Chapter 6

Chicago day 3 I meet Don's Dad:


	As David and I walked into the office a rather rotund man stood and
to be sure, he is Italian, and as I walked towards his desk he came around
and I extended my right hand to shake his in stead he wrapped his arms
around me and he lifted me from the floor, Don yelled "Dad please don't
hurt Mr. McMasters" I smiled and said to Don "I'm not hurt and seeing that
I spent my youth in an Italian neighborhood all your Dad did was to give me
a traditional Italian greeting, and a quick check to see if I was packing
any heat" his Dad was not offended at my remark and said "Don he is
everything that you said he was, even if he is not Italian" now it was my
turn to laugh.

	David was frozen in the doorway and he was upset but not afraid, I
looked at him and said "come in and meet Don's Dad" his whole composure
changed and he walked in and extended his hand to Dons Dad, and Don said
"watch out this one bites" at that everyone but David laughed all he did
was blush a deep crimson, and Franco (Don's Dad) gently shook David's hand
and the big man's hand completely covered David's hand.

	After Franco released David he came and stood by my side as he did
I put my arm around his shoulder and softly hugged him to me he looked up
at me and said "Don don't look anything like his Dad" the thought went thru
my mind `out of the mouths of babes oft times come gems' Franco said "like
you he is my step son and I do love him like you love Mr. McMaster" I felt
a shock go thru David and as he flinched I tighten my grip, and he
understood that Franco could see our true love.

	 Franco returned to his seat behind his desk and David and I sat
side by side on a small couch across from Franco's desk Don didn't move as
his job was to prevent anyone from disturbing but he didn't move to the
door, but from where he stood he was the door man David was on high alert
so I said to Franco "is there a real purpose for this meeting" Franco
smiled and said "I like a man that comes to the point quickly" I shook my
head and said "I will be teaching a class at the industrial arts school
starting Monday morning and I need to pick up a few things before it
starts".

	Franco asked "are you a school teacher" I smiled and handed David
my card and he stood and put it on Franco's desk, came back and resumed
sitting by my side.
	Franco looked at the card and said "if you are the Executive Vice
President of P&M Manufacturing, why don't you have someone else do the
teaching of these classes at the vocational school.

	I looked at him and said "you're the second person to ask that
question" David piped up and said "my mother asked that question and
figuratively ended with egg on her face" Franco looked at me and said to
Don "take the half pint to Peppies for a super milk shake" and don't rush
back as Mr. McMaster have some business to discuss" David looked like he
was about to respond so I said "here is a 5 spot bring me back a Vanilla
milk shake like the one you get but stay with Don until his `Dad' calls for
you to come back" David took the hint and kept his mouth shut.

	After they had gone I took a chair and sat across from Franco and
said "I think I know what you want to say but I will give you the floor"
Franco smiled and said "I know that you are responsible for the
disappearance of some of the lowlife gangsters on the south side of this
town" I had a smile as well as I said "why would I do that" he carefully
looked at me and said "that is the part I haven't figured out yet" I smiled
and said "when you do let me know".

	I stood and as I did he stood up and said "my Don is my lover and I
know that David is yours but you could never have destroyed the gangsters
on your own, the only reason that I asked you to come to my office is to
truly thank and compensate you" I smiled and thought the world hinges every
thing on money, Oh well.

	I said "call Don and tell him, David and I have to go home, now
please", he frowned and made the call as Don drove David and I home David
whispered `I think Don is gay' I softly chuckled and said "you could be
right about that".

	When we arrived at our hotel Pat came to our side and said "there
is a woman in your suite, and she said that she is David's mother, plus she
had 2 children with her, so I let her into your rooms" so I smiled and said
"with that kind of hotel mismanagement I will be moving to another hotel as
soon as I can find a suite that I can use" David turned sheet white and Pat
said "I'm sorry I thought you would want me to extend her some form of
hospitality, considering that she is David's Mother" I looked at him and
said "number 1 she is his step mom, but what you did is OK with me but in
the future some hotel guest may take it as a violation of his or her
privacy" he took a deep sigh and said "I am truly sorry that I overstepped
my authority" at that moment we stepped out of the lift and I looked at Pat
and said "you go back to work and David and I will go to Margot".

	David and I stood side by side as we entered my suite, at that
moment all hell broke loose and Little Mary and the squirt ran to David and
he was hit so hard that he was sitting on the suitcase wrack and he had a
loving sister in his arms and a brother fighting to get into his arms, I
looked at Margot and said "I wonder what it would be like if David had been
gone for a week or two" she looked a little shocked and said "God forbid
they love him and that he would do anything for them" I looked back at
David and he was so smothered that he couldn't stand up so I yelled "what
about me" and Squirt came to me with his arms out, so I picked him up and
kissed his cheek and sat him on my knee.

	He wrapped his arms around my neck and softly kissed my cheek and
he said "I wove you too" I smiled and said to Margot "to what do we owe as
a reason for this visit to our humble abode" I smiled and stood taking the
little on with me in my arms and he was a content as he could be, I walked
to Margot and deposited him to her lap as I did David whispered something
to Mary and she moved to the couch along side her mother, I looked at
Margot and she said "I need some more time and rather than call you
considering that phones are so impersonal I felt that I needed to ask you
in person" as she finished I looked at David and some color returned to his
up till now sheet white face.

	I looked her in the eye and said "to be perfectly honest I will be
using him as a class room monitor, seeing he is not much younger than the
boys I will be teaching, and in fact he will be paid for his services" she
looked shocked and said "David will you be comfortable with Mr. McMasters
being your boss" he smiled and said "as a matter of fact I like the way he
handles me and he is very easy to get along with" I responded "well I guess
that is settled, that is unless you have something against his working for
me" His answer was fast and to the point "No sir".

	Margot looked at me and said "that is the 1st time he has ever
answered a question that quickly and with respect" I laughed and said "he
knows that anything less could put him back as a baby sitter for Mary and
Dennis" as I said that I looked at David and he was blushing but had a big
smile on his face.

	She stood shook my hand and said "as I said before he loves you" I
smiled and said "I don't think its love it is mutual respect and he misses
his dad and I have been inserted into that empty space in his heart" now it
was Margot's turn to blush and David smiled but said nothing.

	We all trooped to the lobby and Peter smiled as we headed to the
street, as we stepped out the door man whistled and the Limo pulled up and
Margot looked at me and before she could say any thing, I said "its one of
the perks" we piled in and were off to `Norman's office' within 5 minutes
we were helping Margot and the little ones out and into the lobby of the
building, as we did a rather tall and well dressed gentleman, with a
practiced eye his clothing including shoes was worth over $1000, the total
of my whole closet was not near $1500 and I could make at least a dozen
changes including seasonal.

	Margot said something to him out of my hearing range and he stepped
forward and said "Mr. McMaster it's nice to meet you, and how are you
doing" he said to David there was no animosity as David said as Norman
shook my hand "Norman it's nice that you came down to meet us" I looked at
Margot and said "David and I have dinner planed with the school
Superintendent, so we need to run or we will be late" Norman and Margot's
gave me a strange look and Norman said "you know Ed Kaminski" I smiled and
said "yes we just sold 4 new machines to the School Board, to teach on".

At that David and I waved to the children and climbed back into the Limo
that Don was driving and we departed swiftly and quietly, as we did really
have a dinner appointment with the school Superintendent.
	As Don slithered thru the early evening traffic David was amusing
himself watching a cartoon on the overhead TV monitor coming from a local
TV station the news commentator came on the screen with a news flash from
the local on the spot TV news reporter and the Gist of the report was that
the gangland gun fire had erupted in the South side of Chicago, and it was
reminiscent of the roaring 20's when gang land shootings were the standard
of the day.

	The reported said that it had one difference the only ones that
were killed were local mobsters and their bodyguards without anyone else
getting hurt, `Its called collateral damage' it was strange that it went
off like a precision military operation, David and I looked at each other
and I said "that's the way it goes, sometimes".

	When we arrived at the same Jewish deli that Don was assaulted in,
David said "and I got dressed up to come here" he instantly knew he had mis
spoke and he whispered "please excuse me" I helped him out and as we stood
and waited for Don I whispered "try to keep your mouth shut and listen for
a change" as we stepped in a man the size of a professional football player
stood and shook my hand, and I said "Ed Kaminski I presume" I then realized
that he was a Polish Jew as he looked at Don and David and I said "Don is
my driver and David is to be my teaching assistant considering that he is
closer to the students age and he can see things that I could easily miss"
Ed looked at David and said rather loudly "he looks a little light weight
for the boys that he will be working with" the counter man said loud enough
to be heard a block away "Ed don't let his size fool you he dropped one of
Pauley's big boys with one shot" Ed's eyes looked at David then at the
counter man and said "no way" and the counterman said as he put our water
on the table "Ed believe me he can fight like a young tiger" in the mean
time poor David was blushing so much that he looked almost Purple.

	At that moment two of Pauley's boys came in and headed straight for
Don but before they got to him they were both on the floor trying to catch
their breath, and the counterman said "it looks like two more for down
town" Ed turned to me and said "now I have seen every thing" I smiled and
said "no you haven't he is also very intelligent and he follows orders".
