	The sun was just starting to come up as
Matthew finished his newspaper deliveries for the
day and was headed home on his bicycle.  He was an
ambitious youngster.  His goal was to buy himself a
car by the time he reached sixteen.  He was willing to
deliver papers seven days a week to reach his goal.
By the time he finished delivering papers he was
almost always late to school.  As a result of his
tardiness he collected so many detention slips he
would have been 25 by the time he worked them off.

	There was only one councilor, named Malcolm,
that didn't assume he was a delinquent.  He had been
very much like Mat when he was in school.  He had
just managed to graduate from high school himself.
It was not until he had had worked at meaningless
manual jobs that he began to appreciate getting a
education so that he could find a job that didn't
require back breaking labor for little reward.  He got
a degree in electrical engineering and got a job
working on naval weapons systems.  When they
developed a new electronics system he was the one
that installed them and did the sea trials.  The
problem with working for a corporation is that any
patens filed belong to the company regardless of who
invented them.  The profits are divvied up between
stockholders and general managers.

	Malcolm soon figured out that most weapons
electronics can be reconfigured for peaceful uses.
Like the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) which has

	As a councilor he could see to it that good
athletes could get into good colleges and try to

When he was given Matthew as one of his projects he
called him into his office to find out what kind of

	It did not take long for him to find out that
Mat's desire to pay for his first car was the driving
force in his life.  The youth was getting up by 5:00
a.m. every morning to fold and bag the papers before
delivering them.  It was no wonder he was late to

if he was interested in working in a speed shop he

rods.  After school Malcolm drove him to the shop

	While the owner showed him the shop they
talked about the engines they were working on.  Mat
impressed him with his knowledge not only of the
types of engines and additions to increase the

of reading because he could identify the components
and knew the additional power it would add to the

because he was moving to another state.  That made
an opening that allowed the owner to hire Mat as an
employee.

	That allowed Mat to quit his paper route.  He

time.  Malcolm made arrangements with the school to
allow Mat to arrange his class schedule so that he
could skip physical education and get to his job by
noon.

	It was not long before Mat was allowed to stay
at Malcolm's home on weekends because it was closer
to the speed shop but as soon as he got home from
work on Fridays the two of them would bath or
shower together to wash off the machine oil or other
engine oil and dust before Malcolm would take the
youth to bed.

the shop agreed with him and they started setting it
up.

	While that was going on he was helping the
welder block up a frame for a 32 Ford Duce.  Again

a solid drop axel over newer independent suspension.
They let him block in all of the fuel and brake lines on
the frame and weld the motor mounts.  He was
impressed with the way that car was coming
together.  They hooked it to a four speed
transmission.  They assembled a pos-a-traction quick
change rear end and allowed him to cut and balance
the driveline.  They mocked up the exhaust system
before taking it apart to have the frame color
coated.

	Mat was getting fascinated with the car it was
looking like his dream hot rod.  He wanted to know
what the body was going to look like.  Again while
they discussed the kind of rod it should be they sat
around the shop late one evening and argued about
the merits of a 3 window Duce, 5 window Duce, High
Boy Roadster or Low Boy Roadster, finders or no
finders.  Mat favored a Low Boy Roadster with out
finders and a cut down Duce grill.

	When the body was delivered it was a rusty 32
roadster.  The oak supports were rotted out.  They
set about cleaning off the rust and they had Mat set
about replacing rusted out parts with sheet metal and
filling in Bullitt holes.  They had him use templates to
cut out new oak supports.

	All of the work was being done when they were
not working on customer's cars.  Most of it was being
done by Mat.  He was leaning all of the jobs to make

taking the body off.

	Mat was spending his weekends dividing his time
between using body filler to smooth out the body and
insure the doors fit correctly.  The hinges on the
stock Duce would have been on the outside but they
wanted the body to be smoother so the hinges were
hidden.  The dash was left stock but they had agreed
on mounting modern instrumentation designed to fit
the center mount dash.  The rest of his time was
spent welding the headers each side would be a four
into one that would pass under the car and up and
over the rear axel.  When it was welded up cleanly it
was sent out to be chrome plated.  The Duce grill had
been cut and mounted so that the top would be the
same height as the top of the firewall.  They built a
water reservoir for the radiator made to fit the grill
and give the motor all of the cooling water it would
need.  While the body and radiator grill shell were
out be painted the same Fire-engine red as the frame
they started getting the frame ready with the
completed engine.

	They mounted the headlights to the frame and
did so with the wiring hidden inside the frame.  The
tail lights were the last detail.  Most rods used tear
drops, round ones or 40 Ford chevrons.  Mat felt
horizontal six inch rectangles would look better.

	There was a lot of discussion about wheels and
rims to use.  Again Mat wanted to go old-school and
they chose reversed rimes.  They were painted red
and chrome beauty rings and Baby Moons were fitted
on them.  The rims were 15-inch in front and 17-inch
in the read.  They mounted 15-225 whitewalls in front
and 17-G750 whitewalls in the rear.  With the tires
and drop axel the car had a good rake.  When they
put the painted body on the frame they sent the car
to the appositely shop.

	Mat was sent along to help so that he had his
hands on the cutting of plywood and mocking up the
foam rubber for the interior.  They were putting in a
rap-around bench seat.  They tried to convince him to
use natural tan leather with sculpted door panels but
he wanted old fashioned tuck-n-roll.  They went with
a white leather with red.  The bench seat was divided
by padded red leather and the centers were white
tuck-n-roll.  The doors followed the same look.  The
trunk matched the interior.  The gas tank was custom
made to hide under the trunk.

	Roasters don't have roll up windows so they built
a Carson stile top with oak ribs and a glass rear
window.  When it was mounted to the body they had
to install side curtains that mounted to the doors.
The windshield had been cut down at least 3-inches
before it was chromed.  The car was completed just
before Matthew turned 16 and a car show.  When it
was ready they allowed Mat to drive the truck that
hauled the car to the car show.

	Malcolm was there for the show with all of the
guys from the shop.  Mat didn't care if the car got
any trophies or not.  As far as he was concerned it
was the most beautiful roasters there.  If they would
have allowed him, he would have slept next to the car
all weekend.  When the awards were announced the
red roaster collected best roaster and best in show.
When the owner of the shop went up to receive the
trophies he insisted on the build team to join him.  He
acknowledged that the car had been the dream car of
Matthew and then he handed Mat the key to the car.

	Mat could not believe the car was his.  He was in
heaven the rest of the weekend.  He could not thank
everyone enough.  He hardly even noticed the people
that were congratulating him as he went to the car

built not only the way he had wanted it but it had

Carson top was attached the only thing that would fit
in the trunk was the two side curtains.

	Mathew would have slept with the car if it were

	He found out that Malcolm had arranged for
the payment for all of the parts.  They shop staff
had been on getting out of Mat what he would like his
dream rod to look like.  That night when they got
home Matthew was only too happy to drape his naked
