"Are you Ok David" the man asked "Yeah" replied David although his look and demeanor said otherwise. Ike right nearby put his arm over his shoulder and gave him a squeeze "It'll be ok you'll see" Joe smiled but looked a bit uncomfortable. "Ike we can probably get through this as David is 16 and you didn't force him or at least it can't be proven that you had any adverse influence over David but you can be assured that the Police will be watching you." Ike nodded, he figured even if neither Dan nor Em did or said anything he would be a person of interest to the police for a while anyway. Joe continued "They told me they are not going to charge you at this time because of a couple of things. They are still looking at the position of authority and influence clause and the fact that David is sixteen. If he was fourteen or fifteen you would probably be behind bars right now. But you have to be careful Ike" "We'll be careful Joe, don't worry" "That is what worries me Ike, that you are a talking 'we'. You are not of the woods on this, Your wife, his folks can still make a lot of trouble for you. Not only that but you and David may have to think about not being seen together" "Why Joe? You want me to kick him out? His own folks have disowned him. If they have nothing to charge us with then that must mean that what we were doing together was not a crime. Joe you might not agree with David and I loving each other but that is the way it is and I am not going to turn him out on the street. I'm the only one he has right now." "Children's Aid may have something to say about that." Joe mused "But it would have to come to their attention first would it not? I have not had any other direction from David's parents or anyone else to say that accommodation arrangements for David have changed. He was put in my charge at the beginning of the summer that is the way it will stay." Ike said with some finality to his voice. A little softer he added "Just let me take care of it Joe OK. Trust me no harm will come to him." Joe just nodded and a few minutes later he got up and left the two, saying he would be in touch. Neither David nor Ike said anything for a moment. Then Ike picked up the phone and dialled. "EM? Please don't hangup" David looked up with a start. Ike was calling Emily! "Em " Ike said more slowly and gently "Can we please talk? I know I don't deserve even that but I.. uh. we really need to talk, please?" "I'm at the office. Dan has disowned David Em,, I doubt that Gail had a lot of say in it but they dropped him off at the Sally Ann." "No, no he called me and he is here at the office." They met in the middle of the office and Ike enveloped David in a hug and they kissed. Whether they were aware of it or not, both men were shaking as half ton pulled up beside Em's car. They all got out of their respective vehicles. Ike walked over to Emily and before she could resist took her into his arms. "I am so so sorry" he sobbed into her neck. "Let's go into the house" Em said huskily. Ike gave her, her keys back. She hesitated but he insisted. Em went into the kitchen and sat down heavily at the kitchen table just staring blankly at Ike and David who had followed her in. The tension in the house was palpable. David and Ike entered the room cautiously. Ike's heart went out to his wife when he saw her tear stained face staring up at him in what looked like total misery. He ran over to her and pulled her up into his arms. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry Em" he cried as he rocked her in his arms. They both sobbed as they stood there. His whole life was in turmoil, coming apart at the seams. In the kitchen Ike and Em stood for a long time silently in each other's arms. After a while Em pulled away and led Ike into the living room. Thy sat down and Emily looking in Ike's eyes said "Ike I love you so much but this hurts so, what you and David." Her voice trailed off. "Oh Em you have to believe that I love you Sweetheart, I wish I could explain it, but I love David too. He paused and then softly added "I'm gay Em, I guess I always knew but hoped it wasn't true, but it is" "I don't understand Ike" Em started to cry again "Why don't you just stop being gay? You say you love me but . I just don't understand" "I don't really understand it either Em" replied Ike holding her close to him and kissing her head. "I just know that I didn't choose to be gay, Em I never wanted to be but I am. I don't understand it but I can't just turn it off. When I met David that first time I knew Em. I knew that there was something in him that I wanted. I couldn't figure it out at the time but as we got to know each other better I was more and more drawn to him." Emily just sobbed as she sat there listening trying to understand what her husband was saying to her. All that she had been taught in the church over the years on the subject had been negative. In university she had seen some other insights in to the subject but at the time she had just dismissed it as some "liberal, anti-christian" teaching. But now she was confronted with the actual fact, the real thing. Her husband was telling her that he was a homosexual and not only that but that he loved her cousin. She had caught them together in bed in the very act! How could this make any sense at all? Ike's mind raced over everything that was going on. What could he tell her? He loved her that was true but he knew that he also loved David. How could that be? Why could he not just stop being gay like Em suggested? She was right; nothing made sense. He just couldn't understand it himself. How could he possible explain it to his wife? "Em? What are we going to do?" "I don't know Ike, I don't know." They sat quietly for several minutes in each other's arms. "We should see to David" Em said presently "Did Dan really disown him?" "David told me that Dan said he could give up this gay thing and go home with them or he had to get out, that if that was the case he had no son." "The poor kid" Emily said more to herself than to Ike, but he heard it and that gave him at least some encouragement. They got up and went down the hall to David's room. Ike knocked on the door "David? Can we come in?" They heard a quiet "yeah" David was lying on his bed. Both Ike and Em came in and sat on either side of him. Ike gently touched his hand, and then withdrew it as he glanced at Emily. The three talked late into the night about what was going to happen next. Emily was not going to divorce Ike but as to leaving him she didn't know. David could see that she really did love her husband and that he loved her. But he also knew that he and Ike were very much in love as well. It was to say the least a curious dilemma. Emily knew that Ike and David had a bond that she didn't understand but that couldn't be ignored. She also knew that in spite of that they had to see to David's welfare. His parents had cast him off but she was not about to do that. Her mind went back to her university days again. What if the psychology books were right? What if homosexuality was just something that a person was just like heterosexuality. She knew Ike well enough that this was not something that he would have "chosen" to do. David's strict fundamentalist Christian upbringing would not be conducive to him just deciding one day to be gay. If anything he should trying not to be gay. She had noticed an attraction between the two of them from the first time they met. At the time she thought it was good, because David was the only one in the family that just accepted Ike without question. They always got along so well. Now she knew at least in part why that was, although she was pretty sure that at first it was not a sexual attraction but certainly both Ike and David were drawn to each other in ways that she hadn't noticed with any of the other relatives. Ike was good with kids, all of them but with David there had always been this special bond. Looking back she couldn't see anything untoward about it, it just seemed to be, they both just seemed to "click" from the very beginning. Maybe the books were right. Maybe this was just a natural attraction that had unfolded naturally into what it was today. She would certainly have to rethink her Bible thinking on the subject. Revisit the Bible passages that had always been used to prove that homosexuality was a sin, not just a sin but an abomination. She needed to study the psychology again as well. What ever the case she was in a real dilemma, Ike and David obviously had a thing for each other. Sin or not she knew that as long as they were in the same vicinity of each other they would at some point in time get together. She also figured that if she tried to keep them apart she would lose Ike altogether. Whatever he might be she did love him and she was pretty sure that he loved her at least at some level. She needed him, she loved him so much. The logic might not be sound but she heard herself say, "Ike I love you so much it hurts." The tears started again "but I can see you and David love each other too, I don't want to loose you Ike" She felt Ike pull her to himself, his warm arms enveloping her, as he kissed her gently. Then she felt another set of arms around here as David joined them. "I just don't know what to do so you and David . you and David can have each other. After a while Ike said "Em you know I love you, I could never love a woman as I love you. You are the dearest on earth to me. I never want to lose you. I don't know if you can love two people at the same time but I love David too, like my own soul. Let us try to work this out my love, I will never neglect you or leave you. This can work out my dearest" he kissed her, as David backed off letting them be alone. After a moment Emily "I have to get out of here. go home or somewhere for a few days Ike. He knew she was crying as he stood back helplessly She struggled the suitcase in to the backseat of the car and without looking at David or Ike who were standing on the front steps watching her she backed out of the driveway and was gone. They went back into the house and into the kitchen where they sat down unspeaking for some time. Both men were deep in their own thoughts. "Ike?" What Em said is right I have stolen you from her.
