"My friends and I will take Nicklas to our apartment here in Prague after
you release him and bring him back here for examinations," John said.  "I
have to return to Michigan in about a week, but I want to be with Nicky as

"I want you to stay with me!" Nicklas blurted out.  "I want you to live
here with me!  Please don't leave me!  I need you!"

John listened to his lover and wished that he could live in the Czech
Republic for the rest of his life!  He had responsibilities with his job,

Remember what they looked like when we first saw them?  They were starving
and wearing rags!  You changed that, and you brought Nicklas into a
wonderful life where he didn't have to trade his body for food!  Every
place you go, you find people in need and you reach out to them and make
this world a better place!  I love you, and I'm proud to be a part of your

"I love you too!" John admitted.  "Sometimes I'm overwhelmed by the changes

Once inside, the store manager welcomed them into his small store.  He

John limped around the store using his cane, and wished that his leg wound
was healed so he could go for a long run.  He loved running and felt like
he was out of shape with his limited mobility.  He saw a collection of
acoustical guitars and remembered his college days.  "I used to play the
guitar when I was bored in college," John said to Mike.

The store manager understood English, and immediately showed the visitor
his guitar collection.

John accepted a guitar and began strumming the strings with a melody that
he hadn't heard in decades.  Just holding the guitar brought back fond
memories, but the guitar was completely out of tune, and he began making

The store manager was very astute, and realized that the shopper was
interested in his merchandise.  "I have a very special guitar in the back

"My son's a music teacher!" Jan Dreva said while introducing himself to
John, Mike and the bodyguards.  "He would love to move there and teach the

John asked for extra strings for the guitar and was pleased when he met Cil
Dreva.  He translated the name and told Mike that the English equivalent
was Mark Fish.  He gave Cil the information for the location of the
orphanage and sat down to talk to the handsome man.

John was in the recovery room, waiting for Nicky to awake after the

suffer the pain of surgery to repair the damage done by his uncle and other

Nicky was awake.

"I heard music," Nicky said softly.  "I thought I was dead."

"You have to stay calm and rest," John said.  "I was playing my new guitar
while I waited for you to wake up.  How do you feel?"

"I can't feel anything," Nicky said to John "but I can taste blood."

"Doctor Kuchar told you that you would taste blood," John said softly.
"I'm proud of you for being strong for your surgery."

"I want to see my new nose," Nicky said.

"You know that you have to wait for the bandages to be removed," John
replied.  "Your face is swollen and will be bruised.  I'll be here with you
until you're ready to leave this hospital, and then we'll spend some time
together at our apartment here in Prague."

Nicklas liked hearing John's calming voice, and he was pleasantly surprised
when John said it was "our apartment".  He asked John to play the guitar,
and drifted off to sleep when he heard the beautiful music.

"He woke up but he went back to sleep," John said to Doctor Kuchar.  "He
said he couldn't feel anything but tasted blood in his mouth."

"The pain medication will wear off soon, but we can give him more
medication if he's in pain," Doctor Kuchar said.  "I'm so happy that you
came here to be with him.  He was very upset and worried about you, and I
was ready to cancel the surgery because of his worries.  We all saw the
television reports, and we all were afraid for you."

Two days later, the doctors came in the private room to remove the
bandages.  Doctor Kuchar reminded Nicklas that his face would be swollen
and bruised, and that he had to wear the protective mask until the
cartilage in his nose healed.

John, Mike, Kvetka and Doctor Johan Kovar were in the room along with
Doctor Victoria Kuchar when the bandages were removed.  When Nicklas saw
his face in the mirror, he started crying.  His broken nose was now
straight and much smaller, but his face was swollen and he thought that he
looked ugly.

"You have to wait for your face to heal," John said while hugging his boy.
"I loved you before this surgery, and I'll always love you, no matter
what!"

When the packing was pulled out of his nasal passages, Nicklas thought that
his entire brain was being pulled out of his head!  His mouth was filled

hospital gown.

John felt sick when he saw the blood, but tried to be strong for Nicky.  He
wiped away the blood and talked softly to his boy to calm him down.

"The swelling will still make you breath through your mouth," Doctor Kuchar
said.  "In a day or more you should be able to breathe through your nose,
and then your voice will be normal."

John was used to the raspy sound of Nicky's voice, and wondered what his
boy's voice would sound like when Nicky could breathe normally through his
nose.  He really didn't care, but he hoped that Nicky would have a normal
voice of a boy his age.

By the time Nicklas was released from the hospital, John was thrilled to

After each song finished, he and John spent time translating the words from
English to Czech and back.  Each day they let the Czech bodyguards lead
them on a sightseeing tour of parts of the city, and John, Mike and Nicklas
enjoyed the trips.  They ate meals in the finest restaurants in Prague and
attracted a lot of attention.  Seeing a boy with a clear plastic mask and
bruised face was unusual enough, but seeing at least four obvious
bodyguards created a lot of attention.  It wasn't long before paparazzi
started shadowing John Miller, and pictures appeared in several newspapers
and on television reports around the world.

During one of their excursions around the city, the group went to the Expat
Center where John had a large bank account.  Pavel Pekar, Bank Manager,
welcomed them into his office and offered everyone refreshments.  "I have
some good news for you," Pavel said to John and Nicklas.  Our attorney was
able to find Jan Zednik."

Nicklas bristled with anger when he heard his uncle's name.  He wanted to
leave the office, but John held his hand and told him to listen to
Mr. Pekar.

"He's a bad man, and didn't want to cooperate with us," Pavel continued.
"When he realized that our attorney had two INTERPOL officers with him, his
mood changed drastically.  He knows about your wealth and wanted a huge
amount of money for signing the papers, but when he was threatened with
prison for beating Nicklas, he signed."

"What papers?" Nicklas asked.

"He was your legal guardian and we needed your birth certificate," John
said to Nicky.  "I asked Mr. Pekar to help me find him."

"I hate him!" Nicklas said with tears flowing down his face.  "He beat me
and his two sons for having sex."

"Here are the papers," Pavel said while handing the documents to John
Miller and talked directly to Nicklas.  "Right now, your legal guardian is
our lawyer for the bank, but we can transfer your guardianship to someone
else.  Who would you like to have as your guardian?"

"That's what I was hoping for!" John admitted.  He took Nicklas to the
corner of the room and talked softly to his boy.  "I wanted him out of your
life so I could ask you something very important.  What would you think

"I'm serious!" John replied.  "Mr. Pekar can make it happen now that we
have these papers!  I want to adopt you and make you my son!"

John was thrilled that he would have a new son, and led Nicky back to Pavel
Pekar and the other people in the office.  "How long will it take for the
adoption?" John asked Pavel.

"I'll have the attorney take care of everything," Pavel said.  "Things
happen fast in this country, and I have a friend who's a judge.  He told me
that it could be accomplished before Christmas.  There will be an
investigation of your background of course, but I know that everything will
go quickly.  You have powerful friends in this country, and Andrei Datsyuk,
INTERPOL Inspector here in Prague has offered to write a letter in your
behalf.  Of course, I'll write my own letter, and I'm sure that Kvetka
Paulikova will write one too!"

"Wonderful!" John said.  He hugged Nicky and wiped away the tears that were
flowing down the boy's face.  He had to remove the protective mask to wipe
Nicky's face, and then put the mask back on.

"Jan Zednik is a bad man!" Pavel said.  "We found out that he beat his two
sons and threw them out of his home.  The boys were living on the streets
and begging for food when we found them."

"Where are Karl and Jiri?" Nicklas asked.

"We had Jan Zednik sign over guardianship of Karl and Jiri too," Pavel
said.  "Both boys now have Kvetka Paulikova as their legal guardian and
they're at Proud Les Domo right now, waiting for you!"

Nicklas was excited about seeing his two cousins again, and thanked
Mr. Pekar for rescuing them!  All of the news made Nicklas dizzy, and he
had to sit down to comprehend the meaning of what he had just heard.  He
was going to be John's son and he would be reunited with his two cousins!

Back in Detroit, Margaret Miller was waiting for news from her new lawyer,
Levi Mitchell.  She was furious when Levi told her that his process server
was unable to find John Miller in Detroit or Onaway, and had even traveled
to Nassau to serve the papers for the new lawsuit.  Margaret refused to pay
for the process server to travel to the Czech Republic, and unleashed her
anger at the attorney.  "Why didn't you just serve that asshole, Bobby
Goldman?  You're wasting time and my money by sending that shithead all

"The papers have to be served directly to the defendant," Levi Mitchell
replied.  He had refused to take the lawsuit on a contingency basis,
knowing that there was little chance of winning the lawsuit if it ever went
to court.  If he were successful in getting an "out of court" settlement,
he would be rewarded with 30% of the settlement.  His practice was in deep
trouble, and he needed a big score to get out of deep financial difficulty.

John was back in the Prague apartment when he got the call from Bobby
Goldman.  "Margaret has a new attorney, and she's trying to serve you with
papers to re-open your divorce," Bobby said.  "With your new job, she
thinks that she can prove that you didn't disclose your job before the
divorce was final."

"What does that mean to me?" John asked.

"I have a friend in the Court Recorders' Office, and my friend said that
Margaret's demanding punitive damages of 50 million dollars and 10 million
dollars a year for the rest of her life," Bobby replied.  "It's a frivolous
lawsuit, and we can prove that you never met Betty Anderson or Martha
Jenkins until after the divorce was final.  We could probably pay her a
million dollars and she'd evaporate!"

"I'll pay 10 million dollars in legal fees to keep her from getting a
cent!" John replied emphatically.  "She's been harassing my son, and I
won't let the bitch intimidate me!"

"I expected that reaction from you!" Bobby laughed.  "Just relax and let me
handle her and her sisters.  I'll tie them up with depositions and trial
extensions until they're all broke!  Her new lawyer is a total jerk, and I
can manipulate him like a puppet!"

"Does she have any chance of winning if we go to court?" John asked.

"Absolutely none!" Bobby replied.  "Her only hope is that we'll make an
offer to settle the lawsuit without going to court.  Trust me!  I'm your
attorney and best friend, and I'm going to have fun making her life a

When Nicklas had his final examination by the doctors at the hospital in
Prague, everyone left for the drive to the orphanage.  John was excited to
see the children and relax in the beautiful countryside.  He wanted to try
fishing in the huge lake, and was pleased when Kvetka told him that the
boats and motors that he had ordered had arrived.

Kvetka had returned to the orphanage right after the surgery, and she was
excited when she learned that John, Mike, Nicklas and the bodyguards were
headed for the orphanage.  She went to the front porch and grabbed the air
horn.  One long blast on the air horn told everyone that John Miller would
be arriving very soon.  The adults and children were excited to greet their
special man, and they cheered and ran next to the limousine when it entered
the long driveway.

"Look at them!" Mike exclaimed when he saw the first group of children.
"Do you remember what they looked like when we first got here?  This is
fantastic to see healthy kids wearing clean clothes!  I'm hungry and hope
that Kvetka has another one of her fantastic meals for us!"

When John limped out of the stretch limousine, he was swarmed with adults
and children.  Everyone wanted to hug him and celebrate his return to the
home.  Nicklas was a celebrity, with everyone wanting to see his face after
the extensive surgery.

The most important reunion happened when Nicklas saw his two cousins
hanging back in the crowd of children.  Karl and Jiri were afraid that
Nicklas would hate them for what their father had done, but when Nicklas
ran up to them and gave them hugs, their fears evaporated!  They sobbed
openly and couldn't believe that Nicklas was with them again.

Nicky held the hands of his cousins and led them to meet John Miller.  Karl
and Jiri saw John hugging and talking to other children, and were reluctant
to approach him until Nicklas insisted that they should meet his special

"John, these are my cousins, Karl and Jiri," Nicky said to John.  "They
think that you will hate them for what their father did to me."

"I learned a long time ago that hate will destroy a person," John said in
Czech to the two boys.  "If you're cousins of my boy, you're special to me
too!"  John hugged both boys and welcomed them to the orphanage.

John was pleased when Kvetka introduced him to the other boys and girls who
had arrived at the orphanage since his last visit.  He sat down on a bench
on the front porch and talked softly to the new children in their native
language.  The children all thanked him for letting them live at Proud Les
Domo, and John choked back his tears.  The children were thanking him, and
he thanked them for making the home a better place by living there.  Four
of the children were handicapped.  One boy was missing his left leg, and
another boy had lost most of his right arm.  One of the girls was blind,
and the other had lost both legs below the knees.  John was pleased that
the physically challenged children were now at the orphanage, and he
listened to Kvetka explain the special services that were in place for the
special needs children.

When the special children left, John talked to Kvetka and reminded her that
the children would be treated in Prague and fitted with prosthetic limbs at
his expense.  He was tired, but wanted to have supper with the children
before going to the office to check his emails.

Two days later, John took Nicklas out on the lake to try and catch some
fish.  Two boats of bodyguards accompanied the two special friends out on

"You gave permission for the villagers to fish on the lake, and everyone's

Vilém and John teamed up to filet the fish, and Kvetka promised to cook the

along with pork roast, dumplings, sauerkraut and a variety of cooked
vegetables out of the extensive garden.

After dessert, John watched the movie with Nicklas on his lap.  He loved

John.  "Marty and I have been building tree blinds for deer hunting and
have them strategically placed all over your property."

"That sounds great to me!" John admitted.  "Did David Bertram deliver the
boats and motors?"

"He sure did!" Keith replied.  "David has been out here fishing with his
sons, and I've been flooded with requests from people wanting to fish the
lake!"

"What have you heard about the Walker and Longhurst families?" John asked.

"They're all gone now!" Keith replied.  "The entire county's relieved to
have those rednecks either dead or in jail!  We love our new home, and I'm
the most popular guy in town with my control of the hunting and fishing on
the Arrowhead properties!"

"How about you?" John asked Marty.

"I'm the starting quarterback on the football team, and Coach Carter said
that I'm gonna get a college scholarship if I continue winning games!"

"My son's doing great, and we owe it all to you!" Keith said.  "You rescued
us, and we'll never forget what you did for us!"

"I have some friends coming up to hunt geese and ducks," John said.  "I
hope that we don't mess up any plans that you have for your own hunting."

"We've been nailing some ducks and geese since season opened," Keith said.
"Marty and I are excited that you came here to hunt with us!"

John was pleased that he wasn't upsetting any plans for Keith and Marty,
and relaxed in the lodge.  He cooked for everyone, and was pleased when
everyone complimented him on his special recipe for chicken soup.

Tom Jeffries arrived at the lodge along with his son, Jamie and Jamie's
boyfriend, Hunter Harwood.  The next guests to arrive were Tom Baxter,
husband of Helen Baxter, Brad Martin, John's deer hunting friend, and Butch
Mendez.  Everyone celebrated their first evening at the lodge and prepared
for their first hunt.  They talked about the changes since the tragic days
of the gunfights with the Walker and Longhurst families, and everyone was
relieved to hear that the town was quiet and happy that the shitheads were
gone.

The lodge was alive with excitement when Ron Balcolm, the neighbor arrived
with his wife, Allison, sons, Toby and Bobby, and daughter, Samantha.  Next
to arrive was David Bertram, owner of Freeway Sports and his two sons,
along with Joe Nahler, owner of Joe's Bar.  Joe Taylor, owner of Taylor
Lumber in Onaway joined the party, along with Mike Collins, butcher at the
Spartan Stores and Alan Helmuth, Commander of the Cheboygan State Police
Post.  All of the guests were thrilled that they had been invited to stay
at the lodge and go hunting with John Miller and his friends.

The hunt was a big success, with everyone limiting out on ducks and geese.
The lodge was filled with happy hunters, and everyone looked forward to the
deer-hunting season in November.  After hunting, the guests went out
fishing and limited out on huge bass, walleye and northern pike.

"This has been a fantastic time for me!" John said to his guests in the
Game Room.  "I love having friends here to enjoy what God provided for us!
I want all of you to plan to hunt and fish here for the rest of your
lives!"

The opening day of deer season was a repeat of the successful duck and
goose hunting.  With the huge herd of deer on the property, the hunters
decided to be selective in harvesting only bucks with eight points or more.
Jamie Jeffries was the king of the hunt and accepted the congratulations of
everyone for bagging a huge 12-point buck.

John called Nicklas every day, and loved hearing the high-pitched voice of
his special lover.  Nicky was learning English, and was now able to
complete an entire conversation in his new language.

"When will you come back to me?" Nicky asked John.  "I miss you so much!"

"I'm refereeing the State Championship games, and then I'll fly to be with
you," John promised.  "Are you ready to become my son?"

"I'm so excited about the adoption!" Nicky said.  "It's like a dream to me
when I think about becoming your son!"

John ended the call and got ready for the deposition that was scheduled
with Bobby Goldman and Levi Mitchell.  Levi was pushing for an out of court
settlement, but John and Bobby were determined to drag out the legal
proceedings.  When the meeting started in the conference room at the office
of Mitchell and Mitchell, John was forced to face his ex-wife for the first
time in many months.

"You're fatter and uglier!" John said when he saw Margaret.

Bobby just smiled and listened to Margaret unleash a litany of cuss words
aimed at him and his best friend, John.

"This place is a dump!" John said to Levi Mitchell.  "You need to fumigate
this rat hole!"

"I won't tolerate your disrespect!" Levi Mitchell exclaimed.

"Let's get this over with so I can get some fresh air and look at something
beautiful instead of Margaret's ugly face!" John demanded.

Margaret was livid at how John was treating her and her lawyer!  Even when
her attorney reminded her that the court recorder was capturing her
comments, Margaret continued her verbal attack aimed at her ex-husband.

The deposition lasted over an hour, with Bobby controlling the answers from
John.  On purpose, he led the responses away from any direct comments about
when John started his new job.  The answers were vague, but convinced Levi
Mitchell that John Miller was working for Taylor Paint and Wallpaper during
and after the divorce.  His only hope was to get Bobby Goldman aside for
private negotiations that he hoped would lead to a cash settlement.  He
asked to talk to Bobby alone in his office, and watched John Miller walk
out of his office building.

John had driven his Ferrari Testarossa to the deposition, and had purposely
parked the bright red car in front of the building.  Derek Kaufman and
Lindsey Smith walked with John out of the building and they saw Margaret
Miller for the first time.

"How could you marry her?" Derek asked John.

"When she was young, she was thin and attractive," John replied.  He saw
that Margaret was listening to his conversation and added; "Now she's a
fat, ugly bitch, and I hate her and her ugly sisters!"

Margaret let loose with a stream of obscenities, and wanted to slap John's
face, but the two bodyguards stepped in her way.  When she saw Mike Mahon
waiting beside the exotic sports car, she yelled, "Is he still fucking you
in the ass?"

"Wouldn't you love to know!" Mike retorted.  "I see that you've been
grazing a lot lately with your fat slob sisters!"

Margaret was livid and went to slap Mike, but Derek Kaufman got in her way
and said, "If you so much as touch him or John, I'll smash your teeth out
the back of your head!"

"How do you like my new car?" John asked Margaret.  "I own this one and
another 35 now that I'm rich and single!"

"I'M GONNA KILL YOU!" Margaret screamed at John.

"That constitutes assault!" a voice said.

Margaret turned and saw two police officers standing next to the building.
She cussed at both officers and went ballistic when the first officer said,
"You're under arrest for threatening his life!"  When he tried to put
handcuffs on Margaret, she lashed out and hit both police officers.

"Now you're in more trouble!" the first officer said.  "Assault and battery
on a police officer violates your probation!"

The two officers had to knock Margaret down on the ground to get the
handcuffs on her, and they read her the Miranda Rights before dragging her
to their cruiser.

Mike ran inside the building and interrupted the meeting between Bobby
Goldman and Levi Mitchell.  He looked at the sleazy lawyer and said, "Your
client just got arrested for threatening John's life and then she assaulted
two police officers!"

Levi Mitchell jumped out of his chair and ran outside the building just in
time to see Margaret in the back of the police cruiser when it pulled away.
He was furious and started screaming at John and Mike.

Bobby Goldman smiled and packed his briefcase to leave.  Levi Mitchell had
made a settlement offer of 10 million dollars and kept insisting that he
would win much more when he put Margaret Miller in front of a judge.  Levi
had stated that by revealing Margaret's terrible financial situation
compared to her ex-husband's would win sympathy from the judge.

"Do you still think a judge will be sympathetic after your client assaulted
a police officer?" Bobby asked Levi with a huge grin on his face.  He
walked up to John and said, "I think I need a big drink!  How about taking
me to the Hidden Harbor Yacht Club so we can relax for the rest of the
day?"

John smiled and said to Levi Mitchell, "I hope you got a huge retainer from
her because I'm prepared to take this lawsuit all the way to trial.  Your
client's been harassing my son and his family, and I won't tolerate it!
Now that she's in jail again where she belongs, my attorney will prove to
you and her just how talented he is!"

John got in his powerful car and left Levi Mitchell standing on the
sidewalk.  "He was so pissed that I thought he would explode!" He said to
Mike.  "We were lucky that those two cops were in the area."

"That wasn't luck," Mike said.  "Bobby set that up!  He told me that he
suspected that Margaret would go postal when she saw you, so he called in a
favor to have the cops ready."

"I wanted to beat the fuck out of her," John admitted.  "Some day I'll get
even with her and her two bitchy sisters!"
