Noah: Chapter 5

The flight from Seoul to San Francisco was long! We had a layover in
Anchorage, Alaska and that lasted 4 hours. So while we waited the boys and
I ate at the McDonalds in the main terminal. Jai and Lyn are bilingual and
as McDonalds is pretty much everywhere they were able to figure out the
menu pretty quick. As they both ordered Big Mac combo meals I knew they
were hungry! What boy isn't?

As we sat and ate our food I realized we had no transportation from San
Fran to Palo Alto! I quickly grabbed my iPad and logged in. I ordered a
sport utility at Hertz that we could pick up at the airport and after
looking at the boys I realized they'd need clothes, so I figured we'd crash
tonight and hit the mall tomorrow. I was busy thinking things out and
realized that Jai and Lyn were just staring at me. "Ah, sorry guys, I've
got a lot on my mind, and our first few days at home will be busy!" Jai
smiled and said, "Don't worry Wes, it will all work out, me and Lyn don't
need much." I chuckled, "Yeah, based on your appetite I've got lots to
worry about!" Jai looked at me sheepishly and said, "I'll slow down on the
eating, honest!" I patted his shoulder and said, "Jai, you have no control
over that, all boys eat and their bodies require it, you just keep doing
what you're doing, my ability to feed you will never be an issue." Jai
smiled an almost too sweet smile and said, "So you won't mind if Lyn and I
go get an ice cream sundae?" I looked at them both and laughed out loud,
"You boys are walking vacuum cleaners!" I handed them some cash and as they
walked towards the counter I said, "Bring me an apple pie too!" Jai looked
at me and said, "vacuum huh?"... I laughed and said, "Hey, I'm still
growing!"

We finally lifted off from Anchorage and were on our way home! The pilot
was pointing out stuff on both side of the plane, so I took the aisle seat
so Jai and Lyn could see the sights. When we flew thru Wahington State,
they saw Mt. Rainer and in Oregon they saw Mt Hood. We made up some time as
we had a tailwind and as we flew into San Francisco, the boys saw the
Golden Gate Bridge, they were pretty impressed with that and I promised
that we'd drive over it soon! The Fasten Seatbelt sign came on and we were
going in for a landing. Lyn looked scared and grabbed my hand and then
grabbed Jai's. I looked over at Jai and I think he looked worse than Lyn!
We touched down with barely a bump and were soon taxing towards a skywalk.

We went thru customs pretty quickly as the State Department folder proved
invaluable. The TSA guys were courteous (which was a surprise to me!) and
we made it to baggage claim just as the luggage carousel began spewing out
baggage. We grabbed a cart and piled our luggage on it and I headed towards
the rental car kiosks. Jai and Lyn were walking behind me and both were
gawking at the mass of people coming and going in the terminal. We got
lucky and after providing my license and credit card, they held the shuttle
for us so we made it out to the car lot fairly quickly. I'd rented a Toyota
Sequoia as I thought we'd need the room. I have a car at home but I knew it
was too small for me and two boys, I'd remedy that in the next few
days. The time of day told me that Hwy 101 wouldn't be too bad so I hit El
Camino Real and headed south.

The trip took an hour, which by California time was amazingly fast! I lived
close to Ravenswood Preserve and if I did anything smart with my money, it
was buying the home which was situated on 10 wooded acres. It was
originally built for one of those late 80's dot com entrepreneurs but as
with most of those, he'd lost his shirt on his IPO and the house went to
foreclosure. I paid 6 million which was actually a steal in this area. It
was a large house, 6 bedrooms 5 baths with a great room, formal dining
room, an indoor pool and hot tub, plus a huge kitchen which also had a
family dining area. All in all, it was 4800 square feet of livable space
and I owned it outright. No mortgage, no liens. My taxes were high, but I
didn't really care as this was my respite from the world.

As we pulled up to the gate, I had to punch in a code as I didn't have my
remote. As we pulled up the drive Lyn was saying "Wow!" I knew he was in
for a treat after we went around the corner. The house came into view and
both boys were saying, "Whoa!" I smiled and said, "Welcome home boys,
welcome home." I pulled into the circular drive so we could bring the bags
in. We stood outside the large double doors and I could see their
anticipation. "Boys, this is your home, as much as its mine. You will have
your own key and you will have your own rooms. We will all respect each
other's privacy and knock before entering each other's rooms. I want you to
be happy here and know that this will always be your home. Lyn hugged my
waist and Jai smiled brightly. I unlocked the door and held the door as
they stepped inside. I'd accessed the house computer while we were in
Anchorage and had set the thermostat and the house was comfortable and the
air was clean smelling. I had a service that came and cleaned the place up
as my time was limited to say the least. Both boys were kinda in awe as
they looked and touched things that caught their eye. I gave a quick tour
downstairs, the pool and hot tub were an instant hit, (Funny, I'd of
thought the kitchen would've been...). They both loved to swim and couldn't
wait to try it out! I noted that neither one had swimwear, another note
added to my list! I took them upstairs and showed them my master bedroom
and said, my room is always open to you both! Then I walked them thru the
other bedrooms and after that, I told them to choose what room they
wanted. Lyn chose the one closest to mine, it was large and had a great
view of the backyard and the woods behind that. Jai chose the room that had
a small entertainment area in it. Both had bathrooms and large walk in
closets. I sent them to get their bags and get situated. I grabbed my bags
and started the process of putting clean clothes away and getting my dirty
clothes ready for washing. I yelled for the boys to bring me their dirty
clothes and Lyn came running in with a small handful of assorted clothes
and underwear. Jai handed me his dirty clothes but I could see he was a bit
embarrassed about handing me his underwear. I punched his shoulder lightly,
"Relax Jai, I'm not too proud of my underwear somedays either, no worries!"
Jai raised his eyebrows at my comment and when I winked, he just laughed,
"Thanks Wes!" He went back to his room and I went into the laundry room
which was right across from Lyn's room and right next to the main
bathroom. I separated whites from colors and realized why Jai was so
embarrassed, his underwear had cum stains in them. I figured Jai and I
would need to talk soon. I started the wash and went downstairs to check
the kitchen and see what was needed. I had a huge fridge and freezer which
as I opened them realized that I barely had lived here... A 6 pack of beer,
a few gatorades and sodas. Case of bottled water and a lot of condiments!
My freezer was lacking too, half eaten cartons of Hagen Daz and some packs
of hot dogs and 1 pack of kielbasa sausage. I am running things thru my
mind and I yell at the boys, "boys, we need to run to the store!" The boys
came running down and we headed into town. I always go to the same Safeway
and today would be no different! I grabbed a cart and told Jai to grab one
too. Lyn stayed close to me as this was all foreign to him. (No pun
intended!). I started in the meat section, picking out two roasts, a few
pork loins, hamburger and a couple slabs of ribs. I then got cold cuts,
bread, milk and juice. I grabbed my favorite spices and then went to the
vegetable section. Lots of salad fixings and corn, squash, potatoes,
vidalia onions and bell peppers. We worked our way thru the store
systematically and finally I called a halt and we went to check out. $423
dollars later we were packing things in the back of the Sequoia. I realized
it was getting dark so dinner would be at one of my favorite places. I
drove a couple of miles and we parked in front of A&W. This was one of the
original stores, I'd been coming here since I was a kid in San Jose. I led
the boys in and the smell of chili dogs and root beer filled our noses. I
did the ordering while the boys looked around at the decor. The reason I
love this place is that it has this cool fireplace right in the middle of
the dining area, it was round and there was a bar all the way around it! I
grabbed our tray and sat the boys at the bar. They were mesmerized by the
fireplace and actually ate slower than normal. Well, almost... The chili
dogs and curly fries hit the spot and both boys really loved the root beer
and Lyn started laughing when Jai took a drink and ended up with foam on
his upper lip and nose. Jai realized what was wrong but hammed it up for
our benefit and we all eventually had a root beer mustache. We all decided
to get an ice cream and after an enjoyable meal we reluctantly headed home.

Jai and I took care of the groceries and Lyn basically put stuff in the
crispers as I pulled them out of the bag. In short time we'd stocked the
fridge and I figured one more trip and our freezer would be fine. I got
myself and the boys a water and took them to my favorite room, the Great
room. It was where my flat screen sat on the wall above my fireplace. 70
inches of high definition with a surround sound system that I did myself. I
had a smart TV so I had all the pay channels like Netflix and Hulu. The
boys chose an action movie, "Taken 2" and I popped some popcorn and we
settled in for the night. Lyn fell asleep laying against me and Jai was
dozing off as well. I watched the movie thru and as the credits rolled I
woke Jai as I picked Lyn up and we all headed upstairs. I put Lyn down on
his bed and as he was in shorts, I just took his shoes off and covered him
up and dimmed the lights, but light enough he wouldn't wake up to pitch
black. Jai waited until I walked out of Lyn's room and thanked me for
dinner and said good night, I hugged him and said, "see you in the morning
buddy!" He went down the hall to his room and I made for bed, I was
exhausted! I pulled off my clothes except for my boxer briefs and pulled
back my covers and gratefully lay my head onto the soft pillow. My lights
went out in a millisecond!

Sometime during the night Lyn woke me, he got scared being alone and came
in my room and stood next to my bed and whispered my name. I woke up
quickly but was a bit disoriented for a second. I finally focused and Lyn
was about to cry. "Hey buddy, what's the matter?" He sniffled and said, "I
kinda got scared, I woke up and you and Jai were not there!" I just pulled
the covers back and said, "Get in champ! We need our sleep!" Lyn scampered
up and cuddled up to me and I pulled the covers up over us and soon Lyn was
fast asleep, his cute little snore was clearly in affect and I slowly
drifted back to sleep.

Morning came abruptly as I woke with Lyn jumping on my body! "Morning Dad!"
I grumbled a bit and he pulled the covers back to look at my face. I had
shut my eyes tightly but I felt his stare on me. I cracked open an eye and
he beamed a huge smile. I don't think anyone could sleep thru such a smile
as he wore. I croaked out a good morning and he started chattering. "Im
hungry! Can we have breakfast like Hwang's Mom made? Can I wake up Jai?
This went on and on Til I sat up quickly and grabbed him and flipped him
over and began tickling him and saying, "Stop talking Lyn! You're a
chatterbox!" Lyn giggled uncontrollably as I tortured him with tickles all
over. I finally had to stop as I realized I really had to pee! I jumped up
and trotted to the bathroom and quickly released the pressure in my
kidneys. Lyn was propped up, his chin held up by his hands when I came
out. He was smiling but a question came out that I wasn't expecting this
soon. "Hwang called you my Dad, are you really my Dad?" I sat next to him
and rubbed his back as I thought about what I was gonna say. "Lyn, I
adopted you and Jai because I love you both and wanted you to be together
with me, I may not be your real Father but I want so much to be your Dad."
Lyn thought for a moment then said, "Does that mean I can call you Dad? I
don't like calling you Wes." I smiled at my sweet boy and said, "I'd be
happy for you to call me Dad, if I can call you Son." Lyn smiled broadly
and said, "I think I can live with that!" I grabbed his sides and rained
down tickles while saying, "You think you can live with that! Why you
little!!!" Lyn was squealing with glee and finally said, "Ok, ok! I want to
call you Dad!" I kissed his nose and said, "Thank you! Now let's go get
breakfast started! Lyn bolted out the door as I pulled on my gym shorts. I
heard him knocking on Jai's door and yelling, "Jai! Wake up! Dad's making
breakfast!" I felt my heart give a tug hearing Lyn and I knew that things
would work out...

I love breakfast, especially breakfast at home. There's something about
breakfast that makes the day so much better. I decided on homemade waffles
and bacon. I loved making waffles from scratch and they were easy and
filling. I'd just mixed my batter when Lyn came scurrying in and Jai was
dragging behind him. I just nodded at Jai as he sat at the family table. I
fixed a glass of juice for him and Lyn and he gratefully took it. I love my
old waffle iron, it was my Mom's and when I moved here, she shipped it to
me. She passed away 3 years ago and the waffle iron reminded me of her. I
started the first batch and turned the oven on to keep them warm as they
came out. I turned on the griddle burners on my 6 burner gas stove and
waited til I'd put three waffles in the oven before I began cooking
bacon. Soon the smell of bacon had both boys ready to eat, they were
practically salivating as I flipped the bacon. I pointed out where the
plates and utensils were and asked Jai to set out three places. He hopped
up and had them in place in no time. He even poured me some juice and
placed me at the head of the table. I was just finishing the 6th waffle and
poured myself a coffee, Kona blend is my favorite! I placed the waffles in
front of them and also some bacon. They both watched as I poured maple
syrup on my waffles and both boys did the same not knowing what to
expect. I cut a small square out of my waffle and took a bite. Both boys
did the same, well, Lyn tried but managed to get a piece on his fork. As if
they'd dared each other, they both took a bite at the same time. I thought
I heard Angels playing trumpets as the boys faces changed into
grins. "Nirvana"... I never heard a peep out of the boys throughout
breakfast, just scrapings of forks on plates and occasional gulps of
juice. When the dust cleared all the waffles and bacon were gone, I had to
split the 6th one between the two boys and from their looks, it'd better be
exactly in half! Both boys were sated for now and both were smiling. Jai
simply said, "Thank you." Where as Lyn had to expand breakfast into this
life altering thing! Jai and I were both laughing at Lyn's attempts to put
into words what he felt about waffles. I finally had to get up and load the
dishwasher, Jai asked if he could help and pretty soon we had a clean
kitchen. As we were finishing up, Lyn says, "Hey Jai, Dad says we can call
him Dad!" Jai's face changed a bit but looked at me. I said, "It's not
required Jai, Lyn asked about it this morning and I told him it was ok if
he wanted to, I made no mention of you as I think you can make your own
decisions and I don't care if you call me Wes or whatever. I don't need the
title." Jai shook his head to affirm that he'd heard me out. "If it's ok,
I'll call you Wes." I said, "That's fine Jai." I looked to see that the
kitchen was clean. "Ok, we have clothes to shop for and Noah and his Mom
are coming over later. Let's grab showers and clean clothes and head out!

I went into Lyn's room and laid out his clothes and sent him in to brush
his teeth and I set his shower. I then went into my room and did the 3 S's
(sh*t, shower & shave). When I came out into my bedroom I realized that I
heard no noises. I quickly got dressed and headed to Lyn's room. The shower
was still running! "Lyn? You're still taking a shower?" He slid the glass
door back a bit and said, "The water is sooooooo warm! I've never had this
much warm water!" I chuckled and said, "You've got five minutes to be
dressed and downstairs!" The water shut off immediately and he slid the
shower door back and I handed him a towel. I walked out and knocked on
Jai's door. No answer. As I was about to knock again I heard a voice behind
me, "You looking for me Wes?" Jai was fully dressed and looked very
presentable. "Just making sure you were ready, unlike your Brother who just
now got out of the shower..." Jai laughed, "Lyn's never had hot showers, he
feels like a prince in a castle!" I laughed and said, "Well, tell Prince
Lyn that he'd better hurry or the Kings carriage will be leaving without
him!" Jai laughed and headed to Lyn's room.

I went back to my room, put on my loafers and grabbed my keys and
wallet. When I got to the bottom of the steps Jai and Lyn were waiting at
the front door. Lyn's hair was still a bit damp but he'd survive. We locked
up and jumped in the Sequoia and headed into town. I decided on the Mall
because it was just easier to get all we could in one great swoop! Again
with the mouths open! Both boys were amazed at the mall. It was large, but
I knew of some that were humongous . We started out at Macy's, it's always
been a favorite of mine, it was reasonably priced and carried quality
clothes. We got started by getting some shorts and t-shirts for Lyn. He was
pretty easy and loved the screen print shirts. I made him get a few that
would go well with jeans and a sport coat. We then switched and got Jai
some shorts and shirts. He preferred the skaters shorts, no cargo, straight
front, almost to the knee. His t-shirts were a bit more subdued than Lyn's,
polo, red camel and volcom. We made sure they got a few pair of swim trunks
and then focused on Jeans and khakis. I like Levi's and have never
strayed. Both boys liked the 501's and they got 4 pair each and 3 pair of
khakis each. We bought underwear, I let them choose, Jai wanted boxer
briefs in red, green and blues. Lyn got Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle briefs
and Guardians of the Galaxy briefs. Obviously, Lyn is a loud kid! We
strolled the mall and the boys followed their noses to the food court. They
chose different foods, so I gave Jai a twenty and me and Lyn went to
Sappora's and had pizza. Jai came back with KFC, his chicken looked good,
both Lyn and I were eyeing his chicken so much Jai covered his plate with
his hand. Finally it was off to get shoes. We went to Foot Locker and I
told them 2 pair, one you like and one pair I like cuz I figured Lyn would
buy some of those fluorescent green ones and I was right, I chose a black
pair of 3/4 Reeboks that had a Velcro strap on top. Jai was more
conservative and chose a black and grey pair of Nikes, I picked out a pair
of Converse Chuck Taylor Classics for him. Lyn wasn't impressed with my
choice but Jai said the Converse were his second choice. We left there and
went to Nordstroms, I chose a pair of deck shoes for them and a pair of
dress shoes. We lugged all this stuff to the Sequoia and then I took them
back to Nordstroms to be fitted for a blue sportscoat and a suit. Jai chose
a nice charcoal grey suit with very subtle pinstripes. Lyn wanted red, I
told him no, I chose a dove grey suit for him. Once they put it on him, he
got over the color and said he thought it was cool! The suits and
sportscoat had to be altered, so we would be back on Thursday to pick them
up.

We were almost home when a got a text from Helen, she and Noah were leaving
home now. I texted my address and also my gate code. They'd be here in an
hour or so. I placed Jai in charge of removing tags and washing new
clothes. I left him and Lyn in the living room and I went to check my
emails.

My office is on the ground floor and I love this room, all dark woods and
leather. Overstuffed chairs and brass lamps. I sat at my laptop and opened
my email. Dr. Graham sent me a note telling me that GE donated an MRI to
our hospital after the CEO read an article in the Journal. I found the
CEO's Twitter account and sent him a message thanking him. I saw an email
from the Director of the Orphanage telling me that Hwang wanted to build a
gymnasium! I thought it a sound idea and sent an email to Hwang telling him
I'd match him dollar for dollar on the gym deal. Told him to say hello to
my family in Seoul. I checked my local account and all seemed good. I
logged out and went back out to the living room. Jai had started the wash
and he and Lyn were watching TV. I went into the kitchen and made a pitcher
of tea and set it in the fridge, then walked over to the pool area and
checked the chemicals in the pool. Mine was salt filtered so chemicals were
rarely used. I heard a chime which meant the front gate was being accessed
so I went back to the living room and asked the boys to help me greet our
guests.

Helen pulled up into the circular drive and as soon as she stopped Noah was
out of the car. "Uncle Wes!!!" He lunged into my arms and hugged me
tightly. "I missed you soooooo much!" I kissed his cheek and said, "I
missed you too Noah, very much!" I set him down and Helen gave me my "Hey
you!" And a nice hug. I stepped aside and my two boys looked
nervous. "These two are my pride and joy, the taller one is Jai and the one
bouncing is Lyn." Helen hugged them both and said, "My! You are some
handsome looking boys! I hope we can be friends!" Jai blushed a bit but
smiled a bit brighter at her compliment. Lyn hugged her back and said, "Can
I call you Aunt Helen? I've never had an Aunt, you sure are pretty!" Helen
laughed and said, "Obviously, you are a charmer, and yes, you can call me
Aunt Helen, I think I'd like that, gives me more boys to spoil!" We all
laughed and then Noah stepped up to Lyn and said, "Hi! I'm Noah!" Lyn kinda
laughed and said, "Ahhh yeah, remember we facetimed?" Noah looked at his
feet for a minute and then laughed out loud, "Oh wow! I'm such a DoDo! "
Lyn laughed and said "Hey, wanna see my room? Hey did you know we're kinda
cousins? Did you bring your video games? ." All this while they walked
inside. Helen and I looked at each other and laughed. Helen said, "He's a
ball of energy isn't he?" Jai laughed and said, "I think you have barely
seen the real Lyn..." We all laughed and Helen asked Jai to help her get
some food out of the trunk. I offered to take in her luggage and she kindly
accepted. We got her and Noah's stuff put in their rooms and in a short
time I could smell her pot roast wafting from the kitchen. Jai was coming
down the stairs and stopped and sniffed, "What is that smell? It is making
me hungry!" I thought to myself, "I hope she really made enough..."

An hour later we called the boys down. I made them wash up at the sink and
we ate in the family dining area. Helen and I served the boys a salad
first, then we dished out the pot roast and mashed potatoes. The boys had
cleaned their plates before Helen and I sat down! They slowed down on their
seconds and we chatted animatedly. Helen was all agog about my house and I
told her I'd give her the grand tour after supper. Noah and Lyn were
talking about a video game and Jai joined in and gave Noah some pointers
about the next level. I think the boys got their second wind and ate a
third plate, albeit a small plate. There wasn't enough left to put away as
leftovers!

The boys were charged with loading the dishwasher and Helen and I took the
tour. She really loved the pool area and thought the bedrooms were huge! We
talked as we walked out back. She started, "So... How's Fatherhood going?"
I smiled and said, "For the most part, it's been great! They're both good
boys and I'm grateful that they allowed me to adopt them. Lyn is just a
joy, Jai, well he's more complicated, he's been in that system for some
time and it affected him in ways that I'm not sure about. He's not ready to
commit to anything, it's like he's here for the ride and for Lyn, but I k
ow he's a good boy and I want us to be a family, he's gonna take some
time." Helen smiled and said, "He needs TLC is all, focus on him." I agreed
and said, "I swear you must know Ami, she said the same thing 3 days ago!"
Helen laughed and said, "She must be a smart lady! I'd like to meet her
sometimes!" I said, "You'll get your chance, she, Hwang and their kids are
coming this summer for vacation, Hey! Wanna go to Disneyland this summer?"
Helen laughed, "I don't know what my schedule will be but I'll send Noah
anyways!" I pretended to swoon and she giggled, "Go on! You treat Noah like
he's your own, and although he calls you Uncle, I think he'd prefer to call
you Dad, and even I can see why." I blushed a bit and she said, "You are
some kind of Father Knows Best clone or something!" I laughed and said,
"Well, I'm not that! Maybe Mike Brady!" We both laughed and after walking a
bit, we headed inside and we could hear the boys all in the living room
playing a video game. I went into the kitchen and set out bowls while Helen
went in to ask the boys if they wanted ice cream. I swear I heard two
controllers hit the floor. In seconds they were at the kitchen island
looking to see what kind of ice cream I had. Lyn and Noah chose Chocolate,
Helen had Mint Chocolate chip and Jai and I had Cappuccino. We all sat at
the island and Noah started telling corny jokes which were funny and even
Jai laughed which really opened up his face and I caught a glimpse of what
he could be. We washed up and I made the boys shower and get into PJ's
while Helen and I sipped coffee and she told me she was flying to Seattle
tomorrow at 9, and that she would say her goodbyes to the boys tonight as
she was leaving at 6am. I knew she was excited about seeing her friend and
to just get away. I told her that Noah would be fine as I had a lot planned
for the boys and he'd be a help to me with Lyn, so I could focus on
Jai. The boys came down all clean and Helen kissed them all and told them
that she was leaving early to go to Seattle. She had them promise that
they'd look out for each other and especially Wes. I looked hurt, I felt it
was an Academy Award performance. The boys all laughed and Noah said,
"Don't worry Mom, we'll keep him in line!" Helen smiled and said, "Good!
You know he's an accident waiting to happen!" They all laughed at my
expense and then I shoo'd them off to bed. Lyn whispered in my ear and I
quietly agreed. Jai gave me a quick hug and said good night, he gave Helen
a tighter hug and thanked her for the pot roast. Noah hugged us both and
kissed his Mom. They said their goodbyes and Noah and Lyn walked upstairs,
Noah's arm was resting on Lyn's shoulder. Helen was curious about Lyn's
secret. "He wanted for Noah to sleep in his room, Lyn's a bit skittish at
night. He didn't want you to know, he thinks you'd think he was a baby.
Helen smiled, "He's such a sweetie!" I agreed and began to turn lights off
and locking up. I hugged "Aunt Helen" and I headed to my room. I was tired
and after brushing my teeth I lay down gratefully....

I woke to two boys in briefs attacking me with pillows.
