Julio -- The Growing Years

Chapter 32

The afternoon was another surprise in that the restaurant could have
survived nicely if Darrel had hired a decent chef. I'm not sure how he
managed to survive if the patrons never said anything about the food.
Tomorrow while Ronnie is working with Derek, I'll talk more with Darrel
about the restaurant and the hotel about the lease.

I finished my coffee then stretched out on the bed. I was still running
things through my head as I felt myself getting drowsy. The next thing I
remember was hearing the voices of the kids as they came back from lunch. I
yawned as I tried to clear the cobwebs from my head.

"Come on Daddy," Angel said in a chipper voice. "You need to get a shower
and call Alex."

I blinked my eyes and got them accustomed to the light in the room. "Alright
sweetie, I hope you didn't fill up on a big lunch."

I got up and hurried to the bathroom so I could let out the cup of coffee I
had earlier. I came back into the room and dug into my pants pocket to find
Alex's phone number. I looked at the clock and it was 4 so I told him we'd
be leaving here about 5. I got the name of the restaurant from Jay and told
Alex. I told him we'd meet him there about 5:30 and to bring his appetite.

Ronnie was at the microwave heating water and some tea bags. I thought he
was making us some hot tea then never underestimate my kid. I watched him
work for about 10 minutes then he took a pitcher he'd bought and poured all
the tea in it. He tossed Jay the ice bucket as he added more water to the
tea. "Can you get me a big bucket of ice bro? I'm making us some iced tea."

I waited until Jay returned with the ice then drank down a glass of tea.
Even using a microwave, that boy can cook. I got some clean underwear then
headed for the bathroom to shower and shave. 20 minutes later, I returned
ready for a night out. I called the restaurant and requested a somewhat
private area for our party. I had another glass of Ronnie's tea then we
headed for the restaurant. Traffic was a bear and to top it off, there was
an accident that delayed our arrival and we were about 10 minutes late
getting to the restaurant. Alex was waiting patiently for us inside and I
thought I sensed he thought we weren't coming. "Sorry we're late Alex,
traffic was a mess."

We shook hands and he got reacquainted with the family. The hostess took us
to our table and I did get a nice secluded area so we could all talk without
disturbing the other guests. When we were all seated, a young waiter came
over and brought us menus and asked if we would like something to drink.
Alex got a cocktail so I decided to join him. The younger ones got iced tea.

We talked a little while waiting on the drinks and the one thing I noticed
again was the fact that Alex didn't have a ring on his hand. "Alex, what
happened with all the ladies that were all over you when you were younger?
I'd have thought one of them would have sunk their hooks into you."

The boys looked over when I asked my question. Alex took a sip of his drink
and looked like he was cornered. He glanced over at the others and realized
he had their undivided attention. "Uh well Miguel, I guess I was more into
the academic scene than I was the females."

Jay looked over and shook his head. "Alex, we can't live by books alone."

"I don't see a girl on your arm Jay," Alex retorted. "You're a good looking
guy. It seems the only one of you attached is your younger brother."

I knew Jay would have no problems telling Alex about Ronnie. I just didn't
know how he'd react when he heard the 3 of the guys at the table were gay.
"Well Alex, I can't say that Jay isn't necessarily unattached. He is going
into his senior year then will continue on to Medical School."

Alex's eyebrows rose when I said that. "Oh? I would have figured he would
have brought her along for dinner."

Now this was getting into a real touchy situation. "How long have you been
teaching now buddy? You should be ready to settle down?"

I saw Alex's face drop. I'd seen that before on more than one occasion.
"What is it my friend? I've know you for too many years. We used to tell
each other everything."

I looked at Jay and Ronnie and they had their hands on the table. When Alex
looked over, they slid their hands together and I saw them give each other a
little squeeze. Alex saw that then seemed to relax. "Hey Alex," Jay said
smiling. "It's ok dude. We're pretty open minded in this family."

Ronnie leaned over and kissed Jay on the cheek as Alex smiled. I think he
just figured out what was going on with them. "Miguel, I haven't settled
down for several reasons."

"Geez Alex, you don't need to tell the world you're in a relationship. It's
no one's business."

Alex shook his head then sipped his drink. "I'd lose my tenure Miguel, you
know that."

Alex was about to continue when the waiter came over. "Have y'all decided on
your entrée or would y'all like a few more minutes?"

"I believe we've decided," I said looking around the table.

The waiter then went around and took everyone's order then Alex continued
talking. "The school would crucify me if they ever found out."

"How would they?" Marco asked as he sipped his tea. "Are you or he going to
go running around announcing it? I doubt it, so how would they know."

Angel got into the conversation. "If people see you together, you're room
mates. What happens behind closed doors is private."

We continued talking for a little while then our dinner was served. During
the meal Ronnie looked at Alex and asked, "So is there someone you like
Alex?"

Alex had to swallow his mouthful hard on that question. "Um, well yeah there
is. It's nothing serious and we're casual friends right now. Neither one of
us is looking to get serious."

I finished my mouthful then sipped my drink. "That's great man. Do you think
we can meet the lucky fellow when we're here?"

Alex turned red as he almost spit out his mouthful of food. I was wondering
what was going through his head as he composed himself. "Uh well gee Miguel,
I don't know."

Marco chimed in next. "We don't really have anything on tap for tomorrow
Alex. Ronnie and Dad are going to be busy but the rest of us will be free."

Alex was looking like he either had ants in his pants or was trying to find
a hold to crawl into. "What is it Alex? You look like your pants are on
fire."

Alex didn't answer but continued to eat his dinner. We were all wondering
why he was acting like this all of a sudden. Finally after we'd finished our
meal Alex spoke. "Jay, before I say anything, I need assurances from you
that you will not say anything."

This was getting interesting. Why would he ask Jay a question like this?
"You have my word sir."

Alex thought for a moment before speaking. "Well I guess it's OK then. It's
your friend Jay."

It was Jay's turn to almost spew his tea. "You like Doug Cruthers? Does he
know this?"

Alex smiled then nodded his head. "Yes he does. We've talked about this at
length and neither of us is ready for a relationship yet considering he is
in my class."

Jay had a confused look on his face. "So what's with his saying you're a
tough teacher?"

I knew Alex expected a lot from himself so it was only natural he'd expect
the same from his students. "I know Alex son, he would expect nothing less
then he expected of himself when he was a student."

Jay smiled when he heard this. "Ronnie and I are going to be getting a place
this summer."

It then dawned on me that when he went into Medical School he would lose the
use of the dorm. "Well guys, it looks like I've forgotten one thing. When
you start Med School son, you'll need your own place because they don't have
dorms for the students. I'll see about getting you a place and then when
you've graduated, I can either sell it or rent it out for other Med
Students."

Alex looked lost at this. "I appreciate this guys, but we don't know what
we're going to do from one day to another. Maybe over the summer when we're
both on break we can talk more. The idea of having a place neutral is
inviting. It would be a good place for us to talk and not have to worry
about who might see us or something like that."

We talked a little longer then I could see Alex was showing signs of getting
tired. I got the check and paid it as he and the kids were still chatting.
We headed outside then I gave Alex a hug. "Hang in there my friend. Things
will work out for you. You look tired and we've had a long day so we'll pass
on desert tonight, but we'll be in touch."

Alex returned the hug then went and gave one to each of the kids. We got
into the Blazer then returned to the hotel. Steven and Angel went down to
their room while Jay and Ronnie waited to come in with Marco and me. As I
was getting out the key, I noticed Jay and Ronnie cuddling Marco. I had the
feeling they missed Marco in more ways than one. I got the door open and we
all came inside. Jay and Ronnie were giving Marco some very passionate
kisses. By the way they were acting; I knew where Marco would be spending
the night. "Um guys, could you take it easy for little bit before Marco has
a major accident?"

All three turned a few shades of red at my request then Marco headed into
the bathroom to empty his bladder and hope his raging boner would go down.
Jay came over and gave me a big hug. "Thanks for the dinner Dad. I was
really blown away when Alex said he had a crush on Doug. I really hope the
school doesn't find out or give them a hard time if they do. Speaking of
Alex; when are you going to find that someone special?"

That question took me by surprise with all that The Foundation had going and
now getting the restaurant for Ronnie. "As soon as I can fit it into my
schedule son. You know what we've been doing and with the traveling, it's
not really fair to try to start a relationship."

"I know Dad," Jay said while pouring a glass of tea. "But you also have
Angel to see to things so you're not quite so busy."

I hung my jacket up in the closet then fixed myself some tea. "Now, your
sister is staying in Blacksburg with Steven. Do you think it's fair to them
if Angel was trotting off at the drop of a hat?"

"I thought she wanted to work with you and The Foundation?"

"She does son," I countered. "She's also still a blushing bride and wants to
be with her husband. You and Ronnie had your high school years and before
together with all the romance that went with it. They didn't really decide
on getting romantically involved until they were both about 16 so you need
to cut them both a little slack son."

"I guess you're right Dad," Jay relented. "I guess we all just want to see
you happy."

I had removed my pants and was hanging them up in the closet when I heard
that. "What makes you all think for a moment I'm not happy? I'm watching my
children grow and see their dreams starting to come true plus the orphanage
and hotel."

Marco was listening while changing his clothes. "Um guys, I think you need
to cut Pop some slack now. He is happy with his life. I know we come first
and even as adults we will still be first in his life. I know what Pop is
missing though. I know he's missing the little children running constantly
in and out of the house and being able to hold them. Don't you remember when
he returned from Receife after his last visit?"

Jay was thinking now after Marco's question. "Yeah bro I do, but what does
that have to do with finding someone?"

Marco was still in his underwear when he walked over to Jay. He was about to
answer that question when Ronnie spoke up. "Baby, Dad misses the children.
We're grown and are away at school. Well, I was home and so was Angel until
she went to be with Steven."

I could never put anything past Ronnie. He was quiet but don't think for a
minute he wasn't observant. "Ronnie is right son, the house is going to be
empty for the first time in many years and to be quite honest, I'm not sure
how I'm going to handle that. There are projects going and that will occupy
my time and yes, Angel will be coming with me when she's needed. I know I
can't wait until Steven and Angel have a child but I know that's not in the
works for a few years yet but I will manage."

I saw a light come on in Jay's head and I was wondering what idea he'd come
up with. "How about I put off Medical School for a year then and help you?"

I appreciated the thought but I wanted him to go on and continue his
education. "I appreciate that son but I want you to continue on to Med
School as planned. You have a practice waiting on you. You'll have 2 years
Pediatric Residency then 2 years of Surgical Residency before you can join
me and I'm not getting any younger."

"Don't say that Dad," Jay shouted. "You're NOT going to die any time soon."

I giggled when he said that. "I know that son and I wasn't meaning it in
that way. What I meant was I'm not young like I used to be and you need a
steady hand to operate and I know as I get older, I'm going to lose that."

Ronnie chimed in on that one. "You're still a great surgeon Dad. You can
still run rings around a lot of them."

Marco jumped in because he knew what I was meaning. "Yes guys Pop is still a
good surgeon, but there comes a time when all of us will have to lay the
scalpel down and not pick it back up. Pop will still be a great Pediatrician
and he can still do that but his days in the OR will be over."

Jay finally understood what I was saying. "Alright Dad, I'll go on to Med
School and even try to graduate early. My dream is still to work beside you
in the OR and I want that more than anything."

"I know you do son," I said softly as I hugged him. "I also look forward to
adding your name on the door to the office."

Ronnie and Marco were standing there with their arms wrapped each other as
they pulled us into a 4 way group hug. I could also see Ronnie's hand on
Marco's butt and he was beginning to tent his undies. I looked at Ronnie

The boys left heading for their room and I got myself comfortable then
watched some television.

Down in Jay and Ronnie's room, the boys jumped Marco almost as soon as the
door closed. Marco was quickly shed of his clothes and the other two started
