been beaten by his brother again and had run away but had nowhere to
go and was in bad shape. He text that he thought he was being followed and
was worried that his brother was going to kill him. I asked him where he
was and told him I would come get him. He told me where he was and I put on
all the winter clothes I could find and headed out. He told me he was
sheltering up by the old firehouse so I didn't think it was too much of a
walk from Dan's. As I walked I got another text telling me to hurry, I was
beginning to worry a little because they weren't like the normal texts I
usually got from Jimmy, they sounded, well, desperate. I gave him an
update to where I was and how long I thought I'd be. I approached the
firehouse and told him I was nearly there and he said he was round the back
and as I walked along the sidewalk I heard a car behind me. I was mindful
that I needed to cross the street to get to the firehouse so I looked round
to see how far away the car was. At that moment the car came on to the
sidewalk and next thing I knew I was flying through the air. I don't
remember anything from that moment onwards until of course I woke up here."

The silence lasted a couple of minutes, me stroking Dylan's hand as his
tears gently fell on to the bed sheet, the silence only intermittently
broken by the unmistakable sound of a pencil being furiously tortured over
paper as Sharp finished his notes.

"Thank you Dylan, I know that was difficult for you" Sharp started. "Do
you feel up to answering a few questions?"

Dylan looked up, his features resolute and stoic, "Sure, fire away."

"Thank you Dylan" Sharp replied, smiling at the firmness and determined
tone of Dylan's answer. "Do you remember what type of car it was, make or
color?"

"Actually yes I do, it was a white, old BMW."

"Ok, did you get a look at the driver?"

"No sorry I didn't, it all happened far too quickly, by the time I'd seen
the car it as on me." Dylan replied.

"It's fine Dylan, is there anything else you remember that you think we
should know about?" "Not that I can think of, but if anything else comes
back I will be sure to tell you. Do you think Jimmy was part of this, did
he lure me to the firehouse?" Dylan asked with apprehension in his voice.

"Absolutely not" Sharp replied. "I think Jimmy is as much of a victim in
all of this as you are. The poor boy has a terrible home life and his
brother from the sound of it used his phone to lure you so he could hurt
you. Jimmy will be devastated when he finds out how his brother lured you"

"Do you have to tell him?" asked Dylan

"Yes because we are going to need his phone."

"Ok, where is he now?"

"He's still down town finishing his statement then we will take him back to
his parents" Sharp replied.

"You can't take him back to his family they'll kill him" Dylan shouted.

"Dylan you will have to trust me on this one, taking Jimmy home might just
break open this case, I have a warrant to search the house and grounds now
we have Jimmy's brother in custody and it will be very interesting to see
how his family react to him being brought home by the Police."

Dylan shook his head and pouted, "You're just using him, you better keep
him safe, I've seen what that family can do to him and you don't want that
on your conscience."
