Nick's Dragons - 13

Daniel saw the flashing red lights three blocks away. When Nick called, he
had hurried out of the library, jumped into his car, and driven as quickly
as he could. He saw there wasn't going to be a place to park nearby, so
turned into the lot for the Government Services building and parked
there. He ran the final two blocks.

A fire department rescue vehicle, engine company, ambulance, and police car
blocked the street. Daniel pushed his way through the small crowd that had
gathered on the sidewalk.

"Excuse me, please, I need to get through!" He said several times as he
slid between first one person and then the next.

He was stopped at the door by a police officer. "No one past this point."

"But Nick called me, I'm his friend, he needs me!"

"Sorry, you'll have to wait here."

Daniel was about to argue further, but realized it would be pointless. He
reached for his cell and dialed Nick's apartment.

"Nick? It's me! I'm downstairs, they won't let me up. What the fuck's going
on?"

"It's my mom; I can't wake her up."

"What's wrong? Is she all right? Tell them to let me in!"

"Hold on."

Daniel heard voices in the background and then Nick came back on the
line. "I'll be down in a minute."

Less than a minute later four fireman came down the stairs carrying a
stretcher. Mrs. Hunter, strapped in tightly, was wrapped in a blanket and
had an oxygen mask over her face. Nick followed a few steps behind. The
officer motioned for the crowd to step back so the emergency crew could get
to the ambulance.

"Daniel!" Nick cried, pushing past the officer and into Daniel's arms.

"It's okay! It's okay!" Daniel whispered in Nick's ear as he hugged him
tight.

"She's been drinking. Now she won't wake up!" Nick sobbed.

Daniel rocked him back and forth. "It'll be all right," Daniel whispered,
trying to reassure him.

The crew finished loading Mrs. Hunter into the vehicle.

One of the paramedics turned to Nick. "Sorry, but you can't come with us,"
he said with a sympathetic look. "The officer over there will take care of
things and drive you."

Nick turned around and one of the guys that had been upstairs looked at
him. "Ready to go?" he asked softly.

Nick nodded, `yes'.

Nick glanced back at Daniel and then once again at the policeman. "This is
my best friend, can he come along?"

The cop took a quick look at Daniel. "Sure, he said, nodding in the
direction of the car.

Daniel could tell that Nick was frustrated that the officer didn't use his
lights and siren on the way to the hospital. The ambulance had screamed on
ahead but the police car stopped for all the lights and followed at a safe
speed some distance behind.

"Can't we go faster?" Nick pleaded, worry and fear on his face.

"Sorry," the cop said glancing back.

Daniel was glad that he and Nick were immediately led to a waiting room and
shown where to sit. It was good to get Nick settled. The officer spoke to
someone in green hospital scrubs and a short time later she walked over to
meet them.

"Hi, my name's Sandra. Your mom is in the treatment room. I want you to
know we're going to take real good care of her."

Nick nodded.

"Is there anyone else we should call, your dad? Other family members?"

Tears came to Nick's eyes and he choked up.

"It's just Nick and his mom," Daniel offered gently.

"And you are?"

"A friend," Daniel said, as Nick hugged him tight and sobbed.

Sandra smiled. "Well, we're going to need a little more information. Do you
think you could help this young man fill out some forms?"

Daniel looked at Nick, "I'll do anything you want."

"Daniel's dad is a doctor," Nick said proudly.

Sandra smiled. "I'm sure that will be a big help."

It was about an hour later when someone finally came out to speak to them.

"Hello, I'm Dr. Jacoby. Are you Mrs. Hunter's son?" he asked walking
straight up to Daniel.

Daniel blushed. "No, you need to talk to Nick," he said nodding in Nick's
direction.

"Oh, sorry." The doctor walked over and sat down next to Nick.

"Is she okay?" Nick whispered.

"I'll be honest with you. She's very sick. We've given her some medicine
and we're helping her to breathe. I'm worried. It looks like she drank a
lot of alcohol."

Nick lowered his head and tears fell to the floor. Daniel hurried over and
wrapped his arms around him.

"The next forty eight hours will tell us a lot," Dr. Jacoby said gently and
put a hand on Nick's knee.

Nick hugged Daniel closer.

The doctor got up. "The police have a few questions. I asked them to give
you a little more time, but they said they need to talk to you now."

"Can't it wait?" Daniel asked, hoping to protect Nick.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel sighed, "Can you get us ten more minutes then?"

The doctor nodded. "That sounds fine."

* * * *

The officer was gentle, and reassuring. Daniel thanked him several times
for explaining things in a way that both he and Nick could understand. The
long and the short of it was that since Nick was a minor and he had no
relatives, this was going to become a Social Services matter. Nick sobbed,
and clung to Daniel.

"Nick's a good friend. I'm an adult and my dad's a doctor. Can't he stay at
my place for a while?"

The officer thought a moment. "I'll tell you what, I can let you take him
to your place for tonight. But I have to report this to Social Services
tomorrow. I'm sure they'll send a caseworker, and after that I don't know
what will happen."

"I'm staying here!" Nick said firmly, "I'm not leaving my mom."

Daniel looked at Nick and then turned to the officer. "I'll give you my
cell number. That way you can reach us whenever you need us."

"If you leave the building it'd be a good idea to leave your number with
the hospital also."

Daniel nodded.

"I'm sorry about your mom," the police officer said gently and put a hand
on Nick's shoulder.

Nick looked up, "Thanks."

It was past midnight when Daniel asked a nurse for a blanket. Nick had been
allowed into the Intensive Care Unit for ten minutes each hour to see his
mother. The first time had been the hardest. Daniel had to practically drag
him away from the bedside when it was time to leave. Now, Nick was curled
up on a small couch in the waiting room. Exhausted, he had laid down and
instantly fallen asleep.

"Here you go," Daniel whispered as he spread the blanket over Nick. He
leaned close, pushed a lock of hair from his eyes and kissed him tenderly
on the forehead. "I'm right here." He sat down next to Nick and rested his
hand on the boy's shoulder to let him know he wasn't alone.

* * * *

Nick woke shortly after six. Daniel had dozed off. He woke as soon as Nick
stirred.

"Are you okay?" Daniel asked.

Nick wiped the sleep from his eyes, "Yeah."

The ICU staff wouldn't let them in to see Nick's mom until later that
morning. In the meantime Daniel found the cafeteria and the two had gotten
some breakfast.

When the guys were finally allowed into the unit, Dr. Jacoby was standing
beside Mrs. Hunter's bed.

"She's doing better," He said with a smile, "I think we can take the
breathing tube out later today. But she probably won't wake up for a
while."

"How long?" Nick asked, holding his mom's hand.

"I don't know. It might be days from now."

Nick looked concerned.

"We're worried about injury to her brain. We're giving her a lot of
medicine to try and help with that."

Nick gave Daniel a sad look.

"Thanks," Daniel whispered to the doctor.

* * * *

It was about noon when Daniel's cell rang. It was a social worker with the
Children's Services Division. She asked where she could find Nick. Daniel
told her that Nick was with him, and she suggested a time to meet.

"Two o'clock will be fine," Daniel said, looking over at Nick, "can you
meet us here at the hospital?"

She agreed.

* * * *

Nick was trembling when the social worker introduced herself and explained
why she was there. As a minor in need of protective services, it was her
job to see that Nick was cared for until his mother was better. Eventually
there would be a court hearing and a temporary guardian would be appointed.

When Nick had begged to let Daniel be his guardian, the social worker had
been non-committal. "That's a ways down the road," she said gently. "For
now, we have to find you a safe place to live."

"I can live with Daniel!" Nick said without hesitation.

"I'm sorry, but we need to put you in the care of a licensed foster
home. Your friend isn't on the list for that."

Nick broke down.

"Ma'am," Daniel spoke up as Nick burrowed into his arms. "Nick has a
classmate that is in foster care. Is there any chance Nick could stay
there? At least that way he'd know someone."

"What's your friend's name?"

"Alex," Nick sniffed. "His foster mom is Judith something; they live over
by the mall."

"Judith Carson?"

"Yeah, that's her!" Nick managed a weak smile.

The social worker thought a moment. "That might work. I know Mrs. Carson
very well. I would need to call and ask if she can take a placement on
short notice. If she agrees, it would be all right with me."

"Would you please tell her it would be for Nick?" Daniel asked, tears now
coming to his eyes, "It might help."

"Of course, I'll get right on it."

Daniel reached out and shook her hand. "Thanks for doing what you're
doing."

She nodded, "My pleasure. I'll be in touch in a few hours."

* * * *

At Daniel's urging, he and Nick took a short break from their vigil at the
hospital, and went back to Daniel's apartment.

"You're starting to smell like a week old cum rag," Daniel teased.

Nick laughed and agreed that a shower and clean clothes sounded like a good
idea.

They were back in the hospital waiting room a little more than an hour
later.

Daniel nudged Nick. His head was down and he was absorbed in reading a
book. "Check it out! The army is in town."

A tall, well muscled soldier had just stepped out of the elevator. Dressed
in army green fatigues and highly polished black boots, he looked as if he
had just walked off a parade ground.

Nick's eyes got wide. "That's Mitch!" He said with a hint of surprise.

"Your mom's boyfriend?"

"Yeah."

As Mitch walked toward them, Daniel noticed Nick appeared to be staring at
the guy's crotch. He nudged Nick as if to say, `what's up with that?' and
Nick blushed.

"I came as fast as I could," Mitch said softly. "How's your mom?"

Nick looked at Daniel, he seemed unsure of what to say.

Daniel stood and reached out to shake Mitch's hand. "I'm Nick's friend,
Daniel. His mom is pretty sick. She drank a lot of Vodka. She's kind of
like in a coma."

Mitch got a sad look on his face. "They locked down the Fort after the
accident, no one was allowed in or out. I tried to call her but kept
getting a busy signal."

"I think it was off the hook for a while, Nick replied. "What accident?"

"A rifle squad was crossing the old bombing range. Apparently they stumbled
onto some unexploded ordinance. We lost two soldiers and three more were
injured. It's been all over the news."

"We haven't seen the news for a few days," Daniel explained.

Mitch looked at Nick. "I don't know if you realize it, but I care a lot
about your mother...and you. I'll do anything I can to help."

Nick glanced at Daniel, who gave him an encouraging look.

"Thanks," Nick whispered, his eyes growing wet. He thought a moment. "When
she wakes up, will you help me talk her into going someplace where she can
get help?" he sniffed.

"Mitch sat down next to Nick. He wrapped an arm around him. "You bet I
will." Nick smiled, and then giggled. "I've never been hugged by a general
before!"

Mitch laughed, "Make that a squad leader! "I'm not even close to being a
general."

Daniel chuckled.

* * * *

"Thanks for letting me be here with your mom!" Mitch said, looking down at
Nick.

When the nurses had allowed Nick to go back into his mom's room, Mitch had
still been in the waiting room with them. He didn't even have to think
about it, he just told the staff that Mitch was his mom's boyfriend, and he
thought it would be good for her if he be allowed to visit.

Nick smiled. "She really likes you."

Mitch smiled back. "I like her, too."

It was quiet for a moment. "And speaking of liking, Daniel is more than
just a casual friend, isn't he?" Mitch said with a knowing look.

Nick fumbled around. "Nah, we just met in the library one day. We like
reading the same kinds of books."

Mitch gave him a wry smile. "I know bullshit when I hear it," he said
softly.

Nick felt panicked.

"Relax. It's none of my business."

Nick wondered if the guy could be trusted. "Mitch, Daniel means a lot to
me," he said slowly.

Mitch nodded. "I thought so. But you're still pretty young," the words hung
in the air.

"Daniel is really nice. I'm okay," Nick answered.

"Enough said," Mitch sighed.

* * * *

Nick gave Daniel a worried look as the social worker rang the bell to the
house where Alex lived.

Mrs. Carson was quick to answer. "Nick! It's good to see you again. Though
I wish it wasn't because your mom is sick. How's she doing?"

"She hasn't woken up yet, but they took the breathing tube out earlier."

"That sounds like a good thing."

"I suppose." Nick was beginning to feel uncomfortable.

"Alex is upstairs," Mrs. Carson said, "He's been waiting for you."

"Judith, I want to thank you for agreeing to take Nick on such short
notice," The social worker said as they all stepped inside.

"My pleasure! You know I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't care about
kids."

Nick stood nervously as the women chatted.

"Nick, you can go on upstairs if you like." Mrs. Carson smiled.

Nick looked back at Daniel.

Daniel stepped close and gave him a hug. "Go ahead, you know how to find me
if you need me," he whispered.

Nick hugged him tight. "Thanks, Daniel."

* * * *

Hours later, Nick was in what had now become his new room. He was lying
curled up, clutching the blankets close. He had never before felt this
alone. He knew there were people just a few feet away, but here, in the
dark, he was all by himself. He tried, but couldn't stop the tears that
trickled down his cheek.

"Nick?" Alex asked softly, appearing in the doorway. The light from the
hall turned him into just a dark shadow.

"Yeah," Nick sniffed, wiping at his eyes.

"Do you want to sleep in my room tonight?"

Nick turned. "Why?"

"I know what it's like the first couple of nights." Alex walked over to
Nick's bed. "Come on, we can put your stuff on the floor."

Nick looked up.

Alex smiled. "We can pretend it's a camping trip."

Nick chuckled.

It only took the boys a few minutes to pull the blankets and pillows off
the bed and back into Alex's room.

As they settled in, Alex looked down at Nick. "Oh, I forgot to ask, do you
snore?"

Nick laughed. "No, I don't think so."

Alex grinned. "Well, that's good!"

Nick giggled, "But I fart once and a while."

Alex groaned, "Oh no, not another one!"

* * * *

It was a full three days later before Mrs. Hunter came out of her
coma. Nick was standing by her side.

"Hi, mom," he whispered as she held up her hand to him.

"Nicki, baby," she rasped.

Nick rubbed her hand as she seemed to take stock of her surroundings. "What
am I doing here?"

"Don't you remember?"

Mrs. Hunter rolled her head, "No."

"I guess you blacked out."

"I remember seeing the news. There was an accident at the Fort. I tried to
call Mitch, but they wouldn't let me through, wouldn't tell me a thing. I
was so frightened. I smoked a couple of cigarettes and made a small
drink. That's all I remember."

"You finished off a bottle!" Nick said firmly.

"I did?"

"I found you passed out. You've been here four days."

Tears came to Mrs. Hunter's eyes. She rolled her head, and sobbed. "I'm so,
so sorry!"

Nick leaned down and hugged her. After the tears ended, Nick wiped his
eyes. "Mitch has been here every day."

"He's okay?"

"Fine, he wasn't with the guys that got hurt. He's been really worried
about you."

His mom smiled.

Nick told her about how he'd persuaded the nurses to let Mitch come and
visit.

Mrs. Hunter reached up and pulled Nick close and kissed him on the
cheek. "Thank you, baby!"

Nick hugged his mom again as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

* * * *

Nick slept on the floor in Alex's room for a couple of nights and then
stayed in the spare bedroom. Several times during the week the dragon had
returned to the village and terrorized the good citizens.

Once, the dream had been so vivid Nick had woken with a scream. Alex was
the first to his room, followed moments later by Mrs. Carson. Aside from a
wet bed, Nick was all right. The dreams stopped about the time his mom woke
up.

On the fourth night that Nick had spent in the spare bedroom, he realized
it had been a very long time since he had had a passing thought about
sex. But now his dick was semi-hard and wanted some attention.

"It's been a while," Nick thought to himself as he slipped his hand into
his underpants and gave his cock a stroke. He closed his eyes and stroked a
couple of more times.

Nick rolled onto his stomach, pushed his boxers down past his ass, and
wrapped his hand around his dick. Bare ass up, he thrust his cock gently
against the sheets. He stroked a little more firmly as he went along. He
worked his dick with well practiced precision, his fingers pausing in the
right places and at the right times to heighten his pleasure. He grunted a
couple of times, but forced himself to stay quiet. As he neared orgasm he
knew he was about to make a big mess. At the last instant he pulled the
front of his boxers back up and aimed his cock off to the side. Four huge
squirts of boy juice shot against the fabric.

"Oh fuck. Fuck, yeah," Nick grunted as he pumped his underwear full of
cum. He stroked a few more times and then stopped. He wished he could make
that magical feeling last forever.

"Oh shit," he exhaled and rolled over onto his back. He stared at the
ceiling for a few moments before finally crawling out of bed in search of
clean underwear. He pulled off his used boxers, wiped the sperm from his
stomach and from around his dick, and then tossed them into the corner by
his shoes.

As he climbed back into bed, Nick took a deep breath. "God, I miss Daniel!"
he thought sadly. He closed his eyes, hunkered down, and prepared for
sleep.
