Noah: Chapter 4

By the time I got thru customs in Seoul Hwang was waiting for me. The day
had really just begun in Korea and I was exhausted!

Hwang asked if I had a hotel set up, I replied "No, but I wanna talk to Jai
and Lyn this morning, a hotel room can wait." Hwang just grunted his
approval and off we were to Uijongbu!

Hwang called ahead and talked to the Director letting him know to pull the
boys out of class and in the conference room in an hour.

We stopped at a "Starbucks" (Who woulda thought???) just outside of Seoul
and grabbed a coffee and I ate a cream cheese bagel on the way to the
orphanage. Hwang made another call that was short and sweet. "No need for a
hotel, the Wife says you're staying with us and Little Hwang is jumping for
joy..." I laughed and said, "Thanks Hwang, I'm kinda sick of hotel
rooms. Come to think of it, my last 7-8 years have been hotel rooms! Time
to settle down a bit." Hwang patted my shoulder and said, "I'm glad you're
looking at it that way, I think when I saw how you handled little Hwang and
talked to Kwan like he was an equal, I wondered why you weren't a
parent. You seem better at it than I am." I said, "I think I've been
running from it, seems Noah and you saw it long before me, go figure!" We
both laughed and it seemed the drive went quicker as we pulled up to the
gates in record time.

The Director was standing outside the doors of the main building and
greeted us as close friends. I asked where the conference room was and he
gave me quick direction. I left Hwang to explain as I bolted for the doors.

As I reached the door to the conference room, I paused as I grasped the
door knob. I took a deep breath and realized that my life was changing one
more time and I felt ready this time. Jai and Lyn had no idea who wanted to
speak to them and when I opened the door I heard a squeal and Lyn about
knocked me over as he leapt into my arms! "Wes!" He put his arms around my
neck and squeezed me tight. Jai smiled but kept his game face on like
normal. Lyn was trying to tell me that some people wanted to break him and
Jai apart and saying all of this thru tears. I rubbed his back and slowly
he calmed down and I was finally able to get him to sit on Jai's lap.

"That's why I'm here. I heard what was happening and I dropped everything
to come and fix it so you would never be apart." Jai looked doubtful so I
decided to lay it all out on the table. "If I have my way, you will never
be apart. You see, you both have been on my mind since we met. I'm not sure
when all these thoughts I had about being a loner and bachelor happened or
why, but that's kinda changed. Between you two and Noah, I've become
different. I feel different and part of that difference is that I want you
two to come to America with me, to be my Sons and let me take care of you
and love you guys more than I already do." Lyn never hesitated, he lept
from Jai's lap and bolted into my arms again, this time crying but
happy. Jai sat there stunned at my words. I looked at him seriously and
waited. Jai's eyes watered and he seemed angry. "What happens to us if you
don't like us or don't love us anymore?! What if you hate us? What then?
We've been thru this before with my Mother, she gave up on us, left us on
the street! We had no one but each other!!!!" I looked over and said, " I
don't know what might happen in our lives, but neither do you, I don't know
if you'll just run away or do equally stupid things, but I'm willing to try
and give us all a chance, more than I can say for most people and
definitely more than the family that wants to adopt Lyn and never even had
a thought for you! If that doesn't sound right, I don't know! I want you
both as my family, now, not tomorrow not next week, my only requirement is
that it's a package deal, both of you or neither." Jai had tears running
down his face and said, "Why? Why us?" I looked at Jai and then at Lyn and
said, "Because I think the moment I met you boys, I felt something that up
until last night I didn't recognize as love, I love you boys. I want to
care for you, watch you grow, try to catch you when you fall and watch you
turn into good men in the end. All of this because I love you both. I will
never not want you, never hate you, never abandon you and will always love
you both. It's up to you guys to decide. I will leave you to talk it over."
I put Lyn down and began to walk out when Jai stopped me. "I have one more
question..." I turned and nodded my head. He looked over at Lyn who nodded
at him. "If we live with you, how close are we to Disneyland?" I was
expecting a serious question and Jai had thrown me for a loop! I kinda
shook it off and looked up and Jai's eyes were smiling and he and Lyn began
laughing hysterically! I looked at both of them and just began
laughing. "You boys are cruel!" Jai stopped laughing and teared up again so
I closed the gap between us and pulled him into my arms and let him cry it
out. Lyn moved in between us and held on tightly to both of us.

As we came out of the conference room we caught Hwang and the Director
right outside the door. Their embarrassment was palpable. I just said,
"Let's get this ball rolling!" Hwang grabbed his phone and began making
calls as the Director moved to push us towards his office. He handed me a
bunch of paperwork that I noticed was partly filled out. I looked at the
Director and he just pointed at Hwang. Hwang just shrugged and kept
talking.

As I filled out mountains of paperwork Jai and Lyn were sitting there
holding hands but being very quiet. Hwang had been on his phone for an hour
plus and finally took a break. He spoke to the boys in Korean and quickly
they bolted out the door. "What'd you say to them?" He smiled and said, "I
told them that my wife was grilling burgers tonight and if they were gonna
eat with us, they'd better go pack their bags." I looked over at the
Director who was engrossed in his beloved paperwork, "Is he gonna let them
out of here tonight?" Hwang chuckled, "Wes, I've been planning this since
you got on that plane to Manila, I've covered every avenue, you forget that
I'm an expert at adoptions. I've had a Judge on call for three days, he's
meeting us at my house." I shook my head, "How'd you know Hwang that I'd do
this?" Hwang smiled and gave me an old line from American TV, "Ancient
Chinese Secret!" We laughed and then he continued, "I didn't know really,
but what I saw gave me much hope, and in the end, you proved me right, you
loved them boys enough to not want them to be separated and took the action
to make sure that didn't happen, if that's not a parent, then I don't know
what is."

The Director made me sign an overnight pass for the boys and Hwang
witnessed it and as soon as the boys came roaring in, we left for Hwang's
home. The boys and I didn't realize it, but this was their last day in the
orphanage as Hwang was as good as his word!

An hour later we pulled into Hwang's home and were greeted enthusiastically
by his wife and kids. Kwan and Little Hwang took the boys off and got them
settled in as we adults went and had a drink. Hwang poured me a stiff Crown
& Coke which I desperately needed. As I sat back and relaxed there was a
knock at the door, Hwang opened the door and a guy overloaded with camera
equipment was there. Hwang led him into the living room and pointed towards
a wall. He looked at me sheepishly, "Those boys need passports don't they?"
I had to laugh, "I gather you know the American Ambassador too?" Hwang
laughed, "We've played a few rounds of golf you might say...." Hwang
brought the boys in and the photographer was done in 15 minutes. Just as he
was leaving another knock and two people were at the door, one was the
Judge, the other was the Charge d' Affairs for the American Ambassador!
Things were kinda crazy at Hwang's! The Diplomat handed me a folder with
the State Department Seal embossed on the cover, "These are their temporary
visas, when you get all the documents from the adoption, get them social
security cards as soon as possible and their citizenship is 100%
assured. Good luck and the Ambassador told me to say Congratulations!" I
shook his hand and he left for home. The Judge wasn't as easy as Hwang
thought. He pulled me and the boys into Hwang's office and grilled me and
the boys. Jai settled his doubts pretty quickly by saying that he wanted no
other Father but me and Lyn just jumped into my arms. The judge made us
swear under penalty that all we said was true and we all swore even though
Lyn had his left hand up instead of his right. The Judge just laughed
loudly and placed his seal on the official adoption papers for both
boys. He shook my hand and after chatting with Hwang he left. I had to ask,
"How do you know the Judge? Golf too?" Hwang smiled, "No, he was my bunk
buddy in the orphanage when we were kids, he was there Til he was 18, he is
my best friend since we were 8 years old." I was kinda overwhelmed but Ami
called us in for Supper.

The boys were kinda tentative at first until Ami spoke, "No boys go hungry
in my house, you both eat now." They looked at her and realized she was
smiling and then the food vacuum known as "Boy" began kicking in. Us adults
ate 1 burger and fries. I'm still not sure how much all the boys ate but
Jai, Lyn and Little Hwang had bellies that were pooched out like they were
pregnant! Jai and Kwan cleared the table as Lyn and Little Hwang went to
play video games. I almost forgot and then picked up my phone and called
Helen.

"Hey you!" Helen always answered her phone that way. "Hey!" I then went
into great details about what had transpired in the last week. After I was
done Helen said, "Oh Wes! I'm so happy for you! I knew you were Father
material when I met you!" I laughed, "This is the third time I've heard
this Father Material thing." She laughed and said, "When you read to my
boy, who'd you only knew for a few hours, I knew it. Plus, Noah doesn't
attach himself to anyone, and he took to you from the get go, so yeah, I
recognized your potential pretty quickly." I told her that I and the boys
would be in Palo Alto in a day and a half. She just said, "I guess I'd
better increase the amount of Pot Roast huh?" I laughed, "These guys have
hollow legs so yes, I would!" I told her that Noah needed to FaceTime me if
he could. She said she hand him the phone once we were done. We closed the
conversation after she congratulated me and I thanked her.

Noah called via FaceTime 5 minutes later. "Hi ya Uncle Wes! What's up?"
"I've got Jai and Lyn with me, the Judge signed off on the adoption a
couple of hours ago!" Noah was jumping up and down! "Alright! I'm so happy
for all of you! You're gonna be a great Dad, Uncle Wes! I just know it! " I
laughed, "And what if I turn out to be a terrible parent and this becomes
the worst idea ever?" Noah looked at me like I'd said the stupidest thing
ever, "I'm not attracted to losers, I know you're not a loser or a bad
person! Other then my Mom, I can't think of a better person than you! So
don't ever do that, you are gonna be good to those boys, better than most
real Fathers that I know!" I looked into his eyes and saw he was speaking
his truth. "How come everyone sees this thing but me?" Noah smiled his
sweet smile, "Cuz you are always trying to be better or you think you could
be better, which is something that I like about you, you are always trying
to make us happy and you are sweet to me..." I kinda blushed at that and he
giggled. "See! You are embarrassed by compliments! That is sweet!" Noah was
laying it on just to see me blush! I looked at him seriously and said, "You
will get yours Noah! I will be seeing you in 2 days and you'd better be
prepared for paybacks!" Noah laughed loudly and said, "I'm sure your idea
of paybacks has something to do with Unicorns and rainbows!" I had to laugh
but said, "Just you wait boy, just you wait..." I closed it out by saying
"I love you Noah..." Noah smiled brightly and said, "Love you more!"

Hwang had the boys settled down for bedtime by the time I got off the
phone. Kwan and Jai in one room, and Little Hwang and Lyn in his
room. Hwang, Ima and I sat in the living room sipping a mixed drink and
just chatting about the boys and how they were really getting along. I
suggested that Hwang and family should come to California this summer for a
visit. "I've got plenty of room and I think Little Hwang would love
Disneyland." Ima smiled and stole a glance at Hwang, he nodded and said,
"It's a possibility..." I looked at him and said, "Let me handle the
details, just pick out two weeks in late June or early July. I'll fly you
all out and fly you back when your ready." Hwang instinctively thought of
the cost and I knew he was thinking about money. "Hwang! I have more money
than I know what to do with, and plus, as your friend, I insist that you
and Ima and the kids come to my house so that I can repay your
hospitality." Ima gave him her "look" that said, "We are going!" Hwang
smiled at his wife and said, "How can I refuse your generous offer!" I
slapped my knee and said, "Fantastic! Lyn will be happy to have Little
Hwang with him at Disney!" Ima smiled and said, "You Wes are a very good
man, even in this, you are making sure someone else is going to be happy,
if I didn't love Hwang so much, I'd marry you!" Hwang pretended to be
perturbed and I just laughed. We all were tired and said our goodnights and
Hwang and I checked on the boys. Kwan and Jai were still awake listening to
music and chatting but I told Jai we were flying out at 10 in the morning
so they needed to get some sleep. They both agreed and Jai came over and
hugged me, "Goodnight Wes." I hugged him back tightly and said, "Goodnight
Jai, sweet dreams buddy!"

We opened Little Hwang's bedroom door and he and Lyn were fast
asleep. Hwang was facing Lyn and had his arm over Lyn's side. Both boys
were kinda snoring lightly. Hwang and I smiled and Hwang said, "Ima didn't
need to give me that look had I seen this first..." We backed out and
closed the door quietly. I headed to the guest room and after a quick
shower I think I was out as soon as I hit the pillow.

It felt like I'd just fallen asleep when two young ragamuffins jumped on my
bed! I groaned and pulled the covers over my head. I heard the boys giggle
and I peeked at the clock, it was 5:30 in the morning! I pulled off the
covers and said, "Boys, get under these covers now! It's too early for you
to be up, we were up late last night! I need 2 more hours of sleep!" I gave
them my scowl and they jumped to get under the covers. Lyn pushed in close
to me with Hwang right up against him. I pulled the covers over us and
said, "Now, go back to sleep, no playing, no noise!" They both got quiet
and for a brief second it was quiet, then Little Hwang said, "Jeez Lyn,
your Dad is grumpy!" Lyn giggled and said, "I may have to change my mind on
this adoption thing now that I know he's grumpy!" Both boys started
giggling and I really couldn't help it and started giggling too, which set
off a laughing jag and then some tickling until they both gave up. They
finally calmed down and we all fell back asleep.

I was woken by Ima. "Wes, it's time to get up, I've got breakfast ready!" I
groaned and turned onto my other side. I heard Ima sigh and she said,
"Well, I tried..." Next thing I knew two crumb snatchers were attacking me!
One pulled at my cover as the other hit me with a pillow! "Hey now! Ouch!
Ok, ok! I'm up!" Both boys had pillows by then and were laughing
loudly. Ima just said, "Good job boys, now let's leave him to get dressed,
you've got 15 minutes Wes, I don't like serving cold food!" I grumbled an
ok and she said, "Don't make me send these boys back in here!" I waited til
the door closed then vaulted to the bathroom to get rid of my morning wood
as my bladder was full. After relieving myself, I took a quick shower and
brushed my teeth. I put on some jeans and a blue polo and headed towards
the noise in the kitchen. Ima pointed to a chair next to Hwang and I sat
down. Ima brought me a cup of coffee and I set about mixing in some
sugar. I sipped the coffee, "Bless you Ima, I always need coffee!" She
smiled and brought over a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon and then
brought over 2 pieces of toast. I looked at the boys, they were eating like
we'd starved them yesterday! Hwang was like me, he liked to wake up slowly
while nursing his first coffee. I enjoyed the breakfast but the coffee was
my favorite! When I put my plate in the sink I hugged Ima and said, "You
sure you don't wanna dump Hwang and come to California?" Ima smiled but
shook her head no, "I love us Wes, but you're way too grumpy in the
morning!" Hwang and the boys had a big laugh at my expense. I just hung my
head and pretended to be sad... Lyn hopped up and hugged me around the
waist, "I still love you grumpy old man!" Lite Hwang high fived Lyn and
they both giggled. Kwan and Jai were laughing too! "Man! I get no respect!
"

Pretty soon Hwang and Kwan had our bags in the family minivan and we were
ready to leave. Ima talked to the boys before telling me goodbye. When I
asked what she'd talked to the boys about, she said, "I told them to cut
you some slack as you are just as new to this as they are. They promised me
they'd really try hard cuz they both like you, Lyn loves you but Jai is a
bit jaded by life, so you need to apply some TLC to that boy ok?" I
promised I would do my best and she hugged me and said, "See you this
summer Wes! We love you and the boys!" Her kids said their goodbyes with
Little Hwang and Lyn having a hard time of it. I whispered in Lyn's ear and
he smiled and hopped in the van. As we headed out onto the road, Hwang's
family were all waving enthusiastically. I'm grinning because I have some
great new friends! Later as we readied to board the plane I looked at my
two boys and they both looked excited! I hugged them to me and thought, "In
for a penny, in for a pound!"

Next stop: Palo Alto! I'm excited!
