Chapter One - Off to Cheyenne

Matt's Story

I was nervous. It was the spring semester of my junior year at the
University of Wyoming and I was going to spend it at Carey Junior High
School in Cheyenne working as an aide in English and PE. This was in
preparation for the day I would be student teaching. One day a week,
Mondays, I would meet with my university advisor in Laramie, but other than
that I was going to be living in Cheyenne, where I didn't know a soul and
taking other classes at the Cheyenne satellite campus. It was far from my
comfortable fraternity house and even further from my home in Sheridan.

I walked through the front doors of the red brick school wondering what
this was in store for me. I remembered what a hellion I was in jr. high. I
knew if the 30 little terrorists turned on me there was nothing I could
do. How would they react to me? Would they treat me like a teacher? Like an
adult? Hell, I was less than three years out of high school myself. I was
barely more than a kid myself.

Oh wait, maybe I should introduce myself. I am Matt, Matthew Ryan Kendrick
to be precise. I was born just about 20 years ago in Sheridan Wyoming on a
cold, cold winter day. We lived on a small ranch up against the foothills
of the Big Horn Mountains. It wasn't much of a ranch, my dad was really a
lawyer by trade and mom a school teacher, but they both felt it was
important to run a couple dozen head of cattle to stay in touch with our
heritage. I stand about 5'10", 165 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes. I am
still in pretty good shape even though I have put on a little weight since
the end of wrestling season my senior year of high school. I console myself
with the thought that though I wrestled at 152's as a senior, I played
football at around 160 usually, so maybe it is only 5 extra pounds I've put
on. I also think I am pretty good looking since I always seemed to be
popular with the ladies at Sheridan High and I was seldom without a
girlfriend. I've stayed popular here with the girls, especially the ones
across the way on Sorority Way, but there isn't one special one, just a lot
of dates. Everyone in town always liked to comment on my smile. What they
didn't know was that I smiled a lot because I am really pretty shy and
quiet though my close friends would doubt the quiet part. I never really
knew what to say so I would just smile and shrug and that drives the chicks
wild, they think I am mysterious.

Kid. I'm just a kid, but here I am ready to take my first steps as a
professional educator like my mom.

The entrance of the school was a jumble of activity with students rushing
around and friends greeting friends after being off for the Ski Week that
falls between semesters. No one even gave me a sideways glance.

"Matty!", said a voice to my right.

I turned to see Ginny Mather, the teacher whose aide I will be for the
English classes weaving her way to me. Damn, she hadn't aged a minute in
the six years since I last saw her, still cute as a button Ginny had
student taught in Sheridan with my mom as her master teacher. I had had a
schoolboy crush on her something fierce, but she saw me as just a kid.

"Howdy Miss Mather", I grinned.

"Oh Matt we are colleagues now. I think you can call me Ginny".

"Yes ma'am".

"And certainly no 'ma'ams', I am only seven years older than you".

"Yes ma'...... Ginny" Hey, old habits are hard to break. My parents taught
me well on how to behave and what the rules were for in dealing with
others. "Do Unto Others" was the philosophy I was raised with and that
combined with my raising at the First Congregational Church of Sheridan I
was a pretty polite, humble young guy (if I do say so myself).

"Class starts in about ten minutes; let's drop in the teachers' lounge for
one last slug of caffeine before we have to face the hordes. They have us
outnumbered."

I giggle and say, "I was just thinking that this morning. What do we do if
they turn on us?"

"Oh Matty, they don't have a chance to when you start out very firm, lay
out the rules and enforce them fairly. You know that. It was the first
thing your mom taught me."

"I know, still one's mind can do silly thinks to you." I grinned
sheepishly.

"You'll be fine, the kids will love you and love someone nearer their
age. Do you still read as much as you used to?"

"Oh sure, after I went through all of Louis L'Amour's books when you were
in Sheridan and then I started in on Robert Heinlein and Kurt Vonnegut I
just finished the Bruce Catton series on the Civil War. Now I am halfway
through James Michener's books." I said beaming. I love talking about books
and literature that is why I am majoring in English with History as my
first minor.

"That is what I hope you can do, inspire my kids to get off the Internet
into books like you and your family are."

"I'll do what I can. Maybe it is what they read in school? Maybe if Zane
Grey and L'Amour were reading for guys and Judy Blume was for girls then
they would want to more. I mean Our Town is pretty dated now and I think
Two Years Before the Mast is better than Moby Dick. It is certainly more
readable."

"I know, but the department makes us teach the same books we have for the
last fifty years."

I shrug and Ginny smiles. She gets it, so do I, but the two of us won't
change the world of teaching English; certainly not in Wyoming. We head
into the teachers' lounge and Ginny introduces me around. Several of the
teachers know my mom; they met her at different conferences here in the
state. A few even look familiar to me as I've gone with Mom to places like
Gillette and Jackson for the meetings. Gillette is nothing to write home
about, but Jackson is awesome, an old West town with amazing snowboarding
and skiing.

We head to her first class, an 8th grade English class, I suck in my
breath, this is it, my first foray into professional education.

"Class, this is Mr. Kendrick, he will be with us this semester as my
aide. I expect you to show Mr. Kendrick the same courtesy you would me."

Crap. No one has ever called me 'Mr. Kendrick' before, that isn't even my
dad, he is just Tom, Mr. Kendrick is my grandfather. I smile weakly and
lift my hand. I am terrified. The faces all smile. A few of the girls
really straighten up and smile big. Oh great. One of the boys raises his
hand.

"Yes Tom?" Ginny asks.

"Aren't you Matt Kendrick from Sheridan High?"

"Yes I am." Is all I can say, slightly taken aback.

"I'm Tom McAllister, Tim is my brother. You played for Sheridan High when
they beat Cheyenne East three years ago."

"Oh sure, I know Tim well. He is in the Sigma Nu house, just two doors down
from me. We hang out sometimes, nice to meet you Tom."

"Rachel?" Ginny says.

"I am Rachel Lindquist, you wrestled my brother John at state and he is
with you at Wyoming now too."

"Oh my gosh, you're Rachel! John is two doors down from me in the SAE
house! He talks about you and Sonja all the time."

This might be ok. These kids are just little people and Wyoming is so
small, I might have connections with a bunch of them. Ginny sets me to
work grading the test they just had on Hawthorne's, The House of the Seven
Gables. The test is a mix of multiple choice, fill-in the blank and mini
essay; some of the answers are downright comical. Was I like this when I
was 13? There are some really good papers too. This one by Tony Palatzo has
great insight for a 13 or 14 year old. Where does he sit? He is the dark
haired boy with olive skin over there. Hmmm he looks familiar, name sounds
familiar too.

I go back to grading and then I get an odd feeling of being watched. I look
up and there are at least three sets of eyes on me. Tom was looking at me,
the pretty blonde next to Rachel was too and so was a boy next to Tom, just
in front of Tony. I check the seating chart Ginny gave me, his name is
Blake Burroughs, cute kid. I wonder why he was looking at me. The girl next
to Rachel is Barbara Metz. She is cute too, but looks like she knows
it. This is going to be an interesting semester.

Blake's Story

The start of another semester, I can't wait for stinking summer already and
I am really ready for football, baseball is cool, but football is where it
is at. I am so tired and bored here I could scream! I wonder who that is
with Miss Mather.

"Class, this is Mr. Kendrick, he will be with us this semester as my
aide. I expect you to show Mr. Kendrick the same courtesy you would me."

Holy crap that is Matt Kendrick! I remember the state football championship
when Tom's brother was playing at East. Matt was all over the field. He had
like 12 tackles, two sacks, an interception for a touchdown and a blocked
punt! Tom's brother Tim talked about him after the game too. He said it was
the hardest he had ever been hit. It was that game that made me want to be
a linebacker and it was Matt I wanted to be like. CRAP! I can't believe he
is here, that is so cool.

"This is the first day of the semester so we are going to start a new book
today. Mr. Kendrick is going to grade the last papers you did and I want
you all to start reading in your literature books on page 320, it is the
first three chapters of The Diary of Anne Frank. I'll pass out your full
versions tomorrow."

I start reading. The story is pretty interesting, but I am still distracted
by Matt. I look up and study him a bit. He really isn't that big, 5'10" or
so, maybe 170, but his biceps are way buff, his shirt is pretty tight on
his chest and it looks buff too. He is wearing dress slacks and his legs
look really muscled out, when he moves I can see them ripple an.... oh
crap, he looked up at me and caught me staring at him. He probably thinks I
am a creepy little kid now. Crap, crap, crap. This is going to be an
interesting semester.
