CHAPTER 4

(Revisiting Chapter 3)

As the doctor, Rob, and the medical team made their way across the Yard,
Matt put his arm around his son's shoulders. "Ok, monster bait, we've got
one more bridge to cross to get home. Let's get to it!"

(Continuing Our Story: "Going Home" )

Jamie caught his first panoramic view of the Bay country from the great
bridge that crossed the Chesapeake at Annapolis. Below them, there were
all sorts of boats on the water. Above, gulls and other birds complained
loudly about a small plane that had invaded their space. Following Matt's
finger that was pointed towards the southeast, Jamie was able to see a
small town nestled on the shore. "Awesome, Dad... awesome!" Jamie almost
yelled in excitement. "Wow!"

>From the point where the bridge returned traffic to land on the "Eastern
Shore" of Maryland, it was a relatively short trip to the little town of
Anne's Harbor. Given the time and their good spirits, Matt gave Jamie a
short tour rather than return directly to their home. From most points in
Anne's Harbor, you could see one of its main features, Queen Anne's Square,
a large rectangular area of lawn that gradually sloped downhill from the
college at the head of the Square right to the water. On the south side of
the Square - which is where they were - the town stretched from the
college, down to the water, and a bit south along the shore. It was a
picturesque place of Georgian buildings in brick, some of which were public
buildings, some shops, homes, and even a church or two. Matt told the boy
that many of them dated back to first half of the eighteenth century.
Jamie gave an explosive "Ha!" when he noticed a few obviously upscale
restaurants. From the look on his face, he thoroughly enjoyed muttering to
Matt that he might be sorry that his folks had trained him to enjoy good
food! Parenthetically, he had to agree that one of the shops made some of
the best ice cream he had ever tasted! Scattered throughout the town were
frame buildings, most in the Victorian style, a few shops, but mostly homes
that appeared to be beautifully maintained. Great old shade trees that
towered over buildings and brick sidewalks lined the streets. A quiet,
somewhat wider street that gave access to the town (and led to a busier
highway not far beyond) bordered the Bay and three sides of the Square.

At the head of the Square stood the small (and very old) college. In fact,
Matt said that two of the buildings, original to the college, were older
than anything in the county. Indeed, this small school had been well
regarded in colonial times. It had always been a liberal arts college, but
Matt said proudly that it gave its students a solid foundation for graduate
study or other paths in life. After they had driven around and Jamie had
seen the building that housed Matt's office, they headed home.

As his uncle drove down the road that bordered the Square on the north,
Jamie wondered where his new home would be located. He was delighted that
it was the very last house on the road with the entrance facing the bottom
of the Square while one side faced the water. What a view! He grinned at
Matt as they cleaned a little trash out of the car, removed their luggage
from the trunk, and headed up the stone path to an old, beautiful (and very
large) brick house. "Dad, it's enormous!" Jamie squeaked. "You're the
only one who lives here, right?" "Well, Big Stuff, I never could stand
being cramped. You're wrong, though, I'm not the only one who lives here.
A redheaded guy who's smart, handsome, and has a big heart lives here,
too!" With that, he inserted the key into the lock on the front door as
Jamie grinned and hoisted the luggage.

As the entered the wood-paneled foyer, Jamie looked around - and quickly
decided that he definitely could live here! (He almost changed his mind
when a giant Great Dane knocked him off his feet and stood over him
slobbering and violently wagging his tail. "Down, Grunt!" Matt said in a
command voice. "Nah, Dad," Jamie yelped, his arms around the behemoth's
neck. "He's only trying to make friends...I think.") Downstairs, Matt
showed him the living room, a formal dining room, a good sized kitchen with
a small breakfast nook, Matt's study, and two bathrooms. A short
passageway led to one more room in what was a small, separate wing of the
house. To Jamie's delight, it housed a good sized pool. Upstairs, there
was a master bedroom suite with its own bathroom, three bedrooms (one of
which was "officially" the redhead's), and a second full bath. A trapeze
door led to the attic. As they returned to the first floor, both young men
collapsed wearily into comfortable chairs in Matt's study. A multipaned
window looked out at the sun as it began to set on the Bay. "Oh, man,"
Jamie moaned, "It's great, but I'm bushed! I had my eyes set on one of
those little restaurants downtown, but I don't think I can make it. Fact
is, I'm not sure I'm worth much beyond getting some take-out, cleaning up,
and crawling into the sack. Do they have any good Chinee in Anne's
Harbor?" Not too long thereafter, they sat informally in the breakfast
nook, surrounded by cartons of savory food from which they were dipping
enthusiastically. Matt noticed that his ward was quite an expert with
chopsticks. But then, he didn't exactly have to resort to a spoon either!

Matt was already in bed - and nearly asleep - when Jamie came out of the
bathroom after taking his shower. He did vaguely remember the gorgeous and
now completely naked lad walking towards him. Without pausing, or putting
on his briefs, he lifted the covers and climbed in. Automatically, the
man's arms welcomed the warm, lithe body that molded itself to his. God,
the boy smelled good! He remembered thinking that he shouldn't be doing
this...but, then, he didn't move again until morning! Outside of insisting
that Jamie maintain an "official" bedroom, Matt continued to feel that this
was something that shouldn't be made into a "big deal". The youngster
needed to feel a loving acceptance, a new foundation for his life given all
he had experienced. He also needed to discover that not all gays were
"dangerous". As we shall see, this decision was not without its problems.

(The Annapolis Connection)

Jamie's early weeks in Anne's Harbor were hectic. He had to be registered
for the middle school; Matt and he got some fishing in - and the older man
found that his ward never came home without some fish, usually a better
catch than he; they heard both good news and bad from Rob about the
Academy's Sponsor Program. It seems that the Program had been designed
solely for Plebes, or entering first year midshipmen. Obviously, the
desire was to provide a transition between life in close families and the
more impersonal, pressured military life at Annapolis. Yes, a Sponsor
could maintain a connection with a midshipman through his or her later
years, but that was not the primary goal. Rob had actually gone over to
the Medical Clinic and talked with Dr. Richards. The Lt. Commander said
that he would gladly speak with people in the program, but that was
probably not the way to go, at least initially. The Academy was much given
to its traditions (and chains of command) and didn't particularly
appreciate those who attempted to circumvent them! The doctor recommended
that he first speak with Jamie about sponsoring a Plebe. Given that
request - and the relationship that had already been built through Rob's
travail - he might be able to help piggyback a request to sponsor Rob onto
the standard petition. Indeed, that was exactly the way things turned out
- to the great satisfaction of all concerned. Rob was especially
enthusiastic, saying that he would meet the Plebe, a young man from
Savannah who already seem well-liked by his roommates. For approved
reasons, he had missed the initial selection of sponsors and the reception
at the Academy in early August. He'd be back to them with news of further
developments.

It didn't take Rob long to get back to them! On a Tuesday night, he called
and told Matt that there was no football game at home on the coming
Saturday. Both Jeb and he could be away from the Academy between noon on
Saturday and midnight. Further, Jeb would be allowed to drive with him
over to Anne's Harbor. Could they put up with two swabbies? Matt laughed
with delight, gave him an enthusiastic "Yes!", told him that Jamie would
send him a map by e-mail, and reminded him that the boys should come
hungry. Robbie rewarded him with a loud snicker before they signed off!

It was only 12:45 p.m. or so when a small Ford Focus arrived and two very
handsome, uniformed Midshipmen climbed out to meet their grinning hosts.
Jamie wasn't about to let amenities get in the way of greeting his Big Bro
and just launched himself at his hero. Robbie just gave a howl of laughter
and held Jamie slightly off the ground with one arm while he shook hands
with Matt with the other. "Gentlemen," the tall Second Classman announced,
"let me introduce a fellow member of the Brigade, Midshipman Jeb Burns of
Savannah. Today he's only a tadpole, though in time Plebes have been known
to become quite human!" A handsome blond stepped forward. No more than
5'7" with the build of a gymnast...and definitely "socially polished", he
shook hands smoothly with "Professor Wreston" and then grinned widely at
Jamie as he handed him a Navy pennant. "Maybe you can use this in your
room, Jamie," he drawled in a rich Deep South accent. In any case, if you
and your dad come over to Annapolis for a football game - or, maybe, for
one of my gymnastics meets - you're going to need to wear some blue and
gold!" "Thanks, Jeb," Jamie said excitedly. Then with a wicked smirk he
added, "I'm a little surprised though. Aren't your pennants BLACK and
gold?" Feigning shock, Jeb turned to Rob, saying, "I'm afraid you were
correct, Mr. Baker. This one's dangerous!" Collapsing into laughter, the
four young men made their way into the house.

As they stood in the foyer, Rob spoke quietly with Matt, noting that the
midshipmen had brought more informal clothing, as he had explained in his
latest e-mail. If they could use a room for a few minutes..." "Jamie,"
Matt said, "If you will take our guests up to the bedroom that will be
theirs if we can talk them into coming over for a weekend..." "Yes, sir,
Dad, sir!" the irrepressible redhead chortled. "Right this way,
gentlemen." Matt simply groaned, shook his head, and pointed to the
stairs. Up on the second floor, Jamie noted that the room to which he had
shown them was "right next door to his" and advised them to come back
downstairs quickly. There was a ton of food, but it wouldn't last long if
he started chowing down before they returned!

Whether due to Jamie's warning or the fact that they, too, were suffering
from near starvation, the two midshipmen were back downstairs almost before
they were missed. When they saw the heavily laden dining room table, their
eyes brightened and the level of conversation fell off appreciably for the
next forty minutes or so! When they finally pushed back from the table
with groans and rolling eyes, Matt said, "I have a feeling that Jamie wants
to introduce you to our pool (In the background there were loud
exclamations of pleasure!), but right now I think the three of you would
sink like rocks! How about a short tour of the town and of our college?
We'll all fit in my car. "Why the car, Dad?" Jamie asked. We could just
cut across the Square and we'd be there. Besides, it would help me start
my new program!" "Well, Big Red, if we were to walk around town, our
guests would have to get back into their uniforms. Let's spare them that."
"Thank you, effendi!" muttered the still stuffed blond. He then turned to
Jamie and asked about this "new program". "I want to get myself in better
shape, Jeb. I'm starting to grow fast - and I really want to develop
muscles rather than fat!" "Good man," Jeb observed. "My dad got me
involved when I was thirteen and fourteen, and I've always been grateful to
him. Maybe I can help some. Let's see later on, ok?" "Fantastic, Jeb,
that's just great!" the redheaded one exclaimed "Ok, guys," Matt
interrupted, "pile into the car and let our guests see what a small Eastern
Shore town looks like!" And see they did - and were very complimentary.
(Note that one of their favorite stops was the ice cream shop - even if
Matt had to bring the ice cream out to the two Mids in the car!)

Upon returning home, Matt excused himself to his study, citing one more
assignment he had to prepare. "You know where everything is, Jamie," he
said. "If you don't find what you need...indoors or out, yell. And, yes,
there's a little surprise arriving later on this afternoon. If you are
going to be far from the house, let me know." "Thanks, Dad," Jamie
exclaimed. "How about it, guys, is the pool a good place to start?"
Robbie sided up to the redhead, saying, "We didn't bring any suits, Jamie.
What's the drill?" "No sweat, Rob. We don't use them unless there are
girls or older people around. Does that cause any problems for you guys?"
"Nah, bring on the pool, Red!" Jeb said emphatically. "It's sure not as
bad as Savannah around here, but it's still sticky and hot."

Quickly, Jamie led them out into the "pool wing" of the house and directed
them to a small dressing room with adjoining lavatory and shower
facilities. As he shed his own clothes, Jamie observed his guests
enviously, even a little hungrily. Man, what bodies! If only he could
look that way! Soon they were padding over to the edge of the pool and
diving in. For a good hour the young men cavorted in the cool water,
throwing a water polo ball around and playing a version of "King of the
Mountain" in which the major goal seemed to be to maximize the contact of
flesh on flesh. Finally, Rob tired and shouted, "Mr. Burns, I'm going to
go upstairs and catch the last of the game on TV. You and Jamie come up
when you're ready." "Yes, sir, thank you," Jeb replied, hewing to the
regulations that bound the relationships between plebes and upper classmen
even when together in the home of their mutual sponsor.

After Rob had quickly showered, dressed, and left the pool area, Jeb swam
over to Jamie and asked if he were still interested in the tips on physical
development. Vigorously shaking some of the water out of his red hair, he
exclaimed, "Oh man, I am so interested!" "Ok, let's move over to the
shallow end of the pool," Jeb continued. Once, there Jeb stood and pulled
a grinning Jamie to his feet. "In situations like this, guppie," he said,
"many guys feel a lot of embarrassment - though it's not cool to admit it.
If we're going to work closely together, I want you to lose any
embarrassment about our bodies...yours and mine. Time's a wastin'...
Carefully run your eyes over my body... now!" Nearly frozen between fear
and desire, Jamie slowly and tentatively forced himself to begin to closely
examine the compact midshipman who stood perhaps an inch shorter than he.
The heavy forearms, the upper arms... He started when Jeb suddenly flexed
his bicep, but accepted the invitation to grasp the tremendous knot of
muscle. Breathing a little harder, his eyes moved to the magnificent
deltoids, the traps, and then down onto the solid pecs and the hard ridges
of his abs. The midshipman's massive upper body flexed. "Jeb," the
youngster almost choked. "You got rid of all of your body hair." "Yep,"
the plebe answered. "I like it that way. Comfortable...easy to care
for...and the chicks eat it up! (Pause.) Keep going...examine everything,
Jamie, everything!"

Flaming red and beginning to tremble, Jamie openly eyed Jeb's prominent,
smoothly shaved tackle. "Wow!" he shuddered, as his own (not unimpressive)
equipment came hard erect, reaching beyond his navel. Jeb merely said,
"Nice, Red," adding, "When you're full grown, that's going to be
world-class. Continue, please." Deciding that he just might get through
this without exploding, Jamie ran his eyes down the Mid's powerful quads.
"Your thighs seem just a little short given the upper body," he said
thoughtfully. "Right," the blond replied. "Good observation. If my upper
body weren't quite as muscled, the proportion would be somewhat better -
but it still wouldn't be perfect. It doesn't make any difference on the
rings, but it's the reason that I don't always get 'firsts' in bodybuilding
contests." With that, he turned around and murmured, "From the neck
down..." The thick neck, the flaring lats, the heavily muscled back all
received Jamie's inspection. Appearing to lose his balance for a moment
and stumble, the youth reached out and braced his hand against Jeb's sturdy
buttocks. With a muttered "Sorry", he stepped back and completed his
visual inspection of the Mid's thighs and the graceful arch of his calves.
"Fan__tastic," the lad breathed, his breath catching momentarily in his
throat as he tried to swallow.

"Good show, guppie," Jeb said lightly as he dropped back into the water.
Looking back up at Jamie, he continued, "Would you believe that at thirteen
I showed less muscle development than you have today. I'll be eighteen in
the spring. When's your birthday, by the way?" "May 5th," Jamie replied.
"Good," Jeb replied. "Here's a promise. If you are willing to work with
me for the school year...without embarrassment, following every direction I
give you as regards food, exercise, running, and all the rest...I can
promise you that you won't believe the way you look as you move into your
fourteenth year. I should tell you that I gave a similar promise to a guy
who is probably the top fitness instructor at Georgia Tech. Believe that
I've never regretted it."

"You have my promise, Jeb...100 percent!" Jamie exclaimed. "Good!" Jeb
replied. "Now let's get ourselves together and get back to the others.
I'll speak with your dad and ask him to pick up a few things for you.
Nothing too heavy, for you're not ready for that work for a few years yet.
Ok?" "Super!" the exultant guppie shouted. "You just don't know how hard
I'll work, Jeb! Thanks!" Arms around each other's necks and shoulders,
the boys headed for the showers.

Upstairs, Matt joined them and all four watched the end of the Navy-Georgia
Tech game from Atlanta. The reader may guess that Jeb was having some
loyalty problems, for he had been a Tech fan since he was a little guy.
Rob even growled at him once, but all was forgotten as they put on quite a
show rooting for the Blue and Gold.

Matt couldn't quite believe that the boys could eat another meal, but on
the advice of other Sponsors he arranged with an Italian lady in town to
provide two extra large, custom pizzas. Together with more ice cream, they
disappeared almost as quickly as they appeared! For some months,
parenthetically, all three boys remembered these pizzas and requested them
time and again. Also, before the two Mids had to leave, Jeb and Matt
discussed the former's willingness to give Jamie some guidance in sound
bodybuilding and agreed to purchase the few items that were needed. If Rob
were not available on a weekend when the boys wanted to work, he offered to
drive over to Annapolis and pick Jeb up. Later in the day, he heavily
praised Jamie for his decision to begin working out in a "safe and sane"
manner.
