Chapter Thirty Five

When Curtis and I returned to the house, we had to wait a little while for
dinner to be ready. I asked Curtis to take a walk with me and he agreed. We
strolled across our private beach holding hands. "You have taken a liking to
Doctor Pellphrey haven't you?" I asked Curtis with a smile.

"He's really cute and he's funny too." Curtis replied.

"Well, don't forget that his is a lot older than you, son. And his body is
much more mature than yours." I advised.

"He is only twenty nine years old, dad. I am almost thirteen. There is less
difference between our ages than there was between you and James when you
two got together." Curtis replied.

"I realize this, son. I am not in any way trying to discourage you from
going out with Doctor Pellphrey. I just want you to be sure about what you
are doing. Just take things slowly at first okay?" I asked.

"Michael and I have had lunch together several times and we talk a lot. He
is a good friend." Curtis replied.

"But you want more than a friendship with him don't you?" I asked.

"I would like to be his boyfriend, dad. But I don't know if that is what he
wants." Curtis responded.

"Well, like I said, just take it slow and let nature take its course. If you
and Michael decide to take things to the next level, I hope you will come
and talk with me about it first. I am always here for you, son. I want you
to be happy and feel loved."

"I am happy dad, and I do feel loved. I promise I will talk with you before
Michael and I do anything sexual." Curtis stated, as he wrapped his arm
around my waist. Just then, Kyle and his manager pulled up in front of the
house. We walked back to the house and everyone sat down for an early
dinner. As soon as dinner was over, James, Kyle, and the manager took off
for the Oasis theater while me and the other boys cleared the table. It was
almost time to leave for the theater when I head another quad pull up
outside.

The doorbell rang and I answered it. Michael had come to give Curtis a ride
to the theater. Curtis looked up at me and I nodded my approval. We all
walked out to our quads and headed for the theater. It took us a while to
locate enough parking spaces as there was a good size crowd there already.
With boys, staff, and customers, I was hoping for a full house. The ushers
handed us each a program as we entered the theater. My group walked up to
the second floor, to enter my VIP box. The private box seated twelve which
was ample for my little group. Kyle and his manager would join us there
after Kyle finished his concert.

James had told me very little about the casting of his play. I browsed the
program and was shocked to learn that Petre Constinescu was playing the part
of Oliver. I had assumed that James would include many of the Romanian boys
in the production, but I never dreamed he would have one of them in the lead
role. I noticed that Brian was playing the part of Mr. Bumble and David
Nicholson was playing the part of Fagin. It was going to be a very
entertaining evening.

At 7:00pm sharp, James walked out on the stage to begin the show. "Good
evening, and welcome to the Oasis Theater. We have some great entertainment
in store for you this evening. But before we start the show, I would like to
take a minute to thank each of you for coming out tonight in support of such
a worthy cause. Charles Dickens was one of the greatest writers of all
times. His poignant tales of old world misery and suffering were meant to
stir the soul in each of us. While the tale of young Oliver Twist is told
with music and mirth, it is a tragic tale none the less."

James stared up at me in my box before continuing. "My heart's desire this
evening is that you will each walk away from this theater with a better
understanding of the realities in our world. While Dickens' tales are set in
a time long ago, the harsh realities described in his writing are just as
real today. I recently had the opportunity to visit the country of Romania.
I saw, first hand, that such suffering still exists in our world. It is up
to each of us individually to decide how best to help someone in need. But
it is up to all of us collectively to insure that no human life is cheapened
or forgotten."

"Your contribution tonight will go a long way towards helping boys who are
suffering great need in Romania. But please don't let it end there. Whether
it is the street children of Romania, the starving children in Africa, or
the rejected children of America, you can, and you must, make a difference.
There is an age old question that remains as valid today as it was in days
of old. Am I my brother's keeper? Search your heart, and I believe you will
find the answer to be 'Yes'. Enjoy the show and thank you again for your
support." James concluded.

My heart was filled with pride as tears rolled down my face. James walked
off the stage and Kyle walked out to start the show. The music started
playing, and Kyle let loose with a very moving song to open his performance.
"All the colors of the rainbow. All the voices of the wind. Every dream that
reaches out. That reaches out to find where love begins. Every word of every
story. Every star in every sky. Every corner of creation lives to testify."

"For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love. I'll be a witness in
the silences when words are not enough. With every breath I take, I'll give
thanks to God above. For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love.
>From the mountains to the valleys. From the rivers to the sea. Every hand
that reaches out. Every hand that reaches out to offer peace. Every simple
act of mercy. Every step to kingdom come. All the hope in every heart will
speak what love has done."

"For as long as I shall live. I will testify to love. I'll be a witness in
the silences when words are not enough. With every breath I take, I'll give
thanks to God above. For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love."
Kyle sang out with his usually fire and energy. Kyle put on an hour long
show and had the crowd dancing in the isles. The boy made me tired just
watching him bounce around the stage.

There was a small intermission after Kyle's performance. Kyle and his
manager joined us in my VIP box and I complimented him on another
outstanding show. The play started and the boys all looked great in their
costumes. The Production Team did a fabulous job on the set as well. Kyle
and I chatted a lot during the first few scenes of the play. I was trying to
pay attention to the stage but Kyle seemed to have little interest in what
was happening to Oliver and his band of orphans.

The fight between Oliver and the older boy at the funeral parlor had just
occurred. Now young Oliver was locked in a cold damp cellar filled with
empty coffins. Petre was doing a very good job with the role of Oliver. It
was difficult to tell if his tears were manufactured, or real, as he began
to sing.

"Where is love? Does it fall from skies above? Is it underneath the willow
tree, that I've been dream of? Where is she? Who I close my eyes to see?
Will I ever know the sweet "hello" that's only meant for me? Who can say
where she may hide? Must I travel far and wide? 'Til I am bedside the
someone who I can mean something to. Where? Where is love? Who can say where
she may hide? Must I travel far and wide? 'Til I am beside the someone who I
can mean something to. Where? Where is love?" Petre sang.

Kyle had stopped speaking in mid sentence and his eyes were riveted on
Petre. I noticed a few tears escape Kyle's eyes as he sat staring at this
beautiful little Romanian boy. "Are you alright Kyle?" I asked.

"I'm fine Tim. Who is that angel singing?" Kyle asked.

"That is Petre. He is one of our Romanian boys. A pretty sad case actually.
He is one of the boys who was captured and tortured by the police for being
gay." I replied.

"Who could torture such an innocent and beautiful creature like that?" Kyle
asked, as a few more tears trickled down his cheek.

"Would you like to meet him?" I asked with a smile?

"I sure would, Tim." Kyle responded.

"I will introduce you to him after the show." I said. For the rest for the
play, I did not have any trouble concentrating. Kyle did not speak another
word because he was so engrossed in the story being played out on the stage.
David was a big ham and he played up the part of Fagin big time. David even
showed off some pretty sharp dance moves during his singing of "Be Back
Soon".

Seeing Jonathan Talbet and Gregory Cardova wearing dresses was priceless.
They were playing the roles of Nancy and Bet. Cory played the part of Jack
Dawkins (The Artful Dodger). I thought this was a particularly good casting
job because Cory was indeed very street wise and clever. Oliver had been
taken in by Mr. Brownlow and given a new home. Neither Brownlow or Oliver
knew that Oliver was Brownlow's great nephew at this point in the play.
Oliver had just woken up after his first night of safety in the Brownlow
house.

"Who will buy this wonderful morning? Such a sky, you never did see! Who
will tie it up with a ribbon, and put it in a box for me? So I could see it
at my leisure, whenever things go wrong. And I would keep it as a treasure,
to last my whole life long. Who will buy this wonderful feeling? I'm so
high, I swear I could fly. Me, oh my, I don't want to lose it. So what am I
to do, to keep the sky so blue? There must be someone who will buy."

"There'll never be a day so sunny. It could not happen twice. Where is the
man with all the money? It's cheap at half the price! Who will buy this
wonderful feeling? I'm so high
I swear I could fly. Me, oh my, I don't want to lose it. So what am I to do,
to keep the sky so blue? There must be someone who will buy." Petre sang,
with his angelic voice. His voice coach had done an excellent job with him.
There was hardly any hint of Romanian accent in his singing.

The audience gave a standing ovation after Petre finished singing. It was an
incredibly moving performance. Both Kyle and I had tears running down our
faces after listening to this Romanian cherub sing his heart out. When the
play reached the reprisal section near the end, I noticed Kyle still staring
at Petre and I caught him singing aloud.

"I'd risk everything, for one kiss, everything. Yes, I'd do anything,
anything for you!" Kyle sang. Curtis looked over at Kyle and then looked up
at me and gave me a wink. Apparently I was not the only one to notice that
young Kyle was smitten. When the play finally concluded, I sent Curtis down
to ask Petre to join us in my box. A few minutes later, James showed up and
I gave him a very big hug and a passionate kiss.

"Your play was a big hit, James. I am proud of you for putting together such
a spectacular evening." I stated.

"Thank you, my love. The boys did a great job didn't they?" he asked.

"They were magnificent James. No question about that." I replied. Kyle
complimented James on the play as well and the two of them chatted for a few
minutes. It wasn't long before Curtis arrived with Petre in tow.

"Outstanding performance Petre. You were perfect in every way tonight, son."
I said as I hugged him and kissed his forehead.

Thank you, Tim." he replied. "Had lots of fun."

"Petre, I would like to introduce you to Kyle Underwood. Kyle, this is Petre
Constinescu." I said, introducing the two boys.

"I honored meet you Mr. Underwood." Petre replied.

"No Petre. I am the one who is honored. Your performance tonight was
flawless and you have the voice of an angel." Kyle stated. "You are an
extremely talented actor. And please call me Kyle."

"Thank you Kyle. You very nice to say that." Petre responded.

"Would you like to go an have some pizza with me at the pizzeria?" Kyle
asked.

"Sound like fun. I would like that much." Petre stated. The two boys said
their goodbyes to everyone and headed off to the pizzeria.

Kyle's manager headed back to their apartment and I told Curtis, Cory and
Timmy to meet me down by the main entrance to the theater. "Have a seat
Michael. I would like to talk to you for a minute." I said, before sitting
down.

"What would you like to talk about Tim?" Michael asked nervously.

"I just want to make sure we understand each other where Curtis is
concerned. He is very fond of you Michael. He is hoping to have more than a
friendship with you. I am not going to discuss Curtis' sex life with you
Michael. That is between you and him. But I am going to ask you to go slow
with him. He is not like the other boys on the island. He has never lived on
the street and he has led a somewhat sheltered life." I stated.

"I am very fond of him too, Tim. I have never had a serious boyfriend before
and I have very limited experience in the area of sex. I have not asked him
to be my boyfriend yet because I am a little scared and confused. I have
never felt the way I feel about Curtis towards anyone else. I can promise
you we will go slow. This is as new to me as it is for him. I can assure you
that I have no intentions of hurting him in any way. I adore him, and would
never cause him any pain." Michael answered.

"I am all for a relationship between the two of you. As long as that is what
you both want. But don't you ever hurt him Michael. He is my son, and I
could not bare to see him get hurt. If you are not looking for a long term
relationship, I would just as soon you look somewhere else for
companionship." I explained.

"I have nothing but the best intentions, Tim. I am not interested in a quick
fling. I think Curtis and I could have a very good relationship. I don't
believe in promiscuity, so you need not worry about that." Michael said in a
very serious tone.

"Then I wish the two of you all the best. Be good to him Michael. He
deserves nothing less." I said, as I shook Michael's hand. We walked out of
the theater and met up with the rest of my group. Curtis and Michael went
for a walk on the beach and the rest of my group headed for home. When we
reached the house, everyone got settled in for the night. Curtis arrived
home and hour later so I locked up the house for the night.

Curtis and I had another little talk about his blossoming relationship and I
felt very comfortable with the situation. Curtis was a good boy and I
trusted him to come and talk with me if any problems arose or he just needed
advice. I tucked Curtis into bed for the night and then headed for the
master bedroom. James and I chatted for about a half an hour before we
decided to call it a day. We shared a loving kiss and wished each other a
pleasant night. We were both sound asleep within minutes.

The next few days went very smoothly, and James had managed to raise over
one point five million dollars for the kids in Romania. He planned to start
a half-way house there to get as many of those kids off the streets as he
could. Vasile contacted his former staff and got them onboard with the
half-way house idea. As the end of Kyle's stay on the island drew near, Kyle
called me and asked to speak with me. We agreed to meet at Paradise del
Ragazzo for lunch.

I arrived at Paradise del Ragazzo and Kyle was waiting for me by the
entrance. I found it interesting that his manager was not with him. We
walked inside, and were shown to our table. Once the food was ordered and we
had our drinks, I asked Kyle what he wanted to speak with me about.

"Things have been pretty crazy in my life, Tim. I have been performing since
I was barely nine years old. My parents used to push me real hard because
they wanted me to be rich and famous. When I turned eleven, my parents
caught me in bed with a boy while I was on the road. They were quick to tell
me how disappointed they were in me for choosing to be gay. I tried to
explain to them that I had not chosen anything. That I was gay because that
is the way I was born. But they would not listen to me." Kyle stated.

"They told me that they were going to hire someone to take care of me while
I was on the road. They wanted nothing else to do with me as far as being
their son was concerned. Of course the money was no problem for them to
accept. They hired Freddy to be my 'gay nanny' as they called him. They told
me that they did not care what I did and who I did it with. As long as I
stayed away from them and kept them comfortable with the money I sent home."
Kyle continued to explain. I guess even rich and famous people are not
exempt from homophobic parents.

'Freddy is your manager?" I asked.

"Yes. At least he was." Kyle responded.

"He was?" I asked curiously.

"Yeah. I fired him this morning. I called my parents and told them I was
going to fire him and live on my own. We reached an agreement on a cash
payment which I made through your bank this morning. In exchange for one
million dollars each, they would leave me alone and allow me to live my life
as I see fit. I told them I was going to live in Europe and they said they
did not care where I lived. As long as I never bothered them again." Kyle
said, with tear in his eye.

"I have managed to save up quite a bit of money and I have enough to live
very comfortably for the rest of my life. I have one more year of school to
finish before I get my high school diploma. Then I think I would like to go
to college. I had planned on firing Freddy at the end of the year, but
something happened this week and Freddy was becoming a huge pain in the ass.
So I fired him today." Kyle informed me.

"What has happened this week Kyle?" I asked.

"I have fallen in love. I have never believed in love at first sight, but
now I have experienced it. When I saw Petre last Tuesday night, I fell madly
in love with him. The last seven days we have spent together has only
confirmed my feelings. It is almost time for me to leave Jason's Haven, and
I can't bare the thought of leaving Petre." Kyle stated through tears.

"How does Petre feel about all of this?" I asked.

"He loves me too. He said he did not want me to go. So I have come to ask a
favor of you. Can I stay and live here on Jason's Haven?" Kyle asked. "I
will still be making records and doing the occasional concert. But I want to
live here instead of back in the States."

"I am afraid that only boys in our program, employees, and employee's
relatives can live on the island Kyle." I responded.

"Can you give me a job then?" he asked, almost pleading. "I am willing to do
anything, as long as I can stay with my Petre."

"Are you sure this is what you want Kyle? I mean, you live a star's life of
glitz and glamour. You are willing to give all of that up just so you can
stay with Petre?" I asked.

"I love him, Tim." he said. "I love him more than anything in the world and
I can't leave him. I can't live without him, Tim."

"Well, I will have to clear it with the executive staff but I suppose we
could hire you as Director of Entertainment. It only pays one hundred and
fifty thousand dollars a year." I explained.

"I don't care about the money, Tim. As long as I can stay together with
Petre." he insisted.

"You will have to follow all of the island rules, and you should realize
that Petre is a citizen of Romania. He can not legally travel to the United
States of America." I replied.

"I promise I will follow all of the island's rules. As far as Petre's
citizenship, I know someone who can fix that for me. So are you saying I can
stay?" he asked hopefully.

"Providing the executive staff approves of your being hired, yes you can
stay. What about your manager?" I asked.

"He is packing his things now. He will be ready to go leave the island
tomorrow morning. I will pay for his flight off the island." Kyle replied.

"Call Petre and have him come over here." I instructed. Kyle walked up to
the reception desk and called Petre. Then he returned to the table and took
his seat. Within five minutes, Petre was being escorted to our table by a
waiter. Once Petre was seated, I asked him if he wanted Kyle to stay on the
island so that they could live together.

"Want that very much, Tim." Petre stated softy. "Love Kyle very much."

I walked up to the desk and called Allen. He rapidly arranged a conference
call and, within a few minutes, the executive staff had voted to hire Kyle
as Director of Entertainment. I thanked the executive staff and then walked
back to the table. "Congratulations Kyle, and welcome to the family." I said
with a broad smile.
