THE ESCAPE OF THE SEA EAGLE
by Ted Macklen

Preface

The sun had not yet come up over the mountain as the nine year old came
racing down the hill on a "borrowed" bicycle. He ignored the stop sign at
White Street, turned right for one block and then turned left and continued
speeding down the hill. He nearly got himself killed as he went through a
red light. The car that just missed him honked its horn as both car and
bike sped on their separate ways. Finally reaching the highway at the
bottom of the hill he paused and waited for the light to turn green. Then
he raced across into the marina parking lot. He sped through that, ignored
the "no vehicles beyond this point" sign and chose the darkest looking
pier. He pedaled out to the end and looked around. Picking out the biggest
boat, which was a large yacht, he sighed and stepped off the bike. Looking
around to make sure he was alone he went over the inspect the vessel as the
first rays of the sun appeared on the horizon. It looked deserted so he
went back to the bicycle, picked it up and threw it over the end of the
pier. Then he crossed back to the yacht, sneaked up the plank and onto the
boat. It's name- The Sea Eagle- was painted on the side. Going inside he
heard a noise on board. He ducked down some steps and found himself below
deck. He peered into an open room. In the gloom he saw an open suit case on
a bunk. As he went down the hallway he passed several other rooms that
appeared occupied. Finally he came to a closed door strait in front of
him. Slowly he opened it. It was a dark closet. Seeing a flashlight by the
door he flicked it on. The closet was empty except for an old sail cloth on
the floor. He went into the closet, closed the door behind him, laid down
and pulled the tarp over him. He flicked off the light and in a few minutes
the gentle rocking of the craft lulled him to sleep.

Chapter One

A few minutes later a Silver Rolls Royce came speeding through the marina
parking lot, again ignoring the same sign it sped right out onto the pier
and came to a sudden halt by the yacht. A tall man opened the door and
climbed out. He closed the door, made sure it was locked and then calmly
tossed the car keys into the water. He walked up the plank calling out
"John, Bill, where are you- let's cast off. Time to go!"

A man appeared on deck and said, "Sorry Fred, we were just finishing up."

Fred walked down the hall way, opened a door and entered the dining area
where he was warmly greeted by a woman wearing an apron.

"Good morning Fred." she said. "Want some coffee?"

"That would be great," he replied as the Captain Stepped into the room. "
Ah, Captain Warren, It seems we're off just in time. It seems that there
are some folks hot on our heals."

" Glad you made it, Fred. We'll be out of reach in a moment. We're leaving
the harbor as we speak- then no one will catch us."

Just a few minutes later three more cars came rushing out on the pier,
screeching to a halt just behind the Rolls Royce Soon men in black suits
were leaping out of the cars, watching the yacht as it sped out into the
ocean. Soon they were looking on in frustration at the rapidly departing
vessel. One was on his cell phone calling the Coast Guard, asking it to
intercept the yacht.

Back on board Fred got up from the table and said "I'm going to have a look
around"

First he checked the top deck, where he bunked. Then he checked the main
deck. Finally he went below and checked each room. Finally he came by the
closet at the bow. He opened the door and noticed the flash light was
missing. He was about to close the door when he noticed a foot peaking out
from under the tarp. He went in pulled the tarp and there- Lo and behold
was a small boy! The movement woke the the boy who cringed and put his hand
in front of his face pleading, Please don't hit me!"

Fred knelt down and said gently, " I won't hurt you, I promise, but who are
you and what are you doing on my boat?"

" My name is Ronny and I'm running away. Please don't make me go back."

" Well, Ronnie, my name is Fred and I can't take you back because we are
going a long way. Let's go up to the dining room and get some breakfast and
you can tell us all about yourself. Your parents must be very worried."

"I don't have any parents. I'm an orphan and my guardians are mean."

" come on, let's go eat."

Fred took the boys hand and led him to the stairs. On the main deck he
picked the boy up and took him to the dining room. Entering it he said,
"Look what I found! I thought you guys were watching the boat. You couldn't
have been very vigilant." He placed Ronny in a chair and said, "we're
hungry."

Needless to say Mary and the two crewmen were shocked. So were the Captain
and the radio man when they came in. As for Ronny, he was scared out of his
whits. He calmed down, however when Mar placed a full breakfast in front of
him. Soon he was eating away and telling his story between mouthfuls. His
life at the care home was not pretty. Finally he ended telling about how he
snuck out, took mean Kenny's bike and fled.

"Well, what are we going to do with him?" asked Mary.

" It looks like we have a new passenger," said Fred.

"But where will we stow him?" Asked Bill.

"There's an extra bunk in my cabin," said Fred. He can bunk with me. Is
that all right with you Ronny?"

""I guess so." Ronnie replied.

"Good, then as soon as we finish here, I'll show you our quarters. I think
you'll like them." then turning to the Captain he asked, "Well Cap, how are
things going."

"Well, we're up to full speed and I don't think any one can catch us. We've
heard the Coast Guard on the radio and they're already searching for
us. It's about time for us to change colors and direction."

"Good, we'll want to see that. Let's go up top and watch. Come on Ronny."
With that he grabbed Ronny by the hand and led him up top to his
cabin. Ronny thought it was huge. There was a desk with a large flat screen
that doubled as a TV and computer screen. There were several nice chairs
and at one end there was a huge bed. Off to one side there was another
small bunk bed. at the other end there were two large curtains and when
Fred pulled them back he disclosed two large glass sliding doors which
opened to a private deck with a swimming pool"

"Whoa! this is so neat!" exclaimed the boy.

"Let's go out and watch what happens," said Fred.

The two of them stepped outside and watched as suddenly it seemed as if the
boat's skin was coming off. Whereas the boat had been white with red trim,
now it was blue with white trim. You could see the old "skin" which was
weighted down dropping into the ocean. Even the shape of the roof seemed
different and the name had been changed to "The Blue Mist."

Fred looking at the pool turned to Ronny and said, "Do you Know how to
swim?"

"Yeah, but I don't have a swim suit."

"Who needs one. We're all men here. If swimming naked bothers you you can
go in your under pants."

"What about you?" Ronny asked.

"I'll do what you do- OK?" Fred replied. A moment later they were both in
the pool.

" Hey, the water is warm." said Ronnie.

"Sure, it's a heated pool." said Fred.

So- Where is Fred headed and what is he running from? More next time as
things heat up between Fred and Ronnie in "the Escape Of The Sea Eagle."

He an another man came out, untied the lines.
