JUVENILE DETENTION

Chapter 10 – The New Record

Joshua left the silent crocodile of inmates and continued straight on four
doors to arrive outside "the desk".

He knocked on the door and called out in a loud voice, "New resident,
Tolmers, reporting to the desk as instructed."

Hearing the buzz, Josh turned the handle and entered the office. He walked
straight up to the desk, stopping about a meter in front of it, and stood
straight with his hands at his side. Josh was actually quite surprised at
how quickly he had adapted to standing on full show, though he was still
acutely aware of his nakedness.

Officer Stuart looked up from the paperwork he had been reading as Josh
entered and said, "Relax, Mr. Tolmers. You are not in trouble and in fact
are about to make history. Or rather I should say more history, because you
have already made history in the school this morning with your
test. Congratulations, by the way."

"Thank you, Officer Stuart," Josh replied, beginning to glow a little in
embarrassed pride.

"This morning I had a recommendation on my desk from my manager which
rather took me by surprise and which I was inclined at first to look for a
reason to ignore. That is why I asked for you to be brought to see me
straight after breakfast. Because you are in cell block Bravo, all
observations and reports on you come to this office before they are
forwarded on to the main office for record keeping. That means that I have
seen every comment made by any of the officers and also some of the other
inmates about you and believe me there have been quite a number for one who
has only been in the Academy for a day. And the only negative one was where
you broke the rule of a silent time to show gratitude. That is a very
impressive record to achieve so quickly. Because of all this, I have
decided to listen to the recommendation made by my manager and carry out
his wishes. Turn around and pick up the item that is on the chair in the
corner."

Josh turned as instructed and looked for the chair in the corner where he
saw that the item he was to pick up was an orange overall. He quickly
walked over to the chair and picked it up and then turned back to Stuart
who was now smiling behind the desk.

"Tolmers, you have now made history again. You are the first person to have
come to this institution who has earned their overall in less than twenty
four hours. In fact you are the first person who has earned their overall
in less than seventy two hours. I am convinced that you are going to hold
that record for a very long time. Well done. Put your overall on and make
sure you are comfortable in it."

Josh stood there with his mouth open. He was not sure that he could believe
what he had just been told and hoped that it was not some horrible
mistake. Slowly he took the overall out of its plastic bag and let it
unfold as he held it by the collar. Just below the collar on the inside of
the overall was same number as he had seen on his clothing basket when he
arrived – 269. He undid the front and started to put his leg into it
waiting for the laughter and to be told not to get above his station, but
no such mockery came. As he was doing up the buttons down the front he
managed to find a voice and thanked Stuart sincerely.

"You don't need to thank us, Tolmers. Thank yourself for being the kind of
resident we would love to fill this place with. Now, none of us can promise
you anything, so we don't want you getting your hopes up, because the
chances are that even if we can do something the wheels move so slowly that
your six months could be up before we have got anywhere, but there are at
least three officers here who believe your story. We are going to be in
contact with some others to see if we can get your story proved to be true
and then send you back for a retrial with a decent lawyer and judge."

"Thank you, Officer Stuart, and please thank the others for me too. The two
officers who transported me here were also going to try and do
something. You might be able to get some help from them as they live in the
town where it all happened. I have the address of one of them in my clothes
in the basket if that will help."

"That will not be necessary. We have their names and contact details on the
transfer document, so we can get hold of them quite easily. Now your mates
must be thinking you have been sent to the cooler, so perhaps you had
better go back and join them. They will need to show you to the library and
recreation room. Mr. Tolmers, carry on in the way you have this far and you
might set yet another record of not being sent to the cooler during your
stay. At least not sent officially. I hope the next time I call you to this
office will be to give you some news and not to correct you. Dismissed."

Josh turned and left the office with a little spring in his step. He was
proud of himself and was beginning to feel that there was some justice in
the world after all. When he got to the door to the cell block he pushed
the bell and heard the buzz as the door was released. Passing through he
moved straight forward towards the barred gate and found that to be
unlocked and he pushed it open to enter into the noise of the inmates all
talking and moving about, as their cells were open and it seemed that they
had some freedom of movement at that time.

Josh had only got about two meters past the gate when someone called out in
a loud voice, "Fuck! My eyes deceive me. He's got his bloody overalls
already!" It only took a matter of seconds for the room to fall silent as
each person turned in disbelief to see with their own eyes. The silence
also only lasted a matter of seconds before it was broken as one person
began to clap and the whole cell block followed suit with clapping and
cheering, making Josh feel more conspicuous than he had when he was totally
naked.

Josh raised a hand in acknowledgement of the praise he was receiving and
made a beeline towards his cell. When he got there he saw that his cell
mates had made up his bed for him and put his toothpaste and brush away
along with his toilet roll. "Gee thanks, guys. You didn't have to do all
that. I could have got my bed made sometime before lights out."

"You were gone so long we thought you must have been sent to the cooler, so
we made your bed and put your supplies away before someone had them while
we were not looking. But shit, man, how did you manage to get your overalls
so quickly? I was here for four days before I got overalls and Andy took
three days to get his and we are some of the better ones," Chris said.

"I think it has got something to do with Mr. Succum. It seems he
recommended it to Officer Stuart before he went off duty this morning."

"It has got everything to do with Succum. No one in Bravo gets their
overalls without his agreement. But still in less than a day? That is
unheard of," Andy said.

"Officer Stuart did say it was something of a record. Wonder if it has
something to do with Mr. Succum's visit to the cell last night?" Josh
mused.

"What do you mean, his visit to the cell last night?" Andy asked.

"After lights out I was lying here still awake. With so many thoughts going
through my head I could not sleep, and he shone his torch in my eyes and
then talked with me for a bit," Josh explained.

"Are you sure it was talking with you?" Chris asked with a smile.

"Well there was a bit more but he mostly asked me questions and checked
that Officer Jake had done a good job."

"And then allowed you to find out what a man's package was like," Andy
said, smiling. "Did he make you swallow it or just jerk him?"

"I swallowed, but it was not as nice as what I got earlier."

"Really? There must be something in this prison slop after all." Andy
laughed.

"Well come on, we had better show this record maker where the library is or
we will be pulled up by his `mate' for not treating him right," Chris
teased.

"Yeah, I reckon you could be about right there. You might just find that
you are now Mr. Succum's boy," Andy agreed.

"What do you mean?" Josh asked.

"We'll tell you once we get to the library. Remember, the rule of silence
still applies whenever you walk the corridors," Andy told him.

The three of them set off and followed almost the same route as they had
taken earlier to get to the classrooms and the teaching administration but
past the door to the administration office they turned and went through a
door diagonally across the corridor from it, which opened onto a flight of
stairs to take them up to the next level. Chris and Andy pointed out some
more class rooms and told Josh that he would visit some of them, at least,
as they were science and biology labs. Although strictly speaking the rule
of silence still applied to where they were, it was never enforced in the
education wing except immediately before and after classes. When they
entered the library Josh was astounded. It was definitely more than a
library and was not as quiet as you would expect from a library. The room
was considerably bigger than Bravo cell block and Josh could see the
bookshelves at the far end that made up the real library part and then
there were a few computer terminals and a bit of a lounge with comfy
armchairs rather like a working man's club of old. Immediately in front of
them was a selection of pool, table tennis and mini soccer tables with
different inmates around them enjoying a game or two. Interspersed within
the array of orange overalls were a few uniforms of officers who appeared
to be wandering around and stopping to have a short chat with different
inmates from time to time.

One of those officers was Steven, who, recognising Josh, came straight over
to talk to him. "I see it is true that you made history today by getting
your overalls already. Well done."

"Thank you, Officer Steven," Josh responded.

"You two, enjoy this man while you can, because I have a feeling he might
not be here for his full time, but look after him too. There are several
people who have an interest in him and will not take kindly to him being
hurt in any way." Officer Steven looked at both Andy and Chris as he made
that last statement, leaving them under no doubt that Josh was being
considered differently from the rest of the inmates.

"Don't worry, Officer Steven, we will take good care of our friend, and we
will also protect him from the others. We have that power and will use it
as necessary," Andy assured Steven.

"You do that, and if you need some help along the way, just ask me,"
Officer Steven told them and then moved on to talk to another of the
inmates.

"Okay guys, I'm a bit confused here. What exactly did Officer Steven mean
by all that and what is it you were going to explain to me when we got
here?" Josh asked.

"I know this place is like an alien world to you, but surely someone as
bright as you are can work some of it out," Chris started. "An academy
officer in charge visits you during the night and then the next day you get
treated in a way no other inmate has ever been treated before. Three or
four officers advise us to look after you carefully. Either you have not
been truthful with us and there is something different about your
incarceration here; or you have been truthful and the officers believe you
where others did not and feel that you are here unfairly. And with that in
mind feel you could possibly bring trouble on them for the way they treated
you if you ever get a fair trial. Or a higher up officer has taken a shine
to you and sees you as his sex toy and the others are there to make sure
his toy is clean and polished with no chips."

"Or a combination of a couple of those. Care to tell us which?" Andy
asked.

"Wait a bit!" Josh began. "I'm not here under any false pretenses unless
you count the judge and lawyer as pretenders." Then the penny dropped. "You
think I have been placed in here to spy on you guys?" he asked and went on
without giving either of them a chance to reply. "I swear to you that what
I have told you is the truth. There are no secret agendas and if an
officer wants me as his sex toy, that is not something that I have tried to
make happen in any way. I promise."

Andy started to laugh. "Don't look so worried. Josh, we told you we
believed you and we do. I was just teasing. Look, several of the officers
believe you too. They believe you for the same reasons we believe you. You
are too different from the rest of us in here. You are not a lay-about or
delinquent. You definitely don't do drugs or such like. Neither are you a
dealer; we can see you don't have the street nonce to do that. So how else
can you be locked up with us but that a mistake has been made that has led
to a serious miscarriage of justice."

"And as you can see from the reaction of those officers, they are not all
that bad. If you give them shit they will give you shit back, but mostly do
as they ask and it is plain sailing to the end of your time," Chris pointed
out.

"But there is one thing you have done. You have put Chris and me in a bit
of a position. Yes we know you did not intend it, but we are there
anyway. Fortunately I don't think we have done anything that has caused you
to suffer much, but now we have been warned we have an added duty to keep
you safe from other inmates. In our cell block that is easy but in this rec
room and outside that is not so easy because our power does not really go
beyond our cell block. So we need you to help us and do what we tell you to
do when we tell you and you can ask us questions later when we are in a
safer zone," Andy explained. "Will you do that for us, please?"

"Hey listen, guys, the last thing I want is for any of us to get in trouble
or hurt. I will do as you ask and even let you spit roast me again if you
want and feel you are allowed to do that. And you are right, I do feel like
an alien here who knows nothing, so I am grateful for your guidance. And if
in ignorance I do something that gets you in the shit, I am sorry and I
don't mean to."

"There is one thing that you couldn't let us do yesterday that I will get
great pleasure in doing today. I want you to let me strip you when we are
back in our cells after dinner and then have some fun together. Let us get
some pleasure from teaching you about things you have never even
considered," Andy told Josh.

"Are you serious? You really mean that undoing a few buttons and pulling an
overall off a guy would get you turned on?"

"Absolutely, and then you can strip both of us and turn us on even more,"
Chris replied.

"Right. Enough of this talk for now. Let's get on and have some fun of a
different sort. Ever played pool before, Josh?" Andy asked.
