CHAPTER 7

Lallo began to meet with Dario more and more often. They both very much
liked making love with each other so in the end they decided to become a
couple.

Dario said him, "If you and I are to be a steady couple, we have to stop
having sex with others. Do you agree?"

"That's good for me. If we carry on making love in this way, I don't
need any other man for sure."

But Lallo continued to live with his family. So as not to disturb
Gustavo too much, they mainly made love during the day time, trying to
reconcile Lallo's work shifts and Dario's rehearsals. At times Gustavo
went to sleep at Luca's place to let them have the flat all the night
long. At any event, Dario changed his bed and bought a queen size one to
be more comfortable when making love with Lallo. They always united with
passion, impetuosity and enthusiasm. The eroticism of the one lighted,
stirred up, inflamed and exhalted the eroticism of the other.

The band accepted Lallo without problems and Tania also treated him with
sincere friendship. Lallo was likeable and friendly towards all the
band's members so that everybody was fond of him.

The Jazz Italy Tour had started and they were one of the twenty selected
bands. As the weeks were passing, the Mad Boys reached the first place
in the temporary hit parade, together with the bands of Campania, of
Molise and of Sardinia.

When Lallo was able to get leave from work, he followed them on their
away matches. In that case they booked three double rooms, one for
Marcello and Tania, one for Dario and Lallo, and one for Gustavo and
Luca, the two "bachelors". Roberta always had a single room as she never
travelled together with her boyfriend.

A problem arose when Gustavo got a steady girlfriend, Letizia. It was
Luca who solved it as, always considerate, he offered his flat to the
couple and moved to Dario's flat in Gustavo's place.

The band was in transit to Naples when an unpleasant situation arose..
Before the match-performance with the local band, the Mad Boys had been
invited at a party in a villa at Pagani, on the outskirts of Naples. The
owner of the villa was an influential local politician, a senator, a man
of forty-eight, good-looking, brilliant, elegant.

At one point the man invited the four boys into his studio, not calling
Roberta. He made them sit down and offered some drinks.

"Well, my friends. I see you have the second place on the chart, you are
going very well. Our band here is for the moment in first place, just
one mark above you. If at the next match you are the winners, you will
be the in first place, if you lose, the third..."

"We will do our best to win, don't doubt it." Luca said, smiling.

"Yes, sure, I don't doubt it. But, you see, I am keen on having our band
win. And you are the most serious hindrance, the strongest impediment.
Thus, I thought... I have here five generous cheques, very generous...
if you accept them..."

"Then what?" Marcello asked belligerantly.

"Then what? But it is evident, isn't it? You just play a little less
well than usual, and so..."

"Are you joking?" Luca asked severely.

"No, boys, I've never been more serious. And if you don't accept,
besides not getting the cheques... you know, an accident can always
happen... it would really be regrettable, wouldn't it, boys? A boy nice
like you, for instance... you are called Curley, aren't you? And you
fuck with that little blondie, right?"

"What's the matter with that?" Gustavo asked combatively.

"Nothing, nothing. It is just to show you that I know you all very well.
I can understand you, Curley... I too like nice boys, for sure. Handsome
boys are my weak point. And the boys of our band, how shall I put it,
have been able to handle me in the right way... They applied themselves
so much to... to 'play' for me... in private, you see... Thus I just had
to promise them I would make them the winners. They are always so kind
and available to me, so I have to be the same to them, don't I? They are
good both on stage and in bed, believe me. Oh, gosh, you are well built
too... thus... if you decided to be gentle and available to me, in that
case the match could go on without problems... and in that case... may
the best band win!"

"You mean we should go to bed with you?" Gustavo asked, unbelieving.

"Just so. All together or one at a time, that's not important.
Especially you, Luca is your name, right? I like you. And you too,
Curley. But also Gus, that's you, right? And Marcello... only the girl,
Roberta, she really doesn't appeal to me, that's why I didn't call her
here. You see I'm a kind person, am I not? I offer you three
possibilities: the money and you lose the match, to bed with me and may
the best band win, or else... Come on, don't make those faces, boys. We
are wordly people aren't we? Look, I'll give you three hours time to
make a decision. Another drink, boys?"

"Our answer is no anyway!" Luca said decidedly.

"Come on! You cannot decide for all the band, can you? You have to
discuss, to talk amongst yourselves, to weigh the pros and cons... Look,
I'll leave the cheques here, to help you to decide. And I'll leave you
here for your discussion. Come back to the hall when you want... But in
three hours I have to get the definitive answer, is it clear? And
remember, I am a man of my word - the money, or the bed, or an
accident..." the man said with a winning smile and went out of the room.

The four boys looked at each other for a moment, unbelieving.

"That man is crazy!" Luca said. "Anyway for me the answer is no!"

"We could take the money... And even if we lose this match we can easily
recover; after all we are just at two thirds of the Tour, right?"
Marcello proposed.

"No, it's too risky. No, we have to win, we can do it. But an
accident... He was not joking. I think I would rather be fucked by that
pig..." Gustavo murmured.

Luca then looked at Dario, "This leaves the final choice to you, Curley.
We three have each chosen a different answer, therefore it is up to you
to decide and tip the scales in favor of one solution or another."

"To me? Even if I choose one of the three solutions, it would anyway be
two of four. The decision has to be at least of three, and even better
all five in agreement, because Roby is involved in this mess, even
though the pig left her out."

"Yes, you are right. But anyway, what do you think?" Luca asked.

"I... taking the money and losing... no! I would feel... I don't know,
but I don't at all like selling myself. About fucking with that one... I
never fucked with somebody who tried to force me. I never had sex in
exchange for something, not even with somebody wonderful. It is true
that then the match would be fair, but... Good Lord, I'm disgusted just
at the thought. But anyway making a fair match, possibly also losing,
but then having to suffer the revenge of that pig..."

"No, if we lose, he would let us in peace..." Gustavo said.

"Yes, but losing and not even getting the money, would be stupid."
Marcello retorted.

"The fact is that we will win," Dario said, decidedly. "I anyway would
rather try to win and take the risk."

Luca approved with his glance.

"But we are only two to think so." Dario added. "We also have to ask
Roby. She is taking a risk like us."

"That fucked-up, shitty turd!" Gustavo exclaimed. "He could possibly
like being screwed in the ass and I would hammer in it with real
pleasure!"

"Yeah, but possibly he likes to fuck asses. Would you also like to take
it up your ass with the same pleasure?" Marcello asked dryly.

"No, surely not. Not from him, anyway."

"I bet that his band is first only because the turd already did his
little dirty game with the other bands as well." Luca said.

"But they are good anyway." Dario made them notice.

"Yes, to whore around!" Marcello retorted.

"Shit, we are not deciding, with this chit-chat!" Luca observed, upset.

Dario then asked, "You, Gus, would you really let that pig fuck you?"

"Well, no... I don't think so."

"So then, what do you choose? Money or risk?"

"I... to risk, I think."

"Well, so we now are three!" Luca said, satisfied.

"No, it's not enough. We can't have Marce and Roby take the risk if they
don't feel like taking it. And if Marce insists we have to take the
money, I vote for the money." Dario determined said.

"But... what the fucking hell are you saying? So we'll go over it all
again..." Luca said, vexed.

Marcello was thoughtful. Then he went to the desk, and took the five
cheques.

"Don't you want to know the amount? It's high, very high..."

The others kept silent. Then Marcello tore the cheques in pieces and
gathered the pieces in his hand, "Let's go and give them back to him,
after all they belong to him." He said frowning.

The other three didn't have any manifestation of joy for their friend's
choice, they could feel there was nothing to rejoice over. They went
back to the hall. Marcello approached the house lord and handled him the
waste paper.

The man took it and put it in a pocket with a smile. "One less
possibility. Which of the other two have you choosen, then?" he quietly
asked.

Luca answered, "To win. But with our music instruments, not with our...
organs."

"I'm amazed. You, Curley, weren't able to persuade your mates? The three
hours have not yet elapsed and..."

"I? I totally agree with them. I feel like being a musician, not a
slut."

"Ho ho, the boy with a pure heart! The Good Knight Without Fear and
Without Reproach! Well, boys, you asked for it... It's for me to lay
down the law in this area, you will soon discover that," the man said
leaving the four boys.

Dario then looked at his mates, "Bring Roby, Tania, Lallo and Letizia
here immediately. Hurry up!"

"But..."

"Hurry up! And without attracting attention. Go! I'll look for Steno. We
will meet there, near the piano."

His friends looked at him with an interrogative air but complied. Dario
looked for their manager and found him talking with a woman.

"Steno, sorry, but I urgently need to talk with you."

"Forgive me, baroness... What's the matter, Nocera?"

"I will explain to you later, at the hotel. I will explain everything to
you. But now you have to come with me and to stay always near us,
anything may happen..."

"But, what's going on?" the man asked, worried about the gloomy and
tense air of Dario.

"It's too long to be explained here and now. Can you just trust me, for
the moment?"

"Yes... I think I can..."

When they all gathered near the piano, Dario took the microphone that a
singer had used just before for his Neapolitan songs. He blew on it and
asked, "Can you hear me?"

In the hall everybody suddenly became silent and turned to look towards
the group near the piano. Dario noticed the alarmed glance of the
senator.

With a smile and a merry voice, Dario said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I
want to take the occasion to thank all of you on behalf of the Mad Boys
for the splendid welcome you have given us. And above all the senator,
our exquisite amphitryon. We are the band opposing your regional band,
that's a fact, and that's why your warm welcome moves us."

Everybody gently applauded. Dario continued.

"It is clear, and logical, that you all support your band, the Angels.
Above all because their music deserves admiration, then also because, in
a way, they represent your wonderful city and region."

More applause.

"For a team, being supported in whatever competition is a big asset,.
Even if at times the enthusiasm can also go too far, as unhappily has
happened, and happens at times in the soccer stadiums..."

Murmurs of approval ran through the hall but Dario did not lose sight of
the senator. He continued.

"Or also how, unhappily, it happened in this hall just a few minutes
ago. One of you, in fact, told us in a very clear way that... we lose to
the Angels, or else we will face a regrettable accident."

A strong murmur arose from the hall. Dario continued, raising his voice.

"Now, if we will lose, it will for sure not be out of fear, but only if
the Angels will receive more votes than us, votes they will deserve. But
if on the contrary it would be us to win, well, that threat coming from
an important person, could become real..."

More loud murmurs underlined his words. Dario looked for a moment
towards Steno and saw he was rather pale. He then looked towards the
senator and saw he was smiling...

"Now, when a threat is proffered by a powerful person, the only thing to
do is to seek the protection of an even more powerful person..."

"Report it to the police!" somebody shouted.

Dario answered, "Without proof, a report for threats can provoke a
counter-report for defamation. And the person in question has of course
been shrewed and skilled enough to threaten us without witnesses and
without leaving proof. Therefore we now here ask for the protection of
our amphytrion, the Senator. We are certain that he is fully able to
guarantee our safety, preventing our involvement in any accident,
whether we win or the Angels win. Senator... will you grant us your
protection?"

The man for a moment looked at him dumbfounded, but immediately
collected himself and, with his usual smile, went to take the
microphone.

"Friends... our guests here have possibly misinterpreted the meaning of
what one of you, in the enthusiasm of a supporter, can have said them...
We Neapolitans, at times, are a little too emphatic, even bombastic, in
our expressions. We possibly say, we'll bump you off instead of we'll
defeat you!"

>From the hall some amused laughter arose.

"Anyway... anyway, in the unfortunate event that they could have
correctly understood, and also to soothe them so that they can compete
without worries, I certainly commit myself here in front of you all to
ensure that nothing unpleasant could happen to them."

Everybody applauded. The senator, still talking to the microphone but
turning towards the boys of the guest band, added, "You are amongst
friends, my boys. And, all we wish that... may the best band win! And
now let's amuse ourselves and end the evening in merriment!"

Everybody again applauded and the senator, putting down the microphone,
faced the boys. "Come on, I think you are way too tense...
impressionable. So, who threatened you?"

"Somebody you know fairly well, senator." Luca said serious, looking
straight in his eyes.

Steno intervened, "I know these boys fairly well. They are not the kind
to invent such a thing, and nor to get the wrong end of the stick,
senator, I can assure you."

"God forbid, god forbid, I was not meaning that. No, they simply could
have misunderstood, they simply..."

"No, senator. The speach was made to us with extreme clarity, not by
allusions." Marcello answered looking him up and down.

"Well, if you say so... But you could have told me in private,
anyway..."

"No. Doing as we did we have disclosed the bluff of our... enemy."
Gustavo answered.

"The matter is serious anyway." Steno said, "Corruption attempts... I
would even espect them. But threats! Senator, can you guarantee me that
nothing bad could happen to the boys? Otherwise I shall hire a team of
private guards..."

"No, no, you don't need to. Whoever threatened them, now that the matter
has become of public knowledge, and that I in person have committed
myself to protect them, would not make any false moves."

"Thank you, senator. I was sure we could rely on you." Dario said,
seraphic.

"Yes, yes, of course... But now stop worrying and just think of amusing
yourselves, boys. Nothing has to spoil the party in your honor..."

When the man left them, Steno asked, "But who did threaten you?"

"In the hotel, Steno. In the hotel we will explain you everything. But
never lose sight of us, please. And we eight should never part from each
other, for any reason. Understood?" Dario said.

"But... the senator committed himself..." Letizia said, visibly scared,
pressing against Gustavo.

"Curley's right. Let's always stay together, it's better." Luca said.
Then, resting a hand on Dario's arm, he whispered, "You were great,
man!"

"Wasn't I?" Dario said with a bitter smile.

Roberta asked, "But who should we beware of?"

"Of everybody, it's simpler. But inside here, at least I believe,
nothing will happen to us, especially if we don't lose sight of each
other." Gustavo said.

At the end of the evening, the eight boys were split in two groups and
one went back to the hotel in the car driven by Steno and the other was
accompanied personally by the senator. The man, along the way,
confidently talked of this and that as if nothing had happened.

They entered the hotel. After a while Steno and the others also
arrived.

"So? Luca and Gus didn't want to tell me anything on the road. Would you
please explain me, at last?" Steno asked.

"Let's go upstairs to one of the bedrooms..." Luca answered.

Once there, they told the speechless Steno and Lallo, Letizia, Tania and
Roberta all that had happened.

"Oh, fucking hell, Nocera! You did the best thing. That filthy pig...
You, Marcello, would have done better if you still had the pieces of his
cheques... They would have been proof..."

"No, it's alright so, Steno. And if by chance we lose, I think that
really nothing will happen to us..." Roberta said.

"On the contrary. In my opinion we have much more to fear if we lose. He
could decide to take his revenge, and he would also have an alibi." Luca
made her realise.

"Well, then we shall win! Right, boys?" Dario said, with forced
light-heartedness.

Steno nodded, then said, "Anyway I would feel safer if you had a
bodyguard for the days we have still to spend here in Naples. I'll call
a vigilantes agency immediately..."

"And who can assure you it is not controlled by the senator?" Roberta
objected.

"Right... Well, it will be more expensive, but I can pay for an escort
of state police. Four policemen for forty-eight hours..."

"Just two could be enough..." Luca said.

"No, I want four of them. Now I 'll call a friend of mine here in
Naples. If I'm not wrong, he's a cousin of the prefect. He can help us."

"You, Steno, have an influential friend in every town!" Gustavo said,
laughing.

"Yes, and fortunately for you, this time," the man said.

They got the escort. They performed for the match at the local TV. They
played their pieces, putting their hearts in it. But the Angels were
good too and moreover, they were playing at home. The Mad Boys won by a
hair's breadth, but they still won.

The boys returned home without accident. When they got off the airplane,
a hostess approached them and asked, "You are the Mad Boys, aren't you?"

"Yes..."

"Well, this parcel is for you."

"From whom?"

"I don't know. It came yesterday with the flight from Naples."

Luca opened it. Inside there were five bill-clips, in gold, with a
spring, and an unsigned note, written by machine, saying, "You won
anyway. You are good players. Happily you are not my opponents in
politics. So I pay the forfeits."

"He is less bastard than I thought." Gustavo said turning the gold
object in his hands.

"On the contrary, he is more bastard than I thought. As he loses, he now
tries to recover his image. To seem harmless." Marcello said sharply,
putting the clip in his pocket.

"I almost feel like really entering politics..." Dario commented, giving
his clip to Lallo, "Here, take it. You ran a risk too, being with me."
