but if it means that you are safe"

James said "ok get your clothes on I m going to take you to the hospital
for a check up and don't forget if they ask I m a friend of the family ok"

Alex said "yeah ok"

James and Alex arrived at the local hospital's accident and emergency dept
and James checked Alex in.

After Alex was checked by a triage nurse he waited to see a doctor mean
while James noticed the nurse watching him.

James walked over to the desk and said "I wonder if you can contact social
services see I m worrying about the safety of Alex's younger Brother Ben"

The nurse said "that the hospital social worker had already been called and
was on her way"

James said "thanks"

Ten minutes later a official looking woman arrived and walked over and said
"excuse me sir can I have a word"

James said "sure"

"I'm Brenda Taylor from the local social services dept and I act as the
liaison officer to the hospital"

James said "hi I m James Gregory"

"Ok Mr Gregory can you please explain to me how young Alex came about these
injuries" Mrs Taylor said

James said "well I can tell you as much as Alex has told me"

James then said "Alex stayed out at a mate's house and when he got home his
step dad decided to punish him and basically these injuries are the result"

Can I also ask you how do you know Alex? Mrs Taylor asked

James decided that he would have to tell a lie or he could get into serious
trouble "well I know the family but don't know the current step dad"

Mrs Taylor said "ok that is all I need for now off you Mr Gregory"

"What about Ben?" James asked

"I m sorry who is Ben?" Mrs Taylor asked

"Ben is Alex's younger brother and he is still at the family home and as
you can understand I m really worried about his safety" James said looked
concerned

Mrs Taylor said "rest assured Mr Gregory the young lad will be safe we will
be paying Mrs Reed a visit and checking that everything in ok but Alex wont
be going back to the house for the time being"

Alex smiled and waved as Mrs Taylor led him into her car to start the
journey to a foster family who would take him in until the social services
could sort out the problem.


On the council estate

A police car followed by an official looking car pulled up outside the reed
home and two official looking people followed by two police officers got
out and knocked on the door.

They could hear screaming and shouting coming from inside and after several
attempts to get an answer the police gained entry a big burly man ran down
the stairs and tried to escape but the police officers caught him and then
one of the social workers shouted for the police to call an ambulance.

The ambulance arrived shortly after and the paramedics attended to young

Mrs Reed was shocked when the other two came up to her and placed her under
arrest and read her her rights she was taken to a different police station
for questioning.


Three weeks later

James had visited Alex several times since and had even been to the
hospital and seen Ben with Alex

Mrs Taylor had arranged to meet James at her office to discuss the reed
case.

James arrived at the office dressed in a suit and tie and was ushered
immediately into the office.

"Good afternoon Mr Gregory" Mrs Taylor

Mrs Taylor said "well we are having a few problems re homing Alex and Ben

Alex would want to be separated from Ben"

Mrs Taylor said "yeah we know and we have tried everything to keep them
together but so far no one is prepared to take two teenager lads on."

James then said "well is there anyway I can help maybe have the lads stay
with me as a temporary measure"

Mrs Taylor smiled and said "well if was a family member we would allow that
but has you are only a friend to do that we would have to carry out our
usual checks make sure you are a suitable responsible adult."

Well I can assure you Mrs Taylor that nothing would happen to the boys
while they were in my care" James said

Yeah but Mr Gregory we have to carry out these checks for all we know you
could be a paedophile" Mrs Taylor said

"I understand so can you start your checks because I don't think splitting
the boys up is a very good idea especially as they have been through enough
trauma recently with the step dad from hell" James said

"Yes of course Mr Gregory if you are serious about becoming the lad's
foster parent you will need to fill in this form and return it to me as
soon as possible" Mrs Taylor said handing over a large form

James smiled and said "there is one thing though which might stand in my
way I m gay and I m single"

"Mr Gregory that has no bearing on this case I have seen the way you have
helped Alex already and if I didn't think you would be suitable I would
have never even issued you with a form for temporary foster care for the
lads" Mrs Taylor said sternly

Six Weeks later

James walked out of the courthouse triumphant finally securing the foster
care order he needed to take Alex and Ben home to the studio
apartment. James knew he would have to be careful with his relationship
with Alex but knew that if they were discreet they should be ok.

James arrived at the apartment and looked round knowing that soon his peace

waited until the knock came at the door. James walked over to see Mrs

James gave Ben the grand tour and then said "right Ben this is your

Alex gave James a strange look remembering that the last time he was at the
studio there was only two bedrooms.

James walked next door where the old master bedroom was and said "and Alex
this is your room winking"

Alex walked in and said "wow when he realised that James had redecorated
the room in his favourite soccer team's colours."
