Chapter Seven: Brad's Idol

On Thursday we caught the early bird to Charlotte, North Carolina,
picked up a car, and after a three-hour drive through the Blue Ridge, we
were in Cherokee. The town, on first sight, appears to be your typical
tourist attraction trap. However, the town is built on the Cherokee
Reservation, which is protected by treaty. There's a living historical
village that's like none seen in the schoolbooks.

We stayed at a local motel on the Oconaluftee River. Our room had
a king size bed plus a refrigerator. We had a balcony with rocking chairs
over the river. The room was on the very inside, which gave us a privacy
wall. Next to the motel was Oconaluftee Island Park, named for the island
that split the crystal clear waters of the river. This is where all the
locals brought their kids to swim and play; the park also had pavilions and
cook out areas.

The river was so clear we could look over the rail and count the stones
lining the river bottom. Promotional material said the stones washed down
from the mountains and had been made smooth with years of exposure to the
running waters. The river itself differed in another way from those I was
accustomed to seeing back home; for the most part it was shallow and had a
strong current, often being no more than knee deep and it was cold! I was
accustomed to the warm waters of Florida; this river was fed by mountain
springs. It didn't seem to bother the local kids and took me only a couple
of dips to learn to go underwater first thing and make the adjustment.
Besides, if I complained too much to Uncle Ray I never would have heard the
end of what a wimp I was being.

The first afternoon we made a trip to the grocery for breakfast and lunch
foods, and good snack junk foods, we kept in the room. Uncle Ray was
willing to bet I would spend most of my time in the river swimming or
tubing. I wouldn't make the bet with him 'cause I knew who would lose. We
also located several local restaurants for supper each evening, but I let
him know I didn't want to spend all my time in restaurants if we didn't
have to, I'd rather be outside. Besides, going out to eat every night also
meant having to come in and dress; cutoffs and nothing else should be good
24/7. Driving through town we spotted a lot of stores for getting
souvenirs, a museum that sold Cherokee hand made artifacts, directions to
the village and the play theater, stages where natives demonstrated native
dances, and where to go panning for gold and other jewels.

We got back to the motel around mid-afternoon. After we unloaded the car I
changed to cutoffs and headed for the river. The kids were friendly and it
was easy to join a group rough housing in the water -- two of the boys were
real Indians. One of the boys, Jesse, was staying in the same motel and
was only three rooms down from ours. We struck it off and now I had a
friend to play with. Aside from the cold water the other thing I noticed
immediately was that the stones may have looked smooth, but they hurt.
Half way across the river I was looking for a way out. With these kinds of
problems I usually jumped on Uncle Ray's back and let him carry me out of
there, but this time I had to work it out on my own. I looked up towards
the room and saw Uncle Ray propped against the rail; he just smiled and
waved at me, thanks a lot. Rather than back track I moved ahead, it
couldn't be any worse, and it wasn't. After playing for a while I heard
Uncle Ray call, I didn't know what time it was but could tell the sun had
moved down in the sky. Rather than fight the rocks going back, one of the
boys showed me where I could swim across and hardly have to touch bottom.
I took his advice. Jesse stayed out playing. I was only a little
downstream of the motel and the walk along the riverbank was a lot easier.

When I got to the room I was cold, I was a walking mass of goose bumps.
Uncle Ray had gone to KFC, so we were eating in. When I looked at him he
reminded me I didn't want to waste time in the restaurant. I dropped the
wet cutoffs and wrapped myself in a warm blanket. When he told me I should
get a warm bath after eating I let him know I wanted to go back out as long
as there was kids to play with. He didn't care as long as I didn't
complain about how cold I was. Jesse and I played more and didn't
complain, but it was cold. Also, this time I wore water shoes we had
picked up for the rafting trip. The shoes made it a lot easier to walk on
the river bottom. We stopped when Jesse's parents called him in.

Uncle Ray was sitting on the balcony holding a cup of coffee. He was
wearing only a pair of shorts and is hair was wet so I guessed he already
had his bath. "I'm gonna get a bath and warm up, I'll be back in a few."

"Okay, I'll be right here. I set your bubble bath on ..."

"Uncle Ray!!!... don't say that so loud."

"Sorry, I put your special soap on the side of the tub. How's that?" I
smiled and nodded. "Brad, when you come out how about if your not
completely au natural?" How'd he know I was thinking about that?

I decided to pass on the tub and took a nice hot shower. When the outside
felt as warm as the inside I got out, dried off a little and grabbed a pair
of my new jogging shorts that I modified. When we went clothes shopping
the previous weekend. I got two pairs of jogging shorts and two pairs of
sleeping shorts. Uncle Ray knew that dad and I often walked around the
apartment in our underwear and he thought if someone came to the door it
might be better if I was wearing boxers or sleeping shorts rather than
tighty whities. Another thing about sleeping shorts, these weren't made of
silk, no way would I wear that, but it was some kind of polished shiny
material that felt great on your skin.

The jogging shorts were made with a liner that I called built in underwear.
I decided to modify them by cutting the liner completely out of one pair.
On the second pair the seams were a little different for some reason so I
just cut out the rear portion, leaving the front to support the family
jewels, nothing over the butt except the seam which split the crack, and of
course the shorts material itself. The pair I grabbed this time was the
pair with the liner completely cut out. The other modification was to cut
the seam about a third of the way up the side. Wrapping my towel around my
shoulders I headed out to the balcony and climbed into Uncle Ray's lap.

"We can't say bubble bath, but it's okay for you to want me to finish
drying you?" He said this while looking to make sure I wasn't naked. I
told him I wouldn't come out that way.

"Yeah... bubble bath is sissy; drying is attention and feels good."

When he finished drying me he let the towel just fall to his lap behind me.
I was straddling his lap as usual and moved closer leaning against his
chest; he started rubbing my back while drinking his coffee. He put one of
his hands down next to my hip and then gave me a funny questioning look,
and I knew why. Before he asked I told him I cut the liner out so it'd be
easier for him to scratch my butt. He looked at the shorts and thought I
couldn't have cut much more off and still be able to go out with them; that
meant I did leave enough to be able to go out with them. I just smiled and
reminded him I wasn't naked and then wiggled my butt in his hand.

"Kid, have I told you lately how spoiled you're getting?"

"Noooo, but that's okay; I'm worth it, aren't I?" A few minutes later I
heard someone call my name.

"Hey..Brad...."

"Yeah.... Hey Jesse. Jesse this is my Uncle Ray. Uncle Ray, Jesse."

"Hi Jesse"

"Hi...I came to ask Brad if he wanted to get an ice cream from next door."

I looked at Uncle Ray. "Who all's going?"

"It'd be just us. Mom and Dad gave me this.." Jesse holds out an air horn
"...if anyone tries to bother us I just push the button and it sounds real
loud. They wouldn't let me go alone 'cept it's right next door."

"Okay, but put on a shirt, most places won't let you walk in without one.
If the two of you aren't back in just a few minutes I'm going to come
looking. Just be careful. Brad, you know the usual spiel."

I put on a t-shirt that was so long I looked like I didn't have any pants
on. Jesse was standing there watching but I didn't care. I thought about
going out this way but decided against it, no sense pushing the luck too
early with Uncle Ray. I dropped the jogging shorts and grabbed a pair of
cutoffs and sneakers. Uncle Ray gave me five bucks and we were off. We
each got a cone and instead of walking back the way we came, we walked
around behind the building and followed the shoreline. We skipped some
rocks while eating our cones. I looked up and saw Uncle Ray, he was
talking to someone. Jesse looked up and said it was his dad. We knew they
both saw us and could also hear us, so we didn't rush to get back to the
rooms.

When we got back to the room it was bedtime. Uncle Ray and I went in and
stripped, he turned out the light and lay down, and I climbed on top. I
sat there looking down at him and then just lay down on top. He gently
rubbed my back for a few minutes and lightly ran his finger up and down my
crack a few times. When I raised my head and smiled at him he said we
weren't getting started tonight. He rolled me to his side with my back up
against him. I rolled over to face him and wrapped my arms around his
neck.

"Uncle Ray...thanks."

He gave me a big squeeze and flipped me back over, pulling me up against
him. I slipped into a deep sleep.

Friday morning, after breakfast on the balcony, we headed out for tickets
to the village and theater. The village was a duplicate of a mid-1700s
Cherokee settlement and didn't look anything like we saw in movies,
television, or books. Everything I had seen before said Indians ran around
half naked and lived in teepees. Little boys ran around naked all the time
and didn't wear a cloth until about ten or eleven. Well, not this group.
The Cherokee, later called the Eastern Band of Cherokee, lived in houses
made from clay or wood constructed for long-term use. They planted crops
for food and medicine, trapped fish and small animals. On television they
lived in teepees, went on big hunts for buffalo, spear fished, and moved
often.

The tribe consisted of seven clans, each known for its skills in a
particular area. The Blue Clan produced medicines for the children; the
Deer Clan was known for swift hunters; the Long Hair produced peace chiefs
while the Wolf Clan produced the war chiefs. Additional clans included the
Bird Clan known for trapping small animals; the Paint Clan that made
medicine from red clay to treat adults; and the Wild Potato or Blind
Savannah Clan that gathered edibles along the riverbank. Representatives
of the seven clans elected the chief of the tribe -- there were no linear
chieftains. On television and the movies the chief's son was always the
next in line. I always wondered what they did if the chief's son turned
out to be a wimp - that wasn't a concern with this tribe.

Touring the village we saw demonstrations of weaving, fishing, trapping,
use of the dart gun, making of arrowheads and canoes, and family life.
There was also a separate area with a functioning herb garden and a
vegetable garden. What we saw on this tour and what I had seen on
television and books was like opposite sides of a coin. The Cherokee were
the first Indian tribe to have a written language. Sequoyah, a Cherokee
warrior born of a Cherokee woman and a white fur trader named Gist
developed their language. His dictionary of the Cherokee language was
known as the "Talking Leaves".

When leaving the village we passed through a souvenir shop. Many of the
items were handmade by the locals while other items were verified Indian
products which means they came from Indians living in other parts of the
country. I kept looking at the necklaces or chokers made by the women to
protect their men from harm and disease. I saw a couple that I liked but
when I looked at the price I didn't feel right asking Uncle Ray to get me
one. Well, Uncle Ray actually did me one better.

Uncle Ray was talking to the chief that spoke to us in the communal square.
He had explained the meanings of the masks and how the square was aligned
with the four directions. The berm surrounding the center area was to
protect the sacred dancing area where people danced to offer their prayers
to a higher spirit. The chief introduced Uncle Ray to the lady we saw
making the necklaces. The lady and chief approached me with Uncle Ray and
asked me several questions about my age, birth date, things I liked or was
afraid of; they asked Uncle Ray about my normal disposition. The chief
explained with this information they could determine my animal spirit
protector and a necklace or choker could be made specially to protect me
from evil. The choker was made with a unique design for me; it fastened
around my neck with leather thongs on each end. We didn't pick it up until
the next afternoon, I have no idea what Uncle Ray paid for it, but I have
it to this day and will never part with it.

The tour took all morning and part of the afternoon. We headed back to the
motel for some lunch and were then going out to pan for gold. Uncle Ray
said we would need to rest after that because the play "Unto These Hills"
didn't start until 8:00 and would last till almost 11:00; plus we had to
get moving early the next morning for rafting. We sat on the balcony with
a sandwich, drink and chips. Not wanting to waste time we kept it simple
and I could swallow a sandwich pretty fast. While eating we saw Jesse's
dad approaching their room. Before going in he looked at Uncle Ray and
gave him a thumbs up sign -- I knew something was going on. When I asked
Uncle Ray he said nothing, but the way he said it meant something.

Panning for gold wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. The sign out
front advertised a gold mine. I thought we would get to go inside and dig
for gold. Someone had already done the digging and put the dirt in bags
and buckets of varying sizes. Panning meant we had to purchase a bucket or
bag of dirt. We were given a filter screen and tin pan that looked a lot
like a pie tin. You poured the dirt into the box with the filter with the
tin placed below that to catch the small stuff. The attendant showed us
what kind of stones to look for. I was surprised how many stones we pulled
out of the two bags. Of course, if they didn't have it set so each person
could pull a number of stones, I doubt they would stay in business long.
Was there a catch to all this?.. you bet.

After retrieving the stones we took them inside to be evaluated by a
jeweler. The jeweler separated the good stones from the souvenirs. What
they wanted was to sell a package where they cut, polished and mounted the
stones. Uncle Ray said the prices they charged would bring the cost almost
up to the cost he'd pay at a jewelry store back home. The man did separate
the good from the not so good. It happens we had a nice sized stone he
identified as a raw ruby. Personally, I was not then nor am I now into
wearing polished rubies. As we left Uncle Ray said he had an idea.

We drove down the street to a souvenir shop that had a jewelers sign
posted. Uncle Ray had them clean, but not polish, and mount the raw stone
using a thin gold wire. At the top the jeweler put on a small cone shaped
cap that he fitted over a portion of the wire. There was a small hole in
the center of the cap to allow the wire to pass through. Then he took the
piece of wire sticking out of the top, twisted it into a circle and then
wrapped the extra around the base of the circle. After all this he applied
a clear liquid that I'm sure was a jewelers glue. When all this dried he
ran a leather thong through the hook and tied the necklace around my
neck. (I still have that one too, but plan on giving it away in about eight
and a half years.)

I kept pestering Uncle Ray to tell me what he and Jesse's dad were doing.
I knew something was up, but he kept denying it; I knew from experience
sometimes its better not to push and just go along for the ride. Usually
when Uncle Ray did something like this it turned out to be nice.

By the time we got back to the hotel we were both hot and soaked in sweat.
I told Uncle Ray I wanted to jump in the river and cool off. He suggested
I just sit on the balcony for a little while and not get tired because we
would be out late tonight. He hinted at a nap. I had forgotten about that
and decided to take a cool shower and lie down for a few minutes. When I
walked into the room Uncle Ray was already stripping. Waiting a few
minutes, I stripped and then jumped into the shower with him. After drying
off, and I even dried myself for the most part, he lay down on the bed and
I jumped in after him. I put one arm over a shoulder and the other under
his arm and squeezed.

"Love you, Uncle Ray."

"Love you, too, kid."

"Uncle Ray?"

"Yeah..."

"Let's play.."

"Am I supposed to guess what?"

"You know....let's play horny toad."

Suddenly, without even answering, he flipped me on my back and got on top.
He grabbed both arms and stretched them over my head while hooking his feet
over my legs. There was no way I could move except to squirm under him.
Each time I tried to tell him to get off I couldn't finish because of the
giggles. He reached down and started giving me raspberries. First, on
each side of my neck and then under each arm. He did this several times,
moving from one spot to another. I was giggling so hard I started
drooling. Then he started moving down. He would give me a raspberry on my
nipple and then suck on it, moving from one side to the other. Then he
began moving down my side and back up the middle.

"Uncle Ray...stoooooop,....ohhhhh Gaaaaahhhhhhdd, don't ... don't...
aaaaahhhh... mooooore,...do it some moooore,....ohhhhh Gaaaahhhhhd..." I
would cry out for him to stop or don't and he knew it really meant don't
stop and do more. This was heavenly, it felt great.

Then he shifted down and let go of my arms, placing his hands on the side
of my chest. I reached down with my hands, placing them on his head and
started pushing him further down. He kept on giving me raspberries and was
running the tips of his fingers lightly over my sensitive skin. I kept
moaning and whimpering.

"mmmmmmpppphh....uugggghhhhh ... don't stooooop... mooore ....ohhhhh
Gaaaahhhhhdd ... yeeeessssss...yeeeessss .... ohhhhh.. gaaaahhhhdd
...mmpphh .. mmmmmmmm ....ow!...(he just pinched my nip) ...oooooohh"

"Want me to stop?'

"Noooooo! ... do moooore ....ohhhhhh gaaaaahhhdd .... it feels soooo
goooood.." I just kept whimpering.

He kept moving to my lower abdomen. Each time he gave me a raspberry I'd
shriek and giggle even harder. He started working his way along the crease
where my leg met the rest of my body. I couldn't believe how sensitive it
was. Sometimes he'd give me a raspberry and sometimes he would dart his
tongue in and out and tickle me. Then I couldn't believe what he did next,
he licked the area at the base of my little prick.

"AAAAAHHHHH!!! ....OOOOOHHHHH ..GAAAAHHHHDD, that's unreal!"

Then he did it again and I grabbed two fistfuls of hair and held him there.

"Do it again.... Again ...., oooohhh yyeeeaaaaahh ....ooohhhh maaaannn ...
mooore ...mooooore...."

Then he reached down and kissed the sensitive area between my balls and my
leg. I went ape. I have no idea how long this lasted but when he stopped
I was pleasantly exhausted. I don't know how many I times I hit that magic
moment, or even if I did, 'cause it all felt like magic to me. He lay down
next to me, pulling me hard up against his stomach and sliding his left arm
under my head. Rubbing his fingers through my hair he told me to rest and
I slipped off to dream land.

I heard the alarm, but at the same time I didn't hear it. When Uncle Ray
slapped my butt and said we had to go I opened my eyes. He was standing
next to the bed pulling out clothes for the play. I got up on my knees,
reached around his neck, and gave him a big kiss on the cheek.

The play was the history of the Cherokee peoples from their creation
according to tribal legend to the division of the tribe with The Trail of
Tears. The Eastern Band of Cherokee are mostly descendants of those who
escaped from the military and hid in the woods to avoid relocation. If you
talk to the people attending the play you hear many different reasons for
the relocation, and there was some pretty strong debates going on. Was it
for the land to plant more cotton? Was it for the gold found in the hills?
Was it for the president to expand the powers of his office? No one has
provided an answer acceptable to the majority in over one hundred fifty
years. The debate will most likely continue for years to come.

It was late when we got back to the motel and we had to get up early so we
just shed our clothes and crawled back into bed. I think I fell asleep
before he finished wrapping his arm around me.

I still didn't know what he and Jesse's dad were up to, but I knew they
were up to something.
