Chapter Forty Six

Our plane landed at 8:00pm and Marcus had the towncar waiting for us. "Good
evening Tim. Dr. McKinney is waiting for you at Memorial Hospital." Marcus
informed me.

"Very well, let's get there and get this thing over with." I replied. We
all piled into the towncar and headed down the interstate towards Memorial
Hospital. The drive took about twenty minutes before the towncar pulled up
in front of outpatient services at the hospital. We climbed out of the car
and saw Mihai and Franklin waiting for us.

"What are you guys doing here?" I asked.

"Where else would we be when our boss is having medical problems?" Mihai
responded.

"How did you find out about it?" I questioned.

"Michael called us as soon as you took off. What is going on Tim?" Franklin
pleaded.

"It is really nothing. I have been having some headaches and my blood
pressure is very high so Michael wants me to have a CT scan and ultrasound
of my arteries." I stated. "We better get inside because Dr. McKinney is
waiting for me."

Dr. McKinney got me all checked in and soon I was on a stretcher in the
x-ray department. The first person to work on me was the ultrasound
technician. She was nice and friendly as she went about her business. She
really did not explain to much as she waved a device slowly over both sides
of my neck. When she finished the test she explained that Dr. McKinney
would discuss the results with me after the CT scan was complete. I was
wheeled over to the CT scan room and introduced to yet another technician.

The scan technician was a man and he explained the entire procedure to me
as he inserted an IV line in my right arm. I was moved over to the scan
table and adjusted so that I was in proper alignment. "I am going to give
you a shot through your IV. It is called contrast and it helps the doctor
see all of your arteries. You will not feel any pain but your whole body
will feel very warm for a little while." the technician explained. The shot
was administered and seconds later I felt warmth flowing through my body.

The table I was on began to slide and I was moved inside a large machine
that looked like a giant doughnut. The machine started whirring and the
table I was on started to move about an inch at a time moving me through
the tunnel. The entire test lasted less than ten minutes and I was moved
from the scan table back onto my stretcher. I was moved into a small room
where James, Curtis, Mihai, and Franklin were waiting for me. James had
clearly been crying so I reached out and took his hand.

"Everything is going to be fine angel. Trust me." I said in a reassuring
tone.

"What did they find out?" James asked.

"I don't know James. The doctor will be in to talk to us when he sees the
results." I explained.

"Did it hurt?" Curtis asked.

"Not even a little bit son. Actually it was pretty boring." I chuckled

"How are you feeling Tim?" asked Dr. McKinney as he walked in the room.

"Feeling ready to get the heck outta here." I replied.

"Well, I am afraid that is going to have to wait for awhile. The good news
is that your CT Scan was clear. No tumors or aneurysms. However, your
Ultrasound was not so good. You have a ninety eight percent blockage of
your right carotid artery. Put simply, you are about a hamburger away from
having a stroke. So we need to do angioplasty to open that artery back up."
he explained.

"How long will that take doc?" I asked.

"The procedure itself will take less than an hour. But you will need to
stay with us here at the hospital for awhile. Then you will be on bed rest
at home for a few days. We will be starting you on some blood pressure
medication and you are certainly going to have to make some lifestyle
changes." he added.

"What kind of changes?" I asked with concern.

"Well, you will need to reduce the level of stress in your life and you
will need to make some dietary changes. You are also going to have to avoid
sexual activity for about a month. If you can manage all of that, you will
be good as new." he explained.

"When will you do the angioplasty?" I asked.

"The cath lab is available now so as soon as you sign the consent forms we
can get you prepped. We can have you home by tomorrow night. So what do you
say?" he asked.

"Can you give me a few minutes alone with James?" I asked.

"Ok everyone, let's leave them alone." doc instructed. Everyone left the
room and James and I were alone.

"So what do you think angel?" I asked.

"I think we don't have a choice. You need to have this done." he stated,
with tears in his eyes.

"Ok then. I will sign the forms and you and Curtis can go home with Mihai
and Franklin. I probably won't be awake again until morning anyway." I
stated.

"Are you out of your mind?" he exclaimed. "I will send Curtis with Mihai
and Franklin but I am not leaving."

"I love you angel. We have a lot of time left together so don't you be
worrying to much." I said softly.

James leaned over the stretcher and kissed me passionately. "I love you too
Tim. Don't you dare try leaving me." he said.

I reached up and wiped his tears away. I sent James to get the doctor and
we got all of the consent forms signed. Curtis reluctantly agreed to go
home with Mihai and Franklin. I was wheeled down to the cath lab and moved
onto the operating table. I was given another shot and within seconds
everything went black.

I woke up feeling very disoriented and struggling to get my wits about
me. I gazed around the hospital room and saw James sitting beside my bed. I
slowly started to remember being put to sleep and then waking only briefly
several times during the night.

"How are you feeling Tim?" James asked.

"A little groggy actually. How long have I been asleep?" I asked.

"You have been asleep since the angioplasty last night. Is your throat
sore?" he asked.

"A little bit but not to bad." I replied.

"I see you finally decided to wake up." Dr. McKinney jested as he walked
into the room. "How are you feeling this morning Tim?"

"Like I have a hangover." I quipped.

"Not to worry. Just some lingering effects of the anesthesia." he
replied. "I have great news for you Tim. The procedure went very well and
we managed to completely reopen your right carotid artery. The left side is
clear as well so you should not have any more problems with the headaches."

"How long before I can leave?" I asked.

"Everything looks real good. If your vital signs are still good when I make
my evening rounds then I see no reason to keep you any longer." he replied.

"Great. I will make arrangements to fly out tonight." I stated.

"I don't recommend you do any flying for at least three days Tim. You
should give your arteries some time to strengthen before you place yourself
in a pressurized environment. You really should stay in bed for a few days
and rest." he scolded.

"Don't worry doc, he will be in bed for three days if I have to tie him in
it." James said matter-of-factly. "Thanks for everything."

"Well, I see your in good hands so I will let you get some rest. See you
this evening." Doc stated before leaving the room.

"You know very well that I can not stay in bed for three days James." I
insisted.

"Do you love me Tim?" he asked in a stern voice.

"What kind of question is that angel? You know that I love you." I replied.

"Then you will follow the doctor's instructions and not give me any grief
in the process." he demanded.

"Yes Dear." I stated in a defeated tone.

James would not leave my side for the entire day. Curtis, Mihai, and
Franklin arrived just after breakfast and they stayed the entire day as
well. After a very long day and two of the worst meals of my life,
Dr. McKinney made his evening rounds and signed my release. I was given a
low sodium, low fat diet to follow and forced to ride in a wheelchair out
to Mihai's SUV. I don't know why they hand out those stupid diet
pamphlets. Nobody ever follows them anyway.

We loaded into the SUV and headed off to the residence. James was
practically sitting in my lap for the entire ride home. He was obviously
taking this whole thing much more seriously than I was. After all, the
damage was repaired and I was out of danger. Making a small adjustment to
my diet was not such a big deal. The real trick would be finding ways to
reduce the stress in my life.

When Mihai pulled up in front of the residence we all piled out of the SUV
and went inside. "Do you want me to stay with you guys tonight Tim?" Mihai
asked.

"I think we will be fine on our own. We will need you in the morning to fix
breakfast though." I replied.

"No problem Tim. I will be here bright and early." Mihai assured me. "If
you need us, you know you only need to call. We will be home in about forty
five minutes. We have to go to Franklin's mom's house to pick up Nicholas."

"Thank you both for taking care of Curtis and for staying with me today. It
meant a lot to me to have the people I love around me through all of this."
I stated.

"You guys sleep well tonight and I will see you in the morning." Mihai said
as he and Franklin headed out the door.

James and I headed up to the bedroom and James helped me get all settled
in. He kissed me goodnight and started to leave the room. "You are not
coming to bed with me Angel?" I asked curiously.

"I will come to be shortly Tim. I have some things I need to think
about. This is a lot to handle for me." he stated with a tear running down
his cheek.

"Are you certain you are ok Angel?" I asked with great concern.

"I am fine Tim. Honest I am. I just have to think this through and make
peace with it." he replied before turning and leaving the room. As he
closed the door my heart was very heavy. He had been through so much
already and now I was causing him more worries. I laid in bed worrying
about James for almost an hour before I finally drifted off to sleep.

I woke up with James' head laying on my chest. As I started to stir he
looked up at me and ask how I slept. "I slept fine Angel. I was worried
about you though. How are you this morning?" I asked.

"I am fine Tim. I told you I just needed to work some things out in my
mind. I think I have figured out a way to help you remove a great deal of
stress from your life." he replied.

"Oh really?" I asked. "And what might that solution be?"

"I know you probably don't think I am up for the challenge but..." James
began.

"Whoa!" I interrupted. "I have never doubted your abilities Angel boy! I
know you are capable of great things. I will always believe in you." I
assured him.

"Good. Then that makes this all the much easier to say. I want you to name
me Executive Director of Jason's Haven." he said matter-of-factly.

"What?" I exclaimed.

"You have to remove stress from your life Tim. If you don't you are going
to die and with you gone I may as well be dead too! I can not handle
loosing you my love. So I want to take over running Jason's Haven in
addition to the cruise line. You would still remain chairman of the board
and President of ESEI and still run all of the other subsidiaries. But the
stressful work of managing the Islands will fall to me. I know what I am
asking is huge but I assure you I am ready for this. I will not make you
disappointed in me." James pleaded.

"Wow! That is a lot for me to absorb Angel. I will need some time to think
about it. I appreciate your great concern for me but I am not at all
certain you are ready to shoulder that load. Let just think about it for
awhile before we come to any major decisions like that. Ok?" I asked.

"Ok Tim. But promise me you will give it real consideration?" he asked in
response.

"That much I can certainly promise you my Angel. I love you James and I am
so grateful to have a mate who cares so deeply for me." I replied.

We crawled out of bed and went to the bathroom to handle our morning
business. When we finished I started following James out the door to head
down for breakfast.

"And just where do you think you are going mister?" he asked.

"I am going down to have breakfast with my family." I replied.

"Your family can have breakfast just fine. You are getting back in that bed
and you will stay there. Are we in agreement?" he asked.

I knew it was futile to argue. "Ok my Angel. I will do it for you!" I said
with a wink.

I crawled back in bed and James headed downstairs. In a few minutes Curtis
came bounding into the room and jumped on the bed. How are you feeling
dad?" he asked in a very chipper tone.

"I am fine son. Just a little bored having to stay in bed like this." I
stated in a defeated tone.

"It is only three days dad. Don't make it sound like a jail sentence. You
will be up before you know it." he replied.

"I suppose." I grumbled.

I heard James call Curtis downstairs and a few minutes later they both
returned along with Mihai who was carrying a breakfast tray for me. James
and Curtis had their own in their hands. We sat together on the bed and had
breakfast as a family. The boys left after eating but there was someone in
the room with me for pretty much the whole day. The next two days were not
much different either. Just laying in bed resting. It did give me a great
deal of time to think, however.

Saturday morning finally arrived and it was time to get up and head back to
Jason's Haven. James had called and made all the flight arrangements so
there was nothing for me to do but get dressed and head for the
airport. Mihai wanted to drive us instead of us taking the town car so we
all piled in the SUV and headed off for the airport. We said our goodbyes
to Mihai, Franklin, and Nicholas before climbing onboard our jet.

About 30 minutes before we landed on Jason's Haven I looked at James and
said, "This seems very weird to me."

"What do you mean Tim?" he asked.

"This is the first time I have ever flown to Jason's Haven as a resident
instead of being its Executive Director." I said with a broad smile.

"You mean it Tim?" James asked excitedly. "You are really resigning as
Executive Director?"

"As soon as we land we will gather the executive committee and make it all
official. But as of this morning, it is your baby now. I know you will make
me proud. Never forget the lives that are counting on you James. It is an
awesome responsibility but one I know you will measure up to." I said
confidently.

"I won't let you down Tim!" James exclaimed.

"You never have my Angel. You never have." I replied before kissing him
passionately.
