Chapter Nine

I quickly called the airstrip and had the ground crew prepare the jet for a
flight to Miami. I called Allen as well and told him to come right over. I
placed a final call to security and ask them to locate James down by the
volleyball courts on the beach and have him come home right away. I yelled
for Phillip and he came running into the office. "What's wrong Tim?" he
asked as he flew through the door. I told him to have a seat and I would
explain everything when Allen and James arrived.

A few minutes later the front door flew open and James yelled out "I'm home.
What's the matter?"

"Back in the office James!" I called out to him. James came in the office
and I had him take a seat and wait for Allen to arrive so I only had to
explain the situation once. A couple of minutes later, the doorbell rang and
I sent Phillip to answer it. Phillip walked Allen back into the office and
they both took a seat. "Sorry to worry you all but a situation has come up
in Miami that requires my immediate and personal attention. I will be flying
out to Miami within the hour."

I explained the whole situation the everyone and asked James if he would be
okay here with Phillip by himself. He assured me he would be fine so I ask
Allen if he would look in on the two of them once in a while to make sure
there were no problems. He said he would take care of everything. I sent
Allen off to handle all of the fine details for me and then I started to
head upstairs to pack a bag.

"Tim, can I speak to you alone for a moment?" Phillip asked before I walked
out of the office.

"Sure Phillip. James, would you wait for me upstairs please?" I asked.

"No problem Tim." he replied as he walked out of the office and closed the
door behind him.

"Tim, do you remember me telling you about my older brother dying when I was
ten?" he asked.

"Yes Phillip, I remember you mentioning it." I replied.

"Well, he died from a crack overdose. I would really like to go with you to
Miami and help convince Nathan to come back with us." he pleaded.

"I appreciate your feelings on this Phillip but I am afraid that is out of
the question. You know the rules about boys leaving the island." I reminded
him.

"Yes, but this is a 'medical emergency'." he replied.

"I understand that Phillip. But it is not 'your' medical emergency." I
stated. "I tell you what, if Nathan returns with me I will let the infirmary
know that you will be helping look after him if you like." I compromised.

"I appreciate that Tim. I wish you would let me go with you though." he
again pleaded.

"Not a chance Phillip. Your are to important to me to lose over a rules
violation." I replied.

"Okay. But when you talk with Nathan, don't take no for an answer." he said
while standing up to leave.

"I'll do my best to convince him Phillip." I promised as I walked out of the
office with him. I walked upstairs and found James packing my personal items
in a bag for me. I told James how sweet he was and how much I was going to
miss him. I promised him I would return as quickly as I could. I was not
exactly sure what the situation in Miami was going to be so I really did not
know how long I would be gone. I spent some time holding James in my arms
and kissing him. It was killing me to have to leave him for the first time
since we had been together.

James walked with me out to my quad and placed my bag in the carrier. I gave
him a very passionate kiss before I climbed on the quad. "Take care of
yourself my angel. I promise I will make up for being away from you when I
return." I said before pulling out and heading for the airstrip. I parked
the quad outside the terminal building and headed to the changing room to
dress. Allen had my travel clothes hanging in the room waiting for me. I got
dressed and then walked onboard the plane.

Three hours and forty five minutes later I was on the ground in Miami.
Marcus had the car waiting for me and I instructed him to drive out to the
recovery specialist's address. The drive seemed to take forever but we
finally arrived at William's house. Marcus waited in the car as I walked up
and rang the doorbell. "Hello Tim! It's good to see you again but I wish it
were under better circumstances." William said when he opened the door.

"It's good to see you again as well. How is the boy doing?" I asked.

"He is resting in the guestroom down the hall there. But I warn you, it's
not pretty in there." he stated. "The doctor has the boy pretty well sedated
because of his injuries and his withdrawal pains."

I walked back to the guestroom and opened the door. I was shocked to see the
boy restrained in the bed with horrible bruises all over his face. His right
eye was swollen completely closed and he had a number of cuts on his face.
Doctor McKinney was standing beside the bed and writing in a chart. "How bad
is he hurt Doctor?" I asked.

"Well, it looks much worst than it really is. The boy is no immediate danger
but he is in a lot of pain. He was struck hard in his testicles and they are
very swollen and discolored. He has three fractured ribs, a mild concussion,
and numerous cuts and contusions on his face as you can see. He also has
some cuts and tears in his sphincter muscle from what appears to have been a
very brutal anal assault. But our biggest problem right now is his drug
withdrawal. That is hindering his body's ability to heal. He is coherent but
I am keeping him sedated to ease his pain." the doctor explained.

"Is he able to hold a conversation?" I asked.

"His speech will be slurred a bit but he is able to talk coherently." he
replied.

"Thank you doctor. I assure you I will cover his medical expenses. Can you
give us a few minutes alone?" I asked.

"Sure Tim. But not to long okay?" he asked.

"Okay." I replied as he left the room and closed the door behind him. I
walked over and took a seat next to the bed and held Nathan's hand. "Nathan,
it's me Tim Stevens. I was told you wanted to speak with me." I stated
softly.

He began to speak and he was a little hard to understand but I managed to
make out what he was saying. "Thank you for coming so quickly sir. I messed
up pretty bad and I did not know who else to turn to." he said with tears
streaming down his face.

"It's alright son. Take it easy. No one will hurt you now. Just tell me what
happened to you." I said while I stroked his hand.

"I was out of money and I needed a fix really bad so I went to my dealer's
house and told him I would do anything if he would just spot me a few rocks
of crack. He had some friends over and we all got high together. Afterwards
he and his friends grabbed me and tied my hands behind my back with a pair
of flex-cuffs. They tore off my shirt and cut my pants off of me with a
knife before bending me over the coffee table. My dealer growled out 'time
to pay the bill fag boy' and then they all took turns raping me." he
explained as the tears continued to flow down his cheeks.

I took out my handkerchief and wiped his tears away before he continued.
"All five of them screwed my ass and then they each made me suck them off.
When they were finished with me they took a beer bottle and shoved it all
the way into my ass. They drug me out to the car and drove me down by the
pier. They dumped me out of the car and then they kicked the shit out of my
chest, face, and balls. Why did they do that to me sir? Why are people so
mean?" he asked through his sobs.

"Some times this world is not a very nice place Nathan. Too many people are
filled with hatred and bigotry towards gays and they would rather kill them
than try to understand them. So how did you end up here?" I asked as I dried
his tears again.

"The dealer and his friends left me for dead and took off in the car. One of
the dock workers was just getting off work and found me laying on the
ground. He cut the flex-cuffs off my hands and helped me get the bottle out
of my ass. The bottle must have been broken because I was cut and bleeding
some from my ass. The worker wanted to drive me to the hospital but I begged
him not to. I asked him to drive me home and I gave him this address. He
dropped me off out front and I banged on the door until Mr. Messer answered.
That's all I remember." he informed me.

"Well Nathan, although you may not feel like it, you are a pretty lucky
young man. You could have been killed you know?" I asked.

"Yes sir. I know that. That is why I asked to speak with you. Will you help
me get dried out? I don't want to live like this anymore. Is your offer
still open to go to that island?" he asked.

"Yes son. The offer is still open to go to Jason's Haven and yes I will help
you dry out. You are going to go through hell for awhile and you will
probably wish you were dead. But I promise you that me and my staff will be
there every second to help you get through this. Once we get you clean, the
problem will be very easy to manage. We simply do not have any illegal drugs
on the island so there will be no temptation for you. So I am willing to
commit every resource I have to help you, but you must be willing to help
yourself. Do we have an agreement?" I asked.

"I will try with everything I have in me sir. Thank you for giving me a
second chance." he cried.

"You just rest now son. I will see to everything." I said as I gently rubbed
his forehead. He drifted off the sleep and I walked out of the room.
"Doctor, I would like to move the boy to my residence out in the suburbs.
Can you come and stay with us while you continue to care for him." I asked.

"It is not a problem to come and stay with you Tim, but I don't think the
boy can travel by car. You will have to hire an ambulance service to
transport him there." he replied.

"Very well then. William, will you make the arrangements to have him moved
this afternoon?" I asked.

"I will see to it right away Tim. I have a good friend at Metro-care and he
will not ask too many questions." William replied.

"Thanks for all of your help William. I will see that you are well
compensated for putting the boy up in your home. Doctor, thank you for
caring for the boy. I will see you later at my residence." I said as I
walked out to the car. I picked up the cell phone and called Mihai. I told
him what was going on and instructed him to prepare guestroom one for Nathan
and the Doctor. When I finished the call I instructed Marcus to stop at a
florist shop and then drive me to the cemetery.

It took a while to get to the cemetery and I told Marcus to stay put as I
got out of the car. I walked over to the grave and placed a single rose on
the base of the headstone. "Hello my love." I said with tears streaming down
my face. "I was not planning on being back in the States so soon but hatred
and bigotry have reared their ugly heads once again. I am heartbroken that
no matter how much good we try to do, the bad guys seem to be winning. I
wonder if this insanity will ever end or are we simply doomed to self
destruct?"

I dried my eyes and continued. "I miss you Jason and I still think of you
every day. I am involved in a relationship with a wonderful boy now and I
love him very much. I think you would like him Jason. I hope you and my dad
are looking after each other. Let him know that I miss him very much and I
try to make him proud of me every day. Tell him I am keeping my promise to
him. I hate to run Jason but there is a boy in trouble and he needs my help.
I love you Jason. Rest in peace my love."

I stood up and walked back to the car. I instructed Marcus to drive us to
the residence. When we arrived at the residence, I saw the Metro-care
ambulance sitting out front. The ambulance attendants were coming out of the
house when I reached the front door. I thanked them for their assistance and
then walked into the house. Mihai met me at the bottom of the stairs and
gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. "Welcome Tim." he said with a big
smile.

"Where is Franklin?" I asked with a worried look on my face.

"Oh, he is upstairs helping the doctor get Nathan settled in. He got all
teary eyed on me when I told him about the situation. I don't suppose we
will be able to drag him outta there for some time. He's a big softy you
know." Mihai said with a half-hearted grin. "I have some news for you Tim.
Maybe it will cheer you up a bit."

"What is it Mihai?" I asked.

"Mr. Starky's final appeal was rejected last week and his execution was
carried out Thursday morning." he informed me.

"I suppose that should cheer me up Mihai, but it doesn't. Just another life
gone and nothing has changed in almost twenty years. Mr. Starky may be gone
but his kind are still alive and well." I spewed in disgust. I walked up the
stairs and into guestroom one to check in on Nathan. "How are you feeling
son?" I asked as I sat next to his bed.

"Like death warmed over. I feel hollow inside." he replied.

"Just remember that your darkest hour is only sixty minutes long Nathan.
Things will start getting better for you very soon. Just hang in there
okay." I reassured him as I leaned down and gently kissed his forehead.

"I've been beat to hell and I am tied to this bed. What else can I do but
hang in there?" he joked.

"At least you still have a bit of humor left in you." I replied as I walked
out into the hallway. The doctor followed me out and closed the door behind
him. "How long will it be until he can fly in a plane, doctor?" I asked.

"A week to ten days I am afraid. I will keep him sedated to try and
accelerate the healing process but there are no guarantees. It mostly
depends on his will to get better." he replied.

I thanked the doctor and then I headed to my room to clean up. I was now
faced with another dilemma. If it took ten days to heal Nathan enough to fly
out, what should I do? The thought of missing James' party was not a
pleasant one but Nathan needed me as well. I got undressed and climbed under
the shower in hopes that the soothing water would ease my stress. After
fifteen minutes in the shower, I did feel a little more relaxed and focused.
I got dressed in shorts and a t-shirt before heading down to the patio.

I sat at the table by the pool and Mihai joined me after getting us both a
soda. Mihai let me know that the schedule for the five interviews was on my
desk and he asked how many vacancies I needed to fill. I told him we had six
vacancies but one was now filled with Nathan so we needed five more boys. We
chatted for a bit longer and then Mihai went in to start dinner. I walked
back up to Nathan's room and asked everyone to leave us alone for a few
minutes.

"Nathan, I need you to share some information with me. I don't want you to
ask me any questions. I just want you to answer mine." I said in a serious
tone. I took out my notepad and pen and began my questioning. "What is the
name of your dealer?" I asked.

"His name is Kevin Corbin." he replied.

"And what is his address?" I asked.

"802 Case Street. It's down in Little Havana." he replied.

"Do you know the names of his friends that were with him that night?" I
asked.

"One of them is Zach Tillman. I don't know the other three except for their
first names. Howie, Tyrone, and Scottie is all I knew them by." he replied.
"You are not going to do something stupid are you sir?" he asked.

"Like I said Nathan. No questions. You will just have to trust me son." I
said as I patted his arm. I walked out of the room and Franklin rushed back
in to Nathan's side. The doctor entered the room and I closed the door
behind them. I walked downstairs into the kitchen and asked Mihai if I could
borrow his SUV. He tossed me the keys and I walked out the front door. I
climbed in the SUV and headed for downtown Miami. I parked the SUV in a
large shopping mall and walked two blocks to a taxi stand.

I took a taxi down to Little Havana and located Case Street. I paid the
cabbie and walked down the street until I found the house number Nathan had
given me. I watched the house for an hour and a half from the deli across
the street. Finally a low rider pulled into the driveway and five men in
their early to mid twenties got out of the car and went into the house. I
had no way of knowing for sure that these were the five guys who kicked the
shit out of Nathan but I took a chance that they were. I used the payphone
in the back of the deli and called the police tip line.

"I have personal knowledge of a large crack cocaine purchase that is taking
place at 802 Case Street. The men inside are all armed and very dangerous."
I informed the woman who answered.

"Can we have your name sir?" the woman asked.

"I would rather not say." I replied before hanging up the telephone. I
quickly left the deli and walked four blocks down the street before flagging
down a cab. I had the cab driver drop me off at the mall entrance and I
walked inside. I walked through the mall and out the rear entrance before
heading for the SUV. I hoped in the vehicle and headed for home. I pulled in
the driveway at 10:30pm and walked into the house.

"Where the hell have you been Tim?" Mihai demanded. "We have been worried
sick about you."

"I just needed to take a drive and clear my head Mihai. Sorry if I worried
you." I replied.

"Well come and sit down. I will warm up your dinner." he insisted.

I walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast nook. Mihai
warmed up my plate and placed it on the table along with a soda. We chatted
as I ate my dinner and then Mihai cleared the table. He told me that
Franklin had stayed in the room with Nathan all evening. He sounded a little
jealous as he spoke. I told Mihai he should be proud of Franklin for being
such a caring individual. I said good night to Mihai and walked upstairs. I
walked into Nathan's room and told him, Franklin, and the doctor good night.
Then I headed off to bed. I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

I almost jumped out of my skin when the alarm clock sounded at 6:30am. I
crawled out of bed and headed for the bathroom to handle my morning rituals.
When I finished in the bathroom, I headed down to the kitchen where Mihai
had my coffee waiting for me. Mihai sat down with Franklin at the breakfast
nook and I took my coffee back to the media room to catch the 7:00am local
news. The lead story on the news was a raid on a crack house in Little
Havana.

"Police raided a crack house in Little Havana last night acting on an
anonymous tip. The occupants of the crack house opened fire on police and a
gun battle ensued. No police or bystanders were injured in the battle but
all five occupants of the house were shot and killed. They are identified as
23 year old Tyrone Morgan, 24 year old Scott Philpot, 25 year old Zach
Tillman, 26 year old Kevin Corbin, and 26 year old Howard Baker. All five
men were residents of Miami. An undisclosed amount of crack cocaine was
seized in the raid along with numerous firearms and a large sum of cash."
reported the anchor woman.

I clicked off the television and headed back to the kitchen. "So much for
pest control." I chuckled to myself. I took a seat in the kitchen with
Franklin and Mihai.

"Nathan was doing a lot better last night Tim." Franklin stated. "He seemed
quite comfortable with me so I stayed with him all evening. He did seem a
bit worried about you though. He kept asking if you were home yet. What were
you up to last night Tim?" he asked.

I explained everything that had happened and the two of them just stared at
me with their mouths hanging wide open. I told them what the news report
said this morning and that the five scumbags would never hurt anyone again.

"Remind me never to piss him off!" Franklin said to Mihai as he pointed at
me.

"I seriously doubt you would every do something to someone like those five
did to Nathan. Relax boys! The world is a slightly better place this
morning." I stated as I got up and walked towards the stairs. I made my way
up to Nathan's room and eased the door open. The doctor was awake and
tending to Nathan who was covered in sweat and was shaking terribly.
"Hang in there Nathan. We are all right here for you." I said as I gently
rubbed his leg.

"Thanks Tim. I'm going to make it through this you know." he insisted.

"You bet your ass you are Nathan. I believe in you. Your stronger than your
habit." I encouraged him, before heading out of the room and down the stairs
to my office.

To be continued...
