Spiders Can't Role Play
By Angela Mynah
Last time I had Mike in my bedroom we had made love, but that was
months ago. This time his visit was cyber. Physically, he was in his own
room with Mercedes and what they were getting up to, I refused to let my
mind imagine, however, he was in the GY&TBCR room with me.
GY&TBCR stands for "Gay Young and Teen Boy Chat Room". Mercedes had
been granted the status of 'Honorary Boy' and given membership. She was one
of only three girls who had been awarded this honour, the other two being a
pair of girls who loved each other and we rarely heard from them anyway. We
had nearly fifty boy members, though, thinking about it, that could have
been better phrased!
Mike and Mercedes were not frequent visitors to this room any more,
only really joining in if they wanted to contact me. Tonight however, they
were there to meet someone.
I wanted them to meet a boy called Matt. I had been chatting to Matt
since he joined our group about five weeks ago, we had exchanged photographs
over the msn messenger and I can only really describe him as hot. Hott Hottt
Hotttt big time super hot with nuclear burn hotness.
I was embarrassed when he said he thought I was hot too, 'cos I know I
am just dead ordinary. OK I admit that I went all kind of shaky when he said
I was a looker, and I couldn't believe my luck when he said he wanted an
eyeball on me. Well that's not strictly true, when I asked him what he
meant, and he said he wanted a real meet with me, that's when I couldn't
believe my luck.
I believe in taking precautions, No not that kind, well not yet anyway
that's when the time comes. No I mean meeting a guy for real when I've only
ever met him in a chat room. I've heard all the horror stories and I know
what I'm doing. Sometimes I can't believe how naïve people can be.
Firstly, after I had been logged off from the room a while, I logged on
again only this time under Mercedes run-id. She had shared her password with
me to let me do this. I knew if she tried to log in and found her name being
used, she would log in under Mikes. They would be together anyway. Being
logged in as a girl, in a 'gay boys' chatroom meant that, more often than
not, nobody would make a play to chat to me. I would be left alone to watch
who was chatting to whom.
Matt was chatting in open room to another recently joined member, Luke.
They talked for a while and it was obvious that they not only knew each
other but had met in real life and often watched movies and things together.
I could tell that they were good friends but that was all. No relationship
there. There were two other members that had met them, twins called Jonathan
and Marcus,
I had not yet seen either of the twins logged on, but their pics were
in the members section and apart from being too young for me, I could see
that they were cute. All of them were friends with each other and as I
looked at the membership statistics, I saw that they all joined at about the
same time. It all hung together fine. I logged off as Mercedes.
We have an adult membership in the group too. That's their name for it,
we call it "Codgers Corner". They are pretty good really and generally do
not interfere, they say they are only there to advise us. Ha! What do they
know about anything that we don't eh? Still, we leave them there, it makes
them feel good. Makes them feel that they are helping us. Two of them had
chatted to Matt and I got no negative feedback from there either.
I wanted to talk with Matt before meeting him, I felt it would have
been better, but when ever I tried his number, the line was busy. I knew he
had Broadband because of the speed the pics downloaded, yet somehow his line
was always engaged. That really annoyed me sometimes. Well again that's not
quite true, the one and only time the line was available was when I called
it on the off chance one day from my mobile. His dad answered but told me
that Matt was out. I could tell that Matt's dad didn't approve of me, and
wondered if Matt had told him that he was gay or maybe he just didn't
approve of chatrooms.
I told Mike about Matt and he told Mercedes, She was a bit sceptical
about him especially when I showed the pair of them Matt's photo.
"Are you sure he's gay? He's a bit too good looking to be wasted on
other guys."
I could tell she was joking ... well almost joking, she seemed to think
he was just too good to be true.
"There is a flaw in your argument. This is a pic of a boy. Gay or
straight he would be too good to be true for somebody, but he is real,
here's the proof, it's a real photograph. He wants to meet me so what's the
point of showing a false photograph? It has to be genuine. Other people have
met him as too, so what more proof do you want?"
Whether it was to humour me or just to shut me up I don't know but
Mercedes went quiet on me. I could tell she had doubts about Matt so I
reckoned I would just have to prove my point to her. We agreed to be in the
chatroom at half past seven that evening, meantime Mike was almost gushing
about how I had picked up a real stunner of a guy and that I deserved a nice
one.
Well, now you know how I come to be in my bedroom logged on to a gay
teen chatroom talking to the girl who stole my boyfriend away from me. We
hadn't waited long when Jonathan logged in. Both Mercedes and I tried to get
him into a private conversation at the same time, but no worries, he chatted
to both of us quite happily.
It was a short chat we each had with him and when we compared notes it
was looking good. Even though I had never chatted to Jonathan before, he
said that Matt kept talking about me and how much he wanted to meet me. He
told Murky (I had taken to calling her that) that he often went round to
Matt's house and listened to music. Sometimes his brother would go too but
there was nothing more than friendship between them all. As he had no idea
that Mercedes would tell me everything that was said, he added that Luke
fancied his chances with me too. Luke was a year or two younger than me and
I really wasn't interested in him other than as a friend. The compliment was
nice though.
For about an hour we chatted to both Jonathan and Marcus until Luke
logged in. Again, no sooner had his name been displayed than Mercedes was in
private conversation with him. I was still chatting to Marcus but the two of
them had to go, it was getting late and they still had some school work to
finish off.
I was beside myself with pride as Matt logged on and sent me cyber
hugs. I could tell it was Mike who started a private chat with Matt, poor
guy can't type to save his life, but it did make me wonder where Murky was.
I chatted to Matt and sent hugs and kisses. The more I chatted the more it
was blindingly obvious to us both that we were made for each other.
Mike was sitting on the side occasionally sending me private messages.
He could see I wanted Matt and he said 'go for it' in as many words.
Mercedes was less keen, she said it would all end in tears but I knew what I
wanted, I knew what I needed, I knew I had fallen in love with a boy who I
had never even met. I was going to change that as soon as was possible.
I asked Matt if there was any chance of meeting him tomorrow evening
and if so where. Mercedes sent me a private message asking me to keep them
both informed of any arrangements we might make. She was a bit pissed at me
when I replied "Yes mummy".
I was really proud when Matt said he was going to tell his father about
us. I asked about his mother but he said she went when he was just a kid. I
wasn't sure if he meant died or left, but it was none of my business so I
never pressed the matter. All this time Murky was asking me what was going
on and all the time I was getting more and more pissed at her. I did
something I know I shouldn't have done, I set the 'Ignore' on her.
I saw Luke saying goodbye to Mike or Mercedes , I couldn't tell which
but I think it was Mike. Luke logged off. Pity, I never got the chance to
say thanks for the nice things he said about me. Mum Knocked on my door and
came in.
"Its that nice young Mercedes on the phone for you, please bring the
phone back when you're finished."
"Hiya Murky... Yes I know, sorry about that but you were going on a
bit... Yes I am going to his house to support him, he's going to tell his
dad tomorrow night... That's right, he's coming out and he wants me there...
Ahh great, I'll see you in five, I'll be here."
I was glad that Murky said they were coming round, I was feeling
guilty at 'ignoring' her, also I suppose I had better tell her all the
arrangements. I was so proud of my Matt and happy that he was making this
step without me having talked him into it. That was one mistake I was never
going to make again.
It suddenly felt very odd having Mike in my bedroom with Murky, I kept
thinking about all the things Mike and I had got up to in here. I wondered
if this was what was going through Murky's mind. Looking at the way she
looked at my room and my bed in particular, I reckoned it was exactly what
she was thinking about.
"Right Chris, I'm not going to pry but where are you going? What time
are you going there? And what are you going to do when you get there? Apart
from that I don't want to know. Whatever it is I don't want to know. Its
private. Its you and whoever."
"Whoever? What do you mean 'whoever'?"
"Sorry Chris but there's something not right about all this. That boy
isn't what he says he is. I don't know what's wrong but something is. For
Christ's sake Chris, you've not even spoken to him yet."
"I know I've not spoken to him but that's not because I haven't tried.
I called him loads of times but the phone is always engaged. Anyway, that
doesn't matter 'cos I'm sure going to speak to him tomorrow."
All this time Mike was just sitting on the bed listening to the two of
us. He said nothing, he just sat there. Eventually he looked at Murky.
"Are you going to tell him what you think or are you leaving that plum
job for me?"
"Tell me what? What have you found out? Oh come on, what is it with you
two? Why can't you just let me find my boyfriend? Why do you have to
interfere?"
"Honest Chris, We want you to find a boyfriend, a really really nice
boyfriend. Merk and I want that very much, but we don't think this boy is
right, something is wrong. Merk is sure of it."
I saw Mercedes wince a bit at that. She spoke just a little coolly
"Another thing I am sure of Chris, is that if Mike wants to live the
rest of his life, still in possession of both his balls, he will stop
calling me 'Merk'. You calling me Murky, I forgive, I even like it from you
but you're gay, I can forgive you anything. But Mike, well that's different.
If he wants to change my name he needs to think very very carefully about
what name he picks, and it had bloody well better be a pretty one."
There was no doubt about it, I loved Mercedes. Albeit in my own strange
way but love it was. I started to hope that Mike would marry her as soon as
everybody was legal age so I got to be best man and gave her a kiss. That's
all I wanted to do mind, just a kiss.
I decided to give her all the information she wanted, addresses, times
the lot. Even though I was resenting the intrusion rather, I still
understood Mike and Murky's concern. Hmmm Mike and Murky. It kind of rolls
of the tongue. I like it.
Wondering if 'Chris and Matt' could be made to flow in some similar
way, I toyed with the names. Matt and Chris... Matty and Chris... Chrissy
and Matt... Oh God no. Never Chrissy.
Well, Mike and Murky left, wishing me luck for tomorrow. I knew Murky
still had doubts but Mike would set her straight. Matt was a beautiful
wonderful person and we were going to get together.
I sat on my bed wondering what to do. I couldn't see why Mercedes was
so dead set against Matt. A walk. That's what was needed, a nice fresh walk.
Think things through.
The evening was a typical late spring evening. Dramatic clouds and the
late sun behind, sending its rays slicing into the sea. The menacing grey
water swallowing the thoughts of the seagulls as they skimmed its surface. I
walked along the promenade, absorbing the atmosphere. Call me paranoid if
you like but I could hear footsteps almost matching mine, step for step. I
increased my pace but so did they. I slowed down , so did they. The
Promenade had been deserted as I joined it so who was this following me. I
spun round.
"Ahh Hello young man, I thought it was you. Good to see you still
alive. Nice to see you never took the swim."
My friend the astronomer was no more than a pace behind me, still with
his old binoculars dangling from his neck on a piece of string, still
wearing that suit that must have looked all the rage twenty years ago and
still with those captivating eyes burning like the fire of an opal in the
sunlight.
"So you have more questions for me. Good. I like questions. What's the
subject of the day then?"
"What makes you think I have questions for you"
"Well you're here aren't you?"
"Yes."
"And you have conjured me up out of thin air haven't you?"
"Errr Yes."
"Well then. It's either because you want to take me out to dinner then
perhaps take in a movie, or you have a question you want to ask. Which is it
to be?"
"Ok ok ok, I have a question."
"Thank goodness for that. I have already eaten and I really don't
like the sorts of films you would want to watch. What's your question?
"What's wrong with Matt?"
"Nothing."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm as sure as you are!"
"Am I sure?"
"No."
"How do you know?"
"If you were sure, you would be walking me to that restaurant."
"Hmmm, Do you like Chinese?"
"Not a lot. After half an hour you'd be imagining I was hungry
again."
I started walking further along the sea front. He was right. If I
didn't have a nagging doubt I wouldn't have needed him. I replayed our
conversation back in my mind, what did it prove? Well it proved I had a
warped mind. I needed to talk for real, but to whom?
"Try me."
I looked. Dave from 'Leisure Marine Protection Services' or 'pier
security' to us, was standing by me, just for that moment. Yes. That was the
answer. I would go to the pier and talk to security.
"Hey Guys, Super stud Chris is come to see us! Either that, or he's
come to look at the surf in awe and wonderment."
I looked at the sea. I had seen more surf on puddles in the road.
Smiling I went in the hut. The kettle was at its normal condition of just
about to boil and within moments a cup of tea was helping my thought
processes.
I showed the three guards my picture of Matt and all agreed that he
was a fine looking boy. After I told them about the circumstances of our
meeting and all about the chatroom, Dave looked a little less sure, the
other two were still acting pretty positively, and telling them that three
other boys from the room had met Matt clinched it. The mood was 'Go for it'
from everybody... except Dave.
It was time to take stock. Those in favour for the meeting were Gramps
and Steve on the pier, Mike and Mum and Dad. Mum and Dad had agreed that he
would be a nice friend for me, but only after I had explained to them that I
was no idiot and that I knew all the pitfalls from meeting someone from the
internet. I had explained all the checks I had made first off and they were
satisfied with this.
Against the meeting, or at least apprehensive about it were Dave and
Mercedes. I suddenly realised that this was alarming, because those were the
very two people who's opinions I values the most.
"Please Dave, Tell me what's worrying you."
"Hell Lad, If I could put words to my worry I would, but I cant. It
just doesn't sound quite right to me, something's crook and I don't know
what. You sound like you covered all bases but I get this nagging doubt. And
I can't tell you in all honesty to ignore me. Sorry boy but I vote against
any meeting just yet."
"Suppose I tell him to meet me here, on the end of the Pier. You
could monitor the meeting and I would be safe."
"Yes that will work, he can tell his dad another day when you know him
better. That's a far better idea."
I was feeling much lighter in my mind now. That was the way to play
it. Meet on neutral ground. There was almost a bounce in my step as I walked
back down the promenade along the shoreline and towards my house.
Back home I contacted Murky and told her. She was much happier and
even as we chatted I saw Matt log-on. He was slightly disappointed at first
as he had been building up his courage ready to tell his father, but, after
he thought about everything I told him, he agreed that meeting on neutral
ground was safer for both of us. After all, he didn't know me either!
That night must have been one of my longest nights, willing the day
to start. We had agreed to meet on the pier head straight after school and
take things from there. The night had dragged and the day at school had
dragged even worse. At the lunchtime break I had a chat with a largish
spider I found in the school library. He ended up by wishing me all the very
best of luck. As I left him I heard one of our lady teachers scream followed
by a loud swat noise. Maybe I should have wished him luck too.
It finally happened. The school bell rang signalling the end of the
educational day and I suddenly felt very nervous, suppose he didn't like me.
What if he rejected me? I started heading towards home.
My house is between my school and the pier, this gave me the chance to
change into nice fresh clean clothes. I still wore school uniform as we had
agreed to meet straight after school and that would be what he would be
wearing. I must have broken all records getting to the pier and was there at
the end, waiting, by a quarter past four.
I was relieved to find I was there first. I don't know why but that was
important to me. I was pacing back and forth when suddenly there he was. No,
not Matt, my astronomer friend. Sitting watching me pace from pier side to
pier side he looked down the pier.
"He's not going to come. You know that don't you. You've come all this
way and got hot and bothered for nothing. He isn't going to turn up. I'm
right aren't I."
"No you're wrong. He will turn up. He will come. He's just been
delayed that's all. Anyway, Why do you think he's not going to?"
He wasn't there! My tramp of an astronomer friend was no longer
sitting there. Because I had no answer for him, he had disappeared into my
own logic. Suddenly I felt very alone, very vulnerable, even a little
frightened.
It was time to sit down and to think clearly. Fact. He had been really
keen to meet me. Fact. I knew his address. Fact. I didn't know which school
he went to so I couldn't know how long it would take him to get here. Oh
Fuck the facts, where was he?
How on earth did society manage to exist before Mobile Phones? I was
still wondering about where he was when my phone bleeped to tell me it had
received a text. My hands shook as I read it.
"Chris I cant come been grounded by dad pls come here soz phone bat
dying hugs"
I wondered why his dad had grounded him but reckoned there was only one
way for me to find out. I started out down the pier. I waved to Dave and
Gramps as they looked out at the surprisingly single me striding towards
them.
"Change of plan, Going to his house. See you all soon."
I winked and waved to them. I must have looked like I had won a lottery
I was so happy. They smiled and waved back, mouthing 'Good luck' to me.
Happy? I was over the moon!
As I cycled towards the other side of town, towards Matt's house, I
started wondering about the best way of approaching his dad. Thinking I
needed a second opinion on this, I looked at the spider who was riding a
tandem beside me. The four legs peddling were fine and so were the two
steering, but the other two were bandaged, as was his head. I knew I
recognised him, he was the one I chatted to in the school library.
"Well what do you think then spider, how do I open a conversation with
Matt's dad?"
"Hmmm yes, hmmm tricky one that, let me see now, yes hmmm I think
that... hmmm, yes hmmm."
The spider casually chewed on a fly as he contemplated my dilemma, and
scratched his head with one of his injured legs.
"Hmmm yes now, yes what I would do is to errr hmmm yes, ask to see his
son, hmmm yes yes yes, ask if his son is home and don't tell him who you are
or how you come to know his son hmmm yes, that's what I would do hmmm yes."
"Will you role play me through this please?"
"Are you going to play the part of a teacher with a rolled up
newspaper and a bad attitude to spiders?"
"No."
"Then I will."
"Thanks... Hello Mr Ranger. Is Matt in?"
"No! Sorry." "Slams door in boys face. Do you want to try again?"
"Errr yes please." "Hello Mr Ranger, I've come to see Matt."
"Have you?................................"
"Yes..."
"Oh... "
"Well?"
"Not really I have two broken legs and the mother of all headaches. My
web was destroyed by a vacuum cleaner and I know that if I marry and have
children my wife will eat me immediately after we've had sex. Still, mustn't
grumble eh. How about yourself?"
"You're not very good at this role playing game are you?"
"Have you ever met a spider who is?"
I never got the chance to answer him. He melted away as we, or at least
I, reached the house. The address of Master Matt Ranger. I looked up at one
of the front windows upstairs and could just about see him, the side of his
face I thought. I reckoned he must have been sitting at his computer. He
wasn't looking out and he wasn't expecting me so why would he. I knocked.
Roy Ranger answered the door almost immediately, so quickly in fact it
took me by surprise and quite wrong footed me. His attitude however was
something else and nothing like I expected.
"Hello hello oh hello. You just HAVE to be Chris. Good heavens you
are better looking than even your photograph makes you out to be. Now come
in, come in, come in. No don't leave your bike outside or it won't be there
when you leave, bring it in the hall."
I wheeled my bike in and leaned it against the wall. It looked like
other bikes were rested there as a matter of course. I was of course
delighted at the welcome it put me at my ease far more but I was a bit taken
aback by the comment 'better looking than my pic' and I think Mr Ranger
sensed this.
"Oh dear oh dear oh dear, I think I've embarrassed you, I'm so so
sorry. Let me explain. Mathew showed me the photograph you sent him and we
both agreed you were a fine looking boy. Mathews gay you see, but he doesn't
know that I know this. Between you and me so am I but he doesn't know that
either."
"Can I go up and see him please, I cant wait to meet him."
"Oh dear oh dear, yes now, that is a little tricky. I'm afraid that
this morning I discovered that he has been rather disobedient to me and I
have grounded him. Then he told me that he was going to meet you. I had to
tell him 'Oh no he was not!' He is upstairs now waiting for you to log on
your computer so he can explain why he wasn't at the pier.
"Look, I can't not let you see each other but I have to do the Father
thing, so what about this. You sit down here and I will go up and give him a
bit of a talking too. Give me five minutes and I will come down and you can
go up and see him. That works for me, how about you?"
I nodded in agreement. I would have agreed to just about anything by
this time, all I wanted to do was see Matt. My Matt. Suddenly I realised
that Roy was talking to me again.
"Would you prefer Coke or Dr Pepper?"
I opted for Coke and he came in with three cans. He handed me mine
un-opened then opened the other two.
"Damn, Matt wanted Dr Pepper. Chris, would you mind having one of these
and I'll get a Pepper out of the fridge for Matt. Is that OK?
I said yes it was fine and Roy went back in the kitchen to the fridge.
He was back in a moment handing me my Coke and taking his Coke and Matt's
Pepper.
"I promise I'll be no more than five minutes with him. Sorry but this
has to be done my way. When you have children you will understand."
Five minutes is an eternity at times and this was one of those times.
As I drank my Coke I looked at the two computer terminals on the table. One
was a laptop the other a desktop. Something was odd, they were both on-line
at the same time. Now I'm no wizard when it comes to computers but these
didn't seem to be linked together. I finished my Coke and put the empty can
in the waste paper basket.
Looking at the screens I was confused. One was logged on under the name
Luke, the other, the laptop was under Marcus and Jonathans login. I was
confused. The other thing that was odd was that I was feeling really light
headed, almost sort of drunk. I didn't feel at all well.
"Now then now then now then. You relax you sweet cherub. Uncle Roy
will look after you. That's what Uncle Roy is good at."
I looked up into Roy's eyes, I was lying on his lap in a large
armchair in the living room. I had no recollection of getting there. I tried
to move a bit but I had lost all co-ordination of my limbs and Roy just
gently but firmly held me in place. In his lap. His naked lap, he was
holding my naked body onto his naked lap. I saw my clothes tossed carelessly
to one side.
"Where's Matt?"
"Oh silly silly boy. I'm Matt. Haven't you worked that out yet!"
I was slipping in and out of consciousness Each time I awoke it
seemed that Roy was doing something unspeakable to me yet I had no
recollections of the previous awakening. Then things happened that I would
remember. Things I would remember for the rest of my life.
First there was the crash. It sounded like a bus had driven into the
front of the house. It was in fact the front door caving in under the force
of an Australian member of the 'Leisure Marine Protection Services' Dave vs
Door. No contest. Then came the shouting, so much shouting and swearing.
Next thing I knew I was being wrapped in a blanket and then almost
immediately after that I was wrapped in a Mercedes and then in a Mike. I
was vaguely aware of the three pier guards physically explaining to Roy the
error of his ways when Murky spoke up.
That's enough guys, let the police have him now. She walked over to
Roy's phone and using gloved hands she reconnected the phone and called the
police. Dave was looking into my eyes but I was fading in and out.
"What do you reckon guys, Rohypnol?? Its gotta be something like that,
poor kid, I wonder how the bastard got it into him."
The Police came and soon after, the ambulance arrived for me. The last
image of the place I had was of the police taking out a window sized photo
of a blonde haired boy sitting at a computer, side view. It was a picture of
Matt, who ever he was.
I was held in hospital for only a couple of days, though I will have to
go back there for blood tests later on, just to be on the safe side.
Visitors I had a plenty, It was frightening just how many people came in
from School. Often saying how they had been tempted to go see someone who
they had met in a chat room. Don't get me wrong, it can be done, but it has
to be done right if it's going to be done at all.
I was handed the local paper the following day, the headlines blazing
out "De-frocked priest lures boy to house." When I read the article, it told
of how 'Australian hero rescues friend' and there was a nice reference to
Murky and Mike's part. It was Murky's dad who really highlighted the
deception.
When she told her dad everything that was happening and that she was
worried about it, he made her go through the whole story in great detail. He
laughed when she told him all the people involved especially Matt, Marcus,
Luke and Jonathan, and when put like that he recalled the rumours of an ex
priest moving into the area. Now he wasn't laughing Ex priests are rare,
very rare. Murky rushed to the pier to warn me that it might be a wind up.
Dave told her I had gone to the house, two and two were put together and the
rest is, as they say, History.
Well here I am. I still have the photograph of the boy who was too good
to be true, and a sore bum. I started to write out a code of conduct for
meeting people who I get to know from the internet but it got so it looked
like a set of instructions from my mum so I'm damned if I'm going to publish
it. Maybe I'll get the whole of our group to bang something together.
Needless to say everybody in Codgers Corner are rushing about shouting 'We
told you so' still, what do they know eh?
No, I know the real weakness in the system that nearly cost me my life.
Spiders are fucking useless at Role Play.
