Coincidence or Faith Chapter 7

Recap: A man, Adam meets a boy, Tim, met on top of a cliff, where both had
gone to kill themselves for one reason or another. After talking, they go
back to Adam's house, where they fall asleep to be awakened by a noise,
which turned out to be Adam's dad, Don. They went and ate, then Adam tells
Don how he met Tim and that he was going to kill himself and why. After
talking the whole thing through it was decided to they should talk to Bill,
a lawyer friend of Don's, which they did. On Bill's advice, they decided
that Tim should call his aunt and record what is said. And so here we are.

"Hello, Aunt Beth. It's me Tim......" Tim says meekly.

"Tim? What do you want?" Beth is the brusque reply.

"Um. I wanted to know if I could come home now?" Tim replied.

"Home? This is no longer your home." Beth says, "Don't you remember what I
said you stupid boy."

"B-but where am I to go?" Tim says, "Can I at least get some of my clothes
and stuff?"

"You don't have anything here to get." Beth says, "As for where to go, you
know where fags go, straight to hell."

"B-but Aunt Beth...." Tim started to protest but was cut off.

"I'm not your aunt no more. I'm hanging up now and you better not evercall
back here, do you understand." Beth says and then hangs up before Tim had a
chance to say anything further.

As Tim hangs up the phone, he starts to cry. Even though she is a bitch she
was still his only family and what she did to him hurt a lot. Adam pulls
Tim into a hug and comforts him as much as he can. After Tim settles down
some, Adam put's him in the car, and checks to make sure the conversation
was recorded then gets in the car himself after putting up the
equipment. Once done, they headed back home to give Bill a call and let him
what they had.

Once they got at home, Adam has a couple of messages on his answering
machine. One from his friend Mike, a fellow boylover, wishing him luck and
the other from Bill asking to give him a call as soon as possible. After
the important task of getting them both a Dr.  Pepper, they settled down
and Adam makes the call. After a few minutes of being put on hold by the
secretary, Bill comes on the phone with:.

"Adam, I'm glad you called." Bill says, "I believe I have some good news."

"Really that's great. So do we." Adam says.

"OK, well you first then." Bill says hardly believing they could both have
good news.

"Well, me and Tim just got back from making the call to Beth." Adam says,
"It went just like we thought it would. She was very clear on kicking Tim
out and not permitting him to come back and it's all on tape. I hope this
is all over soon, but it also hurt Tim to hear it all again too."

"That's good that you got it on tape. It'll help in the long run." Bill
says, "And as for it being over soon, we might just get you temporary
custody today."

"Oh my god. Really? How?" Adam saying very excitingly.

Tim hearing Adam's excitement comes over and asks "What's going on?"

"Hold on a sec and I'll tell you when Bill is done." Adam says to Tim and
returning to talk to Bill. But then seeing the look on Tim's face and he
asks Bill to hold a sec while he switches to a speaker phone. "Bill you
there?" Adam says.

"Yeah." Bill said.

"OK, now tell Tim what you just told me." Adam said.

"Well as I was telling Adam, I believe that we may be able to get temporary
custody of you to Adam today." Bill says to Tim and then to both, "Now I
know you want to know how so I'll explain.  Now I know someone who knows
someone in Child Welfare. I gave her a call and asked, hypothetically
speaking of course, what could be done in a situation like yours. She said
if you, Adam, have a clean record, and good solid references then you could
become eligible as an emergency foster care provider. This would mean that
Tim could be placed in your custody, but he has to go into the
system. While you have Tim, you'd have to apply to become a regular foster
parent to get Tim on a permanent basis."

Tim and Adam just look at each other in stunned silence until Bill says,
"Are yaw still there?"

That shook them out of their stare and Adam replies, "Yeah. We're still
here. Just can't believe this. I don't know what to say. Yes I do. How soon
can we do it? Are you sure it'll work?"

"Well we can start as soon as we hang up, and it's about our only choice
right now." Bill says, "I tell you what. I'll give her a call and see about
setting things up and you get together a list of references who will help
you, like your dad, co-workers and anyone who knows you and might be
listened too if you know them. And then I'll call you back and let you know
what she says."

"OK, I'll do that. Talk to you in a few." Adam says and gets a bye from
Bill before hanging up.

After they hang up Adam and Tim chatted a bit before Adam starts making a
list of those he thinks would help. His dad of course and Josh. Mr. Warner,
the local High School principle. Adam had helped Mr. Warner out with the
schools computers awhile back and still does when needed and they came to
be friends. So he's on the list, as Adam thought, "It was a good thing I
didn't send him that email." Adam added a few friends and co-workers, along
with Gary Smith too. He's the police chief for their town. He was really a
friend of his dad's but Adam helped his son out with a computer when he
went to college and has spent time at his house for BBQs and such.

"OK, that should do it. Now we just wait for Bill to call." Adam says to
Tim and they decided to watch T.V. to pass the time and wait for Bill's
call.

After about an hour of watching T.V. and getting a few phone calls, none of
which weren't Bill but rather friends and telemarketers, the phone rang
again; and this time it was Bill. Bill asked for the names and phone
numbers of those Adam chose as references. After he got them, he told Adam
that he was giving those over to Mrs. White, the Social Worker. She would
give a couple of them calls and get back to him and then she'll want to see
both Adam and Tim in person for a interview, after which if all went well
Adam would get temporary custody on an emergency basis for now.  Bill ended
the call by saying "It will take probably another hour so just wait at the
house for another me to phone back. I know it's hard to wait but just be
patience."  After that they hung up and Adam told Tim what was going on and
so they waited again.

Since they were going to have to wait again, Adam decided to pop a pizza in
the oven for lunch.  They pretty much ate and sat waiting the whole time in
silence, both too nervous to really say anything. When the phone rang about
an ninety minutes later, they both actually jumped. Adam picked up the
phone and says, "Hello?"

"Hey, it's me Bill. She just gave me a call and wants to meet at your place
in half an hour."  Bill says, "I'm going to pick her up and drive her
over. So be there.  Hehe."

They talked a couple of minutes more and then hung up. Adam told Tim what
was said again and they decided to make sure the place was cleaned up, an
easy chore as Adam was a bachelor his place was kept pretty tidy most of
the time. They also decided that if asked that Tim has been sleeping on the
couch the whole time. About half an hour later, there's a knock at the
door. Adam goes to open it and see's Bill and someone partially hidden
behind him.

"Adam, I liked to introduce...." Bill says while moving aside.

He didn't get to finish because when Adam saw the old woman standing there
he exclaimed in a stunned and excited voice, "Mrs. White."
