Kevin
Chapter 13
By Tom Cup

Tears were streaming down my face partly because I believed, hoped, that
Richy was safe; and partly because I was afraid of what was going to happen
to me next. I would live up to my part of the bargain; I would let them use
my body, anyway they wanted, hoping that they would live up to their part
and keep my family safe. I would never know for sure but it was all I could
do. I looked up at the Lion and he smiled.

"You're afraid?" he asked.

I nodded and started to cry, "You stole me from my father's house on my
birthday."

"No dear boy," he said unsympathetically, "I saved you. You were going to
be taken whether I wanted you or not. If it were not for me, who knows to
whom you would have been sold. It is a blessing that, this person, drew
enough attention to himself that I became aware of his plan and offered to
purchase you myself."

"What are you going to do to me?" I asked.

"What do you think I will do to you?" he responded.

There were to many hurtful things going through my mind to answer. Even the
things that I had done with Tony and Antonio now seemed awful when I thought
that I might have to do them with this man, his friends or clients. Chuck
really had found the prefect tool for his revenge. I would suffer in the
arms of men I did not love, or care for, while remembering, and doing for
them, what I longed to do with the men I did love. He stood silently
watching me and I knew he wanted an answer but I could give only tears.

"So," Chuck interrupted, "I guess that's it. You have the kid. The little
brat is taken care of. Now, all I need is my payment and I'll be on my
way."

"I should like to get a better idea of what services you are promising from
the boy," the Lion replied.

"Fucking answer him you brat before I beat the shit out of you!" Chuck
bellowed but I couldn't. I knew what to say, I knew what he wanted to hear,
but the words just wouldn't come out my mouth.

"You seemed so brave a few moments ago," the Lion continued ignoring Chuck,
"and now you cry."

I tried to compose myself and answered, "I'll still do whatever you say."
Hoping he would now spare me the humiliation of having to spell it out.

"If I should tell you to drop to your knees and to suck this Chuck person's
cock, would you do that?" he asked and I looked over at Chuck who was now
more than a little interested in this line of questioning. I lowered my
head and nodded.

"And why would you do this," he continued, "From what I understand, you hate
him more than anyone else on earth and he feels the same about you?"

"I promised," I whispered.

"Ah, a promise!?" he boomed, "You would bring enjoyment to your enemy
because of a promise!?"

I nodded and added, "Yes, and because you said if I did what you wanted, you
would keep him away from my family."

"Ah," cooed the Lion, "So, it isn't really just the promise you are afraid
of breaking. What you are really afraid of is your family being hurt. You
do this to protect them."

"I told you," I said looking him in the eyes, "I'll do anything to protect
my family. If you want me to suck him, I'll do it! If you want me to let
him fuck me, I'll do it. I'll do whatever you say, I just want him to leave
my family alone from now on!"

He smiled and looked at Chuck, "Mr. Bolognia is a powerful man in this
community. I would not have ventured to make this move against him."

"Well," responded Chuck, "I don't plan on being around long. I plan to get
as far away from here as I can. Go somewhere where he'll never find me. As
soon as I get my money."

"You'll get what's coming to you," the man said, and moved from in front of
me. That's when I saw it. I stared at the chair he had been sitting in:
the beautifully carved lion's heads at the top of the chair's back board;
and on the floor where the huge legs curved gracefully down into them: most
noticeable of all, the crested "B" on the backing.

"Indeed you shall," I heard a voice behind me say. Both Chuck and I turned
at the same moment to see Tony leaning against the door. He walked toward
my inquisitor, and he simply stepped aside; his hand having slipped inside
his jacket. We watched as Tony took the now vacant seat. The doorman and
the bodyguard were now standing beside Chuck. "What the fuck!" Chuck yelled
cocking his head to look in the direction of the man we had thought was the
Lion. "You dirty bastard, you doubled crossed me!"

"No," answered the man, "You wished to make a deal with the Lion. The Lion
has arrived. Make your deal."

"Hey," began Chuck looking from the man to Tony and back again, "You're
telling me... I thought you were the Lion."

"If you had thought at all," the man answered, "You would have wondered
about such a chance meeting in a bar; you would have wondered about the ease
and quickness of finding a buyer for a young boy; you would have wondered
why there were no negotiations on the price. If you had thought, you would
not have made yourself known to us."

"Come here, my son," Tony said. I went and stood beside him behind the
desk. He told me to turn around and he cut the tape from my wrist. The
man, who I learned was Vincent, motioned to someone outside the door. He
was handed a robe. He came over and helped me into it. Tony turned to me and
said, "I have business to settle with Chuck. The kind that is... 'not
proper for table talk.' Will you go with Vincent? You and Richy will be
driven back to the house."

"Send Richy," I answered, "I want to stay." We stared into one another's
eyes for a few moments before he nodded. I came to understand a great deal
in that moment: how I was never really in any danger: how, after this
night, Chuck would never hurt anyone again: how my new family protected it's
own. I had learned many lessons since coming to live with Tony but this one
was the one I would cherish most. My family would take care of me, no
matter what.

The two guards forced Chuck to his knees as he was trying to explain how it
was all a misunderstanding; their jackets open with their hands on their
weapons. "You could have learned much from this child," Vincent said to
Chuck before he left to escort Richy home, "He thought nothing of himself,
only of his family and would have done anything for them; you thought only
of yourself and cared nothing for anyone else." He looked at Tony who said,
"This day, you have earned the Lion's favor."

Vincent shook his head and replied, "It is an old debt repaid, my friend."

Chuck was now in tears, shaking his head, and babbling, "I didn't hurt him.
Tell him Kevin. Tell him I didn't hurt you...It was all just a joke...I was
about to tell him that when you came in...tell him Kevin... I would have
never hurt you... tell him I...."

"It is foolish to slumber in the den of the lion," Tony said, "It is suicide
to try to steal one of his cubs. You have trespassed on the territory of
the Lion of Bolognia. You have threatened the life of one of his clan and
have laid your hands on his only son." The two men each grabbed Chuck by a
shoulder; took their guns out and pointed them at his head. "You would have
been wise to have left the country after posting bond in Philadelphia," Tony
continued, "Perhaps then I would have forgotten about the previous
injustices you committed against my son and his siblings."

"Wait! Wait!" screamed Chuck, "Oh, God, please wait. Kevin, I'm a dick,
OK. You know that... I know that.... But for god's sake, you can't let this
happen. Please Kevin, I'll go away....yea... I promise. Far away. You'll
never see me again just like you wanted. Remember? I'll do it, I promise!
I'll do it!"

I shook my head. "How many times did we beg you for mercy, Chuck?" I asked,
"You showed none. I promised Richy you would never hurt us again but you
came back to do just that. You terrified him! You didn't beat me only
because Vincent gave you orders not too. If you could have had your way,
you would have beaten me to near death. I know you Chuck. It's the way you
are. My father is right. If you had gone away, and left us alone, in time
we would have forgotten about you; maybe even forgiven you, but it is far to
late for that now. Good-bye Chuck."

Tony and I followed as they drug Chuck crying to the end of the pier. I
didn't enjoy what I witnessed but I didn't feel sorry for him either. In
the end, he was pathetic; crying and wetting himself just as Richy had from
fear of him. I thought it, somehow, just that he should experience just how
much terror he had brought into our lives; if only for a short time. He
always pretended to be such a big man but, all the while, he was nothing but
a fucking baby. I realized that he terrified us to make himself feel
bigger, better, but it was still no excuse for what he had done. I didn't
turn away even as he knelt pleading, and crying, in his soiled pants, for
his life. I watched as the two men fired bullets into his head and his body
dropped with a dull thud on to the deck. They wrapped his lifeless body in
blankets and chains, put it in one of the waiting motorboats, and drove it
out to be dumped at sea.

Tony looked at me when it was done. "You OK?" he asked. I flung myself
into his arms, weeping from exhaustion, no longer having to remain composed.
"I knew you'd come for me," I cried, "I knew it!" He laughed and held me
tight leading me back inside. We went back up to the warehouse office and
called Marie. Richy had arrived and told her most of what he understood had
happened. He had been crying uncontrollably saying it was his fault that I
had been taken away. Marie had gotten him washed, given him a sedative, and
put him to bed. "I do not wish to scold you, little one," she said to me
after Tony had explained that I was all right and handed me the phone,
"However...."

"I know," I cut her off, "You told me not to go anywhere without you,
Antonio, Dad or one of the staff; whether it was on grounds or not. I'm
sorry."

I could hear her sigh at the other end of the phone. "I love you," she
breathed, "Hurry home."

"I love you too, mom," I whispered and hung up the phone.

I turned to Tony and asked, "What should we say happened to Chuck?"

He took a deep breath and answered, "Marie and Antonio will not ask."

I nodded, "What about Richy and the others?

"He promised us that he was going far, far away and would never be bothering
any of you again. I really do not believe he will ever be coming back. Do
you?" he asked cocking his head toward me and raising an eyebrow.

I looked at him and smiled shaking my head.

"As for where he went," Tony concluded, "I cannot say."

I nodded my agreement. I knew that we would never speak of this again. It
was the first lesson he had taught me: what happens between us; remains
between us.
