Nathan's Story - Part 1

It was almost 10 O'clock On a Saturday night as a man and a boy walked
together through a crowd of nearly 50 people all making their way out of
the multiplex theater.  After watching the latest action flick, all made
their way to their respective vehicles in the large half-empty parking lot.
The night was bitterly cold for January and the steam of their breaths
could be seen in the clear air.  Everyone shivered as they fumbled with
their keys and opened the doors of their vehicles so to start up and turn
on the heat for much-needed warmth.  Shivering under their heavy jackets,
the man and boy walked to a silver 2008 Hyundai Tuscon nestled between a
handfull of other cars.

The man was named Richard but his close friends called him Rick.  He was 36
years of age and worked at a local Hospital in admissions.  Rick was 5 feet
10 inches tall and he weighed 170 lbs.  His body tone was regular yet lean
and he still had a runner's build left over from his years of track and
field though that was all from his high school and college years.  The
color of his hair was chestnut brown and cut short.  This did not hide the
fact that Rick had a receding hairline making him look older.  His eyes
were brown and his eyelids drooped slightly giving him a sad expression
that he did without knowing he was doing it.  His face was long which kept
in character with his calm demeanor.

In contrast to the man, the young boy looked excited after having seen a
movie that appealed to his adolescent demographic.  His name was Nathan and
he was 13-years old.  Nathan was the son of Rick's best friend at work.
Rick and Nathan's mother, Laura, had been hired together 6 years before
and, over time, Rick got to know Nathan really well.  As their friendship
became stronger, Laura knew as Nathan grew older that he would need a
father-figure.  Thinking ahead, she asked Rick to be an impromptu Big
Brother type for her youngest son because she trusted him more than with
any stranger.

Nathan had an older brother, Kevin, who was 5 years older.  Laura had seen
what the lack of a strong male presence had done to Kevin who had always
been acting out against her authority.  Her oldest son had been a long
string of school meetings for discipline problems or run-ins with the
juvenile authorities over hooliganism.  It had caused Nathan's mom so much
worry and problems that it had aged her prematurely.  So, when Nathan
became 10 years old, his mother asked Rick to take the impressionable boy
out and do stuff with him so to be a proper role model.  So far, it had
worked to make Nathan far more easier to parent than her oldest son had
been.

Nathan was a nice, friendly boy who was easy to be around.  He was 5 feet 4
inches tall and weighed 105 pounds.  His build was slim yet nicely toned
after spending many hours out with his friends from the apartment complex
where they all lived playing basketball, riding bikes, or skateboarding.
The boy had straight blonde hair that was medium length cut in a loose
style popular with skaterboys.  His eyes were a soft blue that reminded one
of the clearest sky.  What most people first noticed was how cute he was
for a boy and how he was always so happy and friendly unlike many teens who
appear cold and aloof.  To Rick, Nathan was an ideal companion when he
needed the company of another guy for a few hours.

Rick was married to Korean woman that he had met when he was in the Army.
Her name was Min and she was nice but always serious.  Together they had a
daughter, Katie, and she was 5 years old.  Rick loved them both immensely
but, sometimes, he needed to get away from them and relax.  Spending a few
hours on the weekends always helped Rick go back home and be the dutiful
husband and father.  In many ways. Nathan was like a little brother that he
had never had.

The man opened the door to his silver SUV and clicked the lock button to
open the door for the still-excited boy.  Hearing the passenger-side door
click open in the freezing night, Nathan quickly opened his door and jumped
into the seat.  Climbing into the driver's seat, Rick glanced at the cute
boy beside him and he watched the bubbly 13-year old fumbling with the
seatbelt which made the man smile slightly.

"Liked the movie, buddy?" asked Rick as he closed the door and locked up
both his and the boy's doors with a press of a button.

"That was so awesome!" replied the blonde boy excitedly who finally got his
seatbelt put on and he was sitting back eagerly waiting for his older
companion to put the heater on so to dispel the crisp cold that was making
him shiver uncontrollably, "What'd you think?  Did you like it?"

"Yeah, it was awesome like you said," calmly answered the man as he started
the vehicle and then moved some dials so to start up the heater which blew
out some cold air with a soft hiss, "So, you in a hurry or do you want me
to take the slow way home?"

Over the 3 years that they had been hanging around together, Rick found
that there were times that he didn't want their time together to end so
quickly.  When they went out to the movies like tonight, there were two
ways to go home.  One was quick because it was through the freeway and was
about 15 minutes.  The other was to go through side streets and it took
over twice as long because it was winding and had many stops.  Most times,
the boy chose the long way because they could talk about stuff like sports
and cools movies like the one they had just seen.  But, recently as in the
past few weeks, the guy-talk had turned to sexual matters under the guise
of teaching the boy about "the facts of life".  It was a subject that the
young boy had been more than interested to talk about.  Since Nathan had no
father to tell him about such an important part of life, Rick felt it had
only been right for him to instruct the very curious boy.  After all, every
boy needed to know about sex he told himself.

To help instruct the 13-year old boy, Rick started to download graphic
sexual pictures that he had found online and he put them on his Nokia phone
to show Nathan on their little get-togethers.  When he first showed them to
the blond boy a month earlier, the slim eighth grader looked at each of the

"Let's go the long way, okay?" happily answered the young boy quickly
pulling his thick blue jacket around him tightly as the heater struggled to
warm the interior of the SUV, "I don't feel like getting home right away.
It's kinda boring there, you know."

"Yeah...I know what you mean," Rick answered with a knowing nod, "Let's
just take it slow and easy since I know your mom won't mind you being out
late since you're with me.  Right?"

"Hahahaha...yeah!" said Nathan sounding content that he didn't have to be
taken home yet, "Being with you is the best!."

Rick reached over and gave the young boy a playful tousle of his blond
hair.  This made Nathan smile because he liked it when Rick was playful
with him and he did not pull away but seemed to encourage it more because
it felt so good.  After the affectionate gesture, Rick took the phone out
of his coat pocket and put it innocently in the cupholder between himself
and the 13-year old boy.  Hoping to arouse the young boy's curiousity, Rick
had spent all week finding decent pictures of hardcore gay sex for the

The air of the SUV was warming up slowly as Rick drove out of the parking
lot along with a number of other vehicles.  Rick talked about what he liked
about the movie they had just seen as the young boy sat quietly looking

while he was speaking and driving that Nathan had reached over to adjust
the heater but, as he pulled his hand back, the young boy casually picked
up the phone from where the man had left it.  It was done so deftly and

himself, Rick knew that the blond boy was going to check and see if he had

As the SUV went down the quiet streets, Rick drove along making a comment
every so often trying to keep the conversation going.  However, Rick
noticed that Nathan had become less interested in their conversation and
had become almost inattentive.  The blond boy seemed totally engrossed on
the contents contained within the phone.  Unable to see the screen clearly
because the young boy held it so only he could see it, Rick could only
guess at which of the gay pictures that Nathan was looking at with such
attention.  Rick wondered if Nathan had noticed that the sex pictures were
all of men.  After 5 minutes of silence following Rick's having given up on
trying to maintain the conversation singlehandedly, the man tapped the
young boy on the shoulder which seemed to startle him.  One would have
thought that Rick had jabbed the young boy with a pointy stick by the way
he had jumped in his seat.

"See something you like?" asked Rick with a friendly tone as he quietly
chuckled to himself at the way the young boy became startled at the sound
of his voice after the long minutes of silence.

Caught offguard because of his attention being focused on the phone in his
grasp, the blond boy had almost dropped the cellphone but he covered it up
quickly as if nervous about something.  Rick thought to himself that his
young friend was acting abnormally guilty about something which was unusual
since he felt that they trusted each other with everything.

"No...(gulp)..not really," murmured the 13-year old boy trying to put on an
innocent face that did not fool Rick at all, "Just looking at some stuff.
Ummm...like checking the time...that's all."

Rick kept silent for a minute as he drove.  During that time, Nathan put
the cellphone back in the cupholder then adjusted his jacket so it covered
up the crotch area of his jeans.  In the dark, Rick could not tell if the
small boy was aroused but he deduced that Nathan was covering up a bulge in
his pants by his seemingly innocent act of adjusting his jacket downwards.

"That's nice.  I kinda thought you was checking out some more pictures,"
said Rick nonchalantly, "I figured you might like seeing something
different.  You know...from the ones I showed you before."

Even in the weak glow of a street light, Rick could see that his comment
had made the boy embarassed and he looked a little confused as if being
accused of a terrible crime.  For a few seconds more, nothing was said
between the man and boy.

"All of those pictures were of...of guys," said the young boy finally as if
he was not sure he should bring it up because he was unsure of what it
meant to find only homosexual pictures on the phone of a man who was almost
like his father, "Last week, there was only some....like a few...but this
time they all were just guys....unless I couldn't find the regular ones you
showed me before."

Rick could feel the young boy looking up at him with uncertainty in his
bright blue eyes.  It was a reaction that Rick had expected because finding
only the gay pictures had confused the young boy putting his accepted image
of Rick in flux now.  The man told himself that the young boy was wondering
if his older friend was gay.  It worried the 13-year old boy that perhaps
his older friend was not the same-old person that he thought he was and it
called into question everything else in his young life.  To prevent any
panic from the young boy, Rick knew he had to explain his intentions to
Nathan so as to maintain order in their special friendship.  Also, to
expand it by adding a sexual dimension to it as well without alarming the
tender youth by any awkward advances.

"Yeah...I just thought you would like seeing something different," answered
Rick in a friendly tone yet instructional, "Remember how I told you that
regular sex and gay sex are okay?"

The blond boy nodded as he agreed in a subdued tone still trying to make
sense of what Rick was trying to explain to him.  They had talked about sex

Nathan knew about gay people from television and they seemed nice but the

The blond boy shook his head quietly still trying to make sense of what his

"It's because they like sex with guys too," added Rick in a soothing tone
that did alot to make the slim boy feel better, "Gay sex is just sex.
Being gay is just a name you call yourself when you think of yourself as
liking guys only.  Looking at guys having sex doesn't make you gay and
having gay sex doesn't make you gay.  Look at me.  I don't think I'm gay
and I like those pictures of guys having sex.  Didn't you, squirt?"

For a second there was a pause which made Rick look at his young companion
momentarily.  The young boy looked up a little ashamed about something
because his gaze dropped when Rick looked at him.

"Yeah...it..it was kinda cool," said the blond boy still staring at the
dashboard and in a hoarse tone, "Some of them were...I guess, ya know."

"Atta boy!" said Rick in a confident voice while tousling the 13-year old
boy's blond hair once again finally making the kid smile softly, "I bet you
were worried about becoming all fairy, huh?"

This made the slim boy laugh which seemed to fill him with relief.  Nathan
felt better for Rick helping explain things to him.  It was true that
Nathan was afraid that his being aroused by pictures of men having sex with
each other might mean that he was gay.  But, Rick he liked it and he wasn't
gay thought the slim teen.  Nathan was comforted by the fact that Rick was
married and had a daughter.

"You already know that I like girls.  But, liking guys a little, well I
guess, that would make me a little bit bisexual then," said Rick as he
continued to keep his arm stretched out to softly rub the back of the young
boy's soft neck in an assuring manner, "Nothing wrong liking girls all the
time and guys sometimes.  Am I Right?"

"Yeah," answered the blond boy in a stronger voice as Rick softly rubbed
his neck making him feel more comfortable.

Over the years of their hanging out, Rick had trained the young boy from
the start to accept his casual touching and fondling.  It started out with

"Listen.  Let's stop here and talk a bit," said Rick as he pulled his arm
back and he turned the SUV into a small strip mall 5 minutes from the
apartments where Nathan lived, "That way me and you can hash some things
out.  Okay?"

"Alright," answered the young boy feeling better and looking around the
nearly empty strip mall as Rick parked to the side where there were shadows
so no one could see inside the cab of the SUV and they could talk without
anyone bothering them, "If you want to."

As Rick shut off the engine, Nathan noticed that everything in the strip
mall was dark except for a light in a small Mexican place that he and his
mom sometimes ate at once in a long while.  It seemed that someone was
there because a red Nissan Altima was parked directly in front and a faint
light was on.  It must be the owner thought Nathan to himself because he
knew they closed early like 6 or 7.  However, since he had other thoughts
on his mind he gave it no further thought.  Rick had parked far enough away
that it would be difficult to make out who was parked on the side so they
could have privacy for their little discussion.  The heater had done it's
job and the cabin of the SUV was very warm.  It had been warm enough that
Nathan had opened his jacket so not to swelter in the thick down-filled
garment.

"There we go...no one can bother us here," Rick said as he turned to look
at the young boy sitting in the passenger seat looking down at the phone in
the cupholder thinking about picking it up once more, "So....what did you
think about those pictures then?"

The blond boy shrugged as if unsure as what to say as he picked up the
cellphone and turned it on.  Rick watched silently as his young friend
pulled up a picture then another and then a third.  The man watched the
young boy seemingly studying each of the first three pictures of men having
sex as if trying to form an opinion and answer his older friend's question.
Rick felt that Nathan was trying to say something that would please him and
not tell him his true feelings on the matter out of fear of exploring his
sexuality.

"They were...kinda cool," answered the blond boy finally as he looked at
his older friend with a sidelong glance that betrayed his hesitation to
admitting that he liked them somewhat because it might mean he could be
gay.

It was a thought that troubled the young boy slightly though not as much as
before finding out his good friend, Rick, had the same feelings.

tone with a touch of reassurance so to elicit a truthful response, "Or just
girls?"

"Just girls," answered the young boy quickly and calmly as he looked up at
his older friend with more confidence.

"Me too," said Rick with a smile meant to make the blond boy feel better
and to lower his resistance to any sexual overtures, "But, I've gotten to
like those pictures of guys having sex, lately.  Truthfully, I've never had
sex with a guy before but these pictures do make me curious."

"Really?" said the young boy looking at his older companion in a puzzled
way, "How come?"

"Well...I like them because they look like so much fun is one reason,"
explained Rick as if he were talking about a common problem like fixing a
sink, "But, mainly, I know I am getting older and I've been thinking that I
would like to try some things out while I'm young enough to enjoy them.
Don't you think so?"

"Yeah," responded Nathan still sounding unsure as to what Rick was trying
to tell him, " I guess."

"I know it's confusing, little buddy, but I think what I'm trying to say is
that ever since I started seeing those pictures of guys doing...well, you
know, gay stuff.  I've been curious about how it feels.  You probably
thinks its crazy and why would I want to do stuff like that if I'm not
gay," explained Rick even further trying to elaborate his explanation to
the blond boy who listened quietly, "It's just that I don't want to grow
old still wondering how it feels and by then it will be too late because
who would want to do it with an old man?"

That made Nathan giggle because he thought of Rick as being kinda of old
and it never dawned on the young boy that he would be even older one day.

"Yeah, that would be really gross if you were old and having sex," said the

to accept more of what they were currently discussing, "You're a little old
but not like all gross and stuff like a grandpa."

This made Rick guffaw and shake his head at the young boy's expression
which he said so innocently and without malice.

"Well, I'm not ready for the rest home yet, little buddy!" exclaimed Rick
as he mussed up the slim teen's blond hair with good heartedness and

The friendly nature of their banter helped alleviate the tense confusion
which had formed in the SUV as they discussed the nature of the gay
pictures on the man's cellphone which the blond boy was holding and what
they had meant to the teen boy about his older companion.  Rick smiled at
the young boy sitting next to him and he took advantage of his hand being

which told Rick that their friendship had not poisoned by any doubts that

"Sure," answered the blond boy in a relaxed tone as his head fell down upon

It made Rick feel good to hear Nathan say that about him.

"I love you, too, kid," said Rick softly.

In response to this tender moment, Nathan tilted his head while his chin
was on his chest and he gave Rick the most heartfelt expression that Rick
had ever seen on the young boy's cute face.  Most of the time, Rick knew
that Nathan was a little smartass but every so often the cute boy was the
most sweetest thing he had ever seen.

"So, you want to go home?" asked Rick as he removed his hands from the back
of the young boy's neck and put it on the ignition, "It's getting kind of
late."

The blond boy lifted his head and he tilted it side to side to help stretch
the relaxed muscles after a good neck massage.

"I can stay out past midnight," answered the 13-year old boy in a relaxed
tone which told Rick that his young companion was in no hurry to get home
perhaps partly due to the carnal nature of their conversation, "Mom knows
I'm safe with you."

"Yeah, she does," replied Rick as he took his hand off the ignition and he
looked around the dark parking lot not looking for anything in particular,
"What do you want to talk about?"

The young boy did not answer right away as he looked out the passenger side
window for a minute or two as if thinking it over in his barely teen-age
mind.  Nervously, the young teen fumbled with the cellphone in his hands
but he never looked at it directly.

"We can talk about the movie or about next weekend or..." Nathan started to
say nonchalantly before he stopped as if unsure to if he should complete
his sentence then did so quickly in a low tone, "The pics on your
phone......if you want to, I mean."

For a few seconds, Rick silently looked out the window on his side of the
SUV as if considering what the teen boy had just suggested.  Slowly, the
man turned his upper body towards the blond teen and rested his shoulder on
his seat which was padded by the jacket he was wearing.

"I guess we could look at the pics awhile, okay?" responded Rick as he
reached over and took back his cellphone from Nathan's grasp.  The young
boy did not resist but relented easily with an pleased look in his blue
eyes that told the man that his young friend was happy about his choice.

"Yeah...ummmm, sure," responded young Nathan in a weak attempt to hide his
great interest in the pornographic content on the small electronic device.

In a reverse pose of Rick, the slim teen boy turned his whole body so his
left side lay against the seat while facing his older friend who was
thumbing through the cellphone as if seeking something special.  With great

this.

Knowing that Nathan was naturally impatient, Rick took his time perusing
the gay pictures he had chosen as if he could not decide on which one he

usually somber face.  The man knew that it only made the blond youth more

Finally, after a couple of minutes, Rick picked one that he really enjoyed
