Hey there, my name is James Roberts and I live in a small town in New
Zealand. Today is my 18th birthday and in just a few days time I am going
to be embarking on the biggest adventure to date in my - so far - rather
uneventful life. At the beginning of this year I made the decision not to
return to high school to complete my final year and instead I chose to
spend half of the year as a counsellor at a summer camp in the USA. This
was a great decision in my books; why slave away being miserable in school
for another year when I already have what is required for university entry?
So I'm off, half way across the world, alone and ready to experience what
another culture has to offer. I'm going to a summer camp somewhere in
northern Minnesota. I'm not really too sure where it is or what I'm doing
when I get there; you see this has all happened really quite fast, I only
just got an e-mail asking me to work for them about a month ago and here I
am all but on the airplane.

The days pass quickly and I'm soon sitting in my cramped seat for a 12 hour
flight to Los Angeles. Being newly of-age (in my country anyway) I order
myself a bourbon and coke then try to get comfortable and enjoy the
in-flight entertainment. I suppose that I can take some time now to tell
you all a bit more about myself. Well as I said earlier my name is James
and I am about 6'1" with dark brown hair and eyes and a solid heavy build,
a bit like a forward in any rugby team. I don't actually play rugby though,
in fact apart from playing soccer when I was 7 I haven't played any team
sports at all. I have been sexually active for the last 4 years or so but I
have not really set priority on finding a lasting relationship. Being a gay
teen has caused me to be somewhat of an introvert at school and has led to
some self confidence issues, all of which I plan to change on this new
adventure where nobody knows me and I can just start out fresh.

I arrive at L.A. and have only half an hour to catch a 3.5 hour connecting
flight to Denver and then another 3.5 hour flight to Minneapolis. At this
point I am picked up by a member of the permanent staff of the camp and
taken on the 4 hour drive north to the camp. In all this time I haven't
managed to sleep a wink from the sheer excitement of being in a new place,
meeting new people and the happenings to come.

We arrive at camp at 10pm. I feel really sorry for Amanda, the staff member
who drove me to camp, as I have just not stopped talking the whole way
there. I don't think she minds though, she seems interested in hearing all
about my home and she answered all of the questions about camp that I threw
at her. Camp is located on a property of immense proportions, down a huge
driveway that winds its way through the forest for about a mile. We pull up
to the main building which, like the property that it sits on, is
huge. About 30 rooms I am told. I am led through the front doors and shown
to my room. Amanda tells me that staff orientation starts at 7am in the
library down the hall and she leaves me to get settled.

In the morning I wake to the sound of my alarm going off, it feels like I
have only just lay down and could really do with a few more hours. I
groggily get out of bed and after a quick shower to wake myself up I make
myself presentable and head to orientation.

In orientation I am introduced to the other counsellors and staff
members. There is a real mix of people here and it promises to be great
getting to know them all. There is a guy from the Czech Republic, a girl
from the Netherlands and a bunch of others from various places in the
USA. Once introductions are over and done with we get to the week of
training and development. All this time passes by really quickly and with
the help of team building exercises I soon start to bond with the other
staff members. Its Saturday night now and we have spent the last few hours
preparing for the first wave of campers arriving at 1pm tomorrow. I can
already tell that this is going to be a time to remember.

Thanks for taking the time to read my quick introduction. I promise that
the story will get much steamier in the next instalments. Any feedback or
suggestions will be appreciated via e-mail; please don't be too harsh as
it's my first attempt at writing a story.
