Chapter Forty Five

Curtis started filling Yuri in on our school while we waited for Michael to
join us. I was quick to remind Yuri that he would have to begin classes
tomorrow per our agreement. Even though he was an employee, he was still
mandated to finish his schooling. Jim was very supportive of the
requirement so I felt certain their would be no problems.

"Did you have any trouble separating from you old job Jim?" I asked.

"None at all. They ask a few questions but most of them knew I was
suffering from burn out so it was not difficult at all." he replied.

"You did not answer any questions about where you were going did you?" I
asked with concern.

"Of course not Tim. The last thing I want to do is bring heat on your
wonderful work out here on Jason's Haven." he assured me.

While we were speaking, Michael walked up and joined us. We all exchanged
pleasantries and then ordered our lunch. Michael and I played odds and
evens to see who would pay for the lunch bill and Michael lost. We engaged
in all sorts of small talk over lunch and then I explained to Michael that
I had shown our new employees the business side of the island. After lunch
I would be showing them the fun side of the island.

"There is more to see?" Yuri asked with a big smile.

"Much more son. You will see it soon enough. Now finish your lunch so we
can finish the tour." I replied'

"Where are boys?" Yuri enquired.

"They are just getting out of school. Some go straight to their chores and
others go over to the customer side of the island where all the fun stuff
is. You will see them in a few minutes." I replied

"How many boys here?" Yuri asked.

"Counting the ones on the ship, eight hundred of them." I replied with a
chuckle.

"That lot of naked boys." he assessed.

"You may have your hands full Jim." I chided.

"Afraid not Tim. Yuri is all mine. No questions asked." He replied.

"Yuri only have sex with Jim" Yuri insisted.

"Then you two will be very happy here. No one will try to make you do
something you don't want to do. The whole reason for making you wear that
device is to show that the rules apply to everyone. You have no worries
here son." I assured him. "If everyone is finished with lunch we should
continue our tour." Once everyone had their fill we headed out to the
quads. We paired off as before and were on our way.

Our first stop was at the bank so that our new employees could get familiar
with how finances work on the island. Then we drove them over to the
Administration building and introduced them to everyone. Here we also got
Jim assigned his quad which is green in color. A symbol of his emergency
services status. It is rigged with emergency lights and a siren. A second
one would be ready for Yuri when he was ready to go full time. If Jim
needed to make an air run, he would be given a voucher so he could replace
his gasoline. Otherwise he was responsible for his own fuel consumption.

I pointed out the gas station to them as we drove by. I also pointed out
the two baseball diamonds across the street. We then drove around by the
pizza parlor and the massage parlor. As we drove on, we passed the tennis
courts and basketball courts before I showed them the four Olympic sized
swimming pools. I also showed them the mini-cart raceway that James had
added. We swung around and traveled through all of the customer cabana
areas so that both Jim and Yuri could get used to the numbering system.

Our final stops were the bowling alley and the beach. Yuri was grinning
from ear to ear after seeing everything we had on the island. I could only
imagine what a trip on our cruise ship would do for him. Yuri and Curtis
took off down the beach so Jim and I slipped into the bowling alley for a
drink We walked up to the counter and ordered two sodas. I told Jim to go
ahead and try out his bracelet to see that it worked. He held his arm out
to the waiter and he scanned the id. "Thank you sir" was all he said.

"That was easy enough now wasn't it? " I asked.

"Sure was. You guys have it all figured out here." Jim replied.

"Jim, I am extremely happy to have you on our team and you will be
providing a critical service for the major expansions we have going on. I
just want to be clear about what is expected of you. Given your history in
law enforcement, you may be tempted to act in that role from time to
time. This is something you must resist at all costs. I have a thoroughly
trained security staff and I leave the enforcement work to them. Your
duties are purely medivac, search and rescue. That won't be a problem will
it?" I asked.

"I understand your concerns but as I told you back in Miami, I am burned
out on being a policeman. So I will have no trouble staying within my
role." Jim replied.

We finished our little chat and then went outside to look for the
boys. They were nowhere in sight so we just sat by the quads and
waited. "You know, the scenery is quite nice here Tim." Jim said with a
broad smile.

"Yes it is. It is truly paradise." I replied. "The ship will be in port
tomorrow and the scenery will double."

The boys finally made it back so we decided to finish up our tour. We made
a stop at the commissary to show the guys where to buy what they
needed. Then we slipped over to the Theater so they would know where
special events and special meetings are held. "I need to head back to my
office to tend to some business. Curtis can answer any questions you may
have or you can always call myself or Michael." I stated.

"Thanks for the tour and thanks for having us on your team. I think that
this is just what Yuri and I needed." Jim replied.

"Glad to have you both!" I exclaimed before starting my quad and heading
toward the house. By the time I reached the house James was waiting for me
on the front porch.. "Hello my angel."

"Allen is on the phone wanting to set up the expansion meetings from Angels
cove. I climbed off my quad and took the phone. "What's up Allen?" I asked.

"Everyone wants to start the meeting tomorrow afternoon when school lets
out." he advised.

"Ok, have everyone gather in the board room at 1pm tomorrow and we will get
things moving. It might be a good idea for Michael to invite Jim to
attend. I want to see everyone's impact assessments so we can hit the
ground running."

"Ill take care of it Tim." he replied before hanging up the phone.

"James, do we have enough boys signed up for rotation duty on Maggie's
Legacy when she comes online?" I asked.

"Yes. I have a list of names on my desk upstairs. All we need is the other
half of the rotation which the upcoming recovery missions will handle." he
replied, beaming with pride.

"How are you handling sleeping space since we only have five hundred boys
on the island and three hundred are needed for the other ship's rotation?"
I asked.

"Many of the boys really like it on the ship so we are staggering their
shifts which will give them two months on Caribbean Angels, two months on
Jason's Haven, and two months on Maggie's Legacy. We can go back to normal
rotations when Angels Cove is fully functional." he replied.

"You don't think that is asking to much of the boys?" I queried.

"Everyone wants to make this work Tim. They will be ok." he answered.

"Okay angel boy. When it comes to the cruise line business I trust you
completely. Just let me know if there is anything I can do to help." I said
supportively. "We should have Curtis join us for the planning meeting
tomorrow. I would like to get Curtis more involved."

I had no more than finished my sentence when Curtis walked up. "Get me more
involved in what?" he asked.

"Getting you more involved in the day to day business of Jason's Haven and
Paradise Cruise Lines." I replied.

"Cool! I would really like to help out more and learn more about the
business." he exclaimed.

After a little small talk, Curtis went to his room to do his homework and
James went to his office to get some work done. I needed to get some work
done myself but I had a headache so I went out on the patio and asked Cory
to bring me a soda and some aspirin. It only took Cory a minute to retrieve
the aspirin so I took them and laid back in my lounge chair. I must have
drifted off because the next thing I knew I was being awakened for
dinner. I did not realize I was so tired.

The boys came down and we all sat and had a very pleasant
dinner. Afterwards, we all just lounged around the patio feeling very
relaxed and content, "Dad, I was talking with James about the rotation
problem with the boys once the new ship comes on line." Curtis stated.

"Did you have anything valuable to add that may solve the problem?" I
asked.

"I think so. We currently have five hundred dorm rooms available but we
need nearly double that since some of our boys are not old enough for ship
duty. It seems to me that we could take each dorm room and make it a double
occupancy by placing bunk beds in the rooms. That would not only solve the
rotation problem but would add more space to help more boys. The boys who
have relationships formed already could choose to move in togther, the
remainder of the rooms would be useable." he replied. "Of course this would
men doing a little more recovery work.

'How do you feel about this suggestion James?" I asked

"I think it is a great idea. The only two questions are how fast can we
convert the single rooms to doubles and how can we expand the school to
handle the new students. It would be something we would have to discuss
with billeting and education tomorrow during the planning meeting." He
replied. In the meantime, Cory and Timmy set a lovely table and served up
meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, and green beans. Soft drinks were
placed at everyone's seat and we all sat down for a quiet evening meal.

After the meal we all just lounged around on the deck. As I was relaxing,
it came to me that we would need to hire two more master chefs to handle
the new ship. So much work to be done and so little time to do it all
in. The pressure was already mounting and I could feel it taking it's toll
on me. But the problem of homeless gay youth was not standing still so we
could not afford to do so either. We spent the rest of the evening relaxing
and then we all decided to turn in early. Tomorrow would be a very busy
day,

We got everyone into their bedrooms and passed out goodnight kisses before
James and I retired to our room. We climbed in the bed and gave each other
a goodnight kiss and hugged each other tight. James rolled over and looked
at me before speaking. "You are getting your headaches again aren't you?"
he asked sadly.

"I have had a few angel but they are not to bad. If it gets serious, I will
see the doctor about them. Don't you worry, I am going to be just fine." I
promised with a sweet smile.

"Please don't let them get to bad Tim. I could not live without you." He
said with tears in his eyes.

"You have nothing to worry about angel. I will be around for a very long
time." I stated in an assuring tone as I wiped away his tears. "Now lets
just get some sleep. We have lots of work to do tomorrow." I added. I
snuggled up against my lover and we both drifted off to sleep.

I woke up at 8:40am with the sun once again shinning in my eyes. The boys
were all gone off to school so I slouched my way to the bathroom to prepare
for the day. When I finished my business in the bathroom I made my way down
to the kitchen and poured a bowl of cereal for breakfast. I sat on the
patio and ate my breakfast while watching the customers and boys walking
into the dinning facility. When I finished my breakfast I took my bowl
inside and placed it in the sink. I picked up the phone and gave Michael a
call.

"Infirmary, Michael speaking." Came the answer over the phone.

"Michael, this is Tim. Do you think you could squeeze me in this morning?"
I requested.

"Sure thing Tim. What did you want to talk about?" he asked.

"This isn't about business Michael. I have been having some severe
headaches and I think I need to be checked out." I explained.

"Well I am available right now so you should come right over." he insisted.

"Under one condition." I demanded.

"What would that be?" he asked.

"That you and I are the only ones that know anything about this." I
insisted.

"No problem Tim. Just come on over and we can see what is happening."
Michael replied.

I hung up the telephone and headed for my quad. A short drive later I was
at the infirmary and Michael was waiting for me. He led me back to an exam
room and sat me down. "Now tell me what sort of problems you have been
having." he asked.

"For many years now I have had moderate to severe headaches now and
then. Not very often. But lately, the headaches are coming more often and
they are stronger." I answered.

"How is your blood pressure normally?" Michael asked.

"I don't know. I never have checked it. I have always been very healthy." I
said.

"Well let's check it out and see." Michael stated. He placed a blood
pressure cuff around my arm and started inflating it. Then he slowly let
the air out while listening through his stethoscope. He repeated the
process in the other arm to make sure his reading was correct. "It looks
like we have a problem to deal with Tim." He concluded.

"What kind of problem are we talking about here?" I asked with concern.

"Your blood pressure is 145 over 94 which is in the very high range. Unless
we can find a way to get this under control, you will remain at risk for a
heart attack or stroke." Michael explained.

"Well, you are just full of good news this morning." I chided.

"This is probably what is causing your headaches as well. We will need to
run some more tests to be certain." Michael added.

"What kind of tests are we talking about?" I asked.

"A CT Scan of your brain and an Ultra Sound of your arteries for
starters. This will give us a good picture of what we are looking at." he
concluded.

"So lets do it right now and get it over with." I stated rather
impatiently.

"It's not quite that simple Tim. We do not have the equipment for these
tests here on the island. You will need to fly back to Miami to have them
done. They can be done in a day so no hospital stay is required. I can make
the arrangements with you doctor back in Miami and get this done right
away." Michael explained.

"It will have to wait until we get the expansions rolling." I insisted.

"I am afraid that is not possible Tim. You said yourself that things are
getting worst. Every day we wait only ads to the risk of losing you. We
must get this taken care of right away." Michael pleaded. "And this is
certainly something that you should discuss with you family. They have a
right to know Tim."

"Very well, call Dr. McKinney and get everything set up for tomorrow
morning. I will talk to James and Curtis after the planning session and we
will fly out this evening." I surrendered.

I thanked Michael and walked away from the Infirmary feeling a ton of
emotions. If I got sick, what would happen to my family, what would happen
to the expansion, what would happen to all the boys who needed this
place. Everything was racing through my mind so fast I could hardly
think. Finally I calmed down enough to realize that I had only been told I
have dangerously high blood pressure. Lots of people have that condition
and find a way to get better. I was just going to have to make whatever
lifestyle changes were necessary to remove the problem.

The afternoon planning session went well and I was able to put my troubles
out of my head for awhile. The session lasted about three hours before
breaking up. Curtis and James both had plans for after the session and I
told them they would have to break those plans. I needed them back at the
house for a talk. Curtis was pretty disappointed but James sensed that
something was wrong so he did not complain at all. I told the boys to meet
me back at the house in twenty minutes. Then I headed off on my quad to the
airstrip. Once I reached the airstrip I alerted my crew that I would be
flying out to Miami within the hour with two three passengers.

I made my way back home and found Curtis and James waiting on the patio
when I got inside. I grabbed a soda for each of us and went to join them at
their table. "What's up dad? Why all the mystery?" Curtis asked with a
concerned face.

"Well, you both know I have been having a lot of headaches recently. I went
to see Michael today and he checked me out. It seems my blood pressure is
dangerously high so I have to go to Miami and have some tests run on me. I
want both of you with me in Miami. We will be leaving in one hour." I
stated

"What kind of tests?" Curtis asked in a panicky voice.

"I have to have a CT scan of my brain and an ultrasound on my arteries to
make sure there is nothing major wrong with me." I explained.

"They think you are going to have a stroke don't they?" James asked through
tear filled eyes.

"It is a possibility my angel. But that is why I am taking care of it now."
I tried to assure him.

James broke down into hysterics screaming "You can not leave me now. I can
not live without you."

"I don't have any intentions of leaving either of you. So lets just wait
and see what the test show ok?" I encouraged. "At any rate, go get your
stuff ready for Miami. Because we don't have much time."

To be continued . . .
