Chapter 10

Andrew's surgery was scheduled for the following week. He had a preoperative
appointment and Trey took him for that. He wanted to know for himself just
what his baby was going to have done to him.

The day of the surgery, Andrew, Trey and I headed off to the hospital but
not before he got plenty of hugs and kisses from the remaining family
members. We arrived and Trey helped Andrew get checked in and soon he was
being wheeled up to his room. This was a fairly simple procedure but the
doctor wanted him to stay over night just in case there were any problems he
was there so they could quickly be taken care of.

A nurse got him checked in plus I also saw him check Andrew out a few times.
He came in and started an IV line on him and then we all had to leave, as he
had to shave off Andrew's pubic hair for the operation. Andrew started to
cry until Trey went over to him and hugged him and said something into his
ear. All of a sudden I saw a sexy but evil grin come across Andrew's face. I
had to wonder just what Trey said to him.

We were chatting with Andrew when the team from the operating room came to
get him. Suddenly I became a very worried father. I let Trey hug him first
but I couldn't seem to let him go. I walked with him to the doors and I had
to let him go. Trey came over and took my hand saying, "It's going to be
alright Dad. He's going to be fine. Please try not to worry." Here I was
being cheered up by one of my children.

We went to the coffee shop while Andrew was in surgery. They said it would
take a couple of hours from the time he went in until we could see him in
recovery. Those had to be the longest two hours on record but we finally got
into see him.

When we went in to see him he was still very sleepy. About forty-five
minutes later they was taking him back to his room. He was quite sore but
before he asked for his pain medicine, he wanted to show us what they did.
He raised his gown and you really couldn't see much with everything else in
the way but he lifted it up and there was this bandaged area that looked
very swollen. Poor Trey felt so bad for Andrew that I think if he could have
kissed away the pain, he would have. He finally asked for his medicine and
he want back off to dreamland.

I stayed with him until just before 8 PM then I left Trey to attend to his
boyfriend. It had already been arranged that Trey could stay with him
overnight.

The next day, I picked Andrew and Trey up to bring them home. When we
arrived back at the house, he leaned on Trey to walk until he got to the
steps. Then Trey then scooped him up in his arms and carried him all the way
to their bedroom. I saw Phillip standing there so I informed him that both
boys would be needing their meals served to them and that was handled. After
lunch, I noticed that things were very quiet around the house so I thought I
would see what was going on. I knocked on the older boys' door and when I
went in, everyone was there keeping Andrew company.

The little ones were all around him and Dave was sitting beside the bed and
they were all watching television. I looked at Trey and he just smiled which
let me know everything was alright. I talked with Andrew for a few minutes
then went downstairs to do some reading. About an hour later Dave and the
young ones were joining me and I was told Andrew was tired and wanted to
take a nap. Over the next several weeks Andrew was on the mend and was soon
back to normal. He was getting around better and he and Trey were even going
out some. I was pleased that he had recovered without any problems. I think
Alex was too because this seemed to put his mind at east when it came time
for his stitches to be removed.

Again, time seemed to drag on until one day when I thought I was at a train
station or some other public facility because it wasn't my quiet home, or
was it? My first call was a reminder of my appointment to sign the papers on
Alex so hopefully the adoption could proceed smoothly. The next call was one
that I had almost completely forgotten about. It was the physician telling
me the blood test results were in on Alex and Andrew and that all three of
us would need to be present. I got an appointment for the next day, as I
really wanted to know what he had to tell me. I went up to tell the boys
they had an appointment to get the blood test results and I could see them
both suck in a little wind. It seems they were a bit like me, wondering what
they were going to find out. I left them alone after that and went
downstairs to read for a while.

I was there maybe half an hour when Andrew came in and sat across from me.
He picked up a book and started reading but I noticed that the pages weren't
moving. After a few minutes of this I looked at him and asked, "What's wrong
son. I noticed you and your brother both got nervous when I said the blood
test results were in."

Andrew closed his book and came to sit beside me. He looked at me and said,
"Father, I'm worried. It's not about me but Alex. I know us being blood
brothers will help him with the adoption but I don't care about the blood
part. I love him and nothing will ever change that. I just don't want to see
him not get what he needs and that's a loving home with people who care
about him."

I put my arm around him and he just leaned against me relaxing. I turned and
kissed his forehead and said, "Son, I don't really think I'll need the blood
tests. I guess there was a part of me that needed to know that you two are
actually brothers."

I could see him start to get a little upset when I said that because of what
he just went through with the surgery. I then said to him, "I also know
about the growth you and he have and that seems to be a family trait. I know
that it is pretty compelling evidence but it is genetic in nature. I know
you know about that so I don't need to bore you with everything."

His expression was changing and he started thinking and worrying again. I
heard him sigh then say, "I just want everything to work out alright for
him, that's all."

I shifted my position a little and noticed Alex standing there. I just
smiled at him and he came and sat with us. Andrew was startled until he saw
who it was. He took Alex and hugged him then Alex spoke saying, "Brother,
everything is going to work out for everybody. I've seen things here and
they seem to workout if we just trust things. I trust Dad. With everything
I've been through, that's hard. I have Rhys, you, Trey and dad. I have it
all and I just know things are as it should be."

Andrew put his head back against me and Alex cuddled up with him. Everyone
had closed their eyes when I heard Andrew say, "You know, I guess you're
right. Everything is as it should be and I'm very happy." I put me feet up
and the three of us nodded off to sleep.

The next thing I knew Phillip was waking us up for dinner. We just went in
there as we were and I was being looked at and I just shook my head and we
all began to eat. After dinner, we all went back to the family room and
watched a movie. I sat in my doublewide recliner and I had two guests, Alex
and Andrew. Rhys and Trey cuddled with Dave because I think they could tell
this was one time those two needed to be with me. About eleven, I sent all
the boys to bed since they seemed to be falling asleep out here. I saw the
four boys talking as they went upstairs so I had a pretty good idea who
would be sleeping with whom.

I slept fairly well but I could tell I was still tired when I got up the
next morning. We ate breakfast pretty much in silence then it was time to
leave. It took about twenty minutes to get to the office and not one word
was spoken the entire trip. We were just about to pull into the parking lot
when Alex came up with an idea.

I think he must have been thinking about this the entire time we were coming
here. I looked at him and he began to speak saying, "Andrew, Dad, I don't
think we should know what the blood test says. That piece of paper can't
tell me what I'm already feeling in my heart. I love Andrew and he loves me.
Isn't that all that really matters here? We already call each other bro and
brother so I myself say I don't want to know. Andrew, if you want to that's
alright and I won't think any differently of you. Dad, I know why you did
this and we don't have a problem with that so neither of us are upset with
you. We still love you and I want to become your legal adopted son."

Alex stopped talking when we came to the elevator because he didn't know who
might come up and hear what we were talking about. When the elevator doors
opened we waited for everyone to exit before we boarded. It so happened that
it was just we three so Andrew spoke. He said, "Alex how did you get so
smart? I thought about all you said and I have to agree with you, I don't
want to know the results either. If you have to use them with the adoption,
would you tell us both what it did say?"

I took my boys in my arms and hugged both of them. I looked at them and
said, "Yes boys, if I have to open them, then and only then will I tell you
what they say. I do plan to act like I already know what the results are and
I thought you should know this now that we have reached this conclusion."

They both nodded and the elevator stopped on our floor. We got out and went
into the doctor's office. We only waited a few minutes and then were led
into his personal office. We just got seated when the doctor came in
carrying a large manila envelope. He started to open it when I stopped him
saying, "Before you open that, I want to ask you one question. Do you have
copies of the results in each of the boys' medical records? Because if you
do, I want you to leave it sealed and not tell us what the results are. The
boys decided that unless I needed to use this in Alex's adoption, we would
let the results remain unknown."

The doctor nodded his head confirming that there were results in the boy's
records and handed me the envelope unopened. We all stood and each of us
shook the doctors hand. We were about to leave when the doctor said, "I want
to wish all of you the best of luck with Alex's adoption. He couldn't have a
finer man for a father. Call me if you need me."

We went back to the car and both boys were sitting in the back seat talking
and carrying on up a storm. It was as if a huge weight was lifted off their
shoulders. Alex was right, what was a piece of paper going to tell them that
their hearts weren't?

The drive home seemed faster this time and even before I knew it, I was
pulling into the driveway. I noticed David's car was gone so I assumed he
was at the safe house taking care of some business with Trey. I soon found
out differently when Rhys and Trey were standing by the door as soon as we
entered. Alex motioned for the three others to follow him upstairs and I
went into my office and put the envelope into the safe where it would only
have to come out just one more time and hopefully, remained sealed.

A few minutes later Phillip announced that lunch was served and I then
learned from Trey that Dave was at the safe house taking care of a problem
between two of the residents. The rest of the day went by very quietly.

Two days later, I was at the appointment with the counselor hoping I could
sign Alex's papers requesting his adoption. I had my trusty manila envelope
with me and it seemed I was the person they were waiting on. I was ushered
in and took a seat then the counselor began to speak. He said, "Ms. Daniels
you are here to voluntarily terminate your parental rights to your son Alex
Daniels, Age 14. He has been living with Mr. Davis who has temporary legal
custody of the minor child. Mr. Davis, you are here to ask the court that
your temporary custody be changed so that you can legally adopt Alex. Is
this all correct?"

I nodded my head to him but the woman just sat there silent for several
minutes. She finally broke her silence saying, "I don't know about this. I
have it on good authority that I can get Alex back with just one short
hearing."

My heart jumped into my throat for a moment when I heard that and then I
started to get mad. I calmed myself down then said, "Ms. Daniels, I
shouldn't have to remind you of our meeting last month. I should also inform
you that in here I have concrete proof that both boys Andrew and Alex are
indeed brothers. Not half brothers mind you, but full blood brothers whose
mother and father are the same. Now Madam, I think the court would be very
interested to hear that considering he was shuttled around until you finally
decided to give him up for adoption. I'm sure the court would have no
problem in ordering those records unsealed so that they can compare your
signature. Need I say any more?"

Once again she was speechless. She held her head down during the several
minutes she was quiet. I could tell by her actions that she knew she was
beat. She raised her head saying, "Very well, I will sign the papers. I also
know that there is a statement attesting to that fact that I agree to allow
and recommend Mr. Davis adopts Alex. I still want you all to know that I am
a good person and none of you may never understand why I did what I did."

She took her papers and signed them in front of a notary. I then signed my
papers and they were duly notarized. Finally the woman signed the papers
agreeing to my adoption of Alex. Now all that was left was to have the
hearing and Alex would then become my son. I had the counselor put in a
formal request for name change on Alex. I had learned later that Alex would
sometimes use his middle name William as a sir name and make it Williams.

We finished our business then I spoke with the counselor in private for a
few minutes. I asked him why was there a delay with Rhys' adoption and I was
informed that once this matter with Alex began, he thought we could handle
everything at once. I thought about what he said and it did seem the logical
thing to do. I shook his hand and then headed home. He said before I left
that I would know something in about a week to ten days. I told everyone
what transpired and then said I didn't have to reveal the results of the
blood test. The fact that I was claiming to have in my hand the proof I was
claiming was good enough for her and she signed the papers. I told Rhys that
his adoption would be handled at the same time as Alex's. He was happy with
that, knowing that he and his lover would both be adopted on the same day.

Time once again began to drag on for all of us. I even tried spending time
in the office but that only made things worse because I wasn't with the
boys. Late on Thursday, the phone rang and it was the counselor. He
apologized for calling so late but he got a date for the hearing and it was
the very next day. When I asked if Ms. Daniels could be there, she said she
would. I hung up the phone and was going to tell everyone when Phillip said
that supper was being served. I thought this would be a good time to inform
everyone.

I saw five guys coming down the stairs very quietly as was the scene for the
past several days. I know the waiting was getting to them but I hope this
news would cheer them all up. The meal was served and we began eating when I
said, "Guys, I have something here that I know should cheer you all up.
Tomorrow at 10 AM, we're all to be at the court building for the adoption
hearing of Alex and Rhys."

I couldn't say another word with all the cheers and tears that were going
on. Once they had settled down, I informed them that they would need to be
dressed fittingly for this and they all agreed that they would be. I told
Dave, Trey and Andrew that I expected them to be there and I was told that
wild dogs would not be able to keep them away. We finished our meal with
conversation going. Something that was sadly missing and something that I
was very glad was back. After supper we watched a few DVD's and I noticed
that the boys were getting sleepy on their own. After the last movie ended,
I sent them off to bed while Dave and I relaxed for a few minutes before
retiring ourselves. It only took a few minutes then we both were more than
ready for sleep. We did our nightly routines then cuddled for a few
additional minutes before we drifted off to sleep.

I was awoken at seven by two very excited boys. I knew that the judge
signing the papers wasn't written in stone and he could go against all the
recommendations, but that was something that was rarely done and I wasn't
going to tell the boys this and have them start moping again. I scooped my
two youngest into my arms and laid them beside me so I could cuddle with
them. This was something I didn't do very much so I enjoyed every chance I
got. We were cuddling when Dave awoke needing to empty his bladder. He
quickly did this then came back to bed to get in on the festivities. Dave
has never interfered with my time here with the boys but this was one time
he was more than welcome.

He could see his family becoming permanent and he was happy for them also. I
noticed Rhys spoon against Dave and he enjoyed being held by him. After a
few minutes, Alex wanted to cuddle with him and they quickly changed places.
At seven-thirty, Phillip knocked then came in. He was greeted with two
little heads peeking out looking at him. He just smiled and went to set our
clothes out for our trip to court. I had to use the bathroom so I told the
others to get their showers and dress then come down to breakfast. After
breakfast, I had a few things to do in the office but for the others, time
once again dragged on.

I finished at nine-thirty and was also told the company limousine was here
to take us to court. I thought this was a special enough occasion so that's
why I used it. We arrived and were met by the counselor and he explained
everything that would be happening. At ten we went into the court where the
bailiff called the court in session. The judge came in and we all remained
standing until he took his seat. He picked up a file, looked at it then
said, "I see before me I have an uncontested petition for adoption. I see
that a Mr. Michael David is petitioning the court to adopt Master Rhys
Jones. Are all parties present?"

I turned around to see if Alex's mother was in the courtroom and they're she
was in the back corner. When the name called finally registered with my
brain, I sucked wind loud enough I thought the judge would say something.
The counselor stood and said, "Mr. William Whitecastle for Mr. Michael
Davis, you honor."

The judge looked up and acknowledged his presence and continued looking at
the file. He looked at Mr. Whitecastle then said; "I see these papers have
been on file with the court for the past five months, why haven't I disposed
of this before now?"

Mr. Whitecastle stood and said, "Your honor, shortly after this matter was
concluded, Mr. Davis began proceedings to adopt another child. I thought it
would be in the interest and the easiest on the court if both matters could
be handled at the same time. I know how precious the courts time is."

The judge looked up and said, "I thank you for that sir, and I do have a
very heavy case load. May we proceed with the first case?"

My counselor remained seated and I thought to myself this man just got
rimmed, sucked and fucked in one smooth move and never batted an eyelash.
This guy really knows how to suck up to a judge, or is it sucks people very
well. I hope Alex's case goes smoothly.

The judge looked at Mr. Whitecastle and said, Alright sir, you may proceed."

He stood and addressed the court saying, "You honor before you we have an
uncontested request for adoption whereby the mother of Master Rhys Jones is
no longer in a position to care for her minor child. Mr. Davis is a man of
means and has loved and cared for Master Jones for the past seven months.
The child has expressed a willingness and desire to have Mr. Davis become
his father permanently. You will notice that an independent agency has
investigated Mr. Davis and interviewed the child and it is their opinion
that the adoption be finalized. You will also notice the child's mother has
also requested that Mr. Davis be allowed to adopt her son. As you can see
you honor, everything here is being done only in the interest of the child."

The judge set the file down and I see he was digesting everything Mr.
Whitecastle had said. He sat there for a few minutes before he looked out to
us and asked, "Is Master Jones in the courtroom?"

Rhys stood, fixed his jacket then said, "Yes your honor, I'm Master Jones."

The judge looked up and saw this well dressed young man the smiled and said,
"I heard what a bunch of adults have said and now I would like to hear from
you. Would you come here and have a seat please?"

Rhys looked at me and I just smiled and nodded my head silently telling him
that he'll be fine. There was something about this judge I liked. I couldn't
put my finger on it exactly but he reminded me a lot of myself. Rhys slid
past me and we touched hands as he passed and went up to the seat beside the
judge.

He stepped up then stopped and looked at the judge. The judge stood with a
Bible and had Rhys put his left hand on it and raise his right. He smiled
softly at him and said, "Do you swear that everything you say here today is
the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So help you God?"

Rhys looked back at him and said, "Yes sir, I do."

The judge had him be seated then began to ask him some questions. His first
one was, "Rhys, do you still want Mr. Davis to be you Daddy?"

Rhys looked at me then quickly turned to look at the judge. He said, "Oh yes
sir your honor, more than anything. He's a good Daddy to me. He loves me and
I'll tell you a secret. He won't let me get away with anything either."

When the judge heard this he asked, "Is he mean to you. Does he paddle you?"

Rhys looked back at him and said, "Oh no sir, he's not mean. He lets me and
my brothers have fun and be kids. But as he told us we're becoming young men
and we need to learn how to act like it. If that is what you call mean, then
I don't want him to be easy and not care about me. Does he paddle me? Yes
sir, a couple of times and it wasn't designed to cause pain, but it was to
get my attention after I wouldn't listen to him. I deserved it and I'm glad
he did. I know he loves me and only wants what's best for me. He's a good
man judge, and I don't ever want to be away from him."

The judge was moved and I saw Rhys wipe his eyes after he spoke. He sat
there for a second then said, "Thank you young man for being very truthful.
I can tell that you love Mr. Davis very much and what you said wasn't out of
a loyalty to him. You may return to your seat beside Mr. Davis." He waited
until Rhys sat back down. He cleared his throat then said, "I have heard
many uncontested adoptions but I don't think except for maybe a handful has
really made the court take a seat and listen to what he had to say knowing
it was from the heart and the truth. Mr. Davis and Master Jones please
stand. I can see that you love this child very much. You have provided for
him and I know you will continue to provide him with and excellent and
loving home. It is the order of this court that Mr. Michael Davis is now the
legal father of Master Rhys Jones. Mr. Davis you may now hug your son. This
case is now closed."

The judge banged his gavel and I leaned to hug Rhys but in his enthusiasm he
jumped into my arms and wrapped his arms around my neck. I put my arm under
his butt to support him and I just stood there for a minute hugging him.
Alex reached over and patted both our backs and I saw him smile lovingly at
his boyfriend and lover. I set Rhys back on his feet and said, "Thank you
your honor. Thank you very much."

We sat back down and the judge said, "I also see before me that Mr. Davis
wishes to adopt Master Alex Daniels and I have read this file also. Normally
when a man wishes to adopt multiple I start to wonder why but not today. I
heard from a young man that his father loves him yet is strict with him for
his own good and realizes it. This shows me that this man is showing his
children love, discipline and all the proper things a boy needs to learn to
become a proper man. I see Master Daniels in the gallery and I have just one
question for him. Son, do you still want Mr. Davis to be your father?"

Alex wrapped his arm around me and looked into my eyes then said, "Oh yes
your honor. I do."

The judge looked at us and said, "Very well, it is the order of this court
that Mr. Michael Davis is the legal father of Master Alex Daniels. It is
further ordered that A1ex William Daniels shall hereby be known as Master
Alex William Davis. Sir, you may hug your son and this court is adjourned."
The judge banged his gavel, stood and came out to us all and shook each of
our hands.

We stood there shaking the judge's hand and talking then we went out into
the hallway. Mr. Whitecastle handed me an envelope with his bill inside and
I handed him one with a check in it for his services. I knew he had a few
more cases to handle so I gathered my children and went down to the car.
Once inside the limo, there were hugs and kisses galore being given by
everyone.

When we arrived back at the house, Andrew carried Alex and Trey carried Rhys
as Dave and I walked arm in arm inside to start our life as a big happy
family.

Epilog

If we were to look into the future, what would we see? Well I'm happy to say
that Andrew and Trey, Alex and Rhys, Dave and I are all still together as
couples.

About a year after the adoption of the young ones was final, Trey and Andrew
became life partners. Trey sill runs the GALS School and is now on the Board
of Directors.

Andrew is still at NetWorld International and was just made Operation's
Manager. He has earned the respect of all the employees and they all up look
to his leadership abilities.

Rhys and Alex are still very much in love and I've heard their sex lives are
growing, as are they. Rhys just turned 15 and is in the 10th grade. He is
growing into a very handsome man. Alex refers to him, as "His Hunk" and I
have to admit, he is. He wants to continue with his education after high
school but isn't sure what he wants to major in so far and that's alright
since he still has time. He works part time at the safe house and I wonder
if his interests are leaning there.

Alex is 17 and is in his final year of high school. He wants to go onto
college so he can learn more of the business. Since working there part time,
the company has really peaked his interests.

I am now retired and my last official act at NetWorld was to name Andrew to
the Board of Directors and name Dave as my successor. When Andrew came
along, I began grooming David for my position and he has also earned the
respect of all the employees.

I spend my days relaxing and keeping busy spending a few hours each day at
the safe house when the boys are in school. Our summers are spent traveling
and just enjoying life as a family. I was in the safe the other day and I
happened to notice a manila envelope there on the very bottom. Have I never
considered opening it? What can a piece of paper tell me that our hearts
can't?
