Chapter 37 - My Son and His Friends

I have to tell you that about an hour into the trip, I honestly began to
question my sanity. Jay was on one of his tears and was argumentative with
everybody about any and everything. I moved him to the front seat and
moved Ryan to the second row of seats. I finally got him settled and
everybody else was playing games or listening to music on their phone, iPad
or iPods. Rob asked me if I knew about a state park in a little town that
had a strange name, he said he thought it began with the word little. Jay
turned around and said that there was not a state park in Georgia that
began with the word little. Rob said there was, and for about ten minutes
they were back to arguing. I finally pulled over and threatened them
within an inch of their lives. I looked up the listing of Georgia State
Parks and sure enough, there was one in McRae, Georgia called Little
Ocmulgee State Park. It was about a fifty minute drive out of our way, so
I said we would look into it and see what we could do on another day. Rob
was happy, but Jay didn't want to have anything to do with it, imagine
that!

We stopped, took a bathroom break and made some sandwiches at one of the
rest areas along the interstate. Jay pleaded with me to let him move to
the second seat, but I held my ground. He acted mad, but he really enjoyed
being the co-pilot. As we continued to travel east, he tried to guess
where we were and took over monitoring the GPS.

We finally came to where Interstate 16 and Interstate 95 intersect. I
continued on Interstate 16 until I was able to get on 516. I then drove on
516 and took an off ramp to 80. The boys put their phones down and began
to look around. Ryan was the first to complain as he did not see anything
fun to do. I didn't say anything. Jay said "Well, this is probably Pop's
idea of an educational vacation, huh Pops?" I smiled and didn't respond.
I heard Ryan huff and puff. He started in with "I told you that we wanted
to go to Disney World, but you didn't listen." Finally, I had enough and
said "Ryan, one more word and we will go to our hotel and spend every
minute of our vacation sitting in the room with no TV or any outside
entertainment. Your choice; do as I have planned, or go to the hotel?" He
exhaled loudly and said "Do as you have planned, you always win."

I drove on and soon, we were on Tybee Island. I followed the signs to the
Tybee Lighthouse and parked. Ryan started again "A lighthouse, Wow! A
freaking lighthouse- okay, I've seen it, now let's do something fun." I
turned around and glared at him. Rob said "Ryan, you are being an ass."
Myles agreed, and that really made Ryan madder. We got out and walked
around the area. We walked to the gift shop, and I paid for our admission
to the lighthouse. We walked into the lighthouse, and as we entered, a
voice yelled "Ryan and Rob!" The boys turned and looked across the room.
The owner of the voice came running over and hugged a stunned Rob and Ryan.
Myles and Jay looked on, and finally Jay said "We're not worthy of a hug?"
The boy turned to Jay and hugged him then looked at Myles and said "Myles?"
Myles said "Yes, it's me." Ryan finally found his wits and called me over.
He said "Dad, do you remember Blake from down the street? We used to play
together in the park, and he visited our house several times. I said "Yes,
good to see you Blake." He said "Mr. Brunson, my Mom and Dad are over
there with my brother Joey. Joey broke his leg and is in a wheelchair."

I walked over and joined his parents while the boys huddled around Joey.
As I talked to the parents, I learned that they had moved to Jacksonville,
Florida and that both boys had taken an interest in the history of the area
after touring St. Augustine. Blake's dad asked how I managed to have the
four boys. I explained that it was just something that had occurred over
the years. He said "I recognized three of them, but the fourth looked a
little familiar, however his hair color has changed." I said "Yes, that is
Myles, and his hair color started changing last fall from a dark blond to
being almost black, but believe me, he is the same boy." Blake was excited
to see the boys and soon had them excited about the lighthouse. He took
them on a tour of the lighthouse and the surrounding buildings while I
continued to talk to his parents.

In a few minutes, the boys returned excited and told me to listen to Blake.
Blake began to tell me about an old fort that was located nearby. He told
me that his family was going there next. The boys, then pleaded with me to
let's go with them. I smiled and agreed as that had been on my agenda as
well. We all loaded up in our vehicles and drove over together to view and
experience Fort Pulaski.

We drove into the parking lot and parked, unloaded and assembled together
to enter the fort. We crossed over the moat using two drawbridges, paid
our admission and then, wandered some of the exhibits, rooms, and buildings
at the fort. It was amazing to see the old guns, the rooms that they used
to store their supplies, the officer quarters, and the general outlay of
the fort. I pulled the boys together, and we found information that stated
that wooden pilings were sunk up to 70 feet into the mud to support an
estimated 25,000,000 bricks. Fort Pulaski was completed in 1847 following
eighteen years of construction and nearly $1 million in construction costs.
The walls are eleven feet thick. The boys were stunned at the fact that
people in that day and time could build something that was so strong and
not use today's modern machinery. There was a lot more that we learned
regarding that time in the history of the United States. The area of the
fort and surrounding areas are absolutely beautiful and the brick fort
sitting in the grassy area surrounded by the moat is breathtaking. Blake
told us that there was another fort nearby and that its name was old Fort
Jackson and then, another one on St. Simon's Island near Brunswick called
Fort Fredericka. He told us that his family had traveled to St. Simons
Island yesterday, now they were doing the historical areas around Savannah
and Charleston, then they would finish later in the week with a tour of
Colonial Williamsburg.

Blake's talk and enthusiasm fueled the interest of the boys. They were
interested in some of the other areas; however we did not go to Fort
Jackson. We assembled just inside the fort, said our good-byes, and
promised to keep in touch over the next few years.

We left the fort and I drove back to Savannah, found our hotel, checked in,
and unloaded the Denali. Our rooms were just what I had requested; two
adjoining rooms with two queen sized beds in each room. I assigned the
boys to their room and had them unpack their clothing. I opened the door
to my room and did the same thing. I walked over to their room and found
that they had decided that Ryan and Myles would share a bed while Jay and
Rob would share the other one. I checked the bathroom and discovered that
we would need more towels and bath cloths. I called housekeeping and they
told me that they would deliver them within an hour.

I looked at my phone and noted that it was getting close to six o'clock. I
told the boys to load up as we were going to make a quick tour and find
something to eat. We walked down to the Denali, and I drove to the old
historical section of Savannah. I had to drive up and down Bay Street a
few times before I was able to find a parking place. We were able to park
in a lot near City Hall. We had to walk to find an easement and steps to
get down to the river front. We found the stairs and started down however,
we had to give a group of people coming up room to walk by us. The food
smelled fantastic, and the music filled the air either from live musicians
or from speakers inside the buildings. The boys were taken aback by the
appearance of the old buildings, as they are used to modern architecture.
I explained and showed them that Savannah has many beautiful and grand old
buildings in many different architectural styles. I called their attention
to the drains and some of the metalwork on the buildings. We walked along
the sidewalks and drifted in and out of several stores. They were ready to
buy some things, but I told them to wait until we had seen Savannah and
that we would come back and make some choices. As we were walking, I
noticed a large ship coming in the distance so I walked the boys across the
street so that they could get a close-up view as it passed. The ship made
good time traveling to us and it was a very large container ship. We
returned across the street and continued to shop until we came across the
Shrimp Factory which is the restaurant that I had chosen for tonight's
dinner.

We went in and were promptly seated. Our waiter welcomed us and reviewed
the evening's specials with his attention directed to me. I smiled as I
knew what he was thinking. He then said "While you are thinking about your
choice, sir, I will take the drink orders." He said "Young men, what would
you be interested in drinking tonight?" Each one said "Sweet tea" and I
agreed with their choice. He looked back at me, and I could tell that he
was puzzled that they had chosen tea over soft drinks; however he carried
on with getting our drinks while we studied the menu. I decided to order
two appetizers, fried calamari, and coconut shrimp for the group to try
while we waited for our food. The waiter brought our drinks and I placed
the order for the appetizers after telling him that we needed more time to
study the menu. Again, he looked puzzled, but he didn't say anything.

Our waiter returned and asked me what I had chosen for the evening. I said
"If you don't mind, please start with the boys as I want to hear their
choices." He walked around to Rob who ordered shrimp scampi, Myles ordered
shrimp Alfredo, Jay ordered a New York Strip medium rare, and then he was
waiting for Ryan to decide. Ryan looked at me and asked what I was
ordering. I said "I think I am going to try the shrimp and crab au
gratin." Ryan looked at the menu again, and said "That is what I want."
The waiter took our menus and went to place our orders. Our appetizers
were delivered so we tried them and drank our tea.

As we waited for our entrees, they began to make our Caesar salad at our
tables. Myles was interested in that and it occupied his attention for a
while. The waiter dished our salad for each one of us, and we began to eat
it. Soon several wait staff members brought our food to the tables and we
began to eat. I always encourage them to try different foods, so we
sampled each other's food and they really like everything that they tried.
The waiter checked back on us several times making sure that he kept our
glasses filled with sweet tea. He returned as we were finishing our meal
and asked if we wanted desserts. I looked around the table and everyone
shook their heads no. I told him that we would pass tonight, but the
listing sure did sound good. He said that he would go and finalize our
bill. He returned with the bill and I paid for our meal. He thanked us
and told us that he had truly enjoyed waiting on us and he complimented the
boys on their behavior and their choices.

We returned to the Denali and I drove back to the hotel. I parked and we
went to our rooms. The boys started their showers as Housekeeping had
brought the extra towels to the room. I sat down and began to review some
of the pamphlets that I had picked up regarding the sights and events in
and around Savannah. Ryan came in and sat on the bed with me. I looked up
and he said "Dad, I apologize for being an ass, I am so sorry, but I really
wanted to go to Disney World. I see that there is a lot to learn here, and
I am sure that you have planned a great trip for us." I said "Ryan, I
understand your desire to go to Disney World, but I wanted us to spend some
time learning and experiencing some of our state's and nation's history."
He picked up several of the pamphlets and began to glance through them. He
was particularly interested in one of the ghost tours. I promised him that
I would try to work our schedule so that we could do that tour. He smiled,
got up and returned to his room. The showers continued and then, I heard
the TV go on and they started arguing as to what movie they were going to
watch. I walked to the door and told them that they could watch something
on my TV, so Rob got up and joined me in my room while Ryan and Myles
played some game on their phones.

Around ten o'clock, I told the boys that it was time to go to bed as we had
an early morning ahead of us. They turned the TVs off and got into bed. I
closed the door slightly and took my shower. I was about to get in bed
when I heard a commotion from the boy's room. I walked to the door and
looked in. Ryan and Jay were naked, hard and having a cock fight. Rob and
Myles were cheering them on. I looked at them, shook my head, and closed
the door. As I lay down, I thought about how they had matured and how
masculine they looked regardless of their age. I was particularly proud of
Ryan's equipment. I drifted off to sleep as the noise next door calmed
down.

I woke up the next morning and found that Rob had joined me in my room. I
woke him, and he said that he had to come over as Jay was too restless. I
smiled and told him to go wake the others up and tell them to get dressed
for the day. I suggested that they all bring a light jacket and to dress
so that they could adjust as the day warmed up. He left the room and soon,
I heard the boys talking in their room. I took my morning shower and
dressed for the day. I opened the door and checked on the boys. They were
in various stages of dress, and I told them to hurry up as we needed to do
a quick breakfast and then, go into town. We went downstairs and checked
out the free Continental breakfast that the hotel offered. We made a few
choices and sat in the dining area. After finishing a quick breakfast, we
washed our hands, and loaded up. I drove to the Savannah History Museum
and Visitor's Center and parked. We toured the building and gift shoppe.
We purchased our trolley tickets for a tour around Savannah. We boarded
the trolley, and soon we were touring the historic district of Savannah.
The trolley operator was very informative and told us a lot about the
history of the area. He stated that there are 24 squares in the district,
and each one has a story behind it. He pointed out a number of residences
and other buildings that were of significance to the history of Savannah.
The boys listened to his talk and actually asked a few interesting
questions. We returned to where we began and made plans on how we would
cover the area on our own. I made a suggestion, and they agreed to it. We
walked the streets and read the plaques at the squares we passed.

Around ten forty-five, I worked our tour so that we were at Mrs. Wilkes'
Boarding House for lunch. We walked up and there was already a line so we
got in line. One of the workers came out and started counting the people
off in the line. She counted us and we were split. Ryan and Rob were in
the group ahead of us. I told them to follow along and everything would be
fine. Jay, Myles and I were in the next group. We walked in and were
seated at a table with the people in our group of ten. We introduced
ourselves around the table, and the wait staff began to fill the table with
various meats, vegetables and breads. I explained to Jay and Myles that
this type of service was referred to as "family style." The food was
delicious, and we learned a lot about the people at our table. We finished
our meal and headed out. Ryan and Rob were waiting for us at the cash
register. I paid our bill in cash as they do not accept credit cards. The
boys told me that they really enjoyed both the food and the experience.

We began to walk down the street, and I gave the directions which would
take us to Forsyth Park. As we walked, we could hear someone playing a
saxophone. We walked down and entered the oak-covered entrance, and there
was the sax player with a small crowd around him. The boys pointed to the
huge fountain in the center. We walked down there and looked at it. The
water had been tinted green and it was squirting out of the swans' beaks.
The boys wanted to know why the water was green, so I told them that
tomorrow would be St. Patrick's Day and this was just one part of the
St. Patrick's Celebration. We walked back, and as luck would have it,
there were two benches open, so we sat down, talked and rested. I looked
over the map while they talked about stuff that they had seen. After about
thirty minutes, I opened my backpack and took out a Frisbee. I pointed
towards an open grassy area and told them to go have some fun. They took
the Frisbee and were off for about an hour.

The boys came back to the bench where I had remained and sat down. They
were tired and wanted to know what we were going to do the rest of the
afternoon. I took out the city map that we received when we bought our
trolley tickets and looked it over. I told the boys that we should walk
back towards the river and see some of the famous buildings or squares
along the way. We walked by the Temple Mickve Israel, but did not go in as
there was a fee for the tour, and I knew the boys would not enjoy it. We
continued and walked by the Andrew Low House where the founder of the Girl
Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low lived after marrying Andrew Low. She died in
that house after contracting cancer. We walked on over to the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist. We toured that Church after giving a small offering
and took a lot of pictures of the stained glass windows, the murals, the
altar, the ceiling, and other biblical representations and symbolism. I
took some time and pointed out some significant architectural features that
they would have in their upcoming World History class.

We finished our tour of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and then
continued our walk which took us by the Colonial Park Cemetery. We walked
in and looked at some of the headstones. I asked the boys to figure up the
ages of some of the people buried there. They were really amazed that many
of the people were not that old when they died. After that experience, we
walked on and passed by the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace. We found a
trolley stop, got on it and rode until the trolley passed the riverfront.
We got off at the riverfront and walked over to Emmet Park where we saw
statues and memorials to the Irish, the Lutherans, a local military unit as
well as the Harbor Light. We walked down to River Road and looked at the
Statue of the Waving Girl, the 1996 Olympic Yachting Cauldron, and the
African American Monument which lent itself to a discussion of slavery and
a reading of the inscription by Maya Angelou.

By that time, the boys were getting restless so we found the trolley stop
and waited for the next trolley to take us back to the Trolley Station. As
we rode the trolley back to the station, we saw that the city was becoming
crowded. I explained to the boys that the crowds were here to observe
St. Patrick's Day. We got off the trolley and put some of our stuff in the
Denali. We got back on one of the trolleys and headed to the Pirate's
House Restaurant for our evening meal. We arrived and walked over to the
entrance and requested a table for five. We were seated and handed our
menus. The waiter took our drink orders and as usual all of us ordered
sweet teas. The boys began to look at the menu and their eyes widened.
They whispered to me that the prices were high. I looked and said "They
are, but this is not something that we do all the time, so we are not going
to focus on the price, but the food and your appetite. They then began to
read the menu and made their decisions. The waiter returned and asked if
we needed help in making our choices. I looked at the boys and asked them
if they needed help. They said that they had pretty much settled on their
choices. The waiter began to take our orders with Ryan ordering Shrimp
Scampi, Jay ordering Chicken Jambalaya, Rob and Miles ordering Flounder
Belle Franklin, which I have to say sounded so good that I almost ordered
it too, but I opted for the Grouper Florentine. Our food was soon
delivered and it smelled so good that it heightened our senses and made our
mouths water. We ate and discussed some of what we had seen during the day
and Ryan mentioned that everybody was tired. We took about an hour and a
half to enjoy our meal. Afterwards, I suggested that we go down to the
waterfront and watch the crowds as I had signed us up for a Ghost Tour.

We watched some of the people who were dressed for the Pre-St. Patrick's
Day Celebrations for about thirty minutes, and then we began to walk
through several stores on River Street. As we looked at the merchandise in
the stores, the boys made note of what they wanted to buy before we left
Savannah. As I watched the boys, I began to think that my plan of going on
the ghost tour might not have been the greatest idea as they were tiring
out, so I suggested that we find a bench, sit, and watch the river traffic.
As we sat there looking out onto the river, there were a number of ships
and boats entering and leaving the area. We walked down the waterfront and
looked at two tugboats that were docked there. Ryan looked over at me and
said "Dad, how much longer until we go back to the hotel?" I looked at my
phone and said "We have about an hour to go before we start the ghost
tour." Jay said "Pops, if we have that much time to waste, can we go back
to the candy shop and buy some candy?" I said "Let's go." We entered one
of the candy shops and the selections boggled my mind. There were so many
different types of candies. The boys bought chocolate covered
strawberries, yogurt covered pretzels, chocolate covered cashews, and I
bought some divinity. We went back and sat on the bulkhead and ate our
candy.

At 9:15, we walked down River Street and gathered with our ghost tour
group. Our tour guide introduced himself as Nathan, and he gave us an
introduction to our tour. Nathan had a wonderful ability to tell stories
and was both knowledgeable and eager to share the stories and historical
facts that he had learned over the years. The boys took some pictures as
we toured Savannah, and Nathan told them that sometimes ghostly images
appeared in pictures even though they did see them when they took the
pictures. After ninety minutes of listening to stories and historical
facts, the tour ended. We began walk and used the map to make our way back
to the Denali.

We arrived at the Denali and for once, I didn't have to tell the boys to
get in and settle down. They loaded up as soon as I opened the doors.
They were quiet all the way back to the Hotel. I pulled into the parking
lot and we grabbed our purchases and went to our rooms. I unlocked the
doors and everybody threw their stuff down and started preparing for bed.
In a few minutes, the boys' room became extremely quiet. I walked over to
the adjoining door and looked into the room. Everybody was settled in bed
and their clothes were strung out around the room. I stepped back into my
room, and closed the door slightly. I walked into my bathroom, stripped
and stepped into the shower. I turned the shower on and adjusted the
temperature so that the water was rather hot and producing some steam. I
stood and enjoyed the pulsing of the shower head on my back and neck.
After about twenty minutes, I turned the water off, stepped out of the
shower, and dried off. I walked out of my room naked, turned off the
lights, and got into my bed. I think that as soon as my head hit the
pillows, I was asleep much like the boys.

Tuesday morning arrived sooner than I wanted. I woke up and looked around
the room and then, I looked at my phone. It was 7:15 and there were no
sounds coming from the boys' room. I lay there stretching and relaxing.
In about ten minutes, I decided to get up, and get dressed after taking my
morning shower. I straightened up my bed and reclined against the
headboard while I reviewed some of the other pamphlets that I had picked up
around town. I got up and walked to the doorway around 8:00 and woke the
boys up reminding them that they had to shower, get dressed, wear their
green shirt, and eat breakfast before we could go to the parade which would
start around 10:15. They looked at their clock, set up shower rotations,
showered, and dressed. They were ready by 8:30. We walked down to the
lobby and had a quick continental breakfast with orange juice. Myles
looked at me and asked "If it starts at 10:15, why are we going so early?"
I explained to him that this parade was a very big event and that there
would be about 300,000 people lining the route and we had to secure
ourselves a good spot. He was satisfied, and I saw that it also answered
the same question for Rob.

We loaded up and I drove towards downtown. It seems as though I was not
the only person who had that idea. We looked for a parking place and
finally, we found a parking garage that had some open spaces, but I had to
pay fifteen dollars to park. I parked, and we got out and headed to a spot
on the map that I had identified. We arrived and found that somebody had
beaten us to it, so we looked around and found an area that was open. We
set up our camp there.

We spent our time talking, with me asking them questions about some of the
stuff that we had seen yesterday, as well as, asking them questions about
what they would like to do this afternoon. As we talked, Ryan turned the
table on me and began to ask me questions about some of the things that we
had seen around Savannah. After a while, I began to outline our plans for
tomorrow. I told them that we would leave for Charleston in the afternoon,
but we would spend the morning doing some more touring around Savannah. I
explained to them that I would be talking to them about a book based in
Savannah "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" tonight, and we would
try to visit some of the places mentioned in the book tomorrow.

After spending a lot of time talking, and playing games on their phones, we
began to hear people around us saying that the parade was getting close.
We stepped out to the edge, so that people would not stand in front of us.
This parade is the second largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the United
States, and it runs about three and a half hours. We counted somewhere in
the neighborhood of twenty-eight bands, saw a large number of dignities and
local officials in antique and modern cars, large groups of organizations
representing various religious, civic, and Irish organizations. The
participants were all dressed with some shade of green and some were
wearing beads and other types of ornamentation. The boys became excited as
some people in the parade threw beads, candy, and stuffed items to the
crowds. We secured our share of beads.

After the parade was finished we began to walk with the crowds to the
Festival on River Street. It was hard to keep the boys together as people
walked around and between us as we tried to get to the Festival. Finally,
we made it to the Festival and it was extremely crowded. I told the boys
to meet me at the tugboats in an hour and half. I reminded them that there
would be some food for sale and they needed to eat something before we
returned to the hotel.

We met at the tugboats around three o'clock. I asked them if they had
bought everything that they had said they would buy as souvenirs or memory
items. They showed me their purchases and told me who would receive it.
We made our way to the Denali as I did not want them on the Waterfront
after dark. We got in and headed back to our hotel.

We arrived at the Hotel and took all of our purchases to our room. I told
the boys that we would relax in our rooms for about two hours then, we
would go out for pizza. They kicked off their shoes, turned on the TV,
crawled up on their beds and became very quiet. I could not believe how
quiet it was over there, so I walked to the doorway and checked on them.
They were spread across the beds and had fallen asleep. I had to smile as
I too, felt like a nap would be a good thing.

We were awakened when Jay woke up. He decided that he wanted company and
therefore, he turned the TV volume up. Everybody woke up, some grumpy and
rather angry at Jay, but they know how to deal with him. I told them to
get ready to eat, so we walked down to the ground level and walked over to
Pizza Hut which was close to the hotel. We walked in, were seated and gave
our drink orders. Everybody ordered a soft drink. We looked over the menu
and decided to get two large pizzas with a variety of toppings. We
finished our pizzas. I paid our bill and then, we returned to our room.

I told the boys that they could relax in their room for a while and then, I
wanted to talk to them about the book that I had mentioned earlier. I gave
them a quick overview of the story which I will condense even further in my
report on this event. I shared the following information with the boys
"The book is based on real-life events that occurred in the 1980s and
depicts a wide range of eccentric personalities in and around the city of
Savannah. The story centers on the killing of Danny Hansford, a local male
prostitute by Jim Williams, a respected antiques dealer. This resulted in
four murder trials, with the fourth ending in an acquittal after the judge
finally agreed to move the case away from the Savannah jury pool. The book
presents the killing as "self-defense", the result of a lovers' quarrel
between Hansford and Williams, and not murder, pre-meditated or otherwise
by Williams. The death occurred in Williams' home. The book highlights many
other notable Savannah residents, as well, including The Lady Chablis, a
transgender woman and local drag queen and entertainer."

I researched Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and made notes as to
where some of the events took place on the trolley map. I talked to the
boys about some of the locations as I shared the story with them. By the
time I had finished, they were eager to read the book or see the movie. I
reminded them of two facts. First, the authors often take some liberty in
retelling the story and second, that there will be a difference between
what was written in the book and what appears in the movie. Ryan asked if
we could rent and watch it. I told them that they could see if it was
available, and if so, I would rent it for them. They found it, and we
watched it.

After the movie ended, I had the boys go back to their room, gather their
dirty clothes, bag them up, and start shower rotations. I picked up my
phone and called Phil. I just needed to hear his voice. He answered on
the second ring, and we talked for over thirty minutes. I hung up with a
smile on my face and plans for Friday night formulating in my head. I
began to pull my stuff together and then, I heard Jay say "Hand me the
lube!" Ryan said "You aren't gonna do that in here with us are you?" Jay
replied "Yep, in fact I think we all will as we have not done anything for
relief since Saturday night." Ryan said "Jay, my dad is in the next room,
and he will hear us." Jay said "Ryan, you worry too much, Pops told us to
take care of this whenever we need to do it, and he said that we should not
feel ashamed." Rob said "Ryan, Jay is right and frankly I need to squirt
some juice or my balls are gonna pop." I smiled, as I listened to their
conversation.

After I had finished gathering my stuff, I checked on the boys, found that
everybody had finished their showers and they were in bed. I closed the
door slightly, stripped, and got in bed. I lay there and I could hear them
in the next room. As I lay there, the thoughts of what they were doing
brought up feelings that I knew I had to attend to that night as I too had
not taken care of anything since Saturday night. I got out of bed and
located some lotion in the bathroom. I returned to my bed and lay down. I
poured some lotion in my hand and began to stroke my cock. I could hear
the boys stroking and moaning which helped me get in the mood. After a
while, I heard them began to reach their climaxes and then, it became quiet
over there. I lay there and tried to reach mine, but for some reason I was
having difficulty. I just stopped and tried to relax. I dozed off and
then, I felt a hand on my stomach. I raised my head and found Myles. He
said "Pops, I will help you, I brought the lube over." He poured some in
his hand and then, he grabbed my cock and began to move up and down. I was
shocked to say the least. I said "Myles, you shouldn't be doing this, and
why are you doing this?" He said "Pops, I heard you slapping it, but I
didn't hear you reach success." I got him stopped but then, he started
moving his hands through my chest hair and pubes. I cleared my throat and
he said "Pops, I just love to feel your hair, it is so soft." I said
"Myles, please go back to your room and let me handle this situation by
myself." He said "But Pops, I don't mind doing this and I want to help you
cum." He grabbed my cock again and started jacking me off while he played
with my balls. He soon had me rock hard. I grabbed his hand that was on my
cock, but he gripped it and jerked downward hitting my balls. That
movement began to set me off, and both he and I felt my cock twitch. He
pulled my hand off of his and started jacking me. The feeling was strong
and I had to devote my attention to it, so Myles had complete control of my
cock. I felt the cum rising, and he aimed it toward my chest. The first
burst hit my chin and the others began to coat my chest. He took his hand
and started rubbing over my cock's cum coated head. It was so sensitive
that I raised my legs and tried to push his hands off of my cock. He
finally let go. He walked into my bathroom, got a warm cloth, and started
cleaning me up. He finished, and I took the cloth from him and wiped
myself off a little more. I said "Are you now satisfied?" He said "Yep,
that was fun. I just wanted you to have some fun." He said "Good night
Pops." He left, and pulled the door between the rooms almost closed. I lay
there and relived that experience. I was embarrassed, but a man has needs
and it really doesn't matter how he finds relief, or that is what I tried
to tell myself. I rolled onto my side and I was soon asleep.

I awoke the next morning to noise coming from the next room. It seems as
though Rob and Jay were arguing about something. I started to get out of
bed and go over there when I remembered that I was not wearing underwear.
I got out of bed and was standing up when Jay and Rob came through the
doorway. Jay whistled at me. I felt my face turn red. Rob started to
turn around, but Jay told him that they were going to get something settled
now and that was nothing that he hadn't seen before. You can always depend
on Jay to put things in perspective. I walked over to my luggage, pulled
out a pair of boxer briefs, and asked them "How can I help you?" They were
arguing about our itinerary for the day. I said "Let's go next door and I
will go over it with everybody so that we can get moving." I walked into
the room and Myles made instant eye contact with me and gave me a sly
smile. I felt my face begin to blush. I recovered and cleared up the
plans for the day. I had them to lay out their clothes for the day, add
their underwear to the dirty clothes bag, pack their purchases in their
luggage if possible, close their luggage and place it by the door after
they had their showers and were dressed for the day. I returned to my
room, shaved, and took my morning shower. I dressed and pulled all of my
stuff together and started taking it down to the Denali. I returned to the
room, did a thorough check, stepped into the boys' room and got them on
task. I ushered them down to the Denali with their belongings. We packed
the Denali and then, I finalized our bill with the Hotel.

I returned to the Denali, got in and headed to a restaurant for breakfast.
We ate breakfast and then we returned to the parking garage in Savannah.
We got out of the car and began our last walk around Savannah. I had the
trolley map in hand and as we walked through Savannah, I pointed out some
of the buildings mentioned in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The
next place we visited was really for me and my love of trains. We walked
over to what is referred to as the Roundhouse Railway Museum on the Trolley
Map, but others know it as the Georgia State Railway Museum. We toured the
facility, and I found it more than interesting. There were a number of
exhibits in several of the outside buildings. This area houses historic
railroad structures and includes a: partial roundhouse with an operating
turntable, partial machine shop, tender frame shop, Blacksmith Shop, boiler
house, storehouse and print shop, lumber and planning sheds, coach and
paint shops, and a partial carpentry shop which also houses the Children's
Museum on-site. There were some model train layouts which I enjoyed looking
at, as well as some old railroad cars, and the oldest portable steam engine
in the United States. Now, I enjoyed the other parts of Savannah, but this
held a special interest for me and my love of trains. By this time, we
were well into lunch time, so we walked back and located The Lady and Sons
Restaurant. This place has three floors, and they are busy. We opted for
the buffet which offered barbeque, fried chicken, greens, mashed potatoes,
macaroni and cheese and cornbread among other Southern dishes. For
dessert, we all chose peach cobbler which is one of our favorites. After
we finished our luscious lunch we returned to the parking garage, got in
the Denali, and headed to Charleston.

I had figured that the drive would be about two hours, so we arrived in
Charleston around three o'clock. We had to hunt a parking place, but
finally one appeared and we parked. We began to walk down to the
waterfront where we located several tour carriages. The boys were
intrigued with the carriage and horses. Our tour guide was Seth,a young
man working his way through college. He told us that he had grown up in
Charleston, and he really loved to talk about the history and buildings of
his hometown. He encouraged us to ask questions. The boys gave him their
attention and as we traveled through the streets of Charleston, they asked
thoughtful and appropriate questions.

We returned to our starting point, disembarked, and since we had an idea of
the area, we began to walk around Charleston. We headed to the waterfront
and walked the stone pathway around the waterfront to the Waterfront Park
where there are some beautiful fountains, a pier, several covered swings,
benches, a splash fountain and a view of Fort Sumter. I could imagine that
the splash fountain would be a great place for everybody during the summer,
but since the weather was beginning to cool off, we did not stay there
long. We walked out onto the pier and found several covered swings. We
sat down and enjoyed the view of the harbor and the breeze.

We noticed that there were several tour boats in the harbor and I promised
the boys that we would take one tomorrow to see the city from the water.
As we walked, we passed the Charleston Custom House which is an impressive
building that took over 25 years to build because of the Civil War. The
architecture is outstanding and, of course, we took pictures. I looked at
my phone and noted that it was getting late. I told the boys that we
needed to check in at our hotel and find a place for our evening meal.

We returned to the Denali, and I set the GPS to the address of our hotel.
We arrived, checked in, rode the elevator to our rooms, placed our stuff in
our rooms, and met in my room to talk. I asked the boys to tell me what
they saw while we were on the carriage tour. They mentioned several things
that they wanted to see up close, so we planned on doing that the next day.
We finished our talk and headed out to eat. We went down to an open air
restaurant and ordered sweet tea, and a bowl of shrimp and grits and/or
She-Crab Soup. We finished our meal and walked back to the hotel.

We spent some time in my room talking and watching TV as we were tired of
walking and looking. The boys went to their rooms around nine o'clock, and
I called it a night soon afterwards.

Thursday morning arrived, and we slept a little later than normal. I woke
up around eight- thirty and woke them up as well. We all hurried through
our morning routines and were soon ready to find a place to eat breakfast.
We walked out and our noses led us to this little eatery. We were seated,
given a menu which we examined carefully and then, we all ordered the same
breakfast. Our breakfast was served and we enjoyed it. We left the eatery
and walked down to the harbor tour ticket booths. We found out the times
of the tours and made our reservations for two o'clock. We walked and
explored some of the small shops in the area. I found several shirts that
I just had to have, and I bought a couple for Phil as well. We headed on
down the walkway until we came to the City Market. This proved to be an
interesting place as the boys and I explored and looked at a variety of
souvenirs, t-shirts, antiques, candies, foods, and crafts. After we had
walked through the entire Market, we made our way back through it and
purchased the items that we wanted to take home. We finished at the City
Market and took our purchases back to our rooms. The boys begged for some
rest time, so I told them we could rest for about an hour, but we couldn't
take any longer as we had to be at the docks for our tour.

We pulled ourselves together and headed to the tour boat. We boarded and
found some great seats. The tour around the harbor was narrated however,
there were some problems with the speakers and sometimes we only heard
every other word. We were able to get closer views of Fort Sumter, the
Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown, Battery Point, the Cooper River Bridge,
Castle Pinckney and other houses and points of interest along the
waterfront. We took some beautiful pictures to share with our families.
After we finished the tour, we started walking around Charleston and took
pictures of some of the points of interest as well as, some of the examples
of colonial architecture. We ended our tour at the Battery. As we walked
back to the hotel, we took pictures of boats on the harbor and the houses
on Rainbow Row.

We made it back to hotel, rested, and decided on what we wanted for dinner.
We returned to the open air restaurant that we had eaten at the previous
night and we ordered different seafood dishes and shared them around the
table. This was a great idea and enabled the boys to experience a variety
of seafood dishes. We finished our dinner and walked back to the hotel
along the waterfront.

We entered my room and the boys headed through the connecting door to their
room. In a few minutes they drifted back to my room naked. I looked at
them and raised my eyebrows. Rob said, "Pops, we are tired of our clothes,
and we just want to relax and be comfortable." I said "If that is what you
want, then I am okay with it." Ryan took control of the TV and ordered a
movie for us to watch. They lounged around the room. I was enjoying
having my bed by myself until Myles decided to join me. He walked over,
and lay down next to me. Ryan looked over and shook his head. Rob and Jay
were too wrapped up in the movie to realize what was happening in the room.
I looked around the room every so often and noted just how much the boys
had grown and matured. It was interesting to see the size of their cocks,
lush pubes, and varying sized balls. I watched Myles and enjoyed watching
his cock twitch and his balls move around in his bag. The movie ended, and
I encouraged them to go to their room. As they were moving through the
doorway, Jay decided to pull on Rob's cock which initiated some boy on boy
play. I allowed it for a while and then, I called it a night and directed
them to get in bed. I stripped down to my underwear and crawled into my
bed. I was soon asleep as the day's activities had worn me out.

Friday morning arrived, and we slept a little later than normal. We woke
up, did our morning rituals, packed, and were ready to leave by ten
o'clock. I checked us out, and we headed to the Denali. We packed our
luggage and purchases and then, we walked down to a small café and
ordered a late breakfast. We returned to the Denali, loaded up, and began
the journey home with Jay as my co-pilot.

END of Chapter 37 - My Son and His Friends

Wow, this has been an interesting chapter to write as I had to reference my
pictures and information that I had received when I visited these two
cities. I also have to thank Art for his review of the section related to
the St. Patrick Parade in Savannah. There is a lot to see in both cities
and far too much to try to pack into this story.

If you have never visited these two cities, I would encourage you to put it
on your list of things to do. There is so much to walk and see. The
experiences are authentic, and the food is beyond delicious.

Thank you for reading this story. I really enjoy your e-mails with your
questions and comments. I respond to each one. If you don't believe me,
send me an e-mail.

Until Chapter 38, enjoy your Memorial Day and remember those who gave their
all so that we could experience freedom and enjoy life as we see fit.
