Forever in the Night
Part One
It had been a long, horrible day like so many days before. Brian had
reached his breaking point. He was tired, hungry and afraid to go home. He
had been sitting at a picnic table in the park since school ended and it
was getting dark. He just couldn't get himself to leave. Tears ran down his
face. He realized he wanted to die.
"Why would you want to do that?" said a voice right in front of him.
Brian was startled and looked up and saw a stranger. He hadn't even heard
this guy walk up and it almost scared the crap out of him.
"Don't be scared" the man said "I saw you crying and thought maybe you
needed help".
Brian couldn't see shit now and wondered how long the stranger had been
watching him. "I'm okay" Brian mumbled, hoping the man would just leave.
The park lights were beginning to come on and Brian could see the
stranger's face. He was smiling at him and had the bluest eyes he had ever
seen. He couldn't look away from the stranger.
The man raised an eyebrow and said "Really? Most okay boys aren't sitting
alone in the dark, crying. Do you mind if I ask your name?"
Brian knew he should just leave but he just no longer cared. "Brian" he
said softly.
The man replied, "My name is Alexander and I'm very glad to meet you Brian"
Alexander smiled at Brian again studying him. The boy was obviously
poor. He wore cheap, worn clothes that didn't fit and was probably under
fed. Brian's hair was a sandy blond, poorly cut mop. However, his face was
beautiful despite the dark circles underneath his big green eyes. The boy's
skin looked soft and smooth. Alexander reached out and wiped one of the
tears off of Brian's cheek. Yes, Alexander thought, beautiful.
Brian didn't withdraw from Alexander's touch even though his hand was
cold. He couldn't remember when someone had touched him so gently. Brian
knew it was probably stupid to be sitting alone in a deserted park with a
strange man. The man might want to molest him or shit, even kill him. Brian
was past the point of caring.
Alexander withdrew his hand and asked if he could sit next to
Brian. Brian just shrugged and nodded.
"So why don't you tell me what has you so down tonight" Alexander asked
gently.
Brian didn't know where to start. So many things in his life seemed
overwhelming. He had only just turned thirteen and his life was a big pile
of shit. Brian sighed.
Alexander told him "Just start at the beginning."
So that's what Brian did. He started three years ago when his dad died in a
car accident. Brian knew his dad had loved him. They did everything
together. They weren't rich but they had a house in an okay
neighborhood. Brian had friends at school and played baseball and
basketball. Then his dad died and everything changed. His mother, who
wasn't exactly sober before, became a hopeless drunk. They lost the house
and ended up in a rundown trailer, in the crappiest trailer park, in the
worst part of town. Brian had to change schools and was so withdrawn that
he never made new friends and was constantly picked on about his clothes
and where he lived. His grades sucked and he just didn't care enough to
make them better. Then when he thought that it couldn't get any worse, his
mother married Leon.
Whereas his mother pretty much ignored him, Leon was a mean ass drunk. Leon
worked the crappiest, low paying jobs and he couldn't even hold onto those
for more than a few weeks. Everything was always someone else's fault. Leon
was angry at the world for his shitty life. Since he couldn't take it out
on anyone else, Brian became his favorite target. It started as name
calling. He never called Brian by name, usually it was retard, dumb ass, or
a slew of other profanities. Then it became physical. All Brian would have
to do is be in the room and he would get slapped in the back of the
head. Lately, it was even worse. Leon started punching Brian in the ribs
and back. He always had bruises. Brian's only hope was to wait as long as
possible before going home. If he was lucky, Leon and his mother would
already be passed out when he came in.
It wasn't one thing that made Brian's life miserable, it was the way
everything compounded daily. Brian finished his story and Alexander sat
quietly.
Finally Alexander said, "So many problems for such a young boy. Remember
this is only one part of a very long life. It will get better one day."
"Uh, yeah sure." Brian said. He thought 'easy for him to say'. Still, it
felt better to talk about it, even to some screwball in the park. There was
something about Alexander, his eyes and the calmness of his voice. "Anyway,
I've got to go home."
Alexander smiled at him and said "If you ever want to talk again, I come
here at the same time almost every night". Alexander watched him walk
away. He felt bad for the boy and wished he could help him.
Brian waited a couple of days but eventually went back to the park. Sure
enough, at the same time, Alexander showed up. Brian was surprised. There
were very few adults that kept their word in his life and yet a complete
stranger, that he met only once, was doing exactly that.
Alexander wasn't surprised to see Brian. He had sensed the boy's loneliness
and desperation. It was good to talk to a boy, even if he was such a sad
one.
"Hello Brian."
"Hi" Brian said shyly
"You look better today. How are you doing?" Alexander said. Brian did look
better but Alexander could still see the sorrow and fatigue in the boy's
beautiful face.
"I'm alright, I guess." He looked at Alexander. Alexander was tall and lean
and his face was pale in contrast to his deep blue eyes and dark brown
hair. He looked like an actor or some kind of musician. Alexander looked
very out of place in this neighborhood.
"So did you come to talk or am I bothering you?" Alexander asked smiling.
"I don't mind. What do you want to talk about?" Brian said
"Why don't you tell me about your day."
Brian didn't know what to say. There were times when Brian wouldn't talk to
anyone for a whole day and if he did, he was never the topic of discussion.
"Like what?" Brian replied
Alexander smiled "Everything, even the smallest detail. I'm not going
anywhere, any time soon. Are you?"
Brian wasn't very eager to leave. So he told Alexander about his day. Just
like before, Alexander listened patiently. If Brian paused or stopped,
Alexander would ask him questions drawing out even more details.
This was the true beginning of their friendship. Brian started coming to
the park everyday. He would do most of the talking but sometimes Alexander
would tell him about all the places where he had traveled. Much to
Alexander's pleasure, the boy began to smile and laugh.
After the first week, Alexander invited to him to a nearby diner for
dinner. Brian was reluctant at first. He didn't want to take advantage of
his new friend but Alexander insisted. It wasn't the greatest place but to
Brian it was the best food he had ever eaten. Alexander rarely even ordered
anything for himself and if he did, he let Brian take it home with him.
One day Brian came with a large bruise on the side of his face. When
Alexander noticed this, the friendly smile that he normally greeted Brian
with disappeared. He reached out and gently turned Brian's face so he could
see the injury better.
"Did Leon do this?" Alexander asked scowling.
"No, not this time. It was this asshole from school." Brian responded. He
had stopped telling Alexander about Leon because Alexander, who was
normally very calm, had started to get very pissed off when Leon's name
came up.
"What happened?"
"Same shit that always happens. This kid named Dean came up to me calling
me names. I tried to just walk away but he pushed me into the lockers and I
hit my face." Brian said.
Alexander looked at Brian. He had made so much progress but he needed to
stand up for himself.
"Do you know why you always get picked on?" Alexander asked Brian.
"Why?" Brian asked back.
"You look like a victim. The way you stand, the way you walk." Alexander
said firmly.
Brian looked at him puzzled. This was the first time Alexander had talked
to him this way. He could hear the strength in his voice. Brian knew he was
right. He looked down at the ground.
"I know" Brian replied softly looking down at his feet.
"I don't want to upset you Brian. I care for you more than you know and it
hurts me to see you like this. You need to understand that as long as you
are going to get your ass kicked, you might as well do it fighting."
"Alexander, I can't. I just don't know how."
"Start by standing up straight, with your head up." Alexander ordered.
Brian did as he was told. His eyes met Alexander's and he could see the
seriousness in his face.
Alexander looked him over and said, "Better. Now walk for me. Step like you
have a purpose, not that timid little shuffle you usually get around with."
Brian walked a few steps from Alexander and then walked back. He could feel
a difference but wasn't real confident about it yet. "Alexander, I know
you're trying to help me but my clothes, the way I look, everyone thinks
I'm a loser."
Alexander sighed. "Brian, its not how you dress, its what's in here." He
tapped Brian on the chest. "And what's in here." He tapped him on the
forehead. "This is the Brian I know and like. I don't care about how you
dress and, if you don't already know, I'll tell you. You're a very good
looking boy."
That made Brian smile. "I guess so. I'm just not much of a fighter."
Alexander knelt down so his face was almost even with Brian's. He put both
hands on Brian's shoulders. "We can fix that. Relax and shut your eyes. I
want you to picture what you're going to do the next time Dean picks on
you."
At first, Brian didn't see anything but then it happened. It was like a
movie playing in his head. It was strange and he could feel his confidence
growing. When it was over, he opened his eyes. Alexander was there with his
usual smile.
"I think you're ready." Alexander said, "Don't take anymore shit."
Brian nodded. He hadn't felt like this in a long time. He was almost
looking forward to going back to school and meeting Dean.
Alexander returned the nod, "Alright then, let's go get you something to
eat."
The next day at school, Brian didn't have to wait long. He was walking
through the halls and saw Dean heading straight for him, surrounded by his
group of flunkies. Instead of slinking by or turning around like he'd
normally do, he just kept walking like Alexander had told him.
Dean didn't noticed Brian's renewed confidence. Instead he saw the same
easy mark as always. "Hey K-mart, you want another beating?"
Brian walked up to Dean. Dean out weighed Brian easily by forty ponds and
was six inches taller. He had a big round freckled face and reddish orange
hair. Brian looked him in the eyes and said "Listen you fat, red-headed
asshole, why don't you go fuck yourself!"
Dean was shocked. He never expected this and completely froze. That was the
opening Brian needed. He drove his foot hard into Dean's nuts and Dean let
out a loud moan as he doubled over in pain. Brian then brought his knee up
into Dean's face and he collapsed, sobbing on the ground, holding his
balls. Brian looked at Dean's friends and they stared back in
disbelief. None of them challenged Brian after the way he dismantled their
leader. Brian walked away with his head up and a big grin across his face.
That night, he ran up to Alexander and gave him a huge hug. Alexander put
his arms around Brian and savored the embrace. Brian looked up at Alexander
with the biggest smile Alexander had ever seen on the boy.
Brian exclaimed, "I kicked his ass! It happened just like I pictured it! I
never could have done it without you!"
Alexander returned Brian's smile still holding him in his arms. "I didn't
do anything Brian, it was all you."
Brian told Alexander everything that happened. He was so excited they
didn't even go to the diner that night. They just stayed in the park and
sat at the picnic table where they first met. Alexander kept his arm around
the boy the whole time.
When Brian left, Alexander watched him walk away. The beauty he had first
seen in the boy was really beginning to flourish. The extra meals had
helped fill out his face and his body. He couldn't help but notice how nice
Brian's legs were. Alexander smiled to himself. He was in love with the
boy. How long had it been since he had been in love?
Brian got home a little earlier than normal. He walked into the trailer and
saw his mother passed out on the couch. He assumed Leon was sleeping one
off somewhere else.
Leon wasn't asleep and he noticed Brian coming into the trailer. He had
also noticed Brian's new "cocky" attitude and he didn't like it one bit.
"Hey dumb fuck, where've you been?" Leon slurred
Brian's heart sank when he heard Leon's drunken voice. This had almost been
the perfect day. He turned to face his most hated enemy. He knew he
couldn't beat Leon, the man weighed almost three hundred pounds, but he was
fed up with just taking the abuse.
Brian took a deep breath and said, "Nowhere. I'm tired of your crap. Why
don't you just go pass out somewhere."
Unlike Dean, Leon was too drunk to be shocked. He just got really
pissed. He looked at the cocky little brat in front of him. How dare that
fucking little runt talk back to him.
Although Leon was fat and drunk, he was still surprisingly quick. Brian
never even saw the backhand coming. It struck his face with such ferocity
that it sent him sprawling across the room. He landed on his back, dazed,
with his face screaming in protest from the pain. Leon was on him in a
flash, straddling Brian's chest with his knees.
"What's wrong tough boy?" Leon spit into Brian's face, "I'm going to beat
your fucking ass so bad, you won't be able walk for a month!"
Brian looked over at his mother. She hadn't even moved with all the
commotion.
Leon saw that and laughed, "You think that fucking sow is going to help
you? She probably doesn't even remember you're alive."
Leon brought his fist back and Brian did his best to brace for the
impact. Then Leon was gone. Brian struggled to sit up. When he finally did,
he couldn't believe what he saw. It looked like Alexander but not quite
Alexander. Alexander's brilliant blue eyes glowed fiery red and the mouth
that had smiled so often at Brian was pulled back in a snarl that revealed
long menacing fangs. Fangs!
Brian couldn't believe his eyes. There was also Leon's hulking body being
held off the floor by one hand. Leon had a look of complete horror as he
tried in vain to free himself from Alexander's grip. The struggle didn't
last long. One effortless swipe of Alexander's free hand and Leon's throat
disappeared in a shower of red.
Alexander let Leon gurgle and grasp at his ruined throat for a moment and
then dropped him on the ground. He turned and walked towards Brian. By the
time he reached Brian, his appearance had returned to normal except for the
splatters of blood and flesh on his face.
Alexander looked down at Brian while pulling a rag out of his pocket to
wipe his face, "Don't be afraid"
"I'm not." Brian was strangely calm and he knew Alexander would never do
that to him.
Alexander smiled at Brian, "You know it's time for me to leave now, there
will be questions about his death."
Brian lowered his head. He could already feel the tears coming, "I know."
"I want you to come with me." Alexander offered.
"Really?" Brian looked up.
"Yes but you know what that means."
"I'd never be able to come back here." Brian said.
Alexander nodded, "That's true but there's something else as well."
Brian took a moment to think about it.
He knew all along that Alexander was different, very different, "I need to
be what you are?"
"I would never force it on you. It has to be your choice."
Brian looked around at the trailer, at his drunken mother who still hadn't
moved, his dead step father and the rest of the useless crap that had been
part of his life. He knew what he wanted to do.
"I want to come with you Alexander."
Alexander reached down and picked Brian up. He held him in his arms and
kissed him gently on the lips.
Brian smiled and said, "I love you so much."
Alexander returned Brian's smile, "I love you too, Brian. Are you ready?"
Brian nodded and turned his head, offering his neck.
"This will only hurt for a second." Alexander assured him.
Brian barely felt the fangs penetrate his neck. He held onto Alexander
tightly and was beginning to feel groggy. He could feel his old life
flowing out of his body and could already feel the new growing deep
within. He knew that he would wake up to a new life, where he would be with
Alexander, forever.
----------------------------------------------------
Part Two
Brian woke up and felt horrible. His head hurt and every muscle ached like
the time he had the stomach flu. It was dark but he could see the room he
was in and he didn't recognize anything. The bed he was laying in was as
big as his whole room in the trailer. He could also see a desk with a
computer and shelves with a big TV. Had he dreamt the whole thing with
Alexander and was he still dreaming? He didn't think so. No one felt this
bad in a dream. He heard footsteps outside the door. The door opened and
Alexander walked in.
Alexander smiled at him, "I thought you might be waking up. How do you
feel."
Brian weakly returned Alexander's smile, "I feel okay"
Alexander chuckled. "You're not a very good liar Brian. I've been where you
are now and I don't think I had ever felt worse. You've been out for over a
week and the first few days, you were puking your guts out. That's why I
took off your clothes."
Brian hadn't even noticed he was just wearing underwear. Alexander sat on
the bed next to him.
Alexander said, "The change takes a lot out of you. You need to feed and
then you'll feel much better." Alexander reached into his pocket and
removed a small knife.
"What are you going to with that?" asked Brian
"I'm going to make a small cut in my neck, so you can feed."
Brian's eyes grew big with surprise. "I'm going drink your blood?"
"Vampire blood is best, you'll see. Besides I owe you." Alexander reached
out and touched the place on Brian's neck where he had bitten him. It was
almost healed.
Brian still looked skeptical, "I don't know Alexander. I don't think I
can."
Alexander assured him, "Brian, trust me. It'll be okay and besides, I don't
even mind."
Alexander made a small incision in his neck and helped guide Brian's mouth
to it. Brian could smell the blood before he tasted it. It was oddly
appealing. He was hesitant but the moment he tasted Alexander's blood, it
sent a charge through his whole body. He drank deeply and could feel his
strength returning and the aches diminishing. He could feel a powerful bond
with Alexander. Before long, Alexander eased his head away. Brian watched
as the cut in Alexander's neck disappeared.
"I think that's enough for now." Alexander said. "Quite a rush, eh?"
Brian's body still tingled from the effects of Alexander's blood. The
groggy haze he woke up with quickly faded. Brian realized not only did he
feel better than he did a few moments ago, his vision and hearing were far
more sensitive than before Alexander had bitten him. His body buzzed with
new feelings and excitement. Brian realized he even had a
boner. Instinctively, he moved his hands to cover himself.
"Don't be embarrassed. It happens to the best of us." Alexander assured
him. "Look, I got you some new clothes, they're on the desk. I only got you
a few things to start because I figured if you're getting all new clothes,
you might as well be able pick them yourself. I guessed at the sizes. The
bathroom is through that door."
Alexander put his arm around Brian and gave him a little hug. "No offense
guy, but you reek."
Brian did notice that he had a serious case of BO. As Alexander was leaving
the room, Brian asked, "Is this your room Alexander?"
Alexander turned and said, "No, it's yours. When we get the rest of your
clothes, you can get some more stuff for your room too."
Brian found the switch and turned the lights on. Although he saw
surprisingly well in the dark, he wanted to see his new room in the
light. In addition to the TV and the computer, there was also a stereo
system with speakers mounted on all four walls. Everything looked new. The
furniture was all coordinated black painted wood and the carpet and walls
were varying shades of grey. He couldn't believe it was really his room. He
stood up and walked over to the desk to look at his new clothes. It was all
skater stuff that the popular kids wore at his old school. He loved
it. There was even a new watch still in the box made by some company called
Nixon. He had never owned a watch before. He headed into the bathroom to
take a shower.
Brian emerged from his new room showered and dressed in his clothes and was
again overwhelmed by his surroundings. Alexander's apartment was huge. The
living room had a giant projection screen television surrounded by brown
leather couches. The dinning area had a long mahogany table and
chairs. Modern, brightly colored paintings hung on the rich burgundy
painted walls. The kitchen was modern and full of stainless steel
appliances. The place looked like something out of the movies.
Alexander was sitting on one of the couches and motioned Brian to come
over.
"You look a lot better and that stuff fits you pretty well." Alexander
observed.
"Thanks Alexander, thank you for everything."
"No thanks necessary. It's been my pleasure." Alexander said, "Sit
down. I'm sure you're curious about things."
Brian nodded and sat down.
"First of all, since are a vampire now, I'm going to give you a little
vampire 101 and tell you what is myth and what is fact. All vampires, at
least all that I've known, were originally humans that were turned by the
bite of another vampire. Something in our saliva mutates human DNA and
causes the change. We're not undead like in the movies but we do live a
very long time.
I've never known a vampire to die of old age.
Vampires can be killed but it's difficult because we regenerate so
rapidly. Even a new one like you, given enough fresh blood, could recover
from almost any wound. If you want to kill a vampire, you need to remove
their head, you can't re-grow a new head or a whole new body. Fire can also
be lethal if it causes enough damage. There's also the sun. Vampire flesh
is highly sensitive to the sunlight. You don't burst into flames like in
the movies but your skin blisters and falls apart after only a few minutes
of sunlight. Questions so far?"
Brian shook his head. It was all overwhelming but he thought it was really
cool.
Alexander continued, "Most of the vampire myths were started over 1500
years ago. There were a lot more of us then and humans were mostly
ignorant, simple people that feared the night. We were the reason for that
fear and they clung to their superstitions and religious beliefs for
hope. Crosses and holy water have no effect on us, just bed time stories
told to comfort scared children, same with garlic and silver.
The old wooden stake through the heart bit was actually based on some
fact. It was common that if a vampire was captured alive, he was sometimes
taken out just before dawn and staked to the ground. A long wooden or metal
stake was usually driven through his chest, hands and legs. This didn't
kill the vampire but the rising sun did. The other myth based on some fact
is vampires sleep in coffins. If you notice, there are no coffins in my
apartment. Before modern travel, traveling by land or sea took days, weeks
or months. It was common for our kind to use coffin-like boxes, that locked
from the inside, to protect us from the sun."
"You said there were more vampires long ago, did people kill them?" Brian
asked.
"The truth is Brian most vampires back then were killed by other vampires."
Brian was surprised, "Really? Why would you kill each other?"
"Why do humans kill one another? Pride, greed, revenge, vampires were all
humans once and we have human emotions. There was a time when there were
too many of us. Normally, a vampire carefully chooses a human to turn and
stays with them to teach them how to be a proper vampire. Humans we kill
for food are usually beheaded after being bitten and not allowed to
turn. These new vampires weren't following this rule and more and more
"accidental vampires" were being created. Many just died on their own
unaware of our reaction to the sun but still many survived. They spread
like a virus completely wiping out local populations of humans. So older
vampires gathered together and formed hunting parties and killed many of
the younger vampires. Even after the balance was restored, some of the
hunters continued to hunt other vampires, even members of the original
hunting pack."
"Were you one of the hunters Alexander?"
"Yes, I was one of the younger members that hunted because I believed it
was necessary. After the original hunt was over, I only killed other
vampires in self defense."
"But why did the others keep hunting vampires." Brian asked
"How did my blood make you feel?" Alexander said "There were many that
believed that when you killed another vampire, you took his strength. I
think that's another myth but vampire blood is powerful and most vampires
aren't eager to share with one another."
"You shared yours with me."
"I don't have a problem with it." Alexander smiled at Brian, "Besides, I
already told you that I owed you one. Any other questions?"
Brian thought for a moment, "Only one, I guess. When do I get my....uh..."
Alexander finished the sentence for him, "Your fangs? When you need
them. Just kidding, kind of. Although you're already a vampire, you're
still developing. Sometimes it takes months or years and usually they come
out when you are excited or threatened. A new vampire has little control
over his fangs. If that's it, I'll show you around the apartment."
They both stood up and Alexander led Brian to the kitchen.
"If you notice, the refrigerator has three doors and one of them has a
combination lock." Alexander explained. He opened the locked door and it
contained several shelves with bags of what appeared to be blood. "The
combination is 467. You need to drink at least one bag a day for a couple
of weeks."
Brian scrunched up his face at the thought, "I don't know if I can drink
blood." Alexander chuckled, "You're going to be surprised at how easy it
will be plus it will help you feel better and make you stronger. The other
doors have normal food for you if you still feel like eating. The longer
you're a vampire, the more your human habits, like eating and sleeping,
will disappear. "
"You don't sleep?"
"I haven't slept for a long, long time." Alexander motioned Brian to follow
him, "My room is through that door. There are two other bedrooms that I
keep empty. I want to show you one last thing."
Alexander walked over to the coffee table and picked up a remote. He
pressed a button and rolling shutters that covered the windows started to
open. The view was fantastic. They were thirty-two stories above the city.
"The shutters are programmed so they can't be accidentally opened during
the day. That's the quick tour. It's only eight o'clock and the mall down
the street is open until ten. Do you want to go shopping or are you not up
to it?"
Brian only had to think for a moment. "Let's go!"
Shopping with Alexander was an experience for Brian. The past couple of
years, his mom would just bring him home clothes from the thrift store. He
wasn't used to picking things out for himself especially really nice
things. Brian was tentative at first but Alexander helped him out. By the
time they were done, Brian had enough clothes for 2 weeks, a bunch of new
music cds and an X-box with 10 games. When Brian was trying on clothes, one
of the sales ladies commented on how handsome, Alexander's son was. They
smiled at each other and Alexander thanked her.
Alexander gave Brian a week to get settled in and then laid down a few
rules. Alexander had set up Brian's computer with educational software for
math, language, history and science. He had to work on those five hours a
day, five days a week. Brian also had to keep up on current events and
Alexander planned on quizzing him a couple times a week. In addition to the
computer, he was required to read a novel every two weeks from a small
library. Alexander also had Brian pick one foreign language that Alexander
would personally teach him. Brian chose Spanish. Brian wasn't expecting
this but Alexander explained that ignorant vampires ended up living in
trailers just like ignorant humans.
One night, after Brian had finished his studies, Alexander came into
Brian's room. "Get ready, we're going running." Alexander ordered.
Brian looked at Alexander like he was crazy, "I don't want to go jogging,
it's boring."
Alexander wrinkled his nose at Brian, "Old men jog, we're going running and
trust me, you're going to have fun. Besides you haven't left the apartment
for a couple of weeks. C'mon lazy butt, let's go."
Alexander set the pace starting from their building, it was fast but
nothing remarkable. Brian couldn't help wondering to himself 'how was this
fun?' When they were in a deserted part of downtown, Alexander stopped.
"Okay, you ready to go now?" Alexander asked.
"What do you mean? We've been running for fifteen minutes." Brian replied.
"You call that running? Just follow me and keep close." Alexander said.
Alexander took off and Brian followed. Brian struggled at first but
eventually kept up. He couldn't believe how fast they were going. Alexander
ran directly at a parked car and simply leaped over it. Brian tried and did
pretty well but ended up on the car's roof. Alexander waited for Brian as
he jumped off the car.
"That's not running, that was more like flying! It was frick'n awesome!"
Brian exclaimed.
Alexander laughed, "I thought you'd like it. Are you ready for more?"
Brian nodded his head yes and they headed into the night. This became
Brian's favorite game with Alexander, vampire follow the leader. They ran
through the city's industrial areas, over fences, walls, buildings and
whatever other obstacles Alexander could find. In the beginning, it was
almost impossible for Brian to keep up. Brian would have to climb over
things that Alexander could easily jump over and Alexander would have to
wait for him. After a couple of months, he was able to stay with Alexander
most of the time.
One night when Alexander didn't shake him at all, Brian was feeling really
confident.
"Damn, Alexander, am I getting that much better or do you just suck
tonight?" Brian teased.
Alexander raised one eyebrow, "Feeling a little cocky, eh?"
"Sometimes, you're just this good." Brian gave it back to him.
"Alright smartass, let's see."
Alexander sprinted away and Brian followed but not for long. Alexander had
hit a gear that Brian had never seen before. Brian had lost him
completely. Usually, even if he couldn't see him, Brian's acute vampire
hearing could pick up his footfalls. Brian stopped running. Then someone
grabbed him from behind. It was Alexander. He hadn't even heard him come
up. Brian leaned back against his friend and Alexander hugged him close.
"You have gotten a lot better but you still have a long way to go before
you catch up to me, my little vampire." Alexander whispered in Brian's ear.
"Yeah, well, you still suck." Brian joked.
"You're right, I do", Alexander said as he pretended to bite Brian's
neck. Brian laughed. "Let's try again, this time, you lead."
Brian twisted out of Alexander's arms and sped off into the night.
Brian settled into his new life. He loved being with Alexander and even
enjoyed his home schooling. He also had made a friend that lived in the
building. One time when he was at the building's pool, he met a twelve year
old Korean boy, named Jin. They talked a lot and met several more times at
the pool before the boy invited Brian to come over one night.
Jin's parents weren't real thrilled about their son's friendship with an
American boy. Alexander fixed that when he introduced himself and spoke
with them in fluent Korean. He told them that he had spent some time
traveling in Korea when he was younger. He just didn't tell them it was in
the nineteenth century.
It was because of Jin that Brian nearly made his first and maybe last big
mistake as a vampire when Jin had called him to come over.
"Alexander, I'm going over to Jin's, okay?" Brian asked.
"No problem." Alexander replied. Brian headed toward the door. "Hey
Brian. What time is it?" Alexander asked.
Brian stopped and looked at his watch, "It's almost four." Brian started to
leave again. "Brian. Hold on." Alexander said.
Brian was getting a little annoyed. "Yeah?"
"What kind of window coverings do they have in Jin's apartment?"
Brian thought for a moment, they didn't cover their windows at
all. "Shit. I'll see if he wants to come down here."
"Good idea." Alexander said shaking his head.
One of the reasons Alexander had moved into the building was because of its
proximity to the city's cultural center. Alexander and Brian went to the
movies and sporting events but he also started taking Brian to plays, the
symphony, and art shows. All of this was within walking distance. One
night, after walking back from a production of "Mac Beth", Alexander and
Brian ran into two men.
Seth Morris and Kyle Jones were your typical two-bit criminals. Both had
served prison time for armed robbery and auto theft and had recently taken
up mugging. They saw a man and a boy walking towards them on a deserted
street. The man was dressed nicely and looked like money. People with kids
were easy targets because they would do anything so the kids wouldn't get
hurt. Seth looked over at Kyle and nodded. When Brian and Alexander were
close enough, they each pulled out a handgun and pointed them at Alexander.
"Stop right there mother fucker." Seth ordered.
Alexander held up his hands, "Take it easy. We don't want any trouble."
"Just hand over your wallet and watch." Kyle demanded.
"Look, why don't you guys just leave and no one gets hurt" Alexander said
calmly.
Seth was the hot headed one and was impatient with this guy's bullshit. He
swung his gun around and hit Alexander on the side of the head. Alexander
went down. Seth was pleased with himself. The guy was big but he went down
like a fucking pussy. He didn't have long to enjoy his victory because the
kid jumped on him.
The initial force of the boy hitting him nearly knocked him over but he
stayed upright. The kid had a good grip on him. He tried peeling him off
but he couldn't. He could feel the kid's nails digging into his back. He
was getting pissed. He didn't panic until he felt Brian's new fangs start
tearing through the side of his neck. Seth didn't panic long. Brian had
sliced open his carotid artery. Seth collapsed as Brian fed on his first
kill as a vampire.
When Kyle saw Brian jump on Seth, he thought it was hilarious. Especially
when Seth couldn't get the kid off himself. When Seth went down and Kyle
saw the blood, he knew things were fucked up. He raised his gun and looked
for a clean shot.
Alexander had let Seth hit him and had gone to the ground as a distraction
before he made his move. He hadn't planned on killing these idiots in front
of Brian. He saw Brian leap on the one that hit him and realized that Brian
was acting on instinct. He stood up just in time to see Kyle aiming his gun
at Brian. He quickly knocked the gun out of Kyle's hand with one hand and
reached around with the other and grabbed Kyle's chin. He pulled back quick
and hard and Kyle's neck snapped with an audible crack.
Alexander watched as Brian finished feeding. There still wasn't anyone
around. If someone came by now, he would have to kill them. Brian finished,
stood up and looked at Alexander. His eyes glowed red and there was blood
all over his face and down the front of his shirt. Alexander motioned him
to come over.
"Lets take a look at those. Open up." Alexander requested calmly. Brian
opened his mouth so Alexander could see his fangs. He touched the tips with
his fingers. "Very nice. It's time to put them away. Do you hear me, relax
and calm down. Are you okay?"
After a moment, Brian's fangs slid back up into his pallet and his eyes
returned to normal. The whole thing was like a dream to him. He was aware
of what he was doing but it was like he was on auto-pilot.
Brian said, still energized with his first kill, "I'm alright."
Alexander patted his head, "You are always full of surprises. Do you know
why vampires always wear black."
Brian shook his head.
Alexander pointed to Brian's blood stained white shirt, "It's harder to see
the blood, especially at night. Let's take that off."
Alexander helped Brian take the shirt off and used the clean part to wipe
some of the blood off Brian's face. "So let's see if you remember any of
your vampire 101. What do you need to do if you bite someone?"
"Cut off their head." Brian stated.
"Always be prepared", Alexander said as he reached inside of his leather
jacket and pulled out a surprisingly long, curved knife.
He walked over to where Seth was laying and lifted his head off the
ground. He sliced Seth's head off with one stroke. He looked around the
street and saw a dumpster. He picked up Seth's body and head and brought
them over to the dumpster. He opened it up and looked inside. It contained
a bunch of broken computer equipment parts and some scrap paper. It wasn't
the ideal place to dump the bodies but it would have to do.
He was standing in the street with a half naked boy covered in blood and
two corpses. It would be hard to explain. He dumped Seth's body and head in
and went back to get Kyle. After he had dumped Kyle's body, he did his best
to cover them up. They probably wouldn't be discovered and if they were, no
one would be able to trace it back to he and Brian. He had Brian wear his
jacket back to the apartment. Luckily, they made it back without incident.
When they got back to the apartment, Brian gave Alexander his jacket back
and told him he was going to take shower. Brian went to his room but was
still too wound up. Not only was he excited about making his first kill but
there was something else bothering him. He had always thought, even when he
was human, that Alexander wanted him. He knew there were men that liked
having sex with boys and Brian wasn't stupid.
There was something about the way Alexander looked at him. After he and
Alexander had become close, he would have let Alexander have him not just
because he felt he owed Alexander but also because Brian was curious about
sex with men.
It was the same way right after he became a vampire. That had changed over
the months they had been together. He had begun to be disappointed that
Alexander hadn't tried anything. Brian had even started thinking about
Alexander when he was jerking off. There would be times when he played
video games in the living room for hours, laying against Alexander, wrapped
in his arms but that and the occasional peck on the cheek was about as far
is it went. Brian's curiosity changed into desire and after tonight's kill,
it was pure lust. It was time he took matters into his own hands.
Alexander was working on the computer in his room when Brian walked in. He
still hadn't taken his shower. He looked like a demon child shirtless, with
his hair messed up and splatters of blood on his face. Alexander thought to
himself how sexy it made him look in a way that only a vampire could
appreciate. Brian walked over to Alexander and put his arms around his
neck. He kissed Alexander on the mouth. Not a peck but a real kiss. This
was the first time Brian had done this but it was so natural. Alexander
could taste Brian and the blood from his kill, the combination was
electric.
They kissed for a long time and when they were done, Brian said, "I want
you."
Alexander picked Brian up and carried him to the bed he never slept
in. Starting at Brian's lips, Alexander lightly ran his fingers slowly down
Brian's body. The lightness of the touch was driving Brian crazy. He was so
turned on that he thought he was going to cum in his pants. Alexander knew
what he doing and he was also enjoying the feel of Brian's smooth skin and
firm muscles.
When he reached Brian's pants, he slowly unbuttoned and unzipped
them. Then, using both hands, he pulled them off as Brian raised his hips
slightly to make it easier. As Alexander undressed, he took the time to
take in the sight of Brian's naked body. He thought it was perfect. Smooth
and hairless with just the right amount of muscular development.
Brian was equally impressed with Alexander's body. Although he looked
slender dressed, Alexander's pale body was remarkably well defined. Brian's
eyes glowed red with excitement and anticipation. Alexander lowered himself
onto Brian and they kissed passionately again. Brian's erect penis rubbed
against Alexander's stomach.
As they kissed each other, Alexander spread Brian's legs apart before
Alexander started to kiss and nibble along Brian's neck. Alexander was
normally very cool and composed but he had to fight the urge to sink his
fangs into Brian's neck. Instead, he gave Brian's nipples some play bites,
then kissed and nibbled his way down Brian's smooth firm belly.
Brian had handfuls of Alexander hair. He knew that Alexander was going to
suck his cock and he knew that Alexander was prolonging it as much as
possible. When Alexander finally did swallow his throbbing member, Brian
thrust his hips upward. Alexander expertly brought Brian to the edge of
climax but before Brian could cum, Alexander would begin to lick his nuts
or the insides of his legs before returning to his almost impossibly hard
dick.
"You're teasing me!!" Brian screamed with tormented delight still gripping
Alexander's hair.
Alexander pretended to ignore him, he had again brought Brian to the edge
of cumming but this time, he pushed Brian's legs back and began teasing
Brian's butt hole with his tongue before he pushed it deep inside the
opening. Brian let out a long moan of pleasure. Alexander continued to lick
and probe Brian's anus with his tongue and then his fingers. When Brian
would reach down to finish himself off, Alexander pushed his hands
away. Finally Alexander stopped and kneeled between his Alexander's legs.
"You're about to find out why this is so much better as a vampire boy
instead of a human one." Alexander almost said in a hiss as he spoke
through his fangs.
Brian looked up at Alexander, burning with a desire he never even
imagined. Alexander spit in his hand and rubbed it on his large
erection. Brian knew what was coming next and felt no fear or doubt as
Alexander pressed his cock head against Brian's boy hole. One firm push and
Alexander was inside Brian. There was pain but only briefly, Brian's
vampire body adjusted quickly like it did with everything and pain became a
flaming pleasure.
Alexander thrust deep into Brian, sensing that the boy was feeling pleasure
in a way that only a vampire could. It took only a few slow deep strokes
before he knew the boy was going to cum and there was no turning
back. Alexander leaned down and kissed Brian deeply and then turned his
head.
Brian came for the first time that night as his fangs sank into Alexander's
neck and Alexander burst inside him filling Brian at both ends.
They made love all night long while feeding from one another.
When their passions were finally spent, Alexander laid on his back with
his eyes closed. Brian laid next to him on his side with his head resting
on his hand, watching Alexander. He opened his eyes and saw Brian looking
at him.
"I thought you don't sleep anymore?" Brian asked.
Alexander rolled over to face Brian, "I wasn't sleeping. I was thinking how
much I love you." He reached out and caressed Brian's face.
Brian smiled, "I love you too. I don't know why we waited so long."
Alexander laughed, "You still think like a human. You and I will have so
much time together, the wait was but a moment. Besides, some things are
worth waiting for."
Brian said, "I guess so. I'm really tired. Can I sleep here?"
Alexander replied, "Anytime you want. I'll even lay here with you until you
wake up."
Brian turned over with his back to Alexander and scooted back into him as
close as he could. Alexander reached out and held him even closer. Brian
fell asleep in Alexander's arms. More remarkably, a short time later,
Alexander fell asleep for the first time in centuries.
As Brian and Alexander slept, Marty Polanski was more than halfway through
his garbage route. He came to a dumpster where, a couple of months ago, he
found some used computer equipment that still worked. He sold it at a swap
meet and had gotten two hundred dollars for it. Now he checked the dumpster
every time he made a pick up. This week, he found something that made him
never want to look in a dumpster again and caused him to puke up his
breakfast all over his favorite boots.
He called the police to report the two bodies he found. The police
investigated the homicides but the investigation was put on the back burner
when they identified the victims. The police figured that Seth and Kyle had
finally fucked with the wrong people and paid the price. No loss. Still
police and coroner reports were filed and data based.
In a city fifteen-hundred miles away, a search engine on a computer logged
these reports and created a new report for its user. Borek looked the
report over. The computer had assigned a forty-three percent probability
that the case was vampire related. His instincts, finely honed after
thousands of years, told him the probability was much higher. In fact, he
was sure there was a vampire involved. He called his personal assistant and
told him to have his jet ready for departure tonight. He ran his tongue
over his fangs in anticipation. He was going hunting.
Brian glided down the street on his skateboard. He had only had it for a
week. He and Alexander had seen some kids skating one night and he
mentioned how he had always wanted to try it. A day later, it was delivered
to the apartment. Along with the skateboard, Alexander got him a cell phone
since he would start going out on his own at night. Vampire strength and
agility made learning easy. He could already ollie over three feet high and
was grinding any edge he could find.
The other cool thing about being a vampire was that when he did crash, as
he had several times, he healed fast.
The first night he went out on his own, Alexander acted like a typical
parent.
"Got your cell phone?" Alexander asked.
Brian checked his pocket, "Yes".
"Alright, just be careful." Alexander warned.
"Yes, dad", Brian responded sarcastically "Nuthin's gonna happen to me."
"Who said I was worried about you? Maybe I'm just worried about everyone
you're going run over with that thing." Alexander returned.
"Thanks." Brian said laughing.
It went pretty well and he had gone skating almost every night that
week. Ever since the muggers, he loved the night more than ever. He finally
felt like he was a vampire. There was nothing for him to fear, in fact, he
was something to be feared. That made him smile. He had a new game where he
picked one person and followed them. He pretended that he was hunting and
waited until they were somewhere alone, he imagined making the kill. It was
just a game but sometimes it was tempting.
Borek watched some kid go by on a skateboard. He spent a week checking the
area where the bodies were found and came to the conclusion that it was
probably an accidental meeting rather than a vampire actually hunting the
victims. This was definitely not an area a vampire would choose as a
regular hunting ground. There was either no one here or there were a lot of
people coming to or leaving some event.
That would make his own hunt more difficult but like Alexander, he was very
patient. He knew that eventually, this vampire would make another mistake
and he would have his chance.
Alexander noticed something else that changed about Brian since his first
kill, he was constantly on edge. He had just gotten home from skating and
he was still pacing around the apartment. Alexander watched him try to play
a video game for about thirty minutes but he couldn't sit still and
concentrate. It was like watching a tiger at the zoo pace around its
cage. Alexander knew a predator when he saw one. He also knew what would
calm him down.
"Hey, why don't you sit down and relax. You're starting to drive me crazy."
Alexander said.
Brian knew Alexander was joking, "Why don't you do something about it."
Brian challenged, raising his eyebrows at Alexander.
That was all the invite Alexander needed. He was up in a flash chasing
Brian around the room. Brian was quick but not quick enough and the chase
was over. Alexander had Brian over one of his shoulders and was carrying
him back to the bedroom. They had only had sex a few times and sometimes it
was tender and gentle but Alexander knew that with Brian's mood tonight, it
would be wild, savage and passionate.
Alexander threw Brian down on the bed and almost tore his clothes
off. Brian fought him because it was part of the ritual when he was like
this. He turned over on his stomach so he could try to claw his way off the
bed but Alexander was far too strong. Alexander pushed his dick into him
and was fucking him hard, sinking his fangs into Brian as he did.
Brian fought to get at Alexander but still moaned with pleasure. After
Alexander had his fill of Brian's blood, he allowed the boy to turn over,
still impaled on Alexander's cock. Brian tore into him, brought to a wild
fevered passion by Alexander's expert sexual onslaught.
Alexander smiled and thought to himself that this must be what it's like
to fuck a young cougar, just a whirling mass of fangs and claws.
When they were finished, Brian was lying on his stomach and Alexander was
rubbing his back. All the tension and agitation from earlier in the evening
was gone. He understood what Brian was going through. Brian had told
Alexander that he was having dreams about the night of his first kill and
that he had been having other dreams about people he met on the street and
hunting them.
"Alexander, do you ever hunt to feed anymore?" Brian asked.
"No, I lost my taste for killing just to feed a long time ago. I don't need
as much blood anymore and there are other ways to get it, if you have the
money." Alexander responded.
"You don't like to kill?"
Alexander thought for a moment. "Don't get me wrong, I still have the urge
every now and then. I admit that I really enjoyed killing your step father
and watching you kill the mugger was... satisfying. A long time ago,
someone dear to me was killed. It just took the pleasure out of it."
Brian became very interested. He always loved hearing Alexander's
stories. "Who died?"
"He was a vampire very much like you. I didn't turn him though. I found him
when I was hunting other vampires. He was a couple of years older than you
are now and had only been a vampire for a few weeks. When I found him, he
was hurt and confused. I nursed him back to health and taught him about
being a vampire. I stopped hunting other vampires after that. We hunted
humans together for a long time until he was killed by another vampire."
Alexander answered.
"Did you love him?" Brian asked
"Very much so. Things just weren't the same after him. I didn't hunt
anymore and I was alone, until I met you." Alexander smiled when he said
the last part.
The next day, Brian was skating again. He was down at the civic center near
the apartment where he and Alexander had seen the other boys skating. He
was the only one there. Brian was in a bad mood. He kept having dreams
about killing and he couldn't stop thinking about Alexander and the other
vampire he had been with before. He wished Alexander would hunt with him.
Lucas was the security guard at the civic center. He was checking the
security monitors and noticed there was a skater in the courtyard. They had
finally chased most of the skaters away and here was another one. At least
it gave him something to do.
Brian was still fuming about Alexander when he heard someone yell, "Hey
kid, can't you read the sign?"
Brian turned and saw the security guard coming up behind him, pointing at
one "No Skating" sign. He turned his back and said, "Whatever."
That pissed Lucas off. He was tired of these punk kids and their fucking
attitudes. He caught up to the kid and grabbed him by the shoulder, causing
him to stop and the skateboard to roll away.
"Don't touch me." Brian said as grabbed the guard's hand and turned to face
him. Brian squeezed the guy's hand hard until he could feel bones breaking
under the pressure. Lucas went down to his knees. Brian could feel the
anger and desire to kill rising in him. He looked around and saw the
security cameras.
"You're lucky" Brian said. He let go of the guard's hand, got his board and
skated off.
Lucas stayed there for a moment clutching his injured hand. He was shaken
but he could swear for a moment that the kid's eyes had turned red.
Brian didn't go skating the next night. He and his friend Jin went swimming
and then came back to Brian's place to play video games. Jin turned out to
be the perfect friend for Brian because his dad kept him so busy that they
only had a little time to spend with one another and it was usually at
night. Jin went to a private school and had a lot of homework. He also took
violin and tae kwon do lessons. On Saturdays, he went to a special Korean
school to learn about Korean history and culture. There wasn't a lot
pressure to do stuff outside during the day.
At first, Brian went to Jin's apartment but eventually Jin was allowed over
to Brian's, which he did most of the time. When Jin was around his parents,
he was very well behaved and almost boring. At Brian's, he was always
joking around and acted a little crazy.
Brian and Jin were changing after they went swimming. Brian noticed again
that Jin was kind of checking him out. It kind of bothered Brian the first
couple of times but not anymore. He had just slipped on his boxers when Jin
tried to tackle him, wearing only his boxers too. Brian easily wrestled Jin
to the ground and sat on top of him.
"So much for your tae kwon do", Brian teased.
"You're just way too strong for me butthead." Jin shot back as he struggled
to move Brian.
Brian let him fight a little while and then let Jin roll him over so
that Jin was on top of him. Jin was sitting right on Brian's penis and the
way he was moving, Brian started to get hard.
"Damn Brian, I think your getting a hard on." Jin said as he slid back so
he was sitting on Brian's legs. He reached down and grabbed Brian's
dick. Brian wasn't too surprised. There had been more than a few times when
they were wrestling that Jin's hand had "accidentally" ended up between
Brian's legs.
"You've got a pretty big boner." Jin reached into the fly of Brian's boxers
and pulled out his erection.
Brian was curious. He had never messed around with another boy before. He
just laid there and watched as Jin played with him. He wasn't into it at
first but now he was really getting turned on. He looked at Jin's face and
then down at his neck. Brian didn't even notice the taste of his own blood
as his fangs cut into the bottom of his mouth. He started to sit up and
reach for Jin's head. Fortunately, Jin was too busy concentrating on what
he was doing to notice his friend's face. Brian caught himself just in
time. He slid out from under Jin and stood up.
"Don't worry, I've got one too." Jin said and he pulled down his boxers to
prove it.
That didn't help Brian at all and he turned away. Jin sort of hopped over
to Brian with his boxers still around his knees, his hard little dick
bouncing up and down. He put his hand on Brian's shoulders. He was so close
that Brian could feel Jin's stubby, little boner, poking him in the butt.
"It's okay, Brian. No one's going to know, it's just us. If you want me to,
I'll suck it." Jin assured him.
"Get away from me!" Brian yelled. Brian wasn't sure he could control
himself much longer. He turned around and pushed Jin away. He hadn't meant
to push him as hard as he did. Luckily Jin fell back on Brian's bed. Brian
looked at Jin and saw that tears were already beginning to pool up in Jin's
eyes. Jin pulled up his boxers and quickly put on the rest of his clothes
and ran out of Brian's room. Brian didn't think he would ever be able to
forget the hurt and fear he saw in Jin's eyes.
Alexander came into Brian's room a couple of minutes later. He found Brian
sitting on his bed with his head between his hands. Alexander came and sat
down next to him and put his arm around Brian's shoulders. Brian looked
over at him with tears running down his face. He told Alexander everything
that happened.
"I know it's tough but you did the right thing. You put your friend ahead
of the friendship. Give him a couple of days and then call him and
apologize. I think he'll forgive you." Alexander consoled him.
"I don't think I can trust myself with him. I wanted to feed on him so bad"
Brian said.
Alexander held Brian until he fell asleep.
Days went by and Brian's mood became even blacker. He never talked to Jin
again. He decided that having human friends just didn't work for
vampires. He still went running with Alexander but he loved being on his
own in the city. The dreams of hunting humans when he slept had become
conscious thoughts when he was awake.
Tonight he was alone on the streets except for one car that slowly
approached him.
Brian wasn't the only predator on the streets that night.
Carl Vicksburg had been a hunter for years. He picked up young hustlers and
raped, beat and robbed them at knife point.
He was proud of himself because he had only killed three in the hundred or
so times he had applied his trade and didn't think it was his fault when it
happened. The ones that died just hadn't behaved. He had been cruising this
area for a couple of hours and hadn't had any luck yet. The police had
cracked down on prostitution recently and driven most of his potential
victims away. Then he saw a kid on a skateboard, a young one. The boy
looked like he was only twelve or thirteen years old. He smiled to himself,
it was his lucky night. He pulled up beside Brian and called him over.
Brian was just going to ignore the moron in the car but decided to see what
he wanted.
"What's going on kid?" Carl asked smiling.
"Nothing" Brian replied. He didn't like the way the guy was smiling at him.
"Nothing, huh? You up for something?"
Brian tilted his head and just looked at the guy. He had no idea what he
was talking about.
Carl saw the puzzled look on Brian's face and thought the kid had to be
stupid or on something. "How much?" He asked
Brian still didn't know what the man was asking, "How much for what?"The
kid had to be stupid, Carl thought. "How much to suck your dick? Is ten
okay?"
That was blunt enough for Brian. He shrugged and said, "Okay with me."
"Get in." Carl said as he opened the passenger door.
Brian got in the car. This time, it wasn't going to be an accident, he knew
this guy wasn't leaving the car alive.
Carl drove to another street that was poorly lit and found a place to
park. He stopped the car and looked at Brian. This kid was really hot, he
was going to be a real treat. Carl reached under the seat and pulled out
his knife and put it up to Brian's neck.
"You're going to do exactly what I say. Do you hear me, boy", Carl
ordered. He could barely control himself, he was so excited.
Brian looked down at the knife and back to Carl's face. "Nice knife." Brian
responded calmly.
The boy's calmness was unsettling; even if he was stoned, he should be more
panicked than this. Carl hesitated, unsure what to do next.
Brian grabbed Carl's hand with the knife with one hand and wrenched the
knife out of his hand with the other. "Really nice knife." Brian said as he
stuck the knife in Carl's stomach just below the navel and sliced
upward. Carl was going into shock when Brian started to feed.
It took Brian a while to cut off Carl's head with Carl's own knife. He
wasn't as smooth as Alexander but Alexander didn't have to do it in a car.
The next night when Brian woke up, Alexander called him into his
room. Brian could tell right away Alexander was pissed about
something. Alexander was sitting at the computer and shot Brian a hard look
when he came into the room.
"What do you know about this?" Alexander asked, pointing at the screen. It
was a news story from a local paper's website. The headline read "Body
Found in Car, Decapitated and Eviscerated".
Brian shrugged, "Beats me. What does eviscerated mean?"
Alexander narrowed his eye as he scanned Brian's face, "You're still a bad
liar. Did you do this?"
Brian looked down and then back to Alexander, "Yeah, he had it coming
though. The guy was a perv."
"How did you end up in his car? You must have been there to either kill him
or fuck him. Which one was it?"
Brian was shocked but tried not to show it. Alexander had never talked to
him that way before. "I meant to kill him when I got in the car." Brian
replied flatly.
"At least you're telling the truth now. I know what you're going through,
but you just can't keep doing this." Alexander said. There was more
softness in his voice.
Brian didn't care, he was getting pissed. "What'd you mean you know what
I'm going through? You had your time to kill and feed. You said it yourself
Alexander, you killed for how many years, hundreds, thousands? I want my
time! I want to hunt, kill and feed! It's who we are, it's what we are!"
"Times have changed since I last hunted. If I killed someone, it didn't end
up on the news the next day. We were rumors, stories in the night. You
didn't even try to hide the body." Alexander replied.
"Maybe if you hunted with me, like you did with that other kid you saved,
you could teach me."
Alexander shook his head slowly. He regretted telling Brian that
story. "There's just no need to hunt anymore Brian. Killing innocent humans
just doesn't appeal to me."
"The two I've killed weren't innocent and there's plenty more like them."
Brian argued.
Alexander thought his patience was infinite, especially when it came to
Brian, but he was beginning to lose his temper. "So you're going to become
a vampire vigilante? You're only going to kill murderers and rapists? When
you can't find them, prostitutes and jaywalkers? Then what? Someone's
mother, father or better yet some kid like Jin?"
Brian was looking away from Alexander. When he turned back, his eyes glowed
red with anger. "YESSSSS!" he hissed.
Brian stormed out the room. Before he left, he turned to Alexander and
said, "They're only human."
Brian got his skateboard and left the apartment, slamming the door behind
him. Alexander thought about going after him but changed his mind. They
both needed to cool off. He just hoped that Brian wouldn't do anything
stupid.
Alexander wasn't the only one who noticed that particular story on the web
site.
Borek knew right away it was his vampire. After reading Vicksburg's police
record, he figured out something else. Carl Vicksburg had been arrested
twice for soliciting sex with teenage boys. There was also the curious
police report from a security guard who claimed he had been assaulted by a
young skateboarder. Apparently the man's hand had almost been crushed. Then
Borek remembered seeing the boy on the skateboard his first week here. It
had to be him, his vampire was still a child.
Brian was moving quickly down the street. He was still mad and barely
stopped himself in time when someone stepped out in front of him. The man
was tall with long white hair. His skin was so pale, it almost looked
translucent. Although it was night, he wore dark sunglasses so Brian
couldn't see his eyes. The guy just stood in front of Brian and made no
attempt to move out of the way.
"What the fuck do you want?" Brian was in no mood for anyone's shit.
The man didn't respond. Brian looked at the strange figure in front of
him. Something wasn't right. He had a weird feeling in his stomach. Brian
picked up his skateboard and swung it as hard as he could. The deck
shattered against the side of the guy's face, opening a huge gash in his
cheek. He barely even moved but it knocked his glasses off. The man's eyes
didn't have irises. They were just big black pupils surrounded by pure
white. Brian watched as the cut in the man's cheek disappeared and he
smiled, revealing long and menacing fangs. It was another vampire. Brian
turned and ran like hell.
Brian knew the city better than anyone and he ran faster than he ever had
with Alexander. He was sure the other vampire hadn't been able to follow
him. So much for owning the night he thought to himself. He stopped and
listened, he couldn't hear anyone. Luckily he had his phone and he pulled
it out to call Alexander. As he did, he was grabbed from behind and lifted
in the air. He struggled as Borek's fangs tore into his neck and he fought
while being fed upon, until he passed out.
After Borek was done feeding, he dropped the boy on the ground. He savored
the other vampire's blood but was a little disappointed by the distinctive
human aftertaste. The kid had only been recently turned. If Borek was
fishing, he would have thrown this one back. Borek noticed Brian's phone on
the ground and picked it up. There was only one number saved in it's
memory. The boy wasn't much of a prize but whoever turned him might be. He
dialed the number . He smiled to himself, it looked like he had found just
the right bait.
The phone rang and Alexander went over and checked the caller
ID. Thankfully, it was Brian. When he answered the phone, it was an
unfamiliar voice.
"I've got your vampire boy." the voice on the phone said.
Alexander's heart sank. He knew it was another vampire. "What do you want?"
he replied trying to sound calm.
"I want you to come and get him. Let me tell you where."
As he listened to the directions, Alexander became afraid. He thought he
wasn't afraid of anything but he realized that the fear of losing Brian was
unbearable. After the other vampire gave him the directions, he quickly got
ready and left. It was only a few hours before dawn.
The instructions led him to an old wooden pier in the harbor. There was an
old boat repair shop on the pier where Brian was supposedly being held. The
place was ancient but not abandoned because there was still a light lit
over the front of the building. Alexander knew he was walking into a trap
but he still went straight through the front door. It opened into a small
office that was cluttered with paper, boxes and other junk. There was
another door leading out the back of the office. Alexander went through
that door into the shop area. The smell of gasoline and solvents was
overwhelming. If it wasn't for that, he would have easily been able to find
Brian by smell. He stood perfectly still and tried to hear or see anything.
Suddenly, someone flew at him from the top of the loft at the back of the
shop. Alexander barely had enough time to turn, and was hit with a glancing
blow. It was still hard enough to knock him to the floor where he landed in
a puddle of gasoline. Momentum caused the one who hit him to crash right
through the office wall and part of the building's electrical system,
sending a shower of sparks into the room around him. Alexander stood up
quickly and faced towards his attacker but no attack came. He waited for a
moment and then found the stairs that led up to the loft where the attacker
had come from.
He found Brian on the floor. He was hurt badly and needed blood but he was
still alive. The sparks had ignited a fire in the shop below that spread
fast because of the gasoline and the old dry wood. Alexander debated
whether to try to go out the front doors or through the windows that lined
one of the building's walls. He was leaning over to pick Brian up when he
heard footsteps on the stairs.
Alexander spun around to face his foe.
Borek had been slightly annoyed by the other vampire's quickness. He
hadn't expected it. Now there was the fire that made things even more
challenging. He had taken a moment to assess his options before deciding to
follow the other vampire up the stairs. Borek knew if he let them leave, it
would be almost impossible to find them again. He made it to the top of the
staircase and was shocked when the vampire faced him.
"Alexandros! I can't believe it!" Borek exclaimed. This was a wonderful
surprise. Alexandros would make one hell of a prize.
Alexander recognized the monster in front of him. Things were much, much
worse than he had thought. "Borek, it's been awhile."
"Indeed, Alexandros" he said with a menacing smile, "How long has it been
since I killed your last boy? Here you are again, risking your life for
another one. When are you going to learn not to fuck your food?"
Alexander knew there was no talking his way out of this. Borek was a
relentless vampire hunter that gave no mercy. He leapt at Borek hoping to
catch him by surprise landing a hard blow to Borek's face. Borek wasn't
even stunned and fought back hard, landing punches and kicks of his own.
The fight continued upstairs while the fire raged downstairs. The flames
were now tall enough to be seen above the loft and smoke filled the small
workshop.
The fight appeared to be a stalemate until seemingly out of nowhere,
Borek produced a long machete-like blade. He slashed at Alexander's throat
and almost missed but opened a slit along the front of his throat. It
wasn't fatal but it was distracting enough for Borek to land a hard kick to
Alexander's chest driving him backwards into the loft's guardrail.
Like everything else in the building it was old and decayed. It held for a
moment and then gave way, sending Alexander into the flames below.
Borek rushed to the edge of the loft just in time to see his prize burst
into flames as Alexander's fuel soaked clothes caught fire. He had won but
there would be no blood and no head tonight. He cursed himself and the
shithole he had chosen for his trap. He turned to leave through the windows
and noticed the boy on the floor. He thought about leaving him then
reconsidered. He could be useful. He picked Brian up and threw him through
the window to the pier below.
The next night, Brian woke up in a strange room like he had so many months
ago when he first came to Alexander's. Only this time, he was bound to some
kind of table so he couldn't move his arms or legs. He looked to one side
and saw a tube delivering blood into his right arm. He felt like shit and
his neck hurt where he had been bitten. Brian had thought the mysterious
vampire would have killed him for sure.
The same decay that had nearly killed Alexander ended up saving
him. Already weak with decay, the workshop's wooden floor couldn't hold up
in the intense fire. It gave way, spilling Alexander into the water,
dousing the fire. He was badly burned and in excruciating pain.
He could see the sky turning pink in the east and knew the sun would soon
be up. He thought about staying where he was and letting the sun end
it. Two thoughts kept him going, the remote possibility of Brian being
alive and killing Borek. He saw a narrow drainage pipe nearby and headed
there. It was a long painful trip but he made it into the pipe far enough
back to be safe from the sun. Alexander would stay there until he had
healed enough to leave.
Borek walked into the room where Brian was strapped to the table. He looked
the boy over. Not much to him but the little trick with the skateboard had
been most unexpected and showed the boy had spirit. He had also given Borek
one hell of a chase. Twice he had nearly lost the boy as they ran through
the city. Considering he had probably been a vampire less than a year, it
was all very impressive.
Brian was awake and watched Borek without saying anything.
"You and I have business to discuss, little one. First my name is
Borek. Yours?" Borek asked.
Brian didn't say anything for a moment. Borek's voice was deep and without
warmth. Brian could hear a trace of some foreign accent. He stared at
Borek's freakish eyes and finally said, "Brian"
"Very well Brian. Before we go further, I need to tell you something,
something that will upset you. I killed your friend, Alexandros." Borek
said and then he watched Brian's reaction.
The words felt like a kick in the stomach, "Alexander? You killed him?"
Already tears were forming in his eyes.
Borek simply nodded and said coldly, "Yes."
Brian started sobbing uncontrollably. He knew it was all his fault, the
killing, the argument, everything. As far as he was concerned, he had
killed Alexander.
Still such a little human, Borek thought as he watched Brian crying. "I
will come back later when you are done yowling over your dead boyfriend."
He said distastefully and he left the room.
Borek waited until the next night before he returned. Brian's initial
despair had turn into vengeful rage. He still felt responsible but he now
he wanted one chance at the freak that had killed Alexander, even if it
meant dying.
Borek could see the anger in the boy's eyes and that was okay. Anger was
an emotion he could understand. If he had come in here and the boy was
still blubbering he would have killed him on the spot.
"So are you ready to talk business today?" Borek asked.
Brian glared at him but managed to respond, "Sure. Anything you say."
Borek smiled at the boy's defiance, "I kept you alive and brought you here
because I thought you could be useful. I hunt vampires, it's my
hobby. Although I am quite efficient on my own, there are times when having
a partner would be useful. Especially, one as disarming as
you. Interested?"
Brian was taken off guard by the offer, "You want me to hunt with
you?""Sort of. Many vampires have human security guards. Humans are
notoriously susceptible to children. You would distract, kill them and
watch my back while I slay the vampires." Borek explained.
"Okay, I could do that. What do I get in return." Brian countered.
Borek started un-strapping Brian from the table. "You get to live here and
not on the streets or worse yet, end up dead." Borek said as he finished
releasing Brian.
As soon as Brian was free, he made an awkward lunge towards Borek. He
easily countered Brian's attack and grabbed him by the throat and slammed
him to the ground.
Borek lowered his face so that it was just an inch from Brian's.
"I would have been disappointed with you had you not tried. That being
said, if you try again, I will have your head. Understand?"
Brian was stunned from the impact but still managed to nod his head in
agreement.
Borek helped Brian to his feet. "One other thing, the blood I gave you was
the last. If you want more, you have to get it yourself."
Brian was surprised, "You want me to hunt?"
"Of course, you're a vampire aren't you?" Borek said. He opened the door
and motioned for Brian to leave the room. Brian stepped in front of him and
Borek put his hand on Brian's shoulder. He could feel Brian's tension when
he touched him.
"Don't worry, I have no intention of fucking you." He assured Brian and
then ran one of his fingers along Brian's neck. "I might, from time to
time, help myself to some of your blood. Call it rent, eh?"
Brian wasn't given a tour of Borek's house but he was allowed to roam
freely at night. Some doors were always kept locked and during the day he
had to return to his room and was locked in. During his explorations, he
had come across Borek's trophy room.
It was a grisly site, heads everywhere. In jars, shrunken and some even
mounted on the walls. Some looked human but many were clearly vampires
because of the fangs. He was afraid he would find Alexander's and was
relieved when he didn't. It would have been awful to see.
Borek did spend some time training Brian to fight, although many times, it
just seemed like an excuse for Borek to beat the crap out of him. It was
usually during these training sessions that Borek extracted his "rent". Not
very often but when he did, it was brutal. He never took so much blood that
Brian passed out like the first time but he was still dizzy after it was
over. Brian did learn and became a better, quicker fighter and even learned
how to use some basic weapons. Borek even gave him a long knife to remove
his victims' heads when he started hunting.
Brian started hunting right away to replace the blood that Borek
occasionally took. Borek lived in the mountains above the city and Brian
started going down to the city at night. He found his way to some of the
worst neighborhoods and started looking for prey. Brian didn't look for
criminals like he told Alexander. Instead he pretty much assumed that
anyone out at night in these neighborhoods had to be up to no
good. Besides, they were only humans.
He fed once or twice a week. Anymore and he was afraid it would get out of
hand. He dumped his headless bodies in trash bins and abandoned cars. If
they were discovered, the murders were usually dismissed as gang or drug
related. He still missed Alexander but as the weeks went by, he enjoyed
hunting more and more.
He also went out on his first hunt with Borek. It went just as
planned. The vampires Borek were hunting lived in a large house with
security guards posted at the gate.
Brian's job was to ride by on a skateboard and pretend he was lost. When he
got both guards to come over, he killed them quickly and silently, allowing
Borek to slip into the house unnoticed. Brian followed and witnessed Borek
in action. The vampires were a couple, a male and female. Borek quickly
disabled the woman by tearing out her throat with his bare hands. Then
after a brief struggle with the man, he almost drank him dry before
beheading both.
On the jet back to Borek's city, Brian just stared at him with a kind of
fearful awe. He had never seen anything like Borek before.
Borek noticed the boy staring at him and he finally asked, "What's wrong
with you, didn't like what you saw? Do you think I'm some kind of monster?"
Brian shrugged his shoulders, not sure how to reply, "I don't know."
Borek looked at him, "You think I'm that much different than Alexandros? I
hunted with him before he decided to act like a human again."
"You hunted with Alexander?" Brian asked eagerly.
"Yes. I know he probably told you how he did it for the good of the species
but I saw the lust in his eyes when he killed. He was one of the best and
one of the most brutal. Then he met that other boy and everything
changed. I sent three of my best hunters to kill the boy and
Alexandros. Two, he killed outright and the third, he staked out for the
sun. After that, the two of them cut a swath of death through Europe like
you can't imagine. Alexandros was no saint. I hunted them both for two
hundred years before I eventually caught up with them and killed the boy."
Brian sat there in disbelief. Borek had killed Alexander's first boy and
then Alexander.
Brian's life became a routine of prowling the night, hunting and
feeding. Everything was going along smoothly until one night.
He had been tracking a man for a couple of blocks waiting for the right
time to make his kill. It would be easy, the guy was only the same height
as Brian and scrawny too.
Brian made his move and knocked the man to the ground. He was getting ready
to bite his neck when Brian saw his face. It was just a boy. The look of
fear and horror reminded him of Jin, the day he had almost killed
him. Brian stopped and stared at the boy's panic stricken eyes. He could
smell the boy's urine as the kid pissed his pants. Just like with Jin, he
couldn't it do it now. Brian left the boy on the ground, disappointed with
himself.
Alexander stayed in the drainage pipe for over two weeks before he was able
to creep out one night. He snuck back into his apartment still raw and
scarred. It would take three more weeks and gallons of blood before he was
fully recovered and his appearance was back to normal. During that time, he
began searching for Borek.
He knew that Borek was probably from another city and most likely had
traveled by private jet or plane. Alexander looked through flight records
for private aircraft leaving the morning of the attack or the following
night. Then he checked into the background of the owners using a private
investigative agency. It took over three months but he had finally found a
very likely candidate.
Austin Jones, Borek's personal assistant, was working late. His job paid
well but his boss was a demanding pain in the ass. He had finally finished
for the day when there was a knock at the door. He was pissed, he was never
going to get out here. "Come on in." Austin said reluctantly.
The door opened and a stranger walked in. Austin looked him over, the guy
was hot, dark brown hair with brilliant blue eyes. Maybe his night was
getting better. "What can I do for you." he said using his best pick-up
smile.
Alexander eyed the little twit in front of him. The guy was trying to flirt
with him. Any other time, it might have been entertaining but not tonight.
"I need to find your employer." Alexander asked.
Austin could tell this guy was only about business. "I do executive
services for a corporation. I really don't have a direct employer." He
replied in a dismissive tone.
Alexander could tell he was lying and he didn't have any patience for this
game. He walked around the desk and picked Austin up by the hair with one
hand and placed the thumb of the other next to one of his eyes.
"I really need his home address now. If I have to ask again you're going to
lose that eye." Alexander said.
Austin knew this guy wasn't kidding. He was afraid of Borek but he wasn't
here right now. Austin nodded his head as best as he could and Alexander
put him back in his chair. He put a pen and some paper in front of
him. Austin wrote down Borek's home address.
Alexander picked up the paper, "That's the correct address right? Because
if it's not, I'll find you and it'll be ugly."
"Don't worry, it's right." Austin stammered.
"Good. I believe you." Alexander said. He reached around and grabbed Austin
by the chin and snapped his neck. Alexander left to go meet Borek.
Alexander waited until just before dawn outside of Borek's house. He wanted
to be sure there was no chance of escape. When it was time, he found a side
door that he could force open. He knew it probably was alarmed but he
didn't care. It would just make it easier if Borek found him.
Brian was still on his way back from his night out and was really pushing
it to make it home before sunrise. The eastern sky was turning orange and
he had a way to go before he got to Borek's house.
Alexander was looking for Borek when Borek shoved his blade into
Alexander's back, once, twice, then three times. Then he tore into
Alexander's neck with his fangs. Alexander managed to fight his way free
but dropped to his knees, unable to get away.
Borek stood over Alexander, "You are very lucky Alexandros and very
resilient but I think your luck has run out."
Alexander slid a short knife unseen out of his jacket pocket. He drove that
knife right between Borek's legs and into his perineum. Borek howled and
doubled over in pain. Alexander pulled the knife out and thrust it into one
of Borek's eyes. Borek staggered away from Alexander holding his damaged
eye with one hand and his crotch with the other. The sun was just appearing
over the horizon as Brian walked through the door. He had barely made
it. He walked into the room and saw Borek standing there with a knife in
his eye and blood dripping from his crotch. Then he saw Alexander, he was
still alive.
Borek saw Brian, "Kill him.", he ordered. That would be the final
humiliation for Alexandros killed by his own boy. Brian saw Borek's blade
and picked it up. He looked at Alexander on his knees and covered with
blood. Alexander looked at him. All that mattered to him was that Brian was
still alive. Even if he died today, it would be okay because he died
knowing Brian was alright.
"Do it Brian. Kill him and make your choice between being a true vampire or
a fake human." Borek commanded again. Brian made his decision and was
quicker than Borek ever imagined. He drove the blade into Borek's
chest. Borek was off balance and the force of the blow drove him backwards.
Borek's house had very large windows that had been painted black to keep
out the sunlight.
He went through the window but he was able grab hold of Brian's arms to
keep from falling into the sun drenched yard below. Brian fought hard but
was losing the struggle to keep Borek from pulling him into the sunlight.
Borek was screaming in pain as his neck and the back of his head began to
blister. Just as they were beginning to fall, Brian felt arms reach around
his stomach and pull him out of Borek's grip. Borek fell, screaming, into
the sun.
Alexander dragged Brian away from the window and back further into the
house. They collapsed into each other arms.
Brian smiled at Alexander, "What took you so long?" He planted a big kiss
on Alexander's mouth.
Alexander returned Brian's smile, "I knew that stupid skateboard was going
to get you in trouble." Alexander joked in a whisper because of his wounds.
They spent the next couple of weeks at Borek's house rediscovering their
friendship and each other. One evening, when Brian woke up, he found
Alexander sitting at Borek's computer. Brian sat on his lap and Alexander
wrapped his arms around him. Brian looked at the screen, "What are you
doing?"
Alexander told him, "Just checking things out. You know there's more of
them. More hunters just like Borek. They keep score, it's like a game."
"No shit. How many?" Brian asked. It was scary thinking there were more
vampires like Borek.
"A lot, it's a network." Alexander said, "Brian, do you still want to go
hunting with me?"
Brian didn't have to think about it. He looked at Alexander with his most
impish smile, "As long as it's with you, I'll do anything."
Alexander smiled back, "Then lets go hunt the hunters."
