Chapter 4: A Room Apart

A similar room came into focus and a voice was speaking, "Welcome to the
Esbjerg ICR Jump Station!"

I guess everyone had to give a cheery greeting to arrivals, thought Max.

A woman shook hands with Deputy 4ster and then with Max as they both
stepped off the platform. After some short updates, Darwin and Max walked
up the stairs and outside into the FreeCity of Esbjerg. It was late in the
evening and there was little activity in the streets. Max knew that
Esbjerg was a smaller city than Port Copenhagen but it was an important
location for trade imports and exports to various other regions. This ICR
Headquarters was not nearly as big as the one back home, but it was still
well designed with an intricate latticework structure that hung off the
stonework of the main building. The Deputy signaled for a car and saw on
his ReD that it would arrive in 2 minutes 15 seconds.

"Sorry for all the rushing around Max but the local council needed us to
come in early to discuss some recent developments regarding trade issues
with the Central African Kingdom".

"It's okay Deputy, this has all been a great learning experience for me and
I'm glad to be a part of it...especially being able to work with you", Max
replied and looked down when he finished the sentence. He wasn't really
sure why he said it, but he knew he meant it.

Darwin looked back at Max, "I think you've been doing some great things
with us so far and I'd like to have you help develop a presentation for a
council group in Central Africa".

Max looked up, eager at the opportunity, "Really?"

"Definitely" replied Darwin, "and for the record, I like being able to work
with you too."

Max had a wide smile on his face. It was a cute look that Darwin had seen
a few times before when Max seemed really happy about something. Max would
put on a big smile and push up his head ever so slightly at the same time.
It was pretty adorable and reminded Darwin that it's one of those faces
that only a young person can make work. It was also something uniquely Max
and Darwin was glad to know it.

Their car arrived and glided to a stop, they got in and headed off to one
of the local homes that were reserved for ICR staff. In route Max noticed
a set of partially ruined statues near the water and seemed to remember it
being a famous landmark for the area.

Darwin saw Max looking out the window, "Men at Sea...that's what they are
called. They were built a very long time ago. I heard that a group of
artists have been debating whether they should restore them or leave them
as they are. If there's time, perhaps we can go see it."

"Sure!" Max said enthusiastically.

About ten minutes later they were pulling up to a narrow three story house
that had the familiar fusion-look of ancient and modern architecture.
Inside, the house was simply furnished with airy carved wood furniture and
patchwork fabrics that had become popular in the region. A narrow kitchen
looked out onto a backyard and Darwin offered Max something to drink.

"No thanks," Max replied, "I think I'm going to head up to bed, I'm pretty
exhausted".

Darwin nodded and Max headed up to the second floor where he found a small,
cozy looking bedroom with a window facing the garden. Shutting the door,
Max stripped down to bare skin since he had no other clothes with him and
crawled under the covers. Lying in bed he stared at the ceiling and
watched patterns form from the moonlit shadows of swaying tree branches.
The wind blew softly outside and small creaks of sound emanated from the
house. Max' mind wandered and apparently so did his hand as it slid down
to find his boyhood. Growing up in a society that was rooted in the ideals
formed by the Nieuw Philosophy Movement, children learned early about the
human body and sexuality. There was never any shame in the subject and
everyone was encouraged to ask questions if they wanted to know something.
Lying under the soft, warm covers, it wasn't long before Max began slowly
pleasuring himself.

Out in the hall Darwin reached the second floor landing and paused thinking
he heard something from Max' room. A moment of silence passed and he
stepped into the empty adjacent bedroom. Darwin prepared for bed and he
found himself thinking more and more about Max despite having only known
him for less than two weeks. He felt drawn to the boy and when they spent
time together their personalities just seemed to click. As Darwin rested
his head on the pillow he started considering whether anything further
might develop between the two of them. There was the additional challenge
of this being his apprentice; a professional relationship that might last
years. His line of work was often a lonely one and having any type of
relationship was always difficult. He'd always known he preferred men over
women and he had a few younger boyfriends before but none as young as Max.
The age gap wasn't that huge a concern since society had grown accustomed
to a wide range of lifestyles and accepted that people connected with each
other simply because they had a bond as two humans, regardless of age, sex
or race. Though not as common, Darwin did know a few people who had
intergenerational relationships.

Before he drifted off to sleep, Darwin decided that he would leave it to
Max to decide and follow his lead. Mere minutes passed and both Deputy and
Apprentice succumed to exhaustion and slept soundly, their heads so near
each other, separated only by a wall between rooms.
